Little observation: Harris has stopped saying “if elected President” almost entirely. Has started saying “when I’m elected President.” Says she “fully intends to win this election,” at every stop. One of her more consistent applause lines.

This is noteworthy to me as a pivot from some of the apocalyptic talk of her competitors. More a we’re-going-to-be-ok-because-we-are-going-to-fight-for-change approach than the-wall-has-fallen-and-the-Night-King-is-bringing-the-end-times approach. https://t.co/VDenmU6gUr

There are people of color in New Hampshire, at least around the major college campuses (& the MA border)…
Couple thoughts now that I am home. This #JoyfulWarrior business. I get it now. The Senator comes off as tough-as-nails *strong*. Call-Mr.-Trump-a-Putin-puppet-to-his-face-in-a-debate level strong. But she has an optimism about her, a happiness alongside it. pic.twitter.com/MfxUdRn7qf

That’s my senator!!!
She is fabulous. The looks on those girls’ faces… Harris has Obama’s sense of hope, humility, honesty, and intelligence.
MisterForkbeard
Harris remains my favorite so far, and I’m glad to see she’s getting this kind of very positive reception. The girls in that first video LOVE her and Kamala is incredibly charming.
And then there’s her policies. ;)
And necessary disclaimer: I like most of the Dem candidates too. Just not as much as Harris, with Warren as a close second.
West of the Rockies
@MisterForkbeard:
Yup, Harris and Warren.

Harris and Warren really do seem to be the whole package, honestly
Mike in NC
Senator Harris is outstanding, but don’t think for a second that there is less toxic misogyny in this country today than there was a mere four years ago.
Adam L Silverman
@rikyrah: Did she ask permission before she touched them? Biden’s campaign team wants to know if this double standard is going to be addressed.//
I’m honestly being sarcastic. I also honestly hope no one on Biden’s campaign is currently watching the clip thinking about how to turn it into an oppo ad about how handsy Senator Harris is. Or the President’s…
Prometheus Shrugged
@West of the Rockies: It will be down to these two after Super Tuesday. Harris will win by a huge margin in California and will surprise in Texas and North Carolina. She will also have won South Carolina. Warren will take Massachusetts and Virginia. Whoever wins the remaining slog will have earned it. Either is fine by me.
MomSense
She’s my fave.

There may be the same amount. But we the public voted for the woman running and gave her around 5% more votes than the ass in office. That’s not toxic misogyny. Not everything the founders did was great.

@Prometheus Shrugged: I hope you’re right. Let it be so.
MCA1
She’s f’in great. My first reaction to that video with the young women was “OMG she’s a human being! With a sense of humor and a smile and a natural way of interacting with other humans! What a contrast to the miserable shit inhabiting the People’s House right now.” But then I thought, well, anyone would come off that way compared to Needy Amin. So I watched it again, and, no, initial impression holds. She just comes off as someone you both want to see succeed, and want to follow. It does remind me a little of PBO. That is some serious common touch there, and she’s not in any way being a “politician.” She’s just connecting with younger people and offering life advice, and it’s good advice.
And the amazing thing is, she’s not the only one in this race on the Dem side about whom you can say those things. We’re blessed, if we can avoid fucking it up and circular fire squading it and all.
I’m kind of looking forward to the general election, when everyone will get to see the contrast between revanchist miserable paranoid NPD sociopathy and actual functioning not broken human being. I think it’s going to be in even sharper relief than in 2016 because the mood of the country is “JFC, just make it stop already with this constant parade of degradation and degeneracy.”
West of the Rockies
@Prometheus Shrugged:
I hope you’re right. I think they’d be a formidable 1-2 ticket, but I think having one of them remain a standing senator would perhaps be more valuable than VP. YMMV.

Good luck to her. Harris is not my top choice but I would be happy to support her in the general.

All I know is we need to light up the youngs for this election.
And that doesn’t even count the generation behind them (“Z”, I guess) whose oldest members will be voting in their first presidential election in 2020.
They’re going to decide, imo, who the nominee is, and speaking as an old, I want them to. All of them are old enough to remember that the USA used to have the amazing Obama family in the White House. And they loathe trump in even bigger numbers than any other generation.

When Kamala says she can win, I believe her.

My ideal ticket would be Abrams/Harris.
But as Abrams isn’t running I’ll take Harris/Abrams and keep Warren in the senate. One less seat to have to win there and she can get a lot of stuff done if we could take the senate because she’s got great ideas about legislation.

I’m not so sure about that conventional wisdom. Every person I know or see from 18-25 has a phone and is on it constantly. Sure they are not necessarily involved in politics but they do see the economy, they do see how much school costs, they do hear about the shithead in the oval and many of them do actually talk to other people. That may or not cause them to vote on our side but they are connected, even if that connection is not exactly like reading BJ 12 times a day. The kids with the marches, they did that in what 2 weeks or something like that. There are a lot of motivated young adults and I’d bet that many are as motivated as the kids that age were in my day, when being 18 and male meant the draft, in one way or another.

She focuses on making the economy fair after we’ve watched a nepotistic administration use the office to self deal.

