Here's the letter Biden deputy campaign manager @KBeds sent NYT editor Dean Baquet. "Are you truly blind to what you got wrong in 2016, or are you deliberately continuing policies that distort reality for the sake of controversy and the clicks…?" https://t.co/fCJ8Ii32Ds pic.twitter.com/DoVzSm5MXI

Between this and Biden’s call for impeachment, I think his campaign is catching up to the inevitable fact that inevitability alone is not a campaign strategy.

Good to see Biden catching on and catching up. Especially since he is the one I might be crawling over broken glass to vote for.

NYT, a fully owned subsidiary of the Rs.
But they have a mean crossword puzzle.
Treason and Mind Teasers its one great package.
My vice was the Recipe section but since Mark Bittman’s departure its not as good as it used to be. Although its still one of the best recipe sites out there.

@schrodingers_cat: Actually, the NYT crossword varies in quality and difficulty.

@cleek: They’ve monetized their recipes section. You have to pay for an extra subscription fee (although it seems you can get a few free with a Sunday menu for the week column).
I hope the WaPost and LA Times never follow the FTF GF NYTimes’ lead on that.

@MattF: The crossword puzzle varies in difficulty intentionally: easiest on Mondays, a little harder on Tuesdays, and so on until the most challenging on Saturdays.
But you are on target on the varying quality. For an informed critique of the puzzle’d quality, I recommend Rex Parker’s blog, “Rex Parker does the NYT’s crossword puzzle.”
Elizabelle
Yesterday the FTF GF NYTimes published an op ed by Peter Schweitzer, author of “Clinton Cash” — and somehow neglected to identify him as that. His screed took on Joe and Hunter Biden, and Mitch McConnell-Elaine Chao, for self-dealing. It mentioned the word “Trump” once. As in Chao’s employer.
Not a word about emoluments, or any Trump corruption. Just smear the Bidens by putting them in there against McConnell-Chao, who truly are corrupt and bad news for democracy.

Impeach Dean Baquet! A national campaign would be nice.

A responsible news organization should not print one word about political smears until there is actual credible evidence. This goes doubly if the accuser stands to benefit from the smear getting printed whether it is true or not. I don’t understand why this is so difficult.

From the letter:
I think this is an excellent tactic. Not just because it’s directed at the NYT (which obviously deserves it) but also because it’s from a very establishment Democrat who is pushing back on the media in a way that calls out the media’s ethics and motivation.
Republicans do this sort of thing all the time. Democrats tend to do it much less in general and less effectively overall. It’s part of how “the liberal media” concept got cemented in our politics. Democrats end up playing defense on that idea and this letter is an example of playing offense. More of this please.
Cheryl Rofer
Back in the day, the Times investigated why they got some stories badly wrong. It took them some time, but it at least gave the impression of something like responsible reporting. They did long investigations on the aluminum tubes for Iraq and on Wen Ho Lee.
I’m thinking they need to look back at all their coverage of Donald J. Trump, maybe even back to the lawsuit against his father for housing discrimination. Maybe even further back than that. How did reporters look at Trump? What bribes did he offer? and so much more.
jc
Conservatives never hesitate to browbeat the mainstream media for what they perceive as a “liberal bias.” It’s long past time that Democrats likewise put serious pressure on news outlets that support whack-job conspiracies by the right.
Elizabelle
@Redshift: Whoa! Somehow that little detail was not divulged either.
gvg
I am not sure Biden can fight this for this election, but I think this is a good step for starting to find a way for democrats to learn to always have a strategy for these kinds of situations and start getting more of the voters to be more…woke(?) about what has been going on. I know several very liberal voters that really have absorbed too much republican framing especially about Hillary and plenty of younger voters just assumed she was corrupt (Kapernick for example) and they also just accept that things like unions are bad and that social security won’t be there, etc.
We have to re train the media. Old tactics of ignoring just don’t work. This might not work enough, but it is at least trying and doing something new.
MattF
@Cheryl Rofer: I think there’s a NYC newspaper culture of indulgence towards local ‘eccentric’ personalities. Trump got the benefit of that, and it’s never been re-examined.

That’s the reporter covering Trump promoting a book that trashed Clinton, and telling us the reporter who covered Clinton “got her hands on it”
And they’re still promoting the same author, except now it’s Biden.
I’m still wondering how no one over there “got their hands on” anything about Trump and Guiliani, considering the fact that both men operated in their fucking backyard for 50 years. which actually goes a long way towards explaining how their Trump coverage seems to be run through Rudy Guiliani.

