So, this might happen:
Hurricane Dorian is now projected to grow into a Cat. 4 storm.
One of the most accurate storm predictions, the European Model expects a track that would strike a full frontal blow on Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.#ThursdayThoughts pic.twitter.com/x7y7HfPVsP
— Grant Stern (@grantstern) August 29, 2019
I think it’ll come ashore further north and spare Disgraceland. But isn’t it pretty to think so?
Kristine
I just read that the T-word canceled his trip to Poland in order to monitor Dorian. I wonder if that’s the reason. I can’t believe he’d care if it threatened anywhere else.
mapaghimagsik
Its irresponsible not to speculate!
Lapassionara
Hmmmmm. Looks terrifying. Stay safe, BC
JPL
@Kristine: That was my thought as well. Maybe it will flatten the Doral bungalows also.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Kristine: he hates to travel, and I’m sure he’s still bitching about being in France last weekend. II’m sure he was glad to have an excuse to cancel
JPL
Betty, What are your plans?
Kristine
@JPL: I’m sure he’s checking with his financial folks to make sure the property values are sufficiently inflated in case of insurance claims. “Vacation hairpieces: $10 million each.”
PaulWartenberg
sad thing for me (and Betty and a few other Florida Juicers) is that the way the storm is approaching Florida we’re all going to get hit with at least a Cat 1 storm after the time it hits Mal-A-Loogie as a Cat 4.
It’s kind of a good news bad news deal. But if one week of power outages in my county means trump’s crown jewel gets washed out into the Atlantic Ocean like the wrath of God, it might be worth it. Just hope nobody gets killed as it happens.
Betty Cracker
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I was thinking the same. It’s been reported on other excursions that the low quality hires who staff the trips can’t figure out how to stream Fox News, and it’s probably harder to acquire overdone steaks with ketchup, etc., abroad.
mrmoshpotato
Hopefully it washes DumpaGrifto and all its bedbugs out to sea.
Betty Cracker
@JPL: I’ll probably stay home. Since we moved last year, we don’t have to worry about storm surge anymore. Our river might flood, and that would definitely suck, but we’re in a stilt house, so we should be okay.
@PaulWartenberg: Yep.
JPL
@PaulWartenberg: A friend stayed at his home in Vero Beach after a hurricane years ago. A week without power was not fun. Be safe.
Keith P.
Florida’s hurricane relief is too expensive. We should trade it to Denmark in exchange for Greenland.
JPL
@Betty Cracker: Be safe. Do you have a generator?
C Stars
Nah, he’s just lazy and would rather hang around and golf/tweet/watch TV. I’ve a feeling he’d cancel no matter where the hurricane was expected. I’m hoping Dorian doesn’t make landfall, and that life and property are spared.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
another angle:
I imagine a few people in the Polish gov’t and military have questions about the reliability of the US as an ally these days. Who wants to be bored with a bunch of people whining in funny accents. Tell Mike to do it. They can talk about the bible or whatever.
Omnes Omnibus
@Betty Cracker: No basement then?
dmsilev
Yes, but what do a bunch of European eggheads know about good old-fashioned American storms?
(conservatives, probably as we speak)
NotMax
When it arrives, will he drop a nuke on Mar-a-lago? //
SiubhanDuinne
All the Florida juicers (and anyone in the path of this thing), please stay safe. And once Dorian makes landfall, do send whatever reassuring updates you’re able to. You know how we worry.
Did this storm hit Dominica? Have we heard from the other Betty?
trollhattan
@JPL:
She has a mirth generator. That’s probably enough.
The storm looks big as a big thing and wider than the whole dang state.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@NotMax: what does the insurance policy say about nuclear hurricanes? is it like double indemnity for a real estate grifter?
TenguPhule
@NotMax:
Its the only way to be sure.
TenguPhule
@Betty Cracker:
Are you sure the stilts can survive hurricane level water surges?
NotMax

