As Donald Trump and his administration trek further into the moral abyss, expect more demonstrations. Participate, even.
The media are ignoring demonstrations – there was some local coverage of last Friday’s Lights for Liberty, but I don’t recall seeing anything national.
On Tuesday afternoon, a thousand protesters, led by Never Again Action, a Jewish group, blocked the entrances to ICE headquarters for several hours. That got some national coverage.
Today, Catholic groups are protesting immigration policy at the Capitol. I’ve seen nothing about this so far from news organizations, so here’s a particularly good Twitter thread. Also, the hashtag #CatholicDayofAction.
Starting now: Catholics are gathered on the Capital lawn to protest the Trump Administration’s immigration policies and to call on Congress to defund ICE, stop detaining children and reform immigration policies they’re calling “inhumane.” They’re calling this #catholicdayofaction pic.twitter.com/rKm5Rd3oEQ

The division between the hate-mongering ultra-conservative American Catholic Church leadership and a large portion of its worshipers that are more moderate or even liberal, not to mention the fairly liberal nuns, should be interesting. This issue involves oppression of a mostly-Catholic minority. Will the American bishops love their in-group or their cruelty more?
Courage is not the issue. Elected officials mostly reflect their voters. The Republicans in congress think concentration camps are a good thing and only extreme cowardice of a major threat to their jobs would make them oppose white supremacy in sufficient numbers to change anything. The vast majority will dig in their heels and defend what they believe – that the browning of America is the greatest threat to the country.

Trump’s incendiary rhetoric is much more shiny-object dramatic for the news media to cover than a bunch of protesters conducting a “passive resistance” sort of demonstration. It takes a massive turnout of the sort the Women’s march drew, complete with pink pussy hats to add to the drama, to get the media much interested.
AOC is getting coverage because she is extremely effective at dramatically presenting herself (and to a not inconsiderable extent, because she is a congressperson rather than just another citizen).

Turning our attention to less savory religious characters….
In today’s edition of “watching my rights being taken away in real-time,” the Christofascists are seeing Trump’s new “natural law” commission — created to re-evaluate the U.S.’s human rights policy — as “an extraordinary opening to push for clear and consistent recognition of the natural family” and “gives us a forum to challenge American foreign policy that has in the past advanced the extreme agenda of the left that has been cloaked in the language of so-called human rights.”
From Right Wing Watch via Joe.My.God:
Natural law theory has been used for a long time by Catholic Church leaders and theologians who reject LGBT people’s identities and their relationships. Natural law theory has various strains, but as applied to sexuality and gender, it essentially argues that people whose sexual expression or gender identity is not “natural,” or who have non-procreative sex, are defying the “natural law” of God.
All of the commission’s members are anti-LGBT activists. The commission, which was reportedly created without input from the State Department’s existing human rights infrastructure, is reportedly the brainchild of NOM founder Robert George, who, after the Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling, called for “all federal and state officeholders in the United States” to defy the decision.

So I say build the case in such a way that it puts both Trump and the GOP on display for what they are in the lead up to the 2020 election.

I have a question for you.
It hasn’t come up here much — perhaps because the majority (though by no means all) of the commenters here are in the “privileged” category — but outside the walls of this particular echo chamber there has been discussion of the fact that the cheerleaders of the “go slow” approach to impeachment are generally the folks who can AFFORD to wait for when — if ever — this monster and his sub-monsters are removed from power….aka privileged people in general, and straight white men, in particular….though there are plenty of women in that category. (I personally don’t know any people of color who are.)
Since you are one whose very life is under direct attack every minute trump remains in power…..without any ATTEMPT even being made to remove him — your opinion of the chosen course of the Democratic “leadership” is inherently entitled to respect. I see from that twitter thread that ICE is attempting to hold the children hostage in order to cause an undocumented parent to come for them, so they can arrest the parent. This is kidnapping, legally, and the Chicago child care authorities need to get an arrest warrant from a judge and arrest those who held those innocent (legally) children prisoners illegally.
I also think those concentration camps holding kids longer than 72 hours are nests of kidnapped children being abused, and state troopers with warrants need to take charge of those concentration camps, arrest the “agents” or private security guards, whatever they are holding children illegally, and free the children.
And I also mean those managing the programs feeding those privately operated “prisons”, the federal management employees, need to be arrested for child abuse and held for trial without bail.
Once some people are held without bail for child abuse, they will begin to have trouble recruiting sadists and pedophiles to run their concentration camps.
