Oh, we intend to place him in a loving home! As much as the publicity is wonderful for bringing attention to the Refuge and all our adoptable pets (like Pandora, who’s been waiting for 226 days to get adopted! ??), what really matters is what’s best for him! pic.twitter.com/YrBdRC0SUu

@JPL: I’m not a big fan of fast food chicken (mainly because it’s always fried)(may also be a hangover from my childhood of having to eat and then later refusing to eat the vile stuff that comes out of KFC), but I have had a Popeye’s chicken meal at some point in my past and found that it was pretty good. There are no Popeye’s out here and my chances of getting one in STL are pretty near zero. Of all the great food choices available to me at the first grumblings of hunger when I am up there, I just don’t see me picking a franchise chain fast food joint.

@OzarkHillbilly: Pretty crazy to see that sandwich selling out. It’s been available at the Popeye’s by my office for at least 2 months. I eat that sandwich at least twice a week…first time I had it, I immediately proclaimed it better than Chick-Fil-A (which I do like a lot, but you have to ask for the sauce, and they’re not open on Sunday) It’s only been in the last few days where the drive-thru has gotten really bad, though.

Well, this should make the G7 a lot of fun.

I kept quiet so as not to curse myself and the wait was stressful. The job that I interviewed for a few weeks ago and really liked, next day they said to expect an offer – it took a bit to get through the HR process. I started and survived the first week. Still so much to learn, but it is great so far!
OzarkHillbilly
@Immanentize: I’ve had a few encounters with both blues and reds. They can be very sweet dogs, but the herding instinct is so strong, and one of their techniques is to nip at the “heels” of whatever animal they are trying to push. They are also very reactive to anything or anyone “unknown” and that very much includes any surprises.

I’ve been very frustrated trying to slim down our kitty I call Miss Chunky who gets strict amount of chow twice a day since we adopted a growing kitten in June who gets fed whenever he wants to eat. At least she is definitely not a Chonk, just a few lbs over her ideal weight. We can’t leave the kitchen until kitten has his fill or Miss Chunky will sneak over and devour kitten’s food as fast as possible. Admittedly we both have a tendency to remember things we have to do and walk off forgetting to stand guard so it’s been slow progress training ourselves to be more vigilant.

He’s only read the first sentence and he can’t be expected to remember any of his past actions. //
OzarkHillbilly
@germy: There have to be a thousand names that would fit the descriptor of “modern people who have done the most damage to America:” better than Thomas. Thomas is by no means a force for good, but Dick Cheney did more damage to this country in 8 years of sitting in a “warm bucket of piss” than Thomas has done in 28 yrs on the SC, especially when one considers they could have found an Oval Office door stop that would vote the way Thomas did while displaying as much intellectual rigor.

@germy: How is Robert Mercer not on that list? He’s been flying under the radar for a long time. People know of him but don’t really understand how damaging he’s been. The whole family, actually.

Matt McIrvin
@debbie: I’m not going to believe anything is actually happening to Trump’s presidency until I see Trump’s approval poll numbers move outside the narrow band where they’ve been stuck basically since the beginning of 2018 (or, better yet, the only slightly wider band where they’ve been stuck since his first couple of months in office). It’s basically been the same story: Trump is unpopular, more consistently unpopular than any President of modern times, but nevertheless not so unpopular that we can’t imagine him being reelected with enough dirty tricks and memetic pollution. (He was slightly more unpopular when he won in 2016.) He’s never gotten into second-term George W. Bush territory, and because of his special cultic appeal I doubt he will.
Yarrow

Up to the second he wrote that, he trusted them implicitly. Yup, fer sure.
Yarrow
@trollhattan: I think it’s part of his directive to his followers. Just like labeling the press “fake news” he instructs people not to trust them. It’s a propaganda technique that works. Repeat a lie often enough and people believe it. This sort of thing is very dangerous for our democracy in ways we haven’t even really explored all that much yet.