As much as I’d like to see the most infiltrated resort in America washed away, hurricanes are blunt instruments and good people will get hurt as well. Let’s hope that it curves out to sea at the last moment.
Also, too, don’t underestimate Trump’s ability to grift. Not only will he do his best to flood Florida with money, in 2-4 years we’ll find out that half the contractors were long-time Republican supporters who delivered minimal relief or reconstruction but nonetheless found ways to make huge PAC donations and/or join his flooded club.
Also, three, the further south it strikes the more likely it is to re-intensify in the Gulf, though that’s a SWAG on my part.
TenguPhule
@NotMax:
If that were so she could have ordered the house to move to a better location.
Bonnie
Yes, it is pretty to think this. Fingers crossed.
Sab
@Omnes Omnibus: Nobody in Florida has basements. The whole state is about ten feet above sea level, and the underground water table is almost that high.
Also snakes. When I lived there as a kid in the 1960s our neighbors had a bomb shelter under their garage, and snakes moving in were a constant challenge.
TenguPhule
@Sab:
Except the serial killers. //
TenguPhule
@dmsilev:
I assume this is Dog’s way of telling Trump to drop out of the 2020 election.
Jerzy Russian
The only downside of the storm hitting Mar-a-Lago is that it will spread the bedbugs around all over the place.
Betty
@SiubhanDuinne: Hi, we were lucky and missed by Dorian – just some heavy rain and wind for the day. The storm has continued to strengthen since it left this area. Sending positive thoughts to all those in its path.
cope
Good luck, Betty. Of course this is the weekend our daughter and her family have booked rooms first at a Disney resort (Friday, Saturday) and then at a Universal resort Sunday (the whole family is bi-parkal since they live in Kissimmee).
I’m pretty sure we will lose power for some time, we always do…6 days last hurricane. The good news: we replaced our old windows with new, screened ones this year so if nothing else, we should be able to get some cross-ventilation without inhaling bugs. I hit Publix this morning and stocked up, cars are gassed and we’re good to go. A quick trip up to Mayo in JAX tomorrow but we’ll be back in the early afternoon.
Stay safe.

The best thing about Trump’s property getting wiped off the face of Florida would be the evangelical interpretive dancing around the point of God’s wrath being so clearly demonstrated. If Jerry Falwell, Jr.’s pool boy could somehow be involved, that would be perfect. A guy can dream …

Hope Betty and all the Florida jackals stay safe. Wouldn’t it be nice if the hurricane would JUST level Mar-A-Stinko and then dissipate?

Called USAA today to resume windstorm and hail coverage on our household policy, as we got slammed by 2 of the last 3 hurricanes. Not looking forward to another hurricane season.

Glad to hear it, Betty, especially after what you went through with Maria. Thanks for checking in!

Gosh Betty, yesterday I was joking when I said your dock was going to become a gator refuge in the storm. Didn’t mean to jinx anything. Having said that, if you could get a picture of yourself sitting in the middle of your new flock, that would be the awesome. I’m not all that sure you could get gators to wave to the camera so I didn’t go there.

Off topic, but has anyone heard from Ruckus?
Jay

@Betty Cracker: Well at least make sure that you have those cheepo charging devices for your phone so you can check in.

@opiejeanne: Its been a couple of days since he posted here ( as I am sure you know.) Yikes.
RAVEN
@opiejeanne: He was here last night, some reason you asked?
C Stars
@TenguPhule: I read that. I’m sure this administration’s enablers are thrilled: the ever-increasing scale of human misery and death at the border detention camps will be a huge selling point for Trump in 2020.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
While now there is doubtless a surfeit of tacky on the property, it was originally built as an estate for Marjorie Merriweather Post (think General Foods and E.F. Hutton). The main structure – a National Historic Landmark, so renovations and alterations scrutinized – and likely some extant outbuildings were there when he bought the place.
Whole shebang sits on a barrier island.

i think it would be really interesting if it hit mar a lago. originally the storm was aiming at puerto rico, then orangemandias tweeted some nasty shit about PR. then lo and behold, the storm shifts, avoids PR and makes a beeline for trump’s house? i mean, that would be great.
RAVEN
@Sab: he posted at noon.
NotMax
@chopper
All the forecasts I’d seen, going back to when it was forming, had the track brushing near to and past Puerto Rico, but none predicting direct landfall there.