In the midterm their turnout went from the abysmal 20% to 36%.
We won at least some of those races because of them. They also have daily exposure of AOC, one of their own, looking like a person who can make shit happen.
I might be hopelessly naive in my dotage, but this one feels different. Their number one issue is climate change, and we might get some extra turnout points out of that.
I think this is the real reason to be interested in Mayor Pete — not that I think he should win, but that I think he embodies the idea that it’s time for this generation to take seriously that they have the numbers that can translate to actual power. We’re not begging them to help us, in other words. We’re telling them to recognize that it’s their table to run if they want it.
Different message, different reality.

Harris has been my first choice for a while now. I love Warren, but she’ll be 70 this year, and I want somebody younger. One thing that has me happy is the fact that there are multiple women in the race. Let’s extrapolate… turnout in the midterms increased in the under 30s by 16 points, which is an increase of 80%. Obviously, there’s still plenty of room to grow, but an 80% increase from one midterm to the next has to mean something.
How about 2016?
The under 30 turnout was 46.1%
The over 65 turnout was 70%
If the 2018 increase is only half — 40% instead of 80% — that gets the under 30 turnout to 64.4%.
There’s a lot of room to grow for this group, and not much for the olds. Throw in the fact that the youngs favor Democrats 67 to 33, while the olds only favor Republicans by 8 points, and it becomes not just possible but likely that young Americans will seize this moment.

@Ruckus:
I want to express something I’ve been ruminating over for a long time; I hope I can do so effectively.
There are comments we hear routinely that are at heart targeted at very specific groups but which use less-than-discriminate phrasing. For instance, “Men are pigs,” or any variation of “White men put Trump in office.”
Many men are pigs. If it is 25 or 50%, I don’t know. Hell, maybe it’s more. If you protest, there are those who will tut-tut and roll their eyes and say sarcastically #NotAllMen.
White men were an EMBARRASSINGLY LARGE percentage of Trump’s voters. But millions of us voted for Hillary. I loathe my cohorts who voted for the guy. But we are not by race a monolithic block.
The overly general phrasing I can understand, ignore, not trip out over most of the time.
Sometimes though, it is annoying and rather counter-productive.
Earlier down thread today, someone said (I paraphrase slightly), “another white guy decided to run–just what we need, more white p3nis.” That felt like less-than-artful phrasing, to say the least.
Anyway, them’s my thoughts. That’s just, like, my opinion, man.

Seems you tipped a nest full of aged but still feisty old hornets. Yes, most, if not all of us LAB’s (Liberal Asshole Boomers) have our share of Assholian moments, but generally in more individualized ways – not generally in any group lockstep marching pattern.

@ThresherK: I was actually rooting for Calgary, as I was rooting for the Jets and the Leafs, as I wanted to see at least one Canadian team go deep this year. But in the last several games the Avs looked like the Lightning were supposed to and made the Flames look like the Lightning actually did.

I am interested that there are folks who think there is a future for a Harris/Warren or Warren/Harris ticket. It’s not that common that two of the brightest stars, or two of the most powerful voices, of a political party agree to be on the same ticket.
Maybe that can be seen to have happened with Kennedy/Johnson and later with Reagan/Bush, but there were exigent circumstances around those candidacies.
The presidential candidates and their teams are not all that comfortable with taking on a vice presidential contender who has their very own revved up power base.
Similarly, tested and popular political leaders are somewhat unlikely to become part of the political back water that is the office of Vice President.
Lastly, while talking heads like to claim otherwise, statistical data show that the vice presidential candidate is not an important factor in attracting votes for a presidential candidate. That fact gives both a presidential nominee and a possible vice presidential contender the power to make a choice that feels right for them and doesn’t feed into some larger theoretical political narrative.
Harris and Warren will not be on the same ticket.

@trollhattan:
On election day ’16, I texted my then-14-year-old daughter to say, ” I just voted for our first female president!!!”
That evening was a nauseating, surreal gut punch.
It wasn’t until I was marching in the Women’s March (as a mid-50’s white dude) that I felt we’d all survive and that hope was still alive. So, yes, let’s hand the reigns to women. To quote Jimmy Buffett, “I’d like to vote for a princess or a non-terrestrial…”

@Adam L Silverman:
I’ll agree with that.
Thanks for the fun tonight. We need that every once in a while, life is too serious far too often. Mine seems to be getting more serious as the days go by so I’m just trying to make it to the next one and the one after that without tripping over my own two left feet. This getting older stuff isn’t for sissies.

Last hockey game I saw live was at The Fabulous Forum, Kings vs Montreal. Gretzky and Co. lost 4-3. Tons of celebs. Watched (with binoculars) Reagan chowing down on a hot dog. Nancy was beside him in her ubiquitous red dress. Woot-woot.

@Ruckus:
Boy is that for real. I just recently got home after spending a month-and-a-half in the hospital, during which time there was some doubt about when, or even if, I’d be getting out. Luckily for me things turned around fairly sharply in my favor, but I’ve still got lots of tests, appointments, possible major surgery and recovery time coming up.
Best wishes and good luck with your situation.