@debbie: Trump’s not wrong that there is a law that gives him the power — on however flimsy “national security” pretexts — to regulate trade. What this shows, however, is that Congress could revoke that (now much abused) power in about two seconds if it felt like it and place trade policy back in the hands of an elected deliberative body, rather than leaving it up to the whims of a petulant idiot manchild. Not that I mind leaving Trump to be hoist by his own petard in this trade war, but it would also be nice to see Congress claw back some of the authority it’s pissed away to the Executive Branch over the decades in order to avoid making difficult decisions.
Frankensteinbeck
@Yarrow:
Unfortunately, like Trump himself, it’s only a natural progression of an existing problem. For decades, Republicans at the elected and voter level have operated on lies, dismissed even obvious truths they didn’t want to hear, sought out alternative news sources that would tell them the lies they already agreed with, and increasingly hated and defied the concept of empirical or scientific fact. It is a very dangerous trend that keeps getting worse, and Trump is part of its self-reinforcement.
Yarrow
@germy: By “followers” I didn’t just mean Twitter followers. The President’s tweets get amplified well beyond Twitter. They’re shown on news programs and not just cable news. They’re referenced in articles. They’ll be shown on the Sunday shows tomorrow. His tweets have reach and impact well beyond Twitter. His followers (you know, like cult followers) will see it as a directive.
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Yarrow: Trump says so many ridiculous things that there’s no way to tell if he’s joking. It all sounds like it came from The Onion.
Yarrow
@Frankensteinbeck: It is and Trump is the logical conclusion many of us could see coming decades ago. The current TrumpRepublican party is a party of the ultra rich making money off people who refuse to believe experts in any field. And it’s a home for white supremacists and extremists of all kinds. It’s a cult for the most part.
Yarrow
Saw this over on Molly Jong Fast’s twitter feed:
I understand that Rachel Bitecofer is the polling data wonk of the moment. I don’t know more about her than that. I have said similar things about Dem messaging here so I’m inclined to agree with her on that point.
Baud
@Yarrow:
I agree too, but it’s harder to find a common set of emotions when you have a diverse coalition.
Amir Khalid
I think I’ve met human kindergartners who weren’t as big as the Chonkster.
Matt McIrvin
@Yarrow: The problem is that the emotions that work are… evil emotions. We know how to win elections: it’s to be racist and hateful and get people worked up to kill other people. The Democratic Party used to be fueled by that, to some extent. It abandoned that faction on purpose and has been paying the price ever since, but it was necessary.
Frankensteinbeck
@Baud:
Also when you care about whether you’re telling the truth.
Matt McIrvin
…and when we do try to tap into emotions that aren’t evil, we get knocked for being crazy, hysterical Debbie Downers.
debbie
@Yarrow:
Just found and watched the clip. Not the least hint of a smile.
debbie
@jonas:
It doesn’t give him the power to do the kind of shit he’s threatening to do.
Yarrow
@Baud: Obama did it with “Hope and Change.” It was aspirational, hopeful, spoke to a better way. I think people who understand that stuff can come up with something that would work for this cycle.
@Matt McIrvin: I think fear works well. Right now the Dems have a gigantic gift in that people are scared of what Trump will do. The election should be about getting rid of Trump. All policy discussions should be centered around what Trump has done that has made everything worse and what he hasn’t done that he either said he would do or should have done.
The details are interesting but getting even one thing passed will depend on having the right people in Congress. To do that we have to get people to vote. To do that we heave to appeal to their emotions.
James E Powell

