Sunday Evening Open Thread: Watching War Crimes on TV

Be grateful you’re not the MAGAt minion(s) tasked with spending their Sunday evening toggling between the minute-by-minute ratings for the Game of Thrones / Glory of Trump competition… because there *will* be tantrums.

    It’s true that Donald Trump is an expert on rage-Tweeting, so at least one subject in the interview will be right up his alley.

    Jackie says:

    I watched the Buttigieg Town Hall. Once I realized how much it was bothering Trump that Fox was cheating on him, it was a no-brainer. I hope a lot of Fox regulars tuned in to give it high view ratings.

    zhena gogolia says:

    He can’t even spell Alfred E. Neuman. I thought he’d drop that one after Buttigieg burned him.

    Not a day goes by that I’m not reminded that millions of fellow Americans voted for this evil, insane maniac.

    I have long wondered why people buy crew socks. If you are wearing pants, regular socks work just fine. If you are wearing sneakers and shorts, regular socks work just fine. Other types of casual shoes, you can wear with shorts, you can just skip socks all together.

    But today, I finally get it!

    I have a pair of Sketchers slip on shoes. I wanted to wear them out, but it didn’t feel right without socks. Regular socks would look weird, with those shoes, while in shorts. But crew socks would work! They would look just fine with the shoes.

    I finally get why people want to wear crew socks.

    I don’t know how often enlightenment like this can strike a person.

    The absolute pettiness and vindictiveness of this man never ceases to amaze me. Every day he lowers the nation’s collective IQ just a bit more.

    @gene108:

    I can, and do, carry on at astonishing length about my Skechers. Literally the only shoes I wear anymore. Love them love them love them.

    @Joe Falco: Well, they’ve wanted a president they could relate to for years, and they finally got one.

  9. 9
    gene108 says:

    @SiubhanDuinne:

    My brother got them for me for Christmas. They are amazing! Almost feels like walking on air. Lightest shoes I have ever owned.

    @Joe Falco:

    Not a day goes by that I’m not reminded that millions of fellow Americans voted for this evil, insane maniac.

    Nor that tens of millions of us saw this coming, still see it coming, are still choosing country first and hoping that – not for the Dems’ sake, but the country’s sake – that the Mango Menace strokes out mid-rage-tweet some day, and soon

    debbie says:

    Does he honestly expect Fox to cover him and only him all day every day? Worse than a baby.

  12. 12
    Mary G says:

    Maybe Elizabeth Warren ought to change her mind and do a town hall on Fox to drag him for an hour.

    @gene108: Sounds like a step in getting back to your 25-year-old physique.

    Mike in NC says:

    I would bet some guy calling himself David Dennison had been trying to get people to ask HBO to put Jarvanka on the Gold Throne (iron is tacky, unlike a certain orange turd).

  15. 15
    Juju says:

    Who is Steve Hilton? I’ve never heard of him. In the context given, I’m going to assume a Fox minion of some sort.

  16. 16

    @Mary G: Haha. She has too much integrity to do that. If she gets the nomination, she can call him Brokahontas to his fat, orange, fascist face.

  17. 17
    hells littlest angel says:

    @Jeffro: Sad but true: the best thing that could happen to this country is for that rotten man to keel over dead.

    On the bright side, his tacky state funeral will be a riot. I only hope John Waters is hired to provide color commentary.

  18. 18
    hells littlest angel says:

    @debbie: Does he honestly expect Fox to cover him and only him all day every day?

    Yes. And he thinks that’s a perfectly reasonable expectation.

    Anne, I wanted to thank you for the link to Anne Lesniak’s design page. I usually shop 2nd hand for clothes but love her Don’t Tread On Me art so much I got a shirt (and a bright yellow tote).

    BeautifulPlumage says:

    @gene108: @SiubhanDuinne: another Sketchers convert here. I also like how they last really well. I bought a dress shoe style pair that I wore almost daily for 2 summers and they still look good.

  22. 22
    NotMax says:

    @gene108

    Crew socks are mid-calf length.

    At this point in life I find any regular socks so constricting that they simultaneously end up making my feet throb and hurt – a lot – and wind up causing the ankles and feet to become swollen. Crew socks would be even worse than quarter socks.

    Can get away relatively discomfort free with those no -show types of socks if needs must, provided I stretch out the elastic first.

    Only time I wear socks anymore is when in NY annually, and even then grudgingly. Other than that, it’s no socks and sandals or barefoot year round.

