There’s a shitload of breaking news about Trump and Ukraine and other shit, but it’s Friday night and it can wait until tomorrow. Not like anything is going to happen to him tonight.
The leaves are starting to change and drop here, finally, and it has been cool and overcast all day. I’ve had to start taking sinus meds again because this is the time of year I get allergies, when all the leaves drop and get wet and moldy. Time to prepare for the long dark months. Get the SAD lamp out of the closet, take the ac unit out, find the space heater, start taking vitamin D, and buying flowers once a week so I don’t get too depressed. The usual.
Anything exciting going on your ways?

I’m sitting here with my iPad watching a HS football game in Camas, WA. My daughter is in the marching band so i come to all the games. Friday Night Lights baby.
The football players are all wearing pink socks. The Komen thing has filtered down to the HS level.

Never know John, Trump could stroke out during the night. Always look at the bright side of life.

Rest in Power to an Icon… Miss Diahann Carroll.
I’m really too young to know her from Julia, but Julia does have a special place in my heart. My own gran, who’s also 84 years old, is a retired nurse and had been a nurse for my entire life until fully retiring after having a stroke bout 10 years ago.
Julia was a Black woman, mother and nurse, all things my granny was at the same time. Also too, the first actually Barbie doll my mom ever had.
Rest in Power to not just a Black icon, but an American icon and trail blazer!

Yesterday, made a cake which purports to be the world’s best chocolate cake . My test panel today (various coworkers) concluded that it was very good, but best in the world may be just a tad exaggerated. I’d agree. Still a good recipe though, and not hard to make even for a beginner at cakes.

I went hiking here today which I highly recommend:
C Stars
It’s feeling fall-ish here in Nor Cal as well, and for our family the change of season came with a dreadful respiratory thing. Three of us spent the day in bed and the third is completely fine and unaffected and currently jumping up and down incessantly on the downstairs couch, so go figure. Today I’ve been sucking on zinc and compulsively, miserably checking the headlines. Cole, I’m impressed by your winter self-care regimen. How do those SADD lamps work? I’ve always been sorta curious about getting one.
ETA Three of us in bed and the FOURTH is fine…gah, too much theraflu…

I turned on the heat for the first time. October 5th???
I don’t like turning it on until November 1st.
26 Days too soon.??
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Kay: Hiking’s good, but that location is a bit of commute for me.

@lamh36:
She was so beautiful
So glamorous
This little Black girl was stunned when she first saw Ms. Carroll
There had been no one like her
RIP??

@rikyrah: I’ve been tempted to light the pilot light on my furnace, it’s been getting into the high 40’s outside a few nights this past week.

Baseball stuff:
Does anyone have any idea what announcers Smoltz and Costas are talking about re the relative importance of home runs in playoff games as opposed to home runs in the regular season? They said that you don’t worry so much about solo home runs in the playoffs.
Did I slide into an alternate universe? Have I had a stroke? Am I on “Candid Camera”? What is going on?
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@?BillinGlendaleCA: I’ve been thinking between the news of a second WB– per the NYT, one of the first WB’s sources is weighing whether it’s necessary/worth it to get the specific legal protections–and the Washington Post article showing someone from his early inner circle is definitely leaking–my money’s on Hope Hicks and/or McMaster– he could have his Elvis moment on the hopper any time
Kent
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: there’s also the other IRS whistleblower. That one is gaining momentum too. I gotta think a peek at Trumps taxes would blow the whole corruption thing absolutely wide open.
The man is probably the biggest tax cheat in the history of the country.
Yarrow
@lamh36: She was amazing. RIP.
Kent
@Hungry Joe: regular season they will stick with a pitcher. At least until the middle innings. Playoffs they go through a lot more pitchers. Especially in close games. That’s the only way I see the games as being played different.
They may also be pitching more for strikeouts in the playoffs. Risking more solo home runs trying to keep runners off base. But I don’t know.

@NotMax: Most publications are going with “first Black woman in a NON-SERVANT ROLE”.
Also too..
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I think that was Fred, but only because the old man was smarter and had more money
Another Scott
@rikyrah: As a kid I had a huge crush on her from watching Julia. I don’t doubt for a minute that she was the inspiration for “black Barbie”.
RIP.
Cheers,

While hers was not a leading role, Nichelle Nichols on Star Trek premiered two years before Julia.

