NEW from San Francisco: I was surprised how much concern I heard about the prospect of a contested convention at the DNC Summer Meeting so I wrote about it. https://t.co/YCBlymqPGe
— Alex Seitz-Wald (@aseitzwald) August 25, 2019
Bernie-sympathetic media figure speaks to Sanders supporters, hears what he wants to hear…
Longtime DNC member Jim Zogby: “Unless something cataclysmic happens, I think we're looking at a contested convention…I think we're not going to get to the convention with an outright winner." https://t.co/YCBlymqPGe
— Alex Seitz-Wald (@aseitzwald) August 25, 2019
… All the top campaigns are taking the possibility of a contested convention seriously and have begun wooing the party’s 700-plus super delegates, who thanks to a new rule will only get to weigh in on a nominee if next year’s primaries and caucuses fail to produce a clear winner.
On the sidelines of the DNC meeting, senior campaign aides charged with hunting for delegates could be seen stalking the halls and schmoozing with super delegates into the wee hours of the mornings, keeping close track of lists of people they wanted to connect with in person. Behind the scenes, candidates have been making calls to super delegates for months and took time at the meeting to make the rounds to gatherings of delegates…
The last time Democrats went into their convention without a presumptive nominee already having a majority of delegates was 1984. And you have to go all the way back to 1952 to find the last time it took multiple rounds of ballots to pick the standardbearer.
But this time, it might happen again, according to many of the nearly two dozen state party chairs, DNC members, campaign delegate counters and other officials surveyed here by NBC News, most of whom did not want to speak for the record about the sensitive subject…
While Republican primaries are winner-take-all, Democrats’ are not. Any candidate who gets at least 15 percent of the vote can earn delegates from a primary or caucus, so its not uncommon for candidates to split each state’s delegate haul.
Some worry that the first four states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina) will deliver a split decision, and California and other Super Tuesday states will fracture, giving multiple candidates a reason to stay in the contest and the money to do so, thanks to energized grassroots donors…
BREAKING NEWS: Professionals prepare for possible outcomes, no matter how slim the chances.
The actual “news” here, IMO, is that Bernie Sanders will once again hang on until & after the convention, even after it’s mathematically impossible for him to win, even if that means guaranteeing a Repub win. Or, if you prefer to be as kind as possible, Sanders’ staff and supporters intend to keep Bernie in the race until & after the convention, because that’s where their checks & egoboo are. This is my (not hardly) shocked face, people.
I think that superdelegates ending up deciding our nominee despite the rule change would be sweet schedenfreude.
I never called for that stupid rule change.
— Jay Robertson (@IJefTomI) August 25, 2019
They're a handy punching bag when you're railing against 'the establishment' but Bernie has always relied on undemocratic measures to win, from caucuses to trying to trick opposing delegates into not showing up. Bernie ASKED the superdelegates in 2016 to overturn the popular vote

I didn’t like Wilmer after his sand his surrogates’ behavior in 2016, but my feelings on them now is approaching a searing disgust. It’s like they’re trying to do to the party what Nixon and his ilk did to the country, split it in half and claim to represent the bigger half.
They’re too stupid to see that half the country isn’t buying what they’re selling. Half the party isn’t either.

Between the racist asshole dogging me on facebook claiming that “blacks are the most privileged group in the united states” to hearing about Conservatives deciding to smear journalists who aren’t friendly to Trump, to my account at online store getting hacked (didn’t purchase anything or get CC info, but COULD have gotten my name, address, birthday and phone number) this day is just the fucking pits.
Well, that AND discovering my daughter had a fever right after telling her we could go to the bakery, triggering a massive melt-down when we decided we couldn’t go. Just lovely.
Wait, I DO have something to say that’s on topic: If Sander’s sticks around until the convention despite being 3rd or 4th place, he can go fuck himself. ETA: I should be clear that this applies to any candidate. If Sanders did it and was wooing superdelegates he gets an extra share of scorn for the hypocrisy and not learning from 2016, but any candidate who didn’t learn that lesson needs to get themselves out of the race right now.

