I really hate to concentrate on Trump, but let’s just tally up his day yesterday.
In Dayton, no press were allowed in the hospital, but that didn’t stop the Trumpers from creating a campaign ad style video that the stablest genius tweeted out today. He also lied about Sherrod Brown and Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley’s comments on his visit to the hospital (he said they criticized him, when they actually said it was nice that he had comforted victims).
When Trump went to El Paso yesterday, none of the victims who were still hospitalized met with him, and when he met the staff, this happened:
Meeting the medical staff at an El Paso hospital yesterday, Trump started talking about…crowd sizes. As dishonestly as usual.
He wildly inflated the size of his rally in the city six months ago, wildly deflated the size of Beto O’Rourke’s crowd at a competing event. https://t.co/mNP2rst4fP

This guy just keeps getting worse.
MattF
The D politicians failed to address him as ‘Sir’.
Amir Khalid
@MattF:
Alas, they have too much decorum to call him a preening asshole.
Litlebritdifrnt
Did anyone point out to him that his campaign still owes El Paso $586K for his rally.
MattF
Also, RW slapfight! Marc Thiessen (in the WaPo) says Dayton shooter was left-wing and El Paso shooter was right-wing, so it all evens out. Bret Stephens (in the NYT) says that’s nonsense. No links.
Amir Khalid
@Litlebritdifrnt:
If he wasn’t seen throwing a tantrum about it, then I guess not.
Felanius Kootea
@Litlebritdifrnt: I was wondering that as well. He’s at a hospital with 8 shooting victims who refused to meet with him talking about crowd size and how small Beto’s rally was in comparison. Talk about a malignant, narcissistic sociopath.
I hope they keep that hospital staff member with the Trump socks away from the victims. Disgusting.
J R in WV
Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, who seems like a smart and attractive person, said she was confused by Trump’s press conference remarks and tweets, after she and Sherrod Brown told the press that the victims and first responders were comforted by Trump’s visit.
What, she doesn’t know that Trump lies about everything?
hueyplong
She had learned the valuable lesson that treating the monster with decency does no good.
chris
Big beautiful wall. Gets a little higher and longer every day.

Um…
Why was the only picture of him at the hospital in Dayton was WITH A CHILD?
WHAT would a CHILD be doing in a NIGHTCLUB DISTRICT AT ONE IN THE MORNING?
Just asking.

O’Rourke: Trump language is giving license to act on racism
Beto O’Rourke, former congressman and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, talks with Rachel Maddow from El Paso, Texas about holding Donald Trump responsible for his divisive and dehumanizing language, and calling for unity among Americans in the face of violent racist terrorism.

Trump visits to gun massacre sites met with protests
Rachel Maddow looks at the less-than-welcoming reception Donald Trump received from the Dayton and El Paso communities when he arrived to visit first hospitals responders in the wake of deadly gun attacks.

Divisive Trump presence disrupts Dayton community’s healing unity
Mayor Nan Whaley of Dayton, Ohio, talks with Rachel Maddow about how the divisive presence of Donald Trump ruptured the unity of the Dayton community still healing from a deadly mass shooting, and how public pressure for gun reform has been received by Republican politicians previously disinclined to consider it.

Booker, Biden rail against racism and Trump rhetoric
Rachel Maddow shares highlights from speeches by Senator Cory Booker and former Vice President Joe Biden, 2020 Democratic candidates for president, in which they criticism how Donald Trump’s rhetoric has helped fuel a resurgence of racism in the United States.

I’m visualizing victims in leg casts literally hobbling at top speed the other way when Trump arrives. I may have watched more Benny Hill than absolutely necessary to sustain life.

McGahn makes dubious confidentiality claim to avoid testifying
Rachel Maddow reports on former White House counsel Don McGhan’s claim that he cannot testify before Congress because he is obligated by client confidentiality to Donald Trump, even though he was not Donald Trump’s personal lawyer.

