I’m going to work for CNN! I’ll be on the truth beat full-time starting June 17, dissecting dishonesty from Trump, Democratic candidates and others. https://t.co/KBe4IiBfwt
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) June 5, 2019
Dale’s the Toronto Star reporter who’s been relentless live-blogging and fact-checking Trump’s every rally. Lord Smallgloves is gonna have a meltdown as soon as somebody — probably on Fox News — dares to tell him about it.
I started fact-checking Trump in September 2016 because I was frustrated that much of the campaign coverage didn’t seem very interested in talking about what was true and not true. This is a great opportunity to get more facts to a U.S. audience this time around.
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) June 5, 2019
Finally, a huge thank-you to editor @EdTubb. He's been the hidden maestro behind this whole initiative — fact-checking my fact-checks, coming up with informative graphics and statistics, doing the back-end work on the database, a bunch of other stuff. Everyone applaud Ed!
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) June 5, 2019
I am! We’re doing a giant final update on https://t.co/msFz15g7NA today…I fell six weeks behind and it was bad…and then I’ll keep counting at CNN. https://t.co/KSUwEMTRQz

Speaking of which, Trump was trying to organize a boycott of AT&T over CNN.
Yes, it was as ridiculous as it sounds. But he was serious about it.

I am hopeful that DDale will be able to maintain his focus on the GOP and not get sent down the path the prove the veracity of all Dem contenders, because I can sure as hell see that happening.

This is GREAT news. Dale’s live fact-checking of Trump’s tsunami of lies has been a rare bright spot in a mainstream media that seems pole-axed and unable to respond appropriately to the challenges of a pathological liar in the White House. Dale not only fact-checks shit in real time, he gives fellow journalists and regular schmoes alike tips about how to do it, such as pointing out that Trump often tells the same fucking lies over and over, so there’s really no excuse for NOT calling it out.
Dale’s pledge to “dissect dishonesty” from Democratic candidates as well as Trump doesn’t worry me because 1) Democrats don’t lie all the time, and 2) from everything I’ve read to-date, Dale seems like a fair guy who doesn’t buy the false equivalence narrative. We’ll see, I guess, and CNN’s record isn’t great on that score. But on the whole, the Dale hire is a good sign from a big media player, IMO.

Sen. Warren’s new trade policy landed. Jobs training, industrial policy (targeting specific sectors for subsidies and protection), and reining in the traditional/dying bipartisan consensus on free trade. Given the state of the race this may represent the most conservative proposal we see from the serious Dem contenders.

@TenguPhule:
He does care about that though. That’s the way to get him on it. Say he’s making the air and water dirty and filthy. That he will lower the value of the property – the United States. That will drive him fucking crazy. Portray it as him receiving a piece of property and then making it filthy and undesirable, where it’s worth less. He doesn’t recognize any kind of public interest and he actually sees himself as the owner. Accuse him of spoiling the asset.
Kay
@TenguPhule:
When we were trying to get politically conservative landowners here to oppose a CAFO, a “megafarm”, – “farmers”- people who own a lot of property this is sometimes farmed, really, we told them it would stink and bring hordes of flies and pollute the groundwater – meaning the wells THEY drill and drink from. They opposed because they were worried about decreased value of an asset they hold. That’s how Trump thinks of the United States. He’s the landlord.

@Major Major Major Major: Conservative in what sense?
The Moar You Know
I can already see how this is going to go and it is nowhere good.
@Betty Cracker: Dale won’t control what hits the page; his editors will. Given CNN’s dismal track record of insisting on bothsiderism, do you really think they’re going to make an exception for him?

Bad news for the Trump Family and their low quality hires. Mr. Blue Collar Heartland Incumbent shouldn’t be 12 points down in Michigan. I maintain that the real measure of how Trump is faring is how many top-tier Democrats entered to run against him. They’re not stupid. They wouldn’t have done it if they thought he was strong. They would have waited. They have their own political calculus. They think he’s weak. Aside from any principled opposition to him they think he’s a weak incumbent.
Betty Cracker
@The Moar You Know: I don’t think Dale’s presence will banish both-sidesism at CNN, if that’s what you mean. But I do think it’s a positive sign that they hired a guy who made his name fact-checking Trump in real time rather than adding another insipid hack like, say, Chris Cillizza.

In proof that sometimes the arc of the moral universe really does bend toward justice:
Linda Fairstein, chief prosecutor in the railroading of the Central Park Five, has recently had to resign from:
The Board of Trustees at Vassar College, the Board of Directors at the Safe Horizon, God’s Love We Deliver, and the Joyful Heart Foundation charitable organizations, in response to outrage after the Netflix miniseries on the Central Park Five case, “When They See Us”.
As recently as last year, Fairstein submitted an op-ed to the New York Law Journal, insisting that the Five were guilty, their confessions weren’t coerced, and she was blameless, exonerating evidence be damned.

This is the part about power plays that Trump has never understood. At some point the bullied party realizes nothing they do will appease the bully. At that point they say fuck it, and they go for broke. I remember that moment in middle school when my two bullies kept pushing harder. I was legitimately in fear of my well being. The next time they came at me, I went at both of them with a large pipe wrench. Put both of them in the hospital – one for a month with a skull fracture. I might have killed one of them if not for some random adult that pulled me off of them and calmed me down (my dad did get his pipe wrench back). I didn’t expect to come out on top. I expected to get in way more trouble than I got into. But I wasn’t going to go out without a fight.
I don’t understand why every journalistic outfit isn’t dropping the pretense. Just tell the truth. Call out his lies as lies. Call out his criminal behavior as criminal behavior. Call out his psychiatric problems as psychiatric problems. There’s nothing left to lose.
I say the same to House Democrats. Quit trying to negotiate. Start arresting them for contempt of Congress. They’ve shown their hand. They aren’t going to change. You have to force it. It sucks, but it’s their decision.

Good Lord, I had no idea Dale was doing all that on his own time as a hobby. I’m all for him getting paid for it.
As for whether he’ll have editorial interference, I guess we’ll see. This kind of thing is what Dale is known for now, so if CNN ostensibly hires him to do it but then doesn’t let him do it, I’d expect either Dale will leave or we’ll find out that he doesn’t really want to do it that much.
