ETA: Okay, seems with the comments and ALL the long videos, I’ve made this post load very slowly for some of you. Apologies, but thanks for all the feedback. I’m going to move most of the videos below the fold.
Test one – Rachel Maddow MSNBC
CBS removed because it autoplays after reloading.
Test two – Steve Hartman from CBSNews
Test Three – Dr. Ruth from Ellen Tube
How did these work for everyone? We are just testing out using embed codes to access videos. It was hit or miss previously but seems FYWP has upped their game just in time for the new site to launch.
But if you can’t see them, mention in the comments what system you’re on and what you are or are not seeing.
Otherwise, evening open thread….
ETA:
Test 4 PBS.org
Test 5 – Found CNN embeds – not all videos have them.
The Color of California from Sean Slobodan on Vimeo.
Test 6 – Vimeo
TaMara (HFG)
Unless I’m missing something from CNN, they don’t have embed codes. Which is a bummer.
sdhays
I can see the first one, not the second one, and the third one keeps blinking.
Google Chrome on a Mac.
Raven
Slow loading but ok on a macbook pro-chrome.
sdhays
Seems to work on Safari.
Mike S (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!)
#1 Rachel – wouldn’t play until I turned off my adblocker for this page. The other two played fine when clicked on. Chrome, Win 10 on an HP Laptop.
+ Piano kitties!
TaMara (HFG)
I just added a PBS.org
TaMara (HFG)
@Mike S (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!): Yeah, MSNBC has that down to a science.
e julius drivingstorm
Macbook Air on Safari. Test 3 worked fine. Test 2 did not work at all and partially overlapped Test 1.Test 1 did not work when I first clicked on it but did work after I tried Test 3.
laura
All three videos were clearly embedded and the the 3rd – PBS did an auto playon this android phone.
Mike S (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!)
@TaMara (HFG): The PBS one works for me too. but with a refresh the #2 CBS Nurse is now is autoplaying. Chrome-Win 10 on an HP laptop.
laura
@laura: needs MOAR buggles.
Another Scott
Am I remembering correctly that Vimeo is weird here sometimes?
The 4 above seem to work fine here – Chrome on MBP.
Cheers,
Scott.
Chris T.
I have a lot of crap blocked by default, which is probably why, but I got nuthin’ … zero for
threeedit: 4.(Firefox, Mac, adblock, noscript, and more!)
Ken
Months of preparation and testing of the new site gets everyone all excited about the possibilities. Then at the last minute the old platform jumps in with a new feature, and the powers that be seem curiously enamored with it. What is this, an extended metaphor for the Democratic primary?
BTW all the videos show up; Firefox, laptop, private window.
John Revolta
Okay, these are running perfectly. Load fast, look great and sound great.
I’m on an old iMac running Safari 11.1 and don’t nobody laugh because it knows where you live.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Maddow played fine. I can’t see the Hartman one. It’s a white space without even a box. The Dr Ruth one is black with no way to play. PBS plays.
Windows on a desktop, Edge. (Don’t be making fun.) I have both Chrome and Firefox sitting there if I want to use them.
TaMara (HFG)
I just added a CNN one.
And FU CBS for the stupid autoplay.
Martin
@Ken: I suspect this is a test in anticipation of Impeachment streaming starting before the new site is ready, rather than a new feature.
FlyingToaster
I had to go enable CBS, NBC, EllenTube and PBS. Works fine.
ETA: Not CNN. I’ll hack away at it, but it will likely fail.
[Mac Firefox NoScript Ghostery CookieMaster Disconnect4Facebook]
TaMara (HFG)
@Ken: Hey, they weren’t working on the new site either, which is why I’m excited and playing around now (we no longer have access to the test site).
EmanG
Long time lurker but def stoked about the new design. I’m on an HP Chromebook running Chrome (cause I can’t figure out how to get Firefox on it yet) but all 3 vids played quickly right out of the box.
Ilieitz
God speed Jimmy Carter
FelonyGovt
They all worked fine on my iPhone XR.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Now they’re all playing.
FlyingToaster
@FlyingToaster: Oddly enough, CNN is working better than MSNBC. But it’s firing up the fan, which is a bad sign. I think I’ll disable CNN forthwith.
TaMara (HFG)
Okay I REMOVED the stupid autoplaying CBS video and added a Vimeo.
Let me know if any others are autoplaying fo you.

1) good
2) blinking, never loads

@TaMara (HFG): No autoplaying, the Vimeo works fine, they all play for me. BMP with Chrome (and UBlock Origin).
Thanks.
Cheers,

I didn’t watch any of them straight through, but they all loaded quickly and cleanly. Safari, iPhone 8+.