And, this Twitter Thread was so powerful…about how Ms.Morrison’s words changed this one life:
Cheryl Rofer
I think there were two campaign-style videos out of yesterday, but I don’t have the stomach to look for them. The music on one made me think it was going to burst into “Ride of the Valkyries” at any moment. Lots of Trumpian thumbs-upping.
No press in the hospital leads to the question of how staged those photos were.
Amir Khalid
@Cheryl Rofer:
Even I know not to evoke “Kill Da Wabbit” in a campaign video.
Keith P.
@Cheryl Rofer: yeah, that music was something else. You’d thing this was celebrating a space launch, not mourn a massacre

Am I wrong to be disappointed that Trump would not appreciate the deep historical irony of using Wagner for his campaign media?

It’s one thing to read about it, another thing altogether to be in the middle of it. Trump’s lies are reprehensible. But they’re like fuel to him.
Equally reprehensible is how Trump’s people understand that their job is to smear Democrats and anyone who doesn’t kiss his ass. And they certainly seem to love their jobs. Just a happy bunch of enablers, toadies and boot lickers.

The books that will be written on this administration when he is dead and gone are going to be “interesting.” They are going to sit next to books about kleptocracies in less developed countries. Catalogers looking at biographies on tRump will have to decide if they should go in biography area, books covering aging/dementia issues, or books covering those with mental illness. The future is going to wonder WTF was going on.

@rikyrah: That is so sad, and it’s how repression works insidiously.
I wanted to be a painter, even in high school, but never heard mention of any women artists outside of Georgia O’Keefe until maybe my 30’s. No Artemisia Gentileschi, no Angelica Kaufmann, Rachel Ruysch, Rosa Bonheur (although the Horse Fair is 16 feet long and resides in the Met, NYC). Women artists go back centuries but each one gets treated as a single aberration rather than a continuum.
So “If I’ve seen further it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants” does not apply to Blacks, to women.

@rikyrah: Sort of on topic: The first time I took my (Black) niece to the beach, we saw this Black woman surfer get out of the water and my niece said to me, “I didn’t know Black people were allowed to surf.” She was 13 years old at the time, and I was equally angry and in tears. I mean, sh*t, everything her parents and her family could do to show/tell her that she could do anything, and still she’d absorbed this idea that Black people “weren’t allowed.” JFC, thinking about it still makes me want to throw things and this happened 10+ years ago.

OK, we live in the woods, and have a 75 pound white lab mix. She is free to roam the forested hills, there are thousands of acres of vacant forest around our forested farm. As a result, she finds things in the deep woods.
Bad, terrible dead things, which she eats, being a Lab mix. Then she comes home, and doesn’t eat her kibble dinner, because she is so full of yuck! Lovable scamp, then she emits fumes, laying on the floor beneath my chair. OMG!!!
It is like have a lovable pet vulture, in some ways. Cuter, but nearly as smelly. You can hear this little hiss, like a chemical process leaking, and in a few seconds there’s this fume wafting.
TMI? Sorry, but thought sharing would make me feel better. Not yet, so far, but maybe later on? Dogs!
Sometimes the outdoor cat, who comes in for a drink, or dinner, catches a chipmunk, and then comes to the door to bring it in for a snack later on. Her “lemme in” cry becomes a little muffled because of the mouthful of furball — but sometimes I don’t notice the change in audio timbre and open the door, as I am basically a door opener for the pets, my position in life now.
So then I have to catch the cat. Sometimes she spits out the chipmunk when I grab her. Mostly the critter is stone dead, once it nearly escaped. But mostly I can use the cat as a picker-up device by holding her face to the chipmunk, so she will grab hold, and then I run for the door.
I have repeated this trick up to 3 times to get the cat + the chipmunk out the door.
Happy International Cat Day, all !!!

I think I should give a shout out to my New York public high school education (’79-’83) in Putnam County. We read African American authors as part of our curriculum. We often had to read another book outside of class. I remember reading Native Son for that reason. When I look back, I am always grateful for the wide-range of material my teachers exposed me to from short stories, to plays, to poems.
