I like the one two punch. Elizabeth Warren, calling for impeachment. Nancy Pelosi, calling for investigate, investigate, investigate. Both trains, headed in the right direction.
And foo on those who think Democrats are wimps. Hardly. We are the walk and chew gum crowd.
No point to impeaching until the pressure is so tough on GOP senators to vote to impeach as well. It’s not there yet. Investigate, investigate, investigate. Make them squeal.

Never been the biggest Warren fan, but she’s by far showing the most policy mettle in the race – and it’s definitely more substantive than the flashy show John Edwards tried to put on in 2008. That said, she’ll need to distinguish herself in a debate with everyone on the stage. I would be thrilled if she takes Wilmer down a notch by pointing out he is all about ranting about rich people without having actual policy prescriptions to back it up.

There may be costs. LBJ chalked up the south because of the Civil Rights Act. LGBT people got nasty about the response – none- to AIDS. Suffragettes and Womens Liberation were “impolite”. When there is a wrong to be addressed the solution will be messy or there will be catastrophe for everyone. The status quo and tge wealthy believe they will be exempted. They are at times but they get dragged under the jaws of bad karma.

@Elizabelle: I see your point but let’s be honest. There will never come a point in time when McConnell, Graham and other Republican Senators will move to impeach their Dear Leader.
House Democrats should impeach Trump based on the principle that no one is above the law regardless of what will never happen in the Senate. Plus, impeachment hearings will put Trump on the defense. Start them next Spring so that they coincide with his re-election campaign.

Elizabelle:
I have to disagree. There are at least 4 reasons to impeach, whether or not Senate Republicans will vote to remove Trump from office:
1. The pressure on GOP Senators to vote for removal won’t increase until the evidence for, and articles of, impeachment are before them on the floor of the Senate;
2. Politically, it focuses and maintains attention on the crimes of the President – and, assuming the evidence for removal is compelling enough, a vote against it can be used as a cudgel on Republicans who are up for re-election;
3. Not investigating and presenting the evidence for impeachment will only encourage nations hostile to the US to attack our elections again and again, and encourage more and more Republicans to conspire with them – assuming there are any left who aren’t already conspiring with hostile nations to attack our elections; and,
4. Ethically and morally, it’s the right thing to do.

And I think it’s essential to extend anything you do to the middle class, because if you don’t it becomes a poor people program and loses public support. So, for example, about 5 years ago my school district put in public pre-k. We were building a new school so it was a good time to add 1 grade. It isn’t based on income, but 50% of our students get free or reduced lunch which means half are very low income or low income. The preschool is wildly popular, and it’s popular with everyone- so the top 50% are invested in it and will make sure it’s funded, because their kids go there. The top 50 also vote at much higher rates so we literally need them (me, I’m in top 50 and my precinct has 80% turnout for elections) or the funding won’t be sustained.

I also support Sen. Warren and will do what I can to help her win the nomination. But I know she’s a long shot and that the White Dude of the Month (no idea who that will be) when Iowa and New Hampshire vote will almost certainly get the nod. However, even if that happens, Warren will see said nominee steal most of her ideas for the general election campaign. Whatever the outcome of said election, she will be the most influential Democrat in the Senate, much more than Schumer, who’s really just a fund raiser (no knock, that’s a skill).

The Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments today on the citizenship question on the Census. All eyes will be on Roberts. I also hope the House releases a schedule of public hearings soon. The disagreement in the caucus — it seems to me — isn’t really about impeachment but about timing. Impeach now or wait till the cry for it from many quarters is so resounding that even a Republican or two balks. But if the House doesn’t draw attention to what it’s doing, it will seem like inaction, and the media will work overtime to cement that impression.

I’d like to believe you’re right, but it’s pretty clear that Pelosi would like all talk of impeachment to go away.
Warren’s take is based on principles, Trump is clearly unfit for office and continues to actively harm our country for personal gain. Members of Congress take an oath to defend the country and they have the power to remove him. It’s their responsibility to impeach him.
Pelosi’s take is practical. The Republican Senate will never act to remove this president, which means the only real way he leaves office is if he is voted out in 2020. Personally, I think she trivializes his crimes and encourages more bad behavior when she’s quoted publicly saying “I’m not for impeachment” and “He’s not worth it”.

I know I’m the minority here but I was not impressed with Warren’s higher education proposal and have felt that way about a lot of her statements posted on Medium. None are detailed policy proposals. In length and style they are more like op eds. And they paint everything with the same broad brush stroke often using the exact same language: “Here’s the deal–corporate monopolies are gouging hard-working Americans.”
Her university proposal conflates debt forgiveness for loans for public and private universities with free public universities. The two are different problems and need to be tackled in different ways, lest you want state legislatures to control curriculums at state universities and to turn them into professional/vocational schools. The same thing happened with her agriculture statement which conflated seed and chemical monopolies with contract farming for animal feed. I wish Warren would stick to a few issues and really explore them in depth. I’ve come to respect Inslee’s single-minded climate focus.

Oh, I know. We have a kind of snobby education debate. It completely ignores community colleges and various certificate programs, which is amusing, because so many people go that route.
The whole discussion is predicated on “high school senior, packs bags, goes off to state u for 4 years”. That’s not the norm.
Ohio has this College Credit Plus thing going that will be a great experiment. They can get college credit, free, in high school. It is insanely popular. They’re still working out the bugs in our school, which seems to come down to “good counseling”. The college class counts for the high school requirement, so we had 5 students last year who failed the college course and thus didn’t have the required courses to graduate high school. They did summer school but it was a close call. It will save these kids millions and millions of dollars. The really ambitious students complete an associate degree – they graduate high school with it.