In the English Premier League’s surprise result of the weekend so far, Manchester United have lost 1-2 at home to Crystal Palace. United were 4th before this weekend’s matches and Palace were 16th. Still to come today: Liverpool vs Arsenal in the 5:30pm kickoff. Liverpool won this fixture 5-1 last season.
Marcopolo
@Yarrow: I realize I am biased as one of her supporters, but I actually think that is part of what is behind Warren catching on with folks. Buried in all of her “I have a plan for that” talk there is a deep emotional hook about social & economic fairness, about how we all experience the same problems, about our expectations of how our society should work/how our government should work. Her story about her mom having to go back to work after her dad’s heart attack in order to save the house/save the family is part of that narrative. And she is really good at communicating that with her audience.
Frankensteinbeck
@Yarrow:
The 2018 election suggests that voters want to hear about health care, and will provide their fear and hate of Trump by themselves.
James E Powell
@Frankensteinbeck:
Agree completely. And Trump is an intensifier who has turned the whole thing into a cult. For a while we laughed and talked about the 27%. That might still be the right number for the truly crazy. But, to our horror, we’ve learned that for Americans who will always vote to defend their white supremacist paranoia, hatred, and bigotry, the number is somewhere between 40 and 42%.
How do you see this ending up? I don’t foresee the RWers having any Road to Damascus moments.
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Marcopolo: Warren is comforting. It feels like she knows what to do. Obama had that too. Remember “I got this”?

@James E Powell: Pyden, who made that statement, seemed to be shocked by Cramer’s racist comments. Pyden was on the side of Hayman, whose father is Syrian, and who felt (and rightly so) personally insulted. Cramer is a monster.

Yarrow
@Frankensteinbeck: This time around we have to focus on the electoral college votes we need, which means certain states like WI and MI and so forth. Whatever works for the voters we need in those states is what we need to do. The “get rid of Trump” message seems to work best with those voters, from what I’ve read.

I don’t mean this to be an argument between us. Maybe we just get different impressions from the same material. Here is the whole quote:
According to the town’s wikipedia entry, Marysville is 97.5% white. Pyden doesn’t have any idea how it got that way and doesn’t see how the city could do anything to make it different. Sounds like the usual “What? Us racist?!? How can you say such a thing?” As if 97.5% white towns are not built and populated by people who very much want it that way. And non-whites, well they just choose to live elsewhere, you know, with their own kind. At best, he is an enabler of the Cramers and the town’s citizens who agree with Cramer but know not to say it out loud.

California. What people forget is the two decades of crisis between the California right wing going batshit racist and the demographic timer ticking far enough along to stop them from having the power to destroy. I fear we have at least another decade of McConnell style madness before the balance tips. That’s very hard to estimate. For one thing, there is no precedent for how pissed liberal voters are. Will that outlast Trump? Who knows? The population is gradually shifting, but engagement of our side on the level their side relies on could shift things much faster.

@J R in WV: Actually, Chick-fil-A is not at all bad. It consistently ranks at the top of teen’s preferred fast food franchises. Their customer service, whereever I’ve been, is undoubtedly at the top of the heap. Their method/manner of pretheirparing their fried chicken results in a distinctive taste that cannot be confused with any other similar.
While I’m no fan of the politics of the owner/owners, it is still a privately held family business and they can engage if they wish (personally, I do try to frequent businesses that don’t wear their politics on their sleeve) and much prefer the era when not espousing one’s political leanings was more the norm. @Frankensteinbeck: The thing about demographic trends is that they can be changed. We laugh about how the Republicans can’t stop the tide of the browning of America, but they really could–it would just take genocide on an unimagined scale. The entire country awash in blood, bodies piled on every streetcorner. It’s possible. Hitler really did manage to kill nearly all of the Jews in Europe. I remember the time Theodore “Vox Day” Beale used Hitler as a positive example when talking about how mass deportation is practically possible–if Hitler could do it we can too! That was before Trump.
They could kill every black and brown person if they really wanted to, or at least enough to keep the US white-majority; it would just take every Republican turning into an enthusiastic piece of the killing industry. And they’re working on it, bit by bit, getting people used to such ideas.
I worry that there’s no way out of it without us becoming monsters too. It isn’t any future I want to build.