    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Juju: David Cameron’s former director of strategy, which should speak for itself. He has a contract with Fox as a contributor/commentator.

    mrmoshpotato says:

    @NotMax: Must get chilly in the winter.

  27. 27
    Adam L Silverman says:

    This was a clean hit!

  28. 28
    Barbara says:

    @Adam L Silverman: David Cameron’s former director of strategy would have stuck his head in an oven a long time ago if had even an inkling of insight. Unless he is hosting a comedy show or the Guinness World Records for disastrous political choices that didn’t send anyone into combat. Then he might have something to contribute.

  29. 29
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @hells littlest angel: Howard Stern will host. Bubba the Love Sponge Clem will do the color commentary. Hugh Hewitt will have the crowd reaction. Chris Matthews will provide remote reaction from Wilkes-Barre, PA.

  30. 30
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Barbara: I’m not recommending it as must see TV, just answering the question.

  31. 31
    zhena gogolia says:

    @Adam L Silverman:

    I watched a few clips and I think he made the right decision to do this.

  32. 32
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @zhena gogolia: I understand why Warren made her decision. And I have no problem with it. I also understand this explanation that he gave.

  33. 33
    Barbara says:

    @Adam L Silverman: Sorry. Sometimes it just really gets to me how few consequences there are for people who fail so spectacularly at political related jobs.

  34. 34
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Barbara: I am amazed, appalled, and angered.

  35. 35
    NotMax says:

    @mrmoshpotato

    Never gets too bad. Couple of years in Minnesota inured me to the real frigid. Fleecy slippers suffice for chilly winter nights in the abode. Only own one pair of long pants at this point and have yet to ever wear them during 35+ years Hawaii. Shorts are acceptable attire in even the chi-chiest of restaurants on this isle.

    Try my method. Don’t buy socks; knit your own. Can be custom made to fit, and you can knit a looser cuff or a rolled stockinette cuff. I just recently learned magic loop for knitting in the round and since then I’ve been a sock-knitting fool!

    Everyone should at least try knitting – it’s incredibly soothing. And it allows you to feel productive when you’re watching television. “What do you mean I haven’t been doing anything?! Look, I made this sock!”

    We learned the other day that it’s spelled “fuul”

  50. 50
    zhena gogolia says:

    @JoyceH:

    I loved knitting when I did it, but my mother would always put the pieces together for me. I just couldn’t do that part. And she’s no longer with us.

    It’s great for watching television.

  51. 51
    satby says:

    Someone always can put my own small troubles in perspective. While I was taking the dogs out for the last potty break before bed my neighbor came by my yard to tell me why some cars of her visitors were parked blocking our rarely used alley. Her family has gathered because her youngest son had died after falling from his bike and striking his head. She’s a couple years younger than me and I think her son was in his late thirties with a couple of young children. Just heartbreaking.

    Hershey continues to rest comfortably and even deigned to eat a bit. He lets me know when he wants to go out and come back in. So, one more day together with snuggles.

  52. 52
    zhena gogolia says:

    @Steve in the ATL:

    Did you help David Cameron with strategy?

  53. 53

  56. 56
    Steeplejack says:

    @SiubhanDuinne:

    Huh. I need to retire my current pair of New Balance slip-ons, and so the Howie Long Skechers ads have pinged on the radar. I’m so out of it I don’t know whether it’s a real thing or it’s just advertising, so thanks for a push into the “it’s a thing” category.

    @gene108, @BeautifulPlumage:

    Ditto.

  57. 57
    mrmoshpotato says:

    @hells littlest angel: That’ll happen the second after he loses re-election.

    As bluegal(driftglass’s wife) says, “I’m an indepennnndent! I never liked the tweeting.”
    We’ll see Tea Party II – The Teapartier.

  58. 58

  59. 59

  60. 60

  61. 61
    satby says:

    @zhena gogolia: just watched all the linked ones. Can honestly say I’m proud he’s my mayor, and I’m pretty confident he’s going to do great things one day. I hope the eventual nominee recognizes he’d be an asset in a Cabinet position if not as a VP.

  62. 62
  63. 63
    Barbara says:

    @satby: I once called a friend to cry on her shoulder about a break up when she apologized for not having been in touch, because her brother had died in a flight exercise and her family was reeling from grief. He was 23 years old.

    mrmoshpotato says:

  65. 65
    HeleninEire says:

    @SiubhanDuinne: An Irish friend just asked me to bring little girl Sketchers back when I go to Dublin in September for my birthday. Apparently she was able to buy her 5 year old neice, Mia, (who I LOVE to the end of the earth) just regular Sketchers. Well apparently there are Light Up Sketchers that Mia saw on TV and that my friend can’t get in Dublin.