I liked the message Perez and his team was trying to send (we can win in lots of places if we have the funding and commit to the progressive message we had in 2018). My first question: 1: is it worth it to become a member? I don’t want to get tons of junk mail from them or anybody else. 2: My father and I share the same name except for our middle names. If I were a top campaign aide, I’d definitely have somebody in a room thinking about contingency plans for a brokered convention, and of course every single candidate should be chatting up superdelegates as part of that contingency planning.
BUT anyone who thinks a brokered convention is probable hasn’t studied the math of delegate allocation and/or doesn’t understand what happens to the contribution stream once a candidate starts ranking up 4ths and even 3rds in primaries and caucuses. If the national polls today accurately predicted Iowa, only Biden, Sanders, and Warren would get delegates, and Biden would get nearly half of them.

@Spanky: One thing Trump knows how to do is make a damn fool of himself in front of everyone except his bigot MAGA dupes. Someone must have explained to him that even as Powell decided to do a rate cut, Powell added that the Fed wasn’t going to act like Donald Trump’s reincarnated daddy and bail him out for every dumb ass stunt he pulled. Even worse, Powell said the Fed and other central banks not only shouldn’t but couldn’t. So, Trump goes apeshit on his own appointee Powell, even as Powell does what Trump said he wanted. Citing facts to Trump is adding injury to insult.
Then Trump reveals himself to be a crummy two-bit conperson by going along with whatever the room wants, and suggests he has second thoughts about his trade war. Even mumble mouth fellow conperson and fool Boris Johnson knows more about the world than Trump and suggested, in humiliating mealy mouth fashion that near random battles in a tariff war, decided by pique and whim, was a not a good idea. And all the beta Eurocrat losers agreed. So, Trump has to cater to them weakly. Now we have to listen to Trump’s stooges try to explain Trump meant the opposite of what he said.
But, in the end, that is a good day at the G7, since it’s better that Trump enmesh himself in stupid reality TV BS fake drama than do worse damage on other fronts.
Edit: in the past, I’ve referred to Trump administration officials as henchmen, and flunkies. But now, seems like ‘stooges’ is the only appropriate word. Just a heads up on developments in Trump World nomenclature.

OK, here it is. I miss remembered slightly. It was an apparently fairly liberal college student, who was hungover, but made a last minute decision to go see what the crumb bum was up to. Some amusing stuff in the interview. Like what she did when Steve King walked to greet her (which I guess was ‘nice’ of King, since she said she thought she was the only constituent who was not paid to be there).
INTERVIEW: THE ONLY PERSON WHO ATTENDED STEVE KING’S FORUM
https://iowastartingline.com/2019/08/18/interview-the-only-person-who-attended-steve-kings-forum/
“It was early Saturday morning, and Jessica Birch didn’t feel like getting out of bed. Hungover and tired, the 21-year-old University of Northern Iowa student could easily have turned off her alarm.
But the night before, she saw a Facebook event for Congressman Steve King’s town hall forum in Grundy County come across her feed, and she felt a civic duty to attend. So, Birch forced herself out of bed and headed 17 miles down the road to the Grundy Center Community Center.
She arrived to peculiar scene: out of the over 12,000 people that live in Grundy County, Birch was the only one to show up to King’s forum.
“It was just odd, because I don’t know what the record was for the world’s smallest town hall is, but one person I think has to be it,” Birch told Starting Line in an interview this morning.
A photo of the near-empty room by a Reuters photographer quickly went viral Saturday afternoon, showing only two people in a room of mostly-empty chairs. However, as Birch explained, the other woman on the left in the photo was an intern for King. Birch, who lives in Dike, Iowa, was the only constituent of King’s not required to attend to show up.
“I was the only person who was not paid to be there,” she said.”
I liked this bit:
‘Birch had planned on just sitting in the back of the room. When King entered, he walked back to her to greet her, then she moved herself up to a closer row as he approached the podium.
“It was very awkward, it was a very weird thing,” Birch explained. “Part of me wanted to leave, but it would be rude to leave, and the Midwestern part of me couldn’t do that. I feel bad for him a bit. But then part of me was really, really angry because other Democrats didn’t show up. I kind of let stuff he said slide, on stuff like abortion and health care, because I don’t want to get in an argument with him. I already know you’re wrong. Let’s talk about things I actually care about.” ‘

