From Aleta:
Do you happen to know personally anyone in the northeast who would be a good, very stable home for two female Finnish Laphunds (6 and 8-9 yo) who just lost their person, my friend. They are not aggressive herders, gentle but very alert to change. Bark a short time, then quiet. The current hope is to find someone w/ no other dogs right now. They been living w two cats. If needed, can be separated. Thick overcoats that shed. I’ve known them for years.
Aleta, if you’ve got photos, send them to me and I’ll update this post with them.

Here’s a shot of the breed. Who’s a good pupster???

I see on the thread where Aleta brought this up that Miss Bianca wants to take them and is willing to go get them.
Who’s in for transport costs?

where to where?
Cheryl Rofer
The discussion is going on at the garden thread. I’ve urged them to bring it over here.
Miss Bianca
We live in south central Colorado. Near the Great Sand Dunes. We live on 35 acres of wooded foothills bordering BLM. Not fenced – fenced is almost impossible – but on a private road and driveway for miles around. My shepherd-rottie mix never strayed farther than 100 yards away.
of course, if anyone closer to Aleta wants them, I would be delighted to kick in for transport costs to them. it’s just that a bonded pair of older Lappies is pretty close to our dream dog set-up.
I am swamped till the first weekend in July with theater stuff, D is free to drive the truck, but assistance would be optimal if we are talking a trip to the East Coast and back!
Got to get to the theater pretty soon for matinee, I will check back later!

I’m happy to kick in!
Miss Bianca
@Miss Bianca: And of course, we do have two other dogs, which is a consideration, because Aleta mentioned a preference for a “no other dog” household. And we are far away, two strikes against, so I’d say, “keep me in mind as adopter of last resort”. Just because D and I *have* researched the breed and were talking of putting ourselves on a puppy list – they are one of the rarest dog breeds in America, so we figured adoption would be almost impossible.

Happy to contribute to transportation costs!

I’m in for transport. Also, nose-boopage through the ether.

@Raven:
Oh, aren’t those cute! like a mix of German Shepherd and Malamute or Husky, kinda. Thanks Raven.
By the way, in case you missed it, I spent hours yesterday touring a WW II vintage DD in those photos, and then found some pix of my old WW II era sub tender to boot. Thanks for that, also too!! Brought back memories, some bad, but most good.
Aleta
Thanks Cheryl.
I just learned yesterday (to my surprise) that no home has been found for them, and I promised to help. Two other friends and our vet are the ones in charge who would give the OK.
Miss Bianca: ?? ? I thought about you right away b/c they are spitz-y too. Colo would be excellent. I don’t know why the ‘only dogs’ part, but I’ll ask. (My dog visited when I was staying w them 3 yrs ago; they were not aggressive to him, though they crowded him. Their house.) Afaik no health issues but I’ll ask their vet about that. I understand the breed is prone to retinal something.
Everyone who loved our friend wants to do right by her dogs, and what I know so far is their initial request about being only dogs, must have fencing and reliably good home There’s also some urgency to find, because the dog’s caretaker/housesitter is leaving very soon and their house sold, and the feeling is they should not go back to the breeder if at all possible. The younger one was already returned once to breeder when she was 1, and then arrived here. These two are very friendly to people and love petting and balls, but will settle quietly too. At first they used to escape and to go for runs through the woods on their own. So they have radio collars now and needed much better fencing. I love them.
I’ll get some more info and report later.

Also meant to add, we will help out for transport costs, of course!
Aleta
@Miss Bianca: Oh that’s so great and I can pass that along.
They’re used to spaces. Someone who gets the breed is the best imo. They are so loving. To me they are ‘small dogs’ — short but wide and solid. These ones have delicate faces. If you want to send me anything else to 3funeyama at g etc I will check it tonight and tomorrow.
I have been thinking about whether we could put up fencing for them here until a home is found if I can change things around, not sure yet. You would be perfect.
Catherine D.
My knees can’t handle one dog long term, let alone two, but if transport passes through upstate NY, I can help and overnight them if necessary. I lurve the Spitz breeds.

@J R in WV: A friend of mine from down under was on the flatop that cut the Evans in half.

I have to leave now, will be back in the evening.

@Aleta: They look like knuckleheads to me!

@Cheryl Rofer:

@Miss Bianca:
You are good people?

I’m in for transportation if I can send somebody a check.
I wish I could handle two dogs — Raven’s pic is pretty enticing.

@Raven:
I saw those pics too. Horrible… the DD was being run by an unqualified officer who flunked his first swing at shiphandling, turned port instead of starboard IIRC, whacked right in two!
My FILs DDE was cut in half by a German torpedo off the coast of Morocco during WW II, they towed the big half (front) back to Brooklyn Navy Yard and welded on a back half that was saved by watertight hatches to make a whole new DDe. Technically it was in the Coast Guard. Horrible event in anyone’s life to be on a ship like that! USS Menges it was. Those pics are hard to see, much to live through it!