    I got a Sketchers store right down the street.

  66. 66
    satby says:

    @JoyceH: I never got the hang of knitting or crocheting. I color though, have long since before it became a fad for adults again. Very soothing.

    @zhena gogolia: It is. It is also true.

  68. 68

    If anyone is going interested the Game of Thrones finale ended with at least 4 spin-off possibilities.

    Including one for Arya – “West of Westeros”. HBO. 2021.

    Hope combo GoT and American Idol finale slaughtered Trump.

  76. 76
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @hells littlest angel: With Chris Matthews, that’s just SCIENCE!

  77. 77
    satby says:

    @NotMax: not from me! It would end up being soap on a hopelessly gnarled long string of yarn.
    Doubt there’s much of a market.

  78. 78
    Harbison says:

    Up until the past week or so, I had thought “Okay, we’ve made it 1/2 way through the Trump presidency. We will be rid of him soon and we can repair our country.

    But now I’m not sure that’s true and I have no idea what a person like me can do.

  79. 79

    Brit Hume – whose apparent sole job at Fox News is to dishonestly pander to Trump supporters – decided he’d had enough of Trump’s crap. He tweeted this message to Donald Trump: “Say this for Buttigieg. He’s willing to be questioned by Chris Wallace, something you’ve barely done since you’ve been president. Oh, and covering candidates of both parties is part of the job of a news channel.” Trump is angering his allies, at precisely the wrong time.

  89. 89
    JoyceH says:

    @zhena gogolia: That’s what’s great about socks. You knit them in the round and when you’re done knitting, the sock is done; no assembly required. Same with beanies if you don’t want socks. I knitted a bunch of beanies for the chemo clinic free box.

  90. 90

  91. 91
    Ruckus says:

    @zhena gogolia:
    I couldn’t do that, watch TV and knit.
    Any more I have to watch my hands to get them doing anything correctly and even then there’s always a chance that they will do whatever the hell they want. Using a knife takes a lot of concentration. Typing is about 50% correcting mistakes and I used to be a pretty good typist. Hands fingers, feet, they don’t really go where I tell them or do what I think I’ve told them.

    Amir Khalid My dad was the king of the cringe worthy pun. I try to keep up his tradition, but the apprentice never reached the heights of the master.

    Omnes Omnibus – Kind of upset with kindness too. I was planning on binge watching in a week or so. The James Corden show rudely spoiled the war in the North with a joke about being a spoiler. Stories about regretting baby names spoiled another battle. And kindness gives us the ending. At least I have more time to cook meals for daughter and SIL.

    Gonna tap out.

    43,000,000 vs 5,000,000.

    A number we’ll never be privy to is how many subscription cancellations occur over the next month.

    @kindness: I agree with Omnes; you put up a major spoiler before it was aired out here on the West Coast. Don’t be a dickhead like that unless it’s one of Betty’s posts where she gives a warnIng.

    Congress needs to step up and stop this right now. The last Republican president started a war based on lies, it lasted twice as long as WWII, cost us $3 trillion, and caused nearly half a million deaths. We can't afford another one. https://t.co/KPWVIA50Eb— Stonekettle (@Stonekettle) May 19, 2019

    The world can’t afford another one. Some countries are still to recover from that last war.

    @Joe Falco: Yep. And the consequences have been devastating — especially for migrants, POC, women and the LGBT community. Hopefully the 2018 midterms are an indication that American voters have figured out that Trump is dangerous and cannot be allowed to serve a second term.

    Things are really slowing down around here when I wake up to the same open thread I went to sleep on.
    My own Lazarus is bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning, jumped up to go potty outside, enthusiastically gobbled his canned food hiding his medicines that he was refusing yesterday, and is again snoozing contentedly at my side. Just in case the new food was causing all his miserable symptoms he’s getting chicken and rice today.
    One day at a time.

    @Doug R: The popularity of Fox News is greatly exaggerated. I assume quite a few people hate-watch it just to see what propaganda it’s pushing.

    @NotMax: Recommend you amble into a dollar store & pick up two pairs of diabetic sox (one black, one white). Turn them inside out, remove any lint or hanging threads, wash, & wear for a few days. Stylistically boring but who looks at sox anyway & your tootsies may well prosper. I travel in them.

    @JoyceH: My sister knits socks all the time! She uses four(I think) small, double-pointed needles. I tease her about it, I didn’t know that sock knitting was such a dangerous hobby.
