That’s amazing.

@SFAW: That’s adorable!
Mnemosyne
It’s fascinating to see the extent to which DNA is changing our understanding of the other animals. It was assumed for a long time that bats must be closely related to rodents, but it’s more like whales:

I’ve been super busy and not around as much, so I think I’ve been missing a lot of political angst. It’s probably for the best.
Amir Khalid
Is that you, Adam? You look totally adorable.
ThresherK
Ladybug pacifier?
The gauntlet to the kitten grabbing its bottle has been thrown.
Elizabelle
I can’t believe they have pacifiers that tiny. With ladybugs, yet. What a darling little flying fox.
Adam L Silverman
@Amir Khalid: Only when I’m relaxed, have my ladybug pacifier, and am getting belly scritchees.
opiejeanne
@Elizabelle: For premies, maybe?
Felanius Kootea
That’s so adorable :).
Kristian Doak
Good news from Phoenix! It looks like we beat back the Koch-funded efforts to kill public transportation and gut public spending – by a two-to-one margin no less! #WeBuiltItYouBastards
It’s hard to say just how happy this makes me.

Orphaned elephants bottle feeding at dwst.org (Yashar Ali got me hooked on these.)

That is adorable. Awww… That ladybug pacifier is too much.

Oh god, trump tweeted something crazy (I know I know) about bedbugs and Doral and Bret Stephens. And this is all about a tweet that had nine likes before Stephens’s email. Brilliant modern example of the Streisand Effect

That is super duper cute.

@Major Major Major Major: I saw that tweet from T. It’s like timelines are crossing. So bizarre.

I’ve been missing a lot of political angst
I envy you this.

Adam L Silverman
@Mary G: They look so youthful!
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Mary G: Uh, I fail to see a problem with that. Doesn’t sound like the YAAS boys have ever had a dog.
?BillinGlendaleCA
Looks like Adam has bats in his belfry.
Yarrow
@Mary G: What in the world is that organization? Looks like some kind of propaganda outlet.
Speaking of socialism, I was behind a truck yesterday that had one bumper sticker: “You Beto Socialism Sucks!” Super clever, dude.
Mary G
@Adam L Silverman: The replies are great.
Mary G
@Yarrow: It’s prolly funded by Koch or one of the grifting wannabes.
mrmoshpotato
Look at those wing bones! Batty bones!
smike
@Mary G:
Well, obviously we pay good Mercan dogs what they’re worth. I mean, we do, don’t we?
Elizabelle
@Mary G: I never tire of seeing corgis.
A response to that tweet:
mrmoshpotato
@Mary G: @Yarrow: Young Americans That Should Be Punched In The Crotch With Some Knowledge
“Waaahhhj sochialisms! I don’t want Medicare or Social Security payments when I’m older. And fuck the Interstates!”
mrmoshpotato
@mrmoshpotato: A bat should give rabies to Charles Koch.
Vengeance indeed!
Yarrow
@Mary G: Probably. Their “founder” is a young woman, of course. All those old white guys as the “advisory board” but put the young good looking woman out as the face of the organization.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mary G: Neither of them is going anywhere, so the dog who is only using one foot on the treadmill is going nowhere more efficiently. A napping dog would be the most efficient.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Omnes Omnibus:
My dogs are very efficient.
mrmoshpotato
@Omnes Omnibus: And a (previously) napping dog could more stealthily sneak up on the Young Amerikkkans Against the Socialisums.
What would the dog do? Bite ’em on the crotch.
Omnes Omnibus
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Many are. This would be a good question for the pet lovers here. Using our new standard of efficiency, which are more efficient, dogs or cats?
Mary G
@Elizabelle: That was my favorite too.
mrmoshpotato
@Omnes Omnibus: @?BillinGlendaleCA: More information needed.
More efficient at what?
You two are terrible scientists. :)
Mary G
@Omnes Omnibus: Cats are champion sleepers and hate riding in cars. Most cats hate harnesses, leashes, and walking in a straight line, so by your “going nowhere” standard, cats rule.
Amir Khalid
@mrmoshpotato:
Napping, of course.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Wouldn’t a dog napping on the treadmill end up getting dumped off the back end of the treadmill? I think one foot dog may be more efficient. It could take more energy to get tossed off the end of the treadmill while asleep, awake with a start, and have to get up and get back on than it does to stand there and disinterestedly move one leg.

