Good morning, everyone !
Mr. Cole mentioned, a week or so ago, that he was getting out his Seasonal Affective Depression ‘light therapy’ lamps. Have concluded that, the way I’ve been feeling the past couple of weeks, maybe I oughta get one or two of those lights for myself.
So, fellow Jackals, if you’d like to tell me your experiences, recommendations, etc.
Is there place to purchase them reasonably other than Amazon ?
Thanks, very much, for whatever help you can give me with this.

@JAFD: Good morning JAFD! What you’re looking for is a “full-spectrum” light or lamp and several places sell both those and just the light bulbs. Target, WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. You can also put full spectrum light bulbs into your regular bathroom fixtures, which helps in the morning. Also available most places the lamps are. I have one in my reading lamp.

Yet we still have a major political party clinging to this and other finite resources that need to be ripped from the ground, often not from friendly places. They’re frustrating investment in renewable technologies that have the best chance of providing jobs in the future and frittering away a resource we need. Plastics are derived from oil and are important in healthcare and other specialized tasks. And this is all before I even get to climate issues.

@satby: I care about Jacy, which is why I haven’t said anything here on BJ, but it is frustrating to be out all that money and get no response. I borrowed the $400 so I go get Jacy the money when she needed it.

@Betty Cracker: it is bullying. I remember there was a First Lady who cared about it that. Yes, I know he has always been a bully and she is full of manure, but I thought I would point it out.
Defamation is a dangerous tort to bring. It has to be something where the allowed discovery into your life is so narrow and the claim so untrue that the risk is near zero. That is why musk got into such trouble. He could not ask the guy for sexy time emails and facts because it was not about sexy time, but about sexy time with children.

@Steeplejack:
My opinion is there is a kind of “fancy lawyer club” and the prestige of the whole is dependent on the prestige of individual members, so they are loathe to admit one of their own is a lying hack. It’s not partisan or ideological- you can be in it Left, Right or Center. I think it’s ultimately self interest, in other words. There’s a lot of it in law- you see it with the vehement denials that the Supreme Court is ideologically driven. If the justices on the Supreme Court are watching Fox news and using that to base their opinions on the health care law, that cannot be admitted, because it reflects poorly on the whole elite lawyer category. If the whole is a sum of its parts, and they admire the whole (elite legal circles), Barr has to be ethical or the whole is degraded. So they’ll keep him in the ethical category long past when he should have been.

@Steeplejack:
But what it really means for the public, because these people are presented as experts, is that they cannot be trusted. Something is getting in the way of their judgment. They’re not seeing people like Barr clearly. So what is that? What gives Barr credibility and why didn’t they withdraw it when it became clear he’s dishonest?

@germy:
Okay, let me try to shed some light here. Baud’s exchange with Adam L. Silverman occurred in this thread on Tuesday, September 24.
Adam’s “flounce” comment came a week later, on Wednesday, October 2:
But in fact Baud had comments in multiple threads all through that week, including on that same morning of the 2nd.
I haven’t seen anything since then, but I quit looking after I decided this was pretty much a nothingburger. Maybe Baud got Trump fatigue, or maybe he got blog fatigue. Certainly some other regular commenters have been scarce lately. Or maybe he’s sipping a cool drink on a beach somewhere. He has gone walkabout before, I think.

@rikyrah: Now here’s an example of media bias that (mercifully) has nothing to do with politics:
DeAngelo Williams was drafted by the Carolina Panthers, played 9 years in the NFL for them, & holds or shares 16 franchise records. At the end of his career he played 2 years for the Steelers.
So why did NBC News refer to him as a “former Pittsburgh Steelers running back?”
For the sake of clicks. The Carolina franchise has no significant national fan base. Whereas you couldn’t pull the fire alarm in a sports bar in any corner of the US on Sunday afternoons in the fall & not see a few Tar&Piss** jerseys in the crowd that stumbles out – most of whose wearers are despicable bandwagoners with scant or no connection to the depopulated former steeltown languishing along the Three Sewers. (FTR, Cole gets a pass – Bethany is within 50 miles of Condiment Colosseum***, um, Heinz Field, so it’s his hometown team.)
** Stealer [sic] fans call the uniform colors “black & gold;” the rest of the universe knows better.

