It’s nice to have electricity again. Just in time for the AM open thread.
I read this a few months ago. IIRC the Obama admin had a better than 69% win rate. It’s because they took governing seriously, understood and followed the rules and procedures, had actual factual and legal basis for everything they did, instead of donny dollhands latest ‘i want my new toy NOWNOWNOWNOW!!!!!’ whim.
It’s why DACA still stands.

I wrote about death and loss yesterday, since it was on my mind, but I’ve neglected to mention the high point of the weekend, which was my son getting his Master’s from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Three years ago, he was kind of aimlessly under-employed, having been sort-of-involuntarily separated from a start-up, and took a wild-ass leap into the unknown – prepared harder than I’ve ever seen for the GRE, scored very well, applied to three of the country’s top 4-5 schools in his field, and was accepted by all of them. Fletcher was a little bit more generous with aid, and they are legendary for their alumni network (the “Fletcher Mafia”), so after agonizing until the last possible day, he went to Medford. While it was a lot (a *lot*) of work, he really clicked with the place and the people. Presented at conferences, traveled on assignment, published one paper and is preparing another, and was awarded a significant fellowship for the next year. Couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.

I’ve had conversations with fellow white folks about that issue that quickly turned into arguments — a waste of time. O’Rourke managed to make the same points respectfully and in a way that could actually change minds. I respect that.

Not really worth the read since it isn’t “Youngstown” and it inexplicably excludes black people – who make up half of the actual “Youngstown, City of”- from the category of “working”.
They should call it “the Youngstown narrative, which may or may not be related to this actual place”
Perhaps “the Trump narrative” is more accurate. There’s newer election data that really throws a wrench into the NYTimes political reporting- the Democrats biggest gains in ’18 (so not net, but gains) were in….rural areas.
They should get Nate Silver back. That has its own problems but at least it wasn’t narrative.

They’re quiet enough in the morning hours,
They’re quiet enough in the afternoon,
Reserving their terpsichorean powers
To dance by the light of the Jellicle Moon.

Within five weeks of Mitch McConnell getting that call from David Vitter saying, Hey I’ve got an aluminum plant we’re going to put in your home state! Thanks from Oleg! —Wendy Vitter’s nomination got pulled off the trash heap by McConnell and now she is a federal judge. For life. pic.twitter.com/RCC4W1kVCW

@rikyrah:
Youngstown itself is sort of interesting. It’s like…belligerent. People trash it but instead of internalizing that as an insult they take it like “fuck you! we are what we are!”
Kasich did this middle of the night takeover of their schools and I knew they wouldn’t stand for it. It’s in the process of repeal right now, as I knew it would be. They don’t like outsiders in a way I kind of admire :)
Kay
@rikyrah:
Right, and then they interview county chairs, who are like “blah blah I knew I was right, I told them…”
I mean, they’re right exactly as often as they’re wrong. Most of them thought Obama couldn’t win because he’s black, which they admitted. We never got interviews where they were wrong, which they are all the time.
Just go to any Democratic meeting. Same. “I told them….blah blah….my particular issue is the deciding factor…” That’s “a Democratic meeting”.

IRS memo says Trump taxes must be given to Congress: WaPo
Rachel Maddow shares a new report from the Washington Post of a confidential draft IRS memo that says the law requires that Donald Trump’s taxes be given to Congress, and the broader context of the Trump administration’s obstruction of oversight by Congress, particular of Trump’s finances.

I said “a month” but it’s a week and here come the crusaders with the crackdown on mommies. So glad we opened up every woman in the country who is even remotely within the range of childbearing age – including 11 year olds- to evaluation by these assholes. It will be a disaster.
schrodingers_cat
@Kay: T admin is going to track every woman’s cycle on an excel sheet, just like they do for the detainees in immigration prisons.
BTW a 16 year old has just died in a detention center in Texas, or should I call it a concentration camp?
Aleta
@Kay: Do you know anything about that magazine called Fed er al ist at your link?
satby
@Kay: judging (unfairly) by the names the women cited were not only desperate but black. Black and brown women, maybe poor white women will be prosecuted under these laws.
The idea that these women were so fucking desperate that they would go as far as shooting themselves in the abdomen rather than carry the pregnancy to term engenders no compassion in the Federalist monster writing that article.