@mrmoshpotato My reply to your large lemon/tiny grapefruit question disappeared to wherever comments go. I usually read long-dead threads so that was doubly annoying.
Late frost caused the fruit to fall when it was lemon-sized, in 1984 and a number of years after. Winters grew gradually warmer, so for maybe the last 8-10 years they grew into full-sized pink grapefruit. Probably grown from a previous owner’s compost heap or maybe planted, these were not the sweet ruby red type, they had quite a tang, but I liked them. Gone with the Paradise fire, along with the persimmon, pear, peaches, pomegranates, red and prune plums, apple, fig, almond, walnut, and two kinds of cherries. The kiwis had died out of old age, and deer ate the red and the green grapes down to nubs so long that they died also.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mary G: Honestly, as a certified dog person, I think you are generally correct. But then, there is their need to chase the red dot from a laser pointer.
@mrmoshpotato: I told you once.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: There is no real reason for the dog to be on the treadmill, is there?
Eljai
@Kristian Doak: That is good news! Seems like a hopeful sign that people are not buying into the fear and smear tactics against public transportation.
smike
@CapnMubbers:
Sounds like a great place, which I don’t doubt that it was.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: There is not, at least as far as we know. Since both dogs were on moving treadmills already I kind of figured that was our baseline. Perhaps not?
mrmoshpotato
@Amir Khalid: That’s unclear. No grant money awarded(?).
Is that the right term?
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Some of my neighbor’s cats get “crazy cat” from time to time and run around the place like something’s chasing them. There is nothing chasing them. I deem that behavior inefficient.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: I would also say that there is no need for the treadmill to be plugged in.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Along those lines, there is no reason for the treadmill at all.
CapnMubbers
@smike: It was a great place. Not a House Beautiful property; I took a very laissez-faire approach to yard work and shared freely with birds and critters (which means I scrambled to harvest “my” share before the trees were completely stripped).
HumboldtBlue
Talk about a belly rub, few things warm and tingle like Liverpool smacking Barcelona around as is their wont at
Anfield.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Omnes Omnibus: If food isn’t involved, no.
NotMax
@Yarrow
Highly efficient, to burn up enough energy to convincingly bother you later on with plaintive pleas of hunger.
mrmoshpotato
@CapnMubbers: Thanks for the lengthier explanation. Much obliged.
To be honest, I was merely curious as I’m in the Midwest.
As for the disappearing of comments, I always copy mine (select all, copy) to the clipboard before posting. Just in case WordPress is in a mood. Then the comment can be pasted when WP recovers from its tissy.
Yarrow
@NotMax: I’m the jaded cat sitter. I’m not buying it. They need to try harder.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: So now we enter the realm of economics. First, assume a treadmill.
Mary G
@CapnMubbers: What a terrible loss, I am sorry.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@mrmoshpotato: The new version of the site will fix that…and get rid of Trump, end global warming, end hunger, and give everyone free healthcare.
CapnMubbers
@mrmoshpotato: That’s a great idea. I could learn to do that on the iPad that substitutes for my lamented Mac desktop.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Omnes Omnibus:
We just do that, to make things easy enough for lawyers to understand.
mrmoshpotato
@?BillinGlendaleCA: I won’t ask for more, but beware the Wilmer bros who won’t think the new site is pure enough and demand rainbow-farting unicorns.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@mrmoshpotato: Good news, unicorns are included; bad news, no rainbows.
Omnes Omnibus
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Huh?
mrmoshpotato
@CapnMubbers: This might help (I’m not an iPad user) – https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/how-to-select-copy-and-paste-text-on-the-ipad
mrmoshpotato
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Will everyone get a puppy? Will the unicorns look after the puppies?
Omnes Omnibus
@mrmoshpotato:
Christ no. Not with their coke habit. Why do you hate puppies?
CapnMubbers
@Mary G: Thank you. My community is gone; around 3,000 population now, down from 28,000+/- . The water is unsafe (so many plastic meters and meter boxes burned with the 18,000 structures that the system depressurized and drew contaminants into all the lines; the visual devastation is depressing, most businesses will not return soon, and insurance companies are not writing in that area and others. No reason for me to rebuild.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Economics, you say? Is it more economical to have one treadmill per pup or one treadmill total and only one dog at a time can use the treadmill? Dogs not on treadmill may include unanticipated cost.
mrmoshpotato
@Omnes Omnibus: LMAO! Again – clarity! Who has the coke habit – the unicorns or the puppies?
You’re not going to get that NSF grant.
CapnMubbers
@mrmoshpotato: Thanks. I’m trying that now and bookmarked the page.
Omnes Omnibus
@mrmoshpotato: The unicorns of course. I am holding out for a fucking MacArthur Fellowship. I have my standards.
smike
@CapnMubbers:
I live in pines and take the same approach. Living with nature, as permissible, can be enjoyable at times.
Yarrow
@CapnMubbers: So sorry. Absolutely devastating.
@mrmoshpotato: The researchers. That’s how they can stay up as long as needed to finish that grant application.
mrmoshpotato
@CapnMubbers: Reading through, it didn’t dawn on me that Paradise, CA was your town. Sorry for the loss, and best wishes going forward.
mrmoshpotato
@Yarrow: Yarrow from not left, not right, not center! What is that part of the outfield called?
Luciamia
The look of bliss on that baby bats face. Funny how their wings look like autumn leaves.