@chopper: A campaign aide already has — by warning Democrats in the primary not to address HB or Ukraine in the upcoming debate. A few (Harris, O’Rourke, Booker) have said in response to reporter questions on the trail that they wouldn’t want family members to serve on the boards of foreign companies because it’s not a good look. The moderators are 100% going to bring it up. My guess is the candidates will repeat the line that there’s no evidence the Bidens did anything wrong and turn the question around to Trump and his grifting hell-spawn, but it’ll be awkward.

I also noted with sadness that the prosecution that led to yesterday’s arrest started well before Barr’s tenure. I don’t think it would have started after he arrived. The most ass-covering way prosecutors show corruption is not interfering in investigations and prosecutions- it’s not taking them up. And we’ve already seen that Barr will do that- he did it with the Ukraine call. Trump has a fixer and it’s the attorney general of the United States. Thank goodness for the D House majority, is all I can say. They almost got the whole works. They were really fucking close.

Oy vey, enough with food fads already. Yesterday was the monthly grocery getting jaunt into town. At one supermarket passed through the aisle where the spaghetti sauces are and saw a jar labeled “Kale Pesto And White Cheddar Sauce.”
Something’s up with grocery stores as well. Ended up going to three different stores before was able to find garlic powder. Gave up altogether after the third store trying to find unsweetened iced tea mix (empty slots on the shelf in all three). And it may be the result of a new manager, but Costco as well was out of a good half dozen items they’ve always had available – this includes their own house brand items (signage present but empty space where the product should be).

I’m so old I can remember when “citizen journalism” was going to save us all from the in-the-bag mainstream media. I don’t know how this sort of stuff is going to be outlawed. You really can’t bind people to some attenuated law that says they may or may not work for so and so. I would settle for “no hiring relatives in government” like every county and municipality has. That was a good rule! Try that one!

Hello again,
I’m living in basically a studio apt in ye senior citizens’ building, so replacing all the lightbulbs’ kinda impractical.

Thinking I want a ‘floor lamp’ on pole fixture so I can move it around if I want more light elsewhere.

Just getting up and checking in. A busy night. My marine vet buddy and his wife and cats had to evacuate their home, it may burn in what called the Saddleridge fire. This would be the third, and they say the last time for them, they will move rather than rebuild. The house my ex and I owned may be gone. She and her husband moved 6 weeks ago, their house and the one we owned down the street are less than 1/4 mile from the start point of the fire. Which being a city street I’d guess that this is an arson fire or a tossed cigarette.
On to shitty business. That tweet from Southpaw, showing those five fake sycophants attempting to grin, like guilty 5 yr olds is ridiculous. It says fucking guilty better than any judge ever could. And that’s for a news photo? Never seen so many assholes all in one photo.

@Immanentize: Yeah I did. It’s disturbing. I’m torn by it, bc I know what it’s like to be the adult child of a parent who is a stubborn curmudgeon, & refuses to admit their limitations.
There were some things I learned never to fight with my father about because unless I had all the arguments on my side, I’d just end up losing while alienating him before the next battle. Sometimes all you can do is hope that the doctors speak clearly in one voice that it’s time to retire gracefully, but it’s pretty clear that’s not what happened here.
It’s possible that his kids aren’t even all the way into the loop on their father’s health. & Sander’s wife doesn’t get to decide for him either bc clearly he’s competent even if he’s not fully healed. When there’s still a spouse that can happen; I had no idea how bad my father’s knees had gotten before my mother had the trip abroad from hell, threw up her hands & refused to travel with him again until he fixed them. (& that still took a while).
