Mnemosyne Muse emailed asking if I’d do an update with the details for tomorrow night’s meet up in Portland, OR. So here are the details she provided:
It looks like we’ll be meeting at 7 pm on Friday 6/14 at the Rookery Bar above Raven & Rose at 1331 S.W. Broadway. If someone local could volunteer to bring some green balloons, that’s always helpful in allowing the group to locate each other. I’ll be wearing my black “Hamilton” Los Angeles t-shirt since that usually makes me easy to identify.
Here’s a link to the Rookery Bar and the Raven & Rose Restaurant for those looking for further details.
Here’s what the t-shirt looks like:
As a teaser, for those of you in St. Louis, new home of Lord Stanley’s Cup – Mazel Tov! by the way – please save the date of 27 June 2019 as commenter OpieJeanie will be in town and wants to do a meet up there. I’ll do a dedicated post for this over the weekend, but here’s what she’s sent me. She’ll also be in KC on 23 June 2019, in case anyone there would also like a meet up. Here’s what she’s sent me so far
We are traveling on Sunday the 23rd to Kansas City and will be there until the next morning, when we head down to the Ozarks to visit cousins. We will be in St Louis on the 27th and wonder if jackals in either city would like to meet with us for supper.
So if you’re in KC and are interested in a meet up on the 23rd, or St. Louis and interested in one on the 27th, save the dates and look for a dedicated post on this over the weekend.

She should drop in on Ozark Hillbilly unannounced. Blech.
Mnemosyne
I am literally on the train to Portland right now. I just ordered a gin & ginger ale to go with my dinner. Food is included with a sleeper ticket, booze is not, but it’s not that expensive.
Quinerly
May be around on the 27th. What area of St. Louis were you thinking about?
Adam L Silverman
@Mnemosyne: We’ll both move the colored thumb tack in the map and update your dossier.
West of the Cascades
Darn it! I am heading out of town mid-afternoon tomorrow, or else would join folks at the Rookery.
Steve in the ATL
@Adam L Silverman: I’m supposed to get a royalty check whenever someone refers to dossier updating on B-J. Is someone embezzling my money? It’s Bella Q, isn’t it?
zhena gogolia
@Mnemosyne:
Is Cary on the train?
dww44
@Adam L Silverman: Adam, I’ve been waiting all day for you to do a post so that I could belatedly Thank You for your post a couple of days ago on Jon Stewart’s all too public shaming/grandstanding in that House Finance subcommittee meeting. Yours was the only explanation that I’ve read online or seen on cable news that critiqued the overly dramatic performance by Stewart and his wholesale condemnation of those subcommittee members. Thank you for coming to their defense. Too bad your take didn’t get half the coverage that Stewart’s performance did. It’s far too easy to believe the worst of our elected representatives and sometimes the facts are not black and white, they are often gray and “extenuating”.
opiejeanne
@Quinerly: I don’t know St Louis but we’re staying at the Hilton at the ballpark (that’s what it’s called), near the Cardinals’ stadium, not far from the arch. We are interested in suggestions for the meet-up.
opiejeanne
@Mnemosyne: Yay! We are tidying up and packing a change of clothing.
NotMax
@zhena gogolia
Just so long as Robert Walker isn’t.
:)
opiejeanne
@zhena gogolia: I would love it if Ozark Hillbilly showed up. We’re going to be stomping around his area, looking at very old cemeteries and stuff.
OldDave
@opiejeanne: If you’ll be in his area, Ozark recommended the “Du Kum Inn Restaurant” in/near Sullivan. I’m not a local, so no real ideas on a location for a meet-up.
opiejeanne
@OldDave: Thanks. I’ll put that on the list of what we might do on this trip.
I might go to the Bushwhacker Museum, but mainly to see the jail. It’s in Nevada (NuhVAYduh) Missouri, a place that used to called Hog-Eye. If there are re-enactors present I may just lose my shit and talk to them about shooting my great grandpa’s dog when he was a little kid, right after the Civil War. Oh, and about them burning down his family’s house.
Ohio Mom
@opiejeanne: My favorite thing in St. Louis is the City Museum.
Yutsano
AAAACK!!! I so wish I could go now! But yeah can’t get out of work dammit. Plus I’m short of funds until Monday.
mrmoshpotato
@Mnemosyne: Getting a sleeper is a must for long train trips if you can afford it.