Chinese officials provided open-source material on Hunter Biden to Trump adviser
BY MICHAEL WILNER
OCTOBER 10, 2019 11:38 AM
An adviser to President Donald Trump who received material from Chinese officials last week on Hunter Biden’s dealings with Beijing told McClatchy on Thursday that its contents do not expand on publicly available information.
Michael Pillsbury, an informal White House adviser on China policy, told the Financial Times on Thursday that he received “quite a bit of background” in recent days from Chinese officials on the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
Trump publicly encouraged the Chinese to investigate Hunter Biden’s dealings in Beijing last Friday.

Funny, but that’s exactly how I feel about Biden and Harris. I don’t find either giving me any sort of reaction other than “meh.” Biden, because I have known of him and seen him since I was a pre-teen and I don’t expect him to change or be any better than he ever has been. And Harris because I don’t find her engaging and her flip flops and barely fleshed out policy plans aren’t anything other than meh. I find her milquetoast in the extreme.
The only ones that I am excited by, have given money to and would go all out to support are Warren and Booker. I would very much like to see that ticket.

@schrodingers_cat:
No. Rikyrah is admonished for putting up tweets from blowhards with concerns about EW. What those concerns are (aside from electability) we don’t know because we don’t know the blowhards.
rikyrah had a very good, and expressed in her own words, comment about African Americans’ distrust of revolutions, since they are always the ones with the most to lose and hardest to fall, and (I would add) those whose concerns rarely come to the forefront. I believe that, too, but it was also not news to me or anyone else who has volunteered in politics for years. I have wondered if EW has some problems with being too closely affiliated with the shouty, lily white one from the great Northeast.
Mnemosyne has a great comment upthread about AA voters being concerned white voters won’t vote for a woman — 2016 had a lot of misogyny on display. I think that’s a solid concern, and comment.
Personally, I would like to see Warren/Harris or Harris/Warren and go down swinging. It is time.
Further, we ALL get that you have your concerns about EW. Do you think we’re illiterate too?
schrodingers_cat
@geg6: Truth be told I am not 100% sold on anyone yet. I like Harris and Beto. I also liked Buttigieg better in the debates than I did during his TV interviews. In them he sounded too both-sidery. He has sharpened his message since then.

The haranguing will continue until we all fall in line and back her preferred candidate. Whoever that is…I’m guessing Harris, but I may be wrong about that. However, you are one of the commenters who have gone all in on bashing Warren and everything she says or does. And that’s fine. It just means I won’t be paying much attention to anything else you have to say about the primary or the candidates. As I said above, I have no real idea who you support. However, your and others’ continuous contempt for Warren does not make me feel any warm fuzzies for anyone you decide to support, that for sure. I’m over this shit. I lived through 2016 and I’m not going to quietly sit back and let people tear down a perfectly good candidate, especially compared to Biden, for absolutely no reason again.

I honestly have seen little evidence that she can take anyone down. She has not impressed me in any of the debates, even the one where she supposedly murdered Joe Biden on stage. It was so obviously rehearsed and staged. Maybe never having lived in California or really knowing anything about her, I’m immune? But from what I can see of the polls, the denizens of her own state are not impressed either. I just don’t get why people are so in love with her. But then, I feel the same way about Buttagieg and Biden. They are perfectly fine in the offices they currently or recently held, but not presidential material in my book.

DON’T pay attention to the ‘dirtbag left’. Take that from me, ‘cos I was very sympathetic and looked into it a lot deeper than most of you, and ended up knowing more.
It’s straight-up Russian disinformation largely managed on sites that can be manipulated using troll farms. Not so much 4chan but very much Reddit, and that’s how I worked out what it really was (BIG disappointment to me). The hard lefties themselves are not automatically Russian-controlled, but when you say ‘dirtbag left’ that’s a particular set that have been co-opted, their social places taken and controlled. I’ve seen it being done. Any social media place that can either be swarmed (such as by ‘Bernie Bros’ who are plainly Russian controlled) or vote-bombed (Reddit: if you post something on a ‘dirtbag left’ subreddit there is IMMEDIATE coordinated vote brigading to bury the unwanted thing, plus any unwanted comments on desirable-to-Russia posts). And they definitely have wanted Sanders, probably because of kompromat and the belief they could flip in the general election and bury him completely.
It seems like the Russians don’t want Warren at all. That makes me like her more. They’re working hard on all fronts to take her down. I think they want to run against Sanders or Biden, probably in the belief that they can screw either old white man over more effectively once it’s the general.
As for the ‘dirtbag left’ you cannot curry favor from Russian operatives as a political strategy. Never ever try to appease the ‘dirtbag left’.