@Jay: YES! Heard that on the radio and did a little happy dance. The blowback must have been fierce.
jl
@Jay: Yes, Thanks for the link. I had to go look to make sure I wasn’t citing an Onion piece. I was all true!

@jl: If Feenstra wins the primary this gets a lot tougher for Scholten. It depends on how deep the prion disease has affected the populace by November 2020. Hopefully by then Dolt45 is so toxic that Republicans struggle everywhere. I can hope at least.

@Uncle Cosmo: I like “Uncle Waggly”, myself, but I am so old I actually get the reference.

@Steve in the ATL: Been away; hair or not, I don’t have that power. SAD

@David Koch: Thanks! L of A on a big screen is amazing. I think I saw it at the Charles; it was on a very wide screen and the desert scenes were vast.
chris
@Jay: Meant to add there was one in Halifax too.

Rats, I was hoping it was the final scene in Dr. Strangelove.
Jay
@chris:
Yeah, there was one here as well, on the reserve, the Sewtewemuk people torched it.

@Jay:
What’s the law on this? Can the Garner family sue for the proceeds?

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
Not among your age cohort, but for some of us his being in Star Wars is way, way down on the list of things we might bring up or think about when mentioning Sir Alec, at best a minor performance from a major talent.
As for Lawrence of Arabia, decidedly not a fan. David Lean never met a foot of film he couldn’t shoehorn in somewhere.

@David Koch:
That’s how I saw it. The framing alone is awesome.

@NotMax:
Does keep it from getting lost that way.

@West of the Rockies: Tomorrow night: My Neighbor Totoro (subtitled, not dubbed). I never tire of this film.

My kid smashed the everloving fuck out of her iphone; it’s shedding glass powder.

2016 destroyed the myth that American voters are smart, wise, or good.

@burnspbesq: Aaarrrgggh, did not know that. The only theaters here that show the Met Opera transmissions, and also the Studio Ghibli festivals every year. What a dilemma!

@Honus:
I have to confess, I had not heard of “Steve Blass disease.” I certainly remember Blass, but I’m a Mets guy, so didn’t follow the Pirates much.
Thanks for edumacating me.
burnspbesq
@CapnMubbers:
If you forego all of the Met telecasts, you’ll come within a couple hundred bucks of saving enough to fly to NY once a season for a performance.
There is NOTHING like an actual live performance at the Met.
trollhattan
@Jay:
“Accident.” Not a rageaholic so I’m guessing dropped from a significant height or ran it the hell over. Have never seen a screen so borked. The pieces have sub pieces that lord over the smaller pieces.

@burnspbesq:
I’m almost there . . . almost.

@James E Powell: I was talking Democratic voters only.

@trollhattan:
Accidentally, or in a moment of anger?

@Spanky:
I love that so much. DougJ front-paged it once.
CapnMubbers
@burnspbesq: Something I have yet to experience. One live Met performance a season would certainly be more memorable than a season of supporting a Trump-donating CEO, though I do enjoy the behind-the-scenes action during intermission.

Brief Encounter is good.
Gin & Tonic
@burnspbesq: I’ve been to both, and maybe I’m old, but the idea that I can drive 18 miles as opposed to 180, can park for free, and can actually see the faces of the singers, really puts a heavy thumb on the scale.
Jay
@trollhattan:
So, slip and fall.
Last Iphone had some chips. They are not as tough as you think they are.
Steve in the ATL
@trollhattan: friend of mine got frustrated when his daughter wouldn’t put down her iPhone, so he grabbed it out of her hands, put it on a table, and smashed it with a hammer. In totally unrelated news, he’s no longer married and doesn’t have custody of his kids.
So keep a close eye on this kid of yours.