How long is the ride?
mrmoshpotato
@NotMax: Criss cross
Mnemosyne
@zhena gogolia:
No, he’s flying up Saturday morning instead. ?
@Yutsano:
D’oh! Well, no Giant Evil Corporation Pride hat for you. I keep it for myself now.
@mrmoshpotato:
Yes, I got the smallest sleeper — the roomette. It’s about a 36-hour trip, so one night of sleeping.
I’ve been nodding off all day, so I’m hoping I’m one of the people who can sleep on trains.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steve in the ATL: I keep finding these unexplained deposits in one of my overseas accounts. Weird coincidence, huh?
mrmoshpotato
@Mnemosyne: I’ve done LA to Chicago and SF to Chicago in the roomette sleepers. The train rocks you to sleep.
Gin & Tonic
Sheee-it, that was one of the most exciting basketball games I have seen in ages.
mrmoshpotato
Raptors win! Beware of partying Canadians.
Gin & Tonic
@mrmoshpotato: I’ve done plenty of overnight train trips in Eastern Europe. Yeah, the train rocks you to sleep, but then it wakes you up when they do weird switching maneuvers in the middle of the night.
But I’ve also done 3-rd class, and that’s not something you really want to repeat.
mrmoshpotato
@Gin & Tonic: Never done non-Amtrak train travel.
What’s 3rd class – under the train?
Scotian
@mrmoshpotato:
Yes, woo hoo.
My wife OTOH, happy happy joy joy!,
Gin & Tonic
@mrmoshpotato: 3-rd class is, I guess you could call it, open-plan bunks. Look up the word platskart or platskartny.
First class is a two-person compartment, 2-nd is a 4-person compartment.
Mnemosyne
@Gin & Tonic:
Amtrak has sleepers (first class), business class, and coach. You only get to lay down flat if you pay for a sleeper.
I know people who have done overnight trips in Amtrak coach, but they don’t recommend it.
Bumper
We’re still planning to go. It’s a long drive so hold our seats if we’re late.
Mike in NC
I had a friend with ear problems who hated to fly, so one time in the 90s we took Amtrak from Boston to Chicago. Cost more than flying, took longer, and was not at all comfortable.
Mnemosyne
@Mike in NC:
I saw wild sea otters floating in a slough next to the train while we had dinner just north of Salinas.
That alone made the whole trip worth it to me. ?
The Lodger
Looks like the two of us will be there.
prostratedragon
Some championship game. Congrats to the winners.
Oakland to the Warriors:
Kathleen
@Scotian: Happy Belated Birthday!
Aziz, light!
I live in Portland but am a native of St. Louis. Went to lots of Blues games as a yoot and have some very happy family members.
Last year my work team went to lunch at Raven & Rose, which is a few blocks from our office. The restaurant was so loud we couldn’t hear each other speak. But the bar upstairs will probably be okay. I will be wearing a fleece vest bearing the logo of a federal agency.
Has anyone invited Bob From Moskva?
opiejeanne
@Aziz, light!: I don’t know, but did I tell you that I love your gym? I probably did. I seem to repeat myself these days.
zhena gogolia
@Gin & Tonic:
The Moscow-to-Leningrad “rocks” so violently that I was sick to my stomach by morning.
QUINERLY
@opiejeanne: very late back to the thread. You won’t be far from me. I live in the historic district of Soulard, down near Anheuser Busch Brewery. Some hotels run shuttles to us because of our 30 plus bars, restaurants, music clubs. If you read this, let’s track each other down on another thread.
Aziz, light!
@opiejeanne: Thank you, but I think I’ve changed my nym too much. Formerly it was a Russian idiom in Cyrillic and for ten years before that a food product made from Edward G. Robinson.
opiejeanne
@Aziz, light!: Soylent Green?
opiejeanne
@QUINERLY: YES!
email me at opieunderscorejeanneatyahoodotcom.
cain
I’ll be there ! I dind’t see anybody volunteering to bring green balloons :D
worn
@Aziz, light!: Oh my goodness – in light of his & Mnem’s previous exchanges, that really would be something if he appeared. What kind of something I do not know.
worn
@cain: Just about to go grab some lunch. I will swing by the Fred Monster and pick up some ballons, y’all!
The Lodger
@worn: If they don’t have any green ones, post here and I’ll try Party City on the way in.