Took forever, but all is good. Might be a signal problem here though, as bad weather is heading in as we speak. Been having trouble with load speeds for a few hours.

Number 4, 5, 6 working well. No autoplays.

All look fine here. iPad, running Safari on iOS 13.2.

No trouble with Chrome on a MacBook Pro.

I just saw that. I’m an atheist but if anyone is a saint, that man is. I can’t think of anyone I admire more.
TaMara (HFG)
Well, this could make the entire impeachment more interesting over here at this to 10K blog.
Thank you for participating in this test.

I was told there would be funny pet videos. Just sayin’.

Running Google Chrome on a desktop Windows PC.
All loaded fine except a bit slow and patchy. Except PBS which would not broadcast to my region (Africa) because of copyright reasons.

@SiubhanDuinne: My thoughts are with him and Rosalyn. He said recently he did not fear death. He may be ready, but I’m not.
FlyingToaster
@FlyingToaster: Vimeo works great, I disabled CNN permanently (just like I block it on cable!) after the fan wouldn’t shut down until I quit Firefox; CBS didn’t autoplay.
Aleta
@Aleta:
PS … None autoplayed.
I have ‘no autoplay’ set for all sites, Safari Macbook.
Barbara
They all played. Chrome, android nook reader. Let me just say that Fiona Hill sounds like the best/worst kind of witness (depending on your side)– the kind who knows so much more than the lawyers that it doesn’t matter what questions they try to ask, because she just reframes them to the question she thinks they should be asking.
James E Powell
MacBook Air & Chrome. MSNBC played. CBS removed. Dr Ruth is a flashing block. PBS plays. CNN nothing is there. Vimeo plays.
Ohio Mom
@TaMara (HFG): I certainly hope Jimmy Carter recovers but I’m not particularly optimistic. He’s what, 95? And lately he’s been back and forth to the hospital, that is not a good sign for someone his age.
I’m going to take comfort in knowing he has lived long enough to see our country start to right itself.
In other news, it’s been snowing here in southwest Ohio. Looks like a little more than an inch so far. It’s very pretty and I hate seeing it.
SiubhanDuinne
@Jackie:
I’m not either. I suspect that’s true of a lot of us.
Aleta
@Patricia Kayden: I sure wish this country would stop enabling politicians (and others) who use vets to enhance themselves. Or who talk about the military in order to get attention, feel important, pretend to be superior, strong or tough.) It’s sick, and it’s sick that we let it happen.

Above was with ‘all cookies blocked.’ (y OnlTest 3 Ellen and CNN did not play.)
When cookies are not blocked, all five play, pause and restart but NBC is hard to pause.

@TaMara (HFG): ooooo, now that’s exciting.
Can everyone see the Rachel Maddow embed with Maya Cummings?
TaMara (HFG)
@chris: Let’s see if I can embed that kitty.
chris
@TaMara (HFG): Loud and clear.
ETA: Wow! You’re good.
TaMara (HFG)
@TaMara (HFG): A tad big, but hey, that kitty deserves the space, he’s awesome.

All worked great in Chrome and Firefox PC Win(10) and Lenovo laptop. Very cool; thanks.

Elaine Luria has a great new ad out, perfect for her district, where she reads the oath of office holding her Hebrew Bible and explaining why she came around to supporting impeachment.

Here too late for the CBS video, but all the rest play including the one in Comments. No autoplays. Rachel takes a couple seconds to stop.

@TaMara (HFG): Big Cat works great. Agree w. chris, you’re good at this!

@chris: How did they do that at the end?
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
All showed up, played instantly when I clicked, and stopped instantly when I paused (CBS had already been removed). No autoplay, no issues. Elderly Macbook Air, Chrome, uBlock Origin.
I’ve been trying to persuade M. Colette that it’s time to leave California, or at least San Francisco. That last Vimeo vid is Not Helping.

Of course they’re not playable in that case, that is a given when j-script is turned off. Was addressing how much clutter embedding multiple vids creates as well as how much it can (and does) slow page loading – including every refresh. In this case, page load taking around 550% longer solely because of the volume of vids embedded. Each video does not show up without dragging its own additional j-script baggage along with it.
Moral when it comes to many videos: Don’t do that.
chris
@Aleta: Did they do something? Is it one cat and a mirror and deepfake photoshop or two cats? No clue but I sure thought it was a mirror until the end.

All 6 but #2 Schmidt. Android for Samsung 7.
TaMara (HFG)
@NotMax: Good to know – but no one is probably going to load the amount I did tonight. Just testing all my options and trying to give Watergirl enough problems to pass along to the developers if needed.
ETA: And I’m such a bad judge of load times since I’m on fiber optic.

Using Firfefox and the page load is labored and slow the videos above either played randomly or did not display at all and the lag is very bad.

