What a beautiful woman, and what a noble animal.
Happy Saturday, jackals.

That’s a great story. Thanks for sharing it.

What a wonderful story and I hope the dogs continue to provide strength and courage.

Wow. Those faces–the people and the dogs–really say it all.

Kid’s off taking the SAT a second time. “1500 or bust.” We’ll see about that, but now maybe she’ll be able to enjoy the scant few days before school begins.
I’m doing laundry. Yay me.

Dogs are angels with fur, yes. Actual, real angels, not imaginary, non-existent ones invented in our myths.
Half of us, at least, are devils, though; nearly-hairless devils who create sickeningly evil shit like child soldiers. In my 7th decade now, and I’ve come to believe the human race is just that monstrous. The other half are made of some angels (as this heartbreaking video demonstrates) but mostly those who are in that ambiguous and compromised moral middle who mainly just want to muddle through this curious life (I flatter myself that that’s the territory I inhabit, since I know I’m no angel). This is why, for instance, taking the fascist road is so easily done, and resisting that the far more difficult route.
I’m happy to see the love shown in this video — thanks so much for sharing it — while I remain all too aware of the abject horrors that made such a project necessary (a project that makes my own small bit of volunteering for the local animal shelter seem the slightest and most minimal thing, and I suppose that it is).

Get back to me after you’ve been mauled by a St. Bernard.

What a wonderful program. It brought me to tears. I lived and worked in Uganda and the unaddressed trauma there is unimaginable and widespread. Rwanda has actually done a better job of addressing trauma. I’m happy to see that there are efforts to make mental healthcare accessible and respectable in Uganda. It’s so badly needed, and it’s lovely to see the dogs as beloved change agents.

That’s a beautiful story. Our attitude in the U.S. toward mental illness and trauma and getting help for it isn’t too different from theirs. I’m happy to see it changing there and I hope it will change more here too.

(open rant)
This is fast becoming most tiresome.
Today is the sixth day in a row in which the phone rings once and then goes silent again sometime between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m.

@NotMax: If your phone allows number blocking, it may mean that you have it on the block list.

Nope, not an option I have. The ring isn’t the crux of the annoyance, it’s the time of day.

@NotMax: I have nomorobo activated on my phone and that’s what it does when a spam call is received.

Back from the vet with our remaining furry critter. Oscar kitteh got in a cat fight two weeks ago and the bite wound that seemed healed abscessed. He seemed fine except for an asymmetrical face. After his trip to the vet he sprawled on the floor imploringly and purred like crazy once I picked him up. He bathed like mad to wash off the vet odors. Now he’s sleeping just a foot away. This is a former feral cat who was the toughest guy. It’s like he’s getting to live his kitten years being dependent and feeling safe. It’s much like LGBT people of my generation who didn’t get to have their teenage years and only got to experience socializing 101 in their twenties or thirties. There’s a sense of that I niticed about this Ugandan woman who missed her teenage years. Her dog lets her be as immature as she needs to be so she can be awkward and experiment with a companion who doesn’t judge. It reminds me that Trump has never had a pet.

Aware of that but not a service I have chosen to implement. Could easily ignore the ring if it was, say, after 10 in the morning instead of my being from the embrace of Morpheus untimely ripped.

@NotMax: A local company did this to me a few times some years back, when one could still get real help from something called Directory Assistance. This was particularly urgent as the call, every day, was a fax failure, with that distinctive horror of a whine, and the directory assistance person was most obliging in directing me to the voice number. Next day, immediately after the fax fail, I called the voice number, and proceeded to Rip Them A New One. No further disturbances afterward. Caller ID might help in this matter, might not. But oh the pleasure of Ripping Them A New One. Finest Kind.

@Repatriated: Cujo was one of the most difficult books I ever read. I still haven’t watched the movie.