@John Revolta: I’m not sure about that in this era. After watching Gillum narrowly lose after putting a milquetoast white guy on the ticket, I’ve reached the conclusion that wypipo who will vote for a PoC will do that regardless of the other on the ticket while those who won’t don’t care. With Gillum I think adding a Latino might have helped.

Apparently Vegas fans are claiming Pavs just tripped and the refs gave the game to the Sharks. Assholes.

They actually did put out an album around 1972, “A Date With Danger”. There’s a YouTube snippet from it and apparently the album is available thru Amazon.
I think I may have screwed up a blockquote here, but I’m too tired and lazy to try and fix it.

Oh, man, 6 weeks of hospital chow, constant chimes and alerts, the sound of wretching and… Ugh.
I’m glad you’re out again. Continued health to you.
I’m pretty fit. I try to walk a marathon a week (running 4 or 5 miles of it), swim a mile, and do some light lifting. But a bout of diverticulitis knocked me down for a good two weeks.
It’s made me work on my diet and cut back on wine.
prob50
@West of the Rockies: Thanks. Low-sodium diet, no booze whatsoever, but I’d mostly quit quite some time ago. Lost about 35 lbs but have gained 6 or 7 of it back already with high-protein diet and supplements. I’m getting around fine, but need to work on upper body strength, so I need to start doing some lifting.

@Ruckus: @prob50: Yeah, it sucks to get old and have your body start falling apart. I went to have a Rituxin infusion this morning and after more tries than is legal they couldn’t get a vein to hold and now I have to go to the hospital tomorrow to have a PICC line put in and keep it for the two weeks between infusions. I’ve had more IVs than I can count and though my veins are twisty and rolly I’ve never had one blow out before. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself, but hearing about a month and a half in the hospital makes me grateful it’s not worse.

@West of the Rockies: I get where you’re coming from, but as a 50 year old white male, we would do well to step way the fuck off. It’s not really enough at this stage to step back and ask that we get the same treatment as everyone else. Maybe we can ask for that in the future. But there’s not a lot that’s wrong in this country that we can’t put solidly on the shoulders of white men. I’ve worked my whole life to do good, and I think I have, as have many other white men I know, but it’s not nearly enough to make up for the harm that our votes, our complacency, our willingness to look the other way, our desire to take care of ourselves have done to those that never had a chance at running things. Even the white men we generally consider to be good have a lot to answer for – Clinton, Biden, etc. We gotta step aside and turn this over to others, women of color, young people. Maybe learn a thing or two along the way.
The gun problem in the US is a white male problem. The white men in charge of things didn’t fix that. Climate change is another white male problem that white men didn’t fix. People are angry, and we supported a culture that favored us at their expense, so they’re angry at us. It hurts, but I can’t fault them. So, I embrace it, because that’s what people need.

They have been talked about a lot and then never showed up, indeed.
Until 2018. The younger voters finally did show up then, and they are the reason Pelosi has a working majority. I don’t think they will go home in 2020.

@West of the Rockies: All I can say is that as a 50+ white woman, I have felt out of step with my “generational average” ever since I watched the returns come in on election night 1980, the first presidential election I ever participated in. It’s important to understand that even in our polarized times, with respect to any age or other demographic group, millions of people deviate from the “average” or “majority” that makes up the norm. Nonetheless, you also have to recognize that people in our demographic have been in control for a while now, and that control has yielded a person like Trump. It’s not our fault personally, but it is clear that to get some other result we have to start looking well beyond us. Continuing to insist that people like us should stay in charge will continue to yield approximately the same results. And that is, at the end of the day, my biggest objection to both Biden and Sanders.
Miss Bianca
@Gretchen: i want Harris/ Warren. I would *love* Harris/Warren. But if Liz ain’t Prez she’s probably better left in the Senate. Because damn, will we need a strong Dem Senate! I am so pissed at Hickenlooper for not declaring for Senate – he has laughably little chance at the Presidency, and he would have been a SLAM DUNK fir the Senate.

@Barbara:
Dead thread, but anyway…
You make good points, but please understand, nowhere in my comment did I argue that white men should stay in charge, nowhere, never.
Barbara
@West of the Rockies: I guess the point is that even if we don’t personally subscribe to our generational “norms” we have to recognize them and not be affronted when they are pointed out. And one of those norms has been to concentrate power in a very narrow slice of the population. “I’m not like that” isn’t adequate as a standalone response. When I used to visit my great aunt in a nursing home she complained a lot about having to share space with so many grumpy people. At one point when she was explaining what she meant, she said, “oh, you know how old people are.” I mean, she was over 90 at the time, nonetheless, pointing out that she wasn’t like that at all didn’t solve her problem.
Ohio Mom
This thread is dead and I am skipping to the end without reading it.
Did anybody ask where the boys were? Loved seeing those girls excited to meet Harris but where are their classmates? Does it really start that young, even now?
Am I the only one worried that Harris and Warren are going to split the vote of all the smartest, most sensible voters and let someone else much less qualified slip ahead? This is my biggest concern at this point.
Kristine
