We had the good sense to reject a blowhard billionaire out of hand…
This is good news. It’s fairly likely the immediate negative reaction to his candidacy helped drive his decision. Glad to play a small part in that. https://t.co/MolR7RPTp4
— Neera Tanden (@neeratanden) September 6, 2019
Among other things, Schultz's decisions cancels the fear of a "billionaire's veto." He was pretty explicit that he'd run if Dems dared nominate Warren or Sanders. That threat is gone. https://t.co/QJRzGI8yUf pic.twitter.com/mhDWthuKyh
— Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) September 6, 2019
Jokes aside, Schultz’s decision is probably the worst thing that’s happened to Trump’s 2020 odds in months. He’s struggling to break 45% in key states, and an independent “both parties fail us” candidacy would have lowered the threshold for wins.
— Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) September 6, 2019
… While the Repubs aren’t even bright enough to prevent a notorious fake one from taking over their party like all the many other businesses he’s already run into bankruptcy!
Wow. As Trump primary challengers circle, Republican state parties in South Carolina, Nevada, Arizona and Kansas are expected to cancel their 2020 primaries and caucuses @politicoalex? reports. https://t.co/sKGUyy6OrR

So Republican lawmakers are okay with the outright cancellation of presidential primaries in numerous states, all to protect the Cult of Trump from any political competition?

Job growth is down 15% under trump. Seems to me the DEM party is dropping the ball here. I know people aren’t really paying attention yet but I would think a 30 second ad with only this graphic and maybe a voice over could do wonders in setting the stage for 2020.

Fucking insomnia. I don’t want to be awake yet.
It’s been a thing in politics in Ukraine for parties to form basically as cults of personality – they are even named accordingly: you’d have, for instance BPP, the “Block of Petro Poroshenko” or BYuT, the “Block of Yulia Tymoshenko.” No sense of any party history, or any coherent philosophy, just a coalescing around one leader. Makes for lots of parties, of course, and does not make for permanence. With the decline in Yulia Tymoshenko’s influence, people wander away. So I wonder, as the GOP becomes BDJT, what happens when he inevitably leaves the scene.

You’re thinking of Bloomberg. A two-term limit was (and still is) in place for NYC Mayors, but Bloomberg persuaded (bribed? Who knows) City Council to pass JUST FOR BLOOMIE legislation that he could run for a third term. It was very unpopular; despite Bloomberg’s Democratic challenger basically not running a campaign at all, Bloomberg still only squeaked out a victory (full disclosure: I didn’t vote for him any of the times he ran). Christine Quinn, up until then, was assumed to be heir-in-waiting for the Mayor’s gig, and while real estate money had a LOT to do with de Blasio getting elected following Bloomberg, I think Christine Quinn voting to let Bloomberg run for a third term didn’t help her any.

‘morning everyone.
@OzarkHillbilly: I think they’re mainly doing it because Donnie has (probably) been spending General Election money rather than Primary Election money, and doing similar things, that are illegal under existing laws and rules. This isn’t a “Wow” and this isn’t just about protecting the “Cult of Trump”.
Repost from August 25, NPR from January 4:
(Empahsis added.)
Rules are for little people.
This is about Donnie being able to do whatever he wants, no matter what the rules and norms are. And being able to get his vig from the various GOP campaign committees.
Cheers,

@Another Scott: So Romney’s statement that the President’s character might not be as good as one would hope, is called “unhinged” by a 30-year member of the RNC. Yeah, cult.
Nicole
@Amir Khalid:
Considering what a crooked, reprehensible human being Giuliani is, I’m not surprised one would assume he pulled that particular bit of shenanigans, too. But he wasn’t rich like Bloomberg, so the best he could do was propose the idea and have the good folk of NYC say, “Fuckouttaheah.” Bloomberg did an end run around the voters, via the City Council. How did he persuade them? Who knows, but he’s got more money than God, so…
For what it’s worth, I don’t believe in term limits, but it’s what NYC voted for, back when, and if that’s the law, then politicians should respect that. Not cool what Bloomberg did. Not cool. Shame on him and the City Council.

As a weather geek the NOAA statement is just appalling. Glad to see people pushing back against it.

@Ken: Of course Donnie is trying to start a cult, and the GOP is more than happy to be that vehicle. But that’s not mainly what this is about. Donnie’s breaking the laws and rules and the GOP is (effectively) trying to rewrite the rules to protect him.
If they were competent they would have changed the rules after Donnie won. But they’re not, so they didn’t, and now they’re scrambling. If they were a competent cult, they wouldn’t have these self-inflicted problems.
And this isn’t surprising. They’ve been working on it since at least January because they know having primaries is a problem beyond Donnie getting upset and throwing a tantrum.
Cheers,
Scott.

The Denmark contingent miss these three things: air conditioning, Costco, screens in windows.
Also my son is a little ranty about the number system in the Danish language, not the numbers, which are the same, but the words used to describe numbers, which he is learning. He insists they’re using a “base 20” when the whole rest of the world uses “base ten”. He calls it “playing God with mathematics”. So the word for “70” means “1/2 of 80” which is FORTY. I have no idea what he’s talking about but it’s amusing.

The French case is different, and not nearly as weird. “Quatrevingt” means “four-twenty”, implicitly “four-times-twenty”. “Halvfjerds” means “half-eighty” (though “eighty” is “firs”, not “fjerds”) but the significance is something like “half-way-to-eighty-if-you-begin-at-sixty”. [It has its roots in an archaic system for saying 1 1/2, 2 1/2 etc.]
And “quatrevingt” is a one off exception, while “halvtres”, “halvfjerds”, “halvfems” are systematic for 50, 70, 90. And “fems” is not “hundrede”.
It’s just fricking weird. I learned the language as a teenager, and still speak it fluently many decades later, and the number thing still screws me up regularly.
Norwegian [Bokmål] is nearly identical to Danish in its vocabulary, but they don’t do this.

Having a family member run is almost a necessity and nearly SOP for dictators. You need to have someone you trust to not throw you in jail after you leave office. . You can bet its on Donald’s mind. So you stay as long as you can, (which means no holds barred this election) and then eventually, after disestablishing democracy, leave the office to family. They finally had enough of Mugabe when he tried to make his wife the next president after 40 years.
The funny thing is he won the office so easily — no knowledge, just bluster and selling out to anyone who would help — that he probably thinks it would be just as easy for one of his kids. He has no sense of the complexity of the world he has blustered his way into.

@Dev Null: The only total list is in the database, and us mere mortals can’t access it directly. According to Watergirl, the next version of the site is to have a decent site-search function.
I use Google to search for things here, using a form like:

Not that there are some comments missing from the current database (e.g. some comments by efgoldman) apparently the result of database corruption over the years. If you know something is out there and it doesn’t show up in Google, you can try looking at archived copies of the site at web.archive.org Unfortunately, unless you know the date, it’s hard to find things in archived copies there. (I don’t know of a way to do a similar search there as the one quoted above.)

New York Magazine has an Ivanka podcast out, one episode free and I’m not going to pay for that, but in the one free one I did waste a half-hour on, the hosts (an NY journalist who moved in overlapping social circles with the Kushners) said that Ivanka and her innercircle genuinely believe she has a political future. I don’t see it, because as @Frankensteinbeck: says, I don’t think any of the LACs can speak to the racist id of the GOP base like their father can. Freddo would come closest, I think, but just the other day he tried to hold a rally they couldn’t fill half the space.
ETA; one tidbit that did make me chuckle: Grifterella likes to use big words she doesn’t really understand. She told one interviewer that she and her kids wake up at the crepuscule of dawn.