@NotMax: As you say, I have to disable java-s when I’m out where I have little bandwidth or connecting is expensive. Otherwise Bj costs a lot when an autoplay video or meme is put up on a post.
When I need to conserve power (power outage, making the laptop last) it seems like disabling java-s (as well as cookies) helps a lot. But I don’t know for sure; haven’t measured.
Jay
TaMara (HFG)
@Aleta: If something is autoplaying – try and let the poster or another FP know, we can remove it or move it below the fold. It annoys ALL of us, but if it’s expensive, even worse.
Amir Khalid
On my elderly Win7/Firefox laptop I see black rectangles where the first and third videos should be, and blank spaces instead of the others. Oddly, there’s a video title in the first black rectangle.

Hartmann? nothing, otherwise everything went fine. Mac mini just updated to Catalina, and I always use Safari, on 13.0.2. I don’t do nothin’ for blockers unless it’s already programmed. Maddow segment seemed not to want to shut off, as I was just running through things quickly. No problem loading. I am in the boonies and yet have pretty fast download speeds, no cable, no satellite. What is this Java stuff? @TaMara (HFG): Worked fine. Everything’s just fine, ducky, dandy.
I also got a ton of sh*t done the last few days, cleaned out the shed, picked up the garden, cut/primed/painted shelves for pantry. The local farm stand closed for the year selling 1/2 bushel bags of any mix of stuff for $10 so I’m up to my ears in apples, squash, carrots, potatoes. Iz all good.

@TaMara (HFG): Thanks. I notified Adam about the data usage for his autoplay posts, but at the time he replied there was nothing he could do. That was a while ago, and he may have figured it out by now. More recently he had a meme up that kept repeating. I handle it by disabling things on my end, but I’ll let you know next time. Thanks for the offer.

@Aleta
Use a link to the video (with appropriate notice that it is autoplay) in place of embedding it.

Southwest Airlines is operating 49 jets that may not have been properly inspected and should be grounded until it can be determined that they meet U.S. airworthiness standards, according to a top official at the Federal Aviation Administration.
The aircraft in question are among 88 used jets purchased from foreign carriers by Southwest between 2013 and 2017. The planes underwent special inspections, including reviews of their maintenance records, before being cleared to fly, according to the FAA. But now the quality of those inspections is being questioned.
In a memo sent to FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson last month labeled “URGENT: Action Required, Southwest Airlines Airworthiness Concerns,” H. Clayton Foushee, director of the FAA’s Office of Audit and Evaluation, raised concerns about the contractors Southwest had used to inspect the aircraft, noting that subsequent reviews by FAA inspectors and the airline had turned up hundreds of instances of undocumented repairs that were made on the planes that were not identified in previous reviews.
In other instances, Foushee noted, at the time airworthiness certificates were issued, Southwest Airlines “admitted they had not even translated all the maintenance records into English, making a complete check of airworthiness impossible.”

Oh, the humanity! StackPath is running amok and dimming the lights all down Threadkill Lane. Won’t stop even when I try to force-stop page loading. And text entry in this comment is sluggish as hell.
Whatever this is, it’s not ready for prime time.
(I insert parenthetically that there should probably be no need for StackPath in the new site. Fingers crossed about that.)

@Steeplejack
WaterGirl has previously assured us that stackpath will be relegated to swimming with the fishes.

@NotMax:
Whew. I’ma go upstairs to the new thread. In fact, I think I’m going to kill this tab, because it’s probably running weird shit in the background even when it’s not the active one. StackPath is still sporting about.

All played fine for me on safari on iPad.

Test Three – Dr. Ruth from Ellen Tube is reloading non-stop for me. Almost certainly because I’m blocking something, but it’s never failing over, just a constant reload attempt. ublock origin is showing about 1k items blocked every 30 seconds due to reloading.

Test 5 was the best one when viewed through my rss newsfeed service (Feedbin). The video was fully displayed and I only had to click Play to get it going.
Tests 1 and 3 showed up as small icon/regions which would expand to a full size video window when I clicked on them. I would then have to click Play to get them started.
Tests 2 and 4 started as 1 & 3 but would not expand properly, leaving me with no visible way of clicking Play.

@chris: Given the probability of two cats having exactly the same markings like that, and being in the same room together, is about 0, it has to be some deep fake trickery. It was very well done though!

I was going to comment yesterday that I couldn’t load the page under ipad2/Chrome … but I couldn’t load the page under ipad2/chrome.
Today the videos are hidden and I’m on a laptop, and everything seems fine.

What I believe is test 3 is flashing at me. It’s the one under the note about CBS pulling something, and it appears that the number designations are below the videos. I’m using a Win7 laptop and Chrome.
There’s nothing at all in the space for test 5.