The 5 failed the college course in high school not because they weren’t academically ready, they test into the program- they failed it because they were immature and something happened and they got lost, which is FINE- they are allowed to be immature at 15 or 16. But they’re “good students” so they were so upset- crying, the boys and the girls. So the school has to not just rely on the test score. They have to know the kid. If they’re 16 going on 12 they won’t do well. They have to have personal counseling, which costs.

In Akron OH our schools have “early college” which means the better students can go to Akron U on public school dime. Theoretically great idea. Didn’t work out at all well for my granddaughter. @Kay: My old school in Virginia is doing a few things right. They are keeping the college prep/AP program mostly in-house. They are developing specialized programs for kids who intend to go to college in a more vocational capacity. This includes a hands-on STEM program for bright kids who aren’t doing as well in their academic work as they could be. My nephew really enjoyed this program and after a gap year at a military-academy/college prep place is enrolling at a VA public university in an environmental science program. (Part of the reasoning for this was that this program really focuses on study skills, which he needed. Also, he was injured senior year, and competing in this schools track program got him back on the recruitment lists. And, no, I really don’t approve of athletes getting an easier track into college, even though it is working out for my nephew.) They also now have some teachers who teach at both the high school and the community college, so that students who may be struggling at the community college have a familiar face to talk to. Virginia is big on spending two years at community college, getting your associate degree and then transferring to one of the big state schools for your bachelors. A different niece, who had a terrible high school experience, blossomed at the community college, and is now off to “real” college.
I remember reading about a study which showed that the cuts in state’s support for higher ed tracked the rise In prison spending to an eerie degree. This may have been 10 years ago. Anybody recall seeing these numbers more recently? This would be a good argument to make for both cutting prison spending and returning to full funding of higher ed.

It also provides a on ramp back into higher ed for people who realize later in life that they do need that BA. Exactly. The thing is, they are standard conventional Republicans. They seem to think they’re not -that they’re something different, Ivanka says some vapid nonsense about how she’s “practical”. They don’t know they’re standard east coast Republicans but that’s because they don’t know anything and they’re hugely privileged and coddled so they attribute special snowflake status to what are banal, average opinions. If Trump voters wanted standard, privileged rich Republicans they would have nominated Jeb Bush.
Ivanka loves women! And business! She loves woman-business! Also- STEM! She’s Jeb Bush except much less accomplished and experienced.

IMO they’re standing pat because rejiggering the withholding schedules to correct values that preclude April 15 disasters means instant “paycuts” for everybody. They only think about the next 24 hours, tops, and reducing paychecks is bad under that worldview.
We got shithammered, to the point of an under-withholding penalty.

@catclub:
They are actually reworking the W-4; they want it more “accurate” so that the majority of people get no refund at all. It makes the W-4 a lot more complicated, and will be immensely unpopular- no matter how many times your tax adviser tells you not to loan the government money all year, lots of people like getting that refund check.
The chances of Trump/Republicans getting an accurate share of blame for this are approximately zero.

I found this to be a sweet reminder of how early we are in the primary process.

They believe they are entitled elitists. The disdain they have for 99.9% of humans just oozes out when they speak. They are special.
Jared said the investigations and speculation on Russian campaign interference had a much bigger impact than a couple of FB ads. When asked why the campaign didn’t reject Russian attempts to get close to the campaign, he said “we didn’t know that Russia was doing what they were doing. The notion of what they were doing didn’t even register to us as being impactful.”
I think they are deeply stupid people but who would believe that they were that clueless. They knew and didn’t care. They breathe, they lie.

@JGabriel: Another reason for Impeachment: the Mueller report is undoubtedly just the tip of the iceberg. Anyone who is paying attention can see that Trump’s malfeasance and corruption go far deeper. We haven’t even gotten to the tax returns or the money laundering or the selling secrets to the Saudis.

Some of this cannot be avoided. There is the 75th anniversary of D-Day and you could not really exclude an American president.

@Brachiator: May and Trump deserve each other anyway.

@trollhattan: @Amir Khalid: On the eve of D-Day’s 75th anniversary, Dump will call the fucking Nazis “very fine people” and say he would’ve done the Normandy landings better. He’ll also probably ask why the Allies invaded France and overran the country.
I’ve feared the embarrassment and insults for over a year that will result from this moron being in office on June 6, 2019.

Thanks for the tip on this.
I still haven’t had time to finish watching the Reconstruction series.

I think that Boris Johnson is more Trump’s kind of guy. And Trump and Nigel Farage have previously pledged their mutual love. They have a deep fondness for lying and bigotry in common.

@bemused: So believable, considering that Trump Tower meeting and the continued contact throughout the campaign by Don Jr. himself, with Wikileaks.
This is why we need the investigative hearings televised in prime time. Maybe they won’t be followed like the Watergate hearings but more people will the extent of the Trump administration’s corruption.
The media is doing a poor job of informing people so far. On NPR a short time ago they stated that the report found no collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government(leaving out the campaign’s numerous suspicious contacts and the lying and obstruction) and stated that the report just stopped short of exonerating Trump on obstruction. That was a poor and misleading summary of the Mueller report.
Our local NBC affiliate also did a poor job summarizing the report. They called the report confusing.

@Tazj:
I agree we really need to have as many hearings televised as possible. Polls did change, not in trump’s favor, after Mueller report so the more exposure, the better.

You can’t take what she says out of context.
It just doesn’t work that way. When she says it is vital to the meaning and understanding.

Perhaps they have no one capable of reading such a document? Or even of reading someone else’s summary of such a document? Some of them can’t spell spel, after all.

I’m on Warren’s bandwagon. There may be some electibility concerns (idk) but she’s smart, competent and right on the issues. PLUS, I trust her to do the right thing if it becomes apparent that she’s not going to be the nominee.