Sixty days since Mueller report’s filing, where’s Mueller?
Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee, talks with Rachel Maddow about the further investigation by Congress of elements of the Mueller report, and when Congress or the public will get to hear Mueller testify.

@MomSense: As a musician (mr ixnay) I think going to music events is great and supports us, but trying to meet new jackals, kvetch, chat, bitch etc is not necessarily easily done while live music is happening. Maybe if it was sequential.
Uncle Cosmo
@Betty Cracker: Clearly you never watched Rocky Jones, Space Ranger as a kid Saturday mornings:
And lest you think viewers were innocent of this terminology, Cleolanta’s main space-deranger pilot inevitably responded to her commands with a hearty Yes, my Suzerain! – which sent us scrambling for the Webster’s in our PJs…

Fuck no, he should recuse himself. Merrick will conduct himself a 10000x better than anything the Republicans do. Nobody in hte Democratic party try to steal a SCOTUS justice from a sitting president. They can go fuck themselves.

By now we already know that the US and the ICE treatment of children does not conform to (or even try to follow) US/state child welfare laws or international standards. Not even observing the right of children to be with their parents, or having policy to treat immigrant children and their welfare differently from adults (in our courts and in captivity (my word)).
The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights — along with lawyers, law students and plain volunteers — works on several levels, helping the children who are already here (and therefore at risk from ICE rather than protected) ; and to change immigration policy to conform to standards like protect kids need. They accept donations and offer advice on how to have a fund raising event.

Can anyone recommend groups on the ground in Boston, etc. that are working to protect/advocate for immigrants and migrants?
Aleta
@schrodingers_cat: That’s good of you. I think they do accept names of willing people in many areas as resources.
My friend who grew up in C. America translates for immigrants in the Boston court system. (Paid job; he works part time.)
Aleta
@Aleta: He is paid by the court system. He has other work and jobs, and ahead of time he commits to the days that he can be available to come in if there’s need for translation. He’s not a lawyer by any means. And is politically radical.

@MomSense: When I was in Portland I got a chance to go to Ameera Bread. https://www.ameerabreadllc.com/menu
It was impressive how their containers to go were from different M.E. countries (Iran of course, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt). (Their bread and food and spices were fantastic.) I stocked up and brought extra back to give to friends. I plan to stop in every time I pass through Portland now, to support in a small way the owner and employees in the face of T’s warmongering.
Since they’re across the street from Baxter Woods, and they also make great ME. sandwiches (w/ meats) on their bread, they might be a good picnic option?
eta best dolmas I ever had
etaeta the Muhamara! (Syrian, made of walnuts and concentrated pomegranate juice, seasoned with hot red pepper and cumin.) and the hummus ! and the fava bean mash

@tobie:
Nope. Will not be embracing fascists! nor people who support or even tolerate fascists. Including haters of immigrants, LGBTQ… community, you name it. Nope! If Beto didn’t mean that, he should have pointed it out. We do have a fascist problem in this country, and many others, and we need to be able to talk about that. Maybe he just isn’t ready to admit that out loud, but in that case he’s late to the game.

@zhena gogolia:
This. I roll my eyes at Seth Moulton or Eric Swalwell (sp?), but I see/hear them in an interview, and damn, they are smart, informed, experienced people. I’d prefer that both of them stay where they are, but I can’t deny that they would certainly be an enormous improvement over DT.
tobie
@J R in WV: You should really watch the town hall before making such a comment. O’Rourke talked about impeachment, the threat of autocracy in the US, and the rise of hate crimes and hate groups, fueled by Trump’s hateful rhetoric. And if you don’t have time to watch the whole thing, here’s a link to his response to the question of hate in American politics.
J R in WV
@tobie:
I’m not rejecting Beto in my comment, I’m rejecting the idea of embracing existential enemies like RWNJ fascists. Beto remains on my short list of candidates I would be happy to work for going towards the General election in November 2020.
He is still several notches from my first choice, below at least Professor Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Kamala Harris. Maybe tied with Booker? So many candidates — almost all of whom are better than Trump. So far we have only contributed to Harris, no hurry to support everyone…
