Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We survived Breitbartpocalypse!

… makes me wish i had hoarded more linguine

Dinky Hocker shoots smack!

The revolution will be supervised.

Women: they get shit done

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

What fresh hell is this?

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Historically it is a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

We can agree to disagree, but i’m right.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

I’m going back to the respite thread.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Shocking, but not surprising

We have all the best words.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

It’s not even safe to go out and pick up 2 days worth of poop anymore.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Militantly superior in their own minds…

I am really enjoying these belly scritchees and my ladybug pacifier!

View this post on Instagram

FLASHBACK to Capella enjoying a morning tickle. In the wild, their mothers groom them throughout the day to keep them clean and prevent bacterial growth known as 'slimey wing'. In care, we only bath (wipe them down) our flying fox orphans once a day as we don't want to strip away their natural oils etc. After their bath, they love a good tickle to mimic their mothers tongue, and then they are sunned to dry out and get their much needed vitamin D. *bats are not pets* – I am a licensed and vaccinated wildlife rescuer and rehabilitator. If you see a sick or injured bat, do not touch it. Call your nearest wildlife rescue group. No touch, no risk. #capellatheflyingfox #blackflyingfox #vaccinatedandlicencedcarer #batsqld #flyingfox #fruitbat #babybat #bat #wildliferescue #batsofaustralia #australianwildlife #batsofinstagram #batsarenotpets #pleasedonottouchbats #notouchnorisk #rehabilitateandrelease #secondchance #australia #queensland #battyburrito #threatenedspecies #protectedspecies

It’s fascinating to see the extent to which DNA is changing our understanding of the other animals. It was assumed for a long time that bats must be closely related to rodents, but it’s more like whales:

    August 28, 2019 at 2:14 am

@Omnes Omnibus: Wouldn’t a dog napping on the treadmill end up getting dumped off the back end of the treadmill? I think one foot dog may be more efficient. It could take more energy to get tossed off the end of the treadmill while asleep, awake with a start, and have to get up and get back on than it does to stand there and disinterestedly move one leg.

@mrmoshpotato My reply to your large lemon/tiny grapefruit question disappeared to wherever comments go. I usually read long-dead threads so that was doubly annoying.
Late frost caused the fruit to fall when it was lemon-sized, in 1984 and a number of years after. Winters grew gradually warmer, so for maybe the last 8-10 years they grew into full-sized pink grapefruit. Probably grown from a previous owner’s compost heap or maybe planted, these were not the sweet ruby red type, they had quite a tang, but I liked them. Gone with the Paradise fire, along with the persimmon, pear, peaches, pomegranates, red and prune plums, apple, fig, almond, walnut, and two kinds of cherries. The kiwis had died out of old age, and deer ate the red and the green grapes down to nubs so long that they died also.