Happy to help with transportation.

@Miss Bianca: Did your shop cats ever come back. I remember some cute pics you posted when they were kittens.
mrmoshpotato
@TomatoQueen:
When nose-boopage can’t happen in person, there’s always through the ether.
Miss Bianca
@schrodingers_cat: One kitty burned thru’ her nine lives and is gone, alas, (Lefty, my favorite), and Pancho, so far as I know, is still living large on the ranch. Or at least he was a couple months ago, which is when I saw him.
RAVEN
@J R in WV: They blamed it on the Aussie captain for years. They have a memorial every year and crew members from the Melbourne come.
Also note that the dead crew members are not on the Wall because they were not in Yankee or Dixie Station waters.
Raven
@Aleta: Love em! This is my first dog, Ralphie and his brother Lennie. Not exactly the same but damn close.

@Miss Bianca:
My sister has what must be some kind of cousin to these, a Norwegian buhund. Also a very rare breed. Great dog, if a little high strung. Too bad these are a pair and need a fence because she’s looking to get a companion dog for her Kona and these are so similar.
ETA: I’ll chip in for transport.
Sab
My first dogs were a couple of sister littermates, norwegian elkhound grandmother. One of them obviously had a lab father. She looked like a labrador retriever wearing an elkhound suit. Her sister looked like a tiny (35 pound) German shepherd. Lovely dogs.Twenty years gone and I still miss them.
The lapphunds look like elkhound/corgi mix.
columbusqueen
Can help drive in the Midwest starting in Columbus if needed.
MazeDancer
There is no good reason Miss Bianca cannot be their new mom. Researching the breed is more than a coincidence, and there are no coincidences.
Hope that you are able to convince the steering committee, Aleta, that your friend would be so happy to know her pups are going to 35 acres of snow to the best dog home ever. It was meant to be type home.
Finnish dogs with all that fur cannot live in warm climates. Yay, snowy Colorado.
Everybody’s in for transport.
Sab
@MazeDancer: I agree. Cold weather dogs need cold weather. I moved a three year old German shepherd from Las Vegas to NE Ohio. She never got over her thrill about snow. She used to lie in the yard being snowed on. She buried her feet in the thawing spring snow.
Sab
@columbusqueen: Also me. I’m in Akron. If Columbus Queen needs help or company I am game for a road trip with dogs.

Seems like all the ship-handling accidents are caused by under-trained unqualified officers running the bridge.
We were moored in Key West Naval Station on a sunny afternoon when we heard the collision alarm sounded. Turned out the other ship, a Submarine rescue ship in the squadron was being used to teach junior officers ship-handling skills. Some one managed to swing the smaller ship around the outer mole and across the harbor, directly at the Gilmore, moving fast.
Fortunately, the chiefs on the rescue ship were alert, and dropped all of the anchors. Being a rescue ship, it had like 8 or 10 anchors to hold it still over a damaged Sub, and they dragged on the bottom enough to stop before the collision actually happened.
Unbelievable mud stirred up in the harbor. Scary!! Hard to dodge an incoming ship while moored to the wall!! The things you remind me of!
Auntie Anne
Of course In for help with transportation costs.

@Sab: I had a German Shepard who loved the snow. We got him from a guy in the city and hadn’t ever been let off the leash. When we took him to the park and turned him loose he looked at us like “Really??” and then he just went nuts. He would leap in the air and roll around in it. We’d get ten or twelve kids lined up throwing snowballs at him and he’d run around trying to catch every one.

It never ceases to amaze me how many wonderful people lurk here at this blog. The hearts here are so big.
These pups will be in a wonderful home with Miss Bianca, for sure. <3
Miss Bianca
Keep us posted, Aleta! I understand if your team thinks they would be better off closer to your home, but sounds like there would be plenty of jackals ready to swing into action to get them out this way! Yay, Team Jackal!
Aleta
@Miss Bianca: I got a message that the reason they are looking right now to find a home in driving distance is for vet to stay directly involved for awhile with the dogs’ transition and health after this rough year. Nothing else definite to report. I’ll write you directly after I get more info, which might be a few days before I hear. ?
Aleta
Since I don’t have decision power and gave my friends a strong reference for Miss Bianca, I won’t keep the bleg going at this post. But will let you generous people ? know what happens when I know. ?
Miss Bianca
@Aleta: Heard and received, thank you!
ETA: Just out of curiosity, wondering why the ixnay on returning them to the breeder, which would be one of the usual routes for this sort of case.
Aleta
@Miss Bianca: I’m assuming in general that it was her wish and hope for them to be in a loving secure home right away, instead of a transition followed by a stay followed by another transition? Could just be that friends and vet are trying to follow stated wishes. I’d assumed that there was probably already an arrangement w/ close friends for the pups; have not had time to learn much. Ev. is grief stricken about this.
Sab
Are these guys safely placed yet?