@NotMax:
Lawrence of Arabia was made when white movie producers saw nothing wrong with casting white actors as nonwhite characters — Guinness played a real-life Arab prince in that movie. Still not as bad as A Passage To India, also directed by Lean, where he wore brownface makeup to play an Indian character.
zhena gogolia
@burnspbesq:
I don’t know. When you save up all year to do it and the performance is mediocre, you feel pretty stupid.
In my experience, Magic Flute, Pelléas et Mélisande, and Peter Grimes were all meh.
Somehow I’m never there for Hvorostovsky and Fleming in Eugene Onegin.

Oh yes, now you remind me of the standing-room Boris Godunov when I was in grad school. I guess Martti Talvela was good but he looked like a bug from where I was.

@Amir Khalid: IIRC, none of the different Charlie Chans was played by an Asian, although the variously numbered sons were. Which is not only racist, but kind of insane.
AnotherBruce
@MomSense: Oh fuck the bad timeline. I’m sick of peeples whining about the goddamn timeline. Go fuck yourself with Idi Amin, take a sample of the Cuban missile crisis, and a dollop of Holocaust. Shit, we are definitely in the area of first world problems. It’s just that we do not have urgency, We better get it damn quick.
Brachiator
@Cameron:
Neither Charlie Chan or Mr Moto, another Asian movie detective, were played by Asian actors. Mr Moto was played by Peter Lorre.
NotMax
@Brachiator
And Mr. Wong in the flickers by Boris Karloff (replaced by Keye Luke in the 6th and final movie of the series).
(We shall not speak of Katherine Hepburn in <em.Dragon Seed nor of John Wayne in The Conqueror.)
Villago Delenda Est
@NotMax:
Producer: Sounds good. After all, it’s a western set in Asia.
SFAW
@Anotherlurker:
I played it for Mrs. SFAW (born in Maine) this weekend. She had never heard it before. She thought that all these years I had been saying it, it was something I thought up maybe, or picked it up from my grandparents, or who knows what.
He died too damn young.

Yeah, I guess he might have been. My recording of Zauberflote has him as Sarastro. Pretty good.

Does anybody remember the film of The Good Earth, based on Pearl S. Buck’s novel about a Chinese family in China? The six biggest roles were all given to white actors for commercial reasons, against Buck’s wishes.
Brachiator
@NotMax:
Karloff played Fu Manchu in the 1932 film The Mask of Fun Manchu. Myrna Loy played his daughter. For a while, Lot was typecast as a scheming Eurasian temptress.
Brachiator
@Amir Khalid:
The Good Earth started Paul Muni and Luise Rainer. Rainer won the Best Actress Oscar for the film. Some background:

I haven’t seen that word used in a very long time. Amazingly enough, I was quite happy not having seen it. [Not slamming you, Brachiator. I’m just appalled at some of the shit that used to be done to protect the purity of the white wimmins.]
Amir Khalid
@SFAW:
I’m pretty sure there were people who used that word in the past decade when speaking of Barack Obama.
SFAW
@Amir Khalid:
Would not
surpriseamaze me. Fortunately, I had not witnessed that.Overturning Loving is probably on SCOTUS’s agenda, the only question is: before or after Griswold?
[You’re probably aware of/familiar with those two, but in case your not: Loving made it legal for whites and non-whites to marry, Griswold allows (among other things) women to get/use birth control without government interference.]
Citizen Alan
@AnotherBruce:
Your complaint ignores the fact that all three of those things would have been made worse by orders of magnitude if Shitgibbon or someone like him had been President at the time.
Citizen Alan
@NotMax:
To be honest, I’m kinda glad John Wayne was the one to play Genghis Khan. No Asian actor of that era deserved such indignity.

Go Bernie. I just love the not so fine whines that BSDS elicits from the former Wilma Clinton supporters.