@NotMax: was just coming here to point out that Mar a Lago was built in the 1920s by MM Post, and was built to withstand hurricanes. But how I would love to see both Trump’s FL golf courses get washed away.
RAVEN
@Sab: he’s a tough old salt
??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??
@NotMax:
I think I remember reading that here at some point. Still, as much as it is an historical landmark, it being destroyed would hurt Trump’s bottom line, which would serve him right for using his properties as President.
schrodingers_cat
@RAVEN: How is your retirement coming along?
PaulWartenberg
I’ve been looking at battery or solar powered generators because I don’t want to mess with a gas-powered one.
Some of them seem nice especially the ones built for CPAP service – which I *need* – but they’re still too pricey for my librarian’s budget, which is why over the last few years I’ve yet to buy one.
And of course, the local stores are likely sold out by now.
:sigh:
J R in WV
@Betty Cracker:
We used a variety of portable generators over the decades, and our peak was a Yamaha 3K watt generator engineered for camping, which meant it was extra silent. Inside the house you couldn’t hear it running.
More recently we bit the bullet and had a Generac installed, 22KW, it runs everything but the central air. If necessary we could retreat to the basement which is underground enough to be pretty cool. It runs on natural gas, so you need no liquid fuel, it switches over from the grid to the gen-set automatically, starts up after 15 seconds of outage.
Highly recommended!! You can get them with a carb to run on propane, if that service is available in your area.
ETA: It would certainly run a room AC unit if we were to install one with a dedicated 220V line/outlet.

If it does hit, he’ll collect millions in insurance and stifle a laugh about the victims. Or maybe he’ll laugh outright. It’s not like his supporters will care.

I hope you and the Mister and the pups stay safe!

Betty Cracker @ Top:
I hope that’s not just European wishful thinking. I mean, I don’t want Democratic Floridians to get hit with a Cat. 4 hurricane, but if it’s going to hit FL anyway, then Mar-a-Lago deserves be the target.
Of course, Trump will probably just use that as an excuse to defraud and steal even more money from the government.
debbie
@JGabriel:
That does sound like something Donald Tusk would order up in response to Trump’s support of Brexit.
Johnny Gentle (famous crooner)
Nice way to be an asshole. “The hurricane could devastate Florida, destroy homes, displace thousands of people and cause billions in damage, but maybe it’ll get Turmp’s hotel hur hur hur.”
Mai naem mobile
Orange Menace can defraud the insurance company and the government but at this point he is probably making a lot of money from MarLago as a quid pro quo bribing business so not having it usable probably hurts more than the fraud would gain him. Furthermore if he doesn’t win reelection there’s a shelf life to Marlagos money making potential. A lot of damage will make it not usable for at least 6 months. And don’t forget he’s known for not paying his construction/remodel bills. Who is going to work for the asshole when there is plenty of other work available.

C’mon, Dorian. Scatter that SOB all across the Everglades. No FEMA money for you, Cheeto Benito!
opiejeanne
@RAVEN: I asked because the last time I saw him he had just had an ambulance ride and was heading for the VA hospital the next morning, yesterday I think. He was having a lot of dizziness and people were worried. Was he here last night and he’s fine?
Skepticat
Watching Dorian, I’m reaching my usual panic stage as appropriate for a problem about which I can do absolutely nothing but worry. If the intensity and path directly over my island hold, it’s fairly likely I won’t have a home to return to. When I lost a quarter of the house in Floyd, I had money and could made repairs. Now …. well … I don’t wish ill for anyone but very specifically _______, but I do wish the track would shift. Or perhaps Mother Nature will nuke it before it bothers any of us. Paws crossed.

@Skepticat
Stay frosty, stay safe. The worry eats up time and energy which could be put to more productive uses.

Greg
@NotMax:
My worry is that Mar-a-Lago and Doral will be seriously damaged, and Trump will have us pay to fix them since the former is his “Southern White House”, and Doral will be hosting the next G7.
droog
China better clear all of its spies out of Mar-A-Lago pronto. Don’t wait until the last minute, China. You can’t expect for large groups of people to flee with ease on short notice if all the roads are jammed or flooded. Especially when they have so much kit to carry with them.
chopper
@NotMax:
dead thread, but this is wrong. you can go through the NHC advisories and the one in effect at the time trump started tweeting had the predicted path go right through PR.