I’m 55 and I don’t really know that much about Diahann Caroll. I mean I’ve heard of her but not in the Paul Robeson or Lena Horne or Sidney Pointier icon sort of way.
I mean I maybe remember seeing her on the Love Boat or something.
Am I too young or just fucking clueless?
lamh36
@NotMax: Good gawd…what is your problem…
FIRST AFRICAN AMERIAN WOMAN IN A NON-SERVANT LEADING ROLE WHERE SHE WAS THE MAIN CHARACTER WITH SHOW NAMED AFTER SAID CHARACTER…
Jeezus…is that enough for you?

@?BillinGlendaleCA:
It has a dam – I love those.
The dam burst in 1888 and destroyed the village so they built it again only to have it burst again in 1912 – at which point maybe they gave up and made it a state park
They had a post office! But it wasn’t to be.
lamh36
@Kent: Sorry to say, but more like fuckin’ clueless.
And if ya don’t mind me asking, but are you African American? Cause even if you have at least in ur 20s, then you’d know who Diahann Carroll was, she actually worked consistently up until even last year I believe
ETA: and if you know Robeson, Poitier and Horne, then you should know Diahann Carroll who’s been in films with ALL of them

@lamh36
Just giving a modicum of credit to some who paved the way.

@lamh36: Diahann Carroll and Nichelle Nichols were influential in my youth; the former showed me quiet strength; the latter inspired a love of science, sci-fi, and space. RIP Ms. Caroll.

A distinction of note. Which is why I linked to the African American Registry site. If they have no qualms naming Julia as the second program (of any ilk), that’s good enough for me.

My response was to the description of Julia, not directed to or at Ms Carroll, for whom I have nothing but praise.
If you cannot see the difference, that’s your problem, IMHO.

Avalune and I played a few hours worth of Borderlands 3 tonight. Tomorrow we’re headed to her coworkers place for a Brazilian BBQ. We’re taking some homemade watermelon vodka. Sunday, the town next to us is having their annual Food Truck Fest. It takes place over the entire weekend but we’ll make it Sunday. Today was a high of around 65F and it was glorious.

@lamh36:
Oh, sad news. I loved Diahann Carroll and loved Julia back in its day. She and the show were groundbreaking. May she rest in peace. Thank you, Miss Carroll, for giving this white girl a nicely-rounded image of a black woman who wasn’t a mammy or a maid.

It was 98° this afternoon in my little suburb of Atlanta.

@Kay: Then you’d like Franklin Canyon out here, it’s got a dam(though no bursting). It was also used for the opening of “The Andy Griffith Show”.

@Kent: Sorry but gotta go with clueless on this. If you know of Sindnet Poitier, Paul Robeson, and Lena Horne, you should know of Diahann Carroll.
Kent
@Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho:
No, I’m white and clueless I guess. I of course knew OF her. Just didn’t really know what she did other than the cameo stuff and talk show stuff when she was older. I didn’t watch much TV when I was young as my parents were religious conservatives so I didn’t really start watching TV or many movies until I left home in the 80s and by then it was the Seinfeld era. I looked at her filmography and it is huge but most of it I haven’t seen. I mean I never really even watched Dynasty. Much less 60s TV.

The weather was great today here in my little corner of NoVA. High of about 78°, and it felt energizing to be out and about. I think we are done with the hot weather. It got up to about 94° on Wednesday, but it has been cooling rapidly since then. It’s 55° now, and I had to close the windows a while ago because the breeze coming in was a little too cool. High of 68° tomorrow, then mostly the low 70s over the next 10 days.

I love California. We go just about every year. Last year we hiked in a public area around Rancho Palos Verdes and wandered into this insanely expensive neighborhood that was nearly seamless with the public hiking trails. They should mark it! I was like “I….don’t think we’re in the park anymore”. My son wanted to stay on “their” trails – “this is nice!” – I had to herd him back to the riff raff.

The first here is the first tv show with a black lead that wasnt’ a maid or some other servant. She was a professional, a nurse. So I would say that – that’s pretty amazing.
I’ve dated some black women who have mixed race children, how people assume they are the nanny! ugh.

I ended up while searching and reading about her going into Sidney Poitier’s life. Thankfully still alive. I can understand why there was an attraction. If I was a woman, he’d make me swoon too.

The end of day 1 at Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass. Beautiful weather and warming. Tomorrow Robert Plant headlines the stage I’ll be parked at.
RIP Diane Caroll. Julia was a modern, middle class working mother (Corey!) and was just beautiful.

Interesting weather forecast for the coming week. High on Tuesday is supposed to be 80, low Wednesday night 30. It’s the time of year here when “What season are we having today?” is a perfectly reasonable question to ask before getting dressed for the day.
