The man in black is getting a statue in US Capitol!!!!
Johnny Cash replacing Confederate-era Arkansan, along with civil rights icon Daisy Gatson Bates replacing another Confederate Arkansan.
Very sensible moves. I'll walk that line. https://t.co/NC0PgOh2J5— Paul Kane (@pkcapitol) April 17, 2019
Per the Washington Post:
The likenesses of music legend Johnny Cash and civil rights icon Daisy Lee Gatson Bates will appear in the hallways of the U.S. Capitol in marble form, replacing two figures from the Civil War.
Last week, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) signed a measure to swap out the statues of individuals from the 19th century for more modern representations of the state.
The current statues of Uriah Milton Rose, an attorney who sided with the Confederacy, and James P. Clarke, a governor of the state who held racist beliefs, are not being removed because of their controversial past, but rather because of a decision by the state “to update the statues with representatives of our more recent history,” Hutchinson said in a weekly address. The statues of Rose and Clarke have been in the Capitol for nearly 100 years, he said…
Cash, the esteemed country music artist with crossover appeal, hailed from Arkansas. Some state lawmakers were opposed to using Cash to represent the state in Washington because of his troubled past, according to the Arkansas Times.
“Mr. Cash is a great musician . . . but the drugs, the alcohol, the women, that kind of thing . . . no, I can’t hold him up to my children as a model,” state Rep. Doug House (R) said.
But eventually the measure passed.
Bates played an integral role in the desegregation of schools in Arkansas, including guiding the African American children known as the Little Rock Nine as they attempted to enroll in an all-white school.
“The history of the civil rights struggle in Arkansas is an essential part of our story that says much about courage and who we are as a state. Daisy Bates was a key person in that story. She continues to inspire us,” Hutchinson said…

Yesterday I asked them how in the fuck they could support a draft dodging punk like Trump? Dogs are bigger payoffs in terms of big showy devotion, but they are considerably more resource intensive from the walks, the training, the larger food requirements, etc. Cats are more self-maintenance, especially in something like my setup, with indoor only cats and automatic litter devices.
Sadly, people with dogs are happier because they feel settled enough to have a dog, with the housing, need for walks, and upkeep being something that is a marker of relative wealth.

As I recall, Adam has said that one of the central Trump principles is “Donald Trump Will Be Treated Fairly or Else.” As I read twitter comments from Sanders supporters about the CAP article, it seems to me that’s Sanders’ central principle too. I think it’s a given there will be politically motivated law enforcement actions around the Democratic candidate in 2020. I say this because there was politically motivated law enforcement interference in the 2016 election, the FBI working for Trump by planting news stories. It’s already happened. Comey I don’t think was politically motivated. He’s just a hugely egotistical moron.
So we’ll have to watch for that. The idea that Trump won’t use these DOJ hacks to harm his political opponents is nuts- of course he will. I would bet my house on it. They have no integrity (that’s why they were hired) so they will of course all go along.

Trump got rid of Sessions because Sessions recused. They went looking for someone who wouldn’t adhere to those ethical standards, and they found Barr, who actually auditioned publicly for the job of “AG with no integrity- team player!”

So yesterday, I received a notification that our application for consideration for Express Entry to Canada had made the score cutoff and we are invited to apply for Permanent Residency. It’s actually a fair bit of hoops to jump through; we spent the fall registering for and taking language tests, having our US transcripts evaluated for Canadian equivalency, etc. and now there are background checks, fees, and other bureaucratic stuff. But it also feels good to have something concrete as a backup plan. Before I get dumped on for bailing on the US, let me just note that this is more of making sure I make a safety net/insurance policy for my family just in case. Anyways, it’s a mixed feeling. Happy to have made the cut to get the invite and have the opportunity and sad that it feels like it’s necessary to do.

It’s funny because I feel like I’m out of step with that. I’m going to run as a delegate to the convention, which means I pick a candidate and run in “their” caucus, for my congressional district. That candidate’s supporters then elect me as the delegate. You know, maybe they do :)
Anyway, there’s a strategic advantage to running as the less popular candidate’s delegate, because I then get ALL of those person’s votes, where the more popular candidates supporters will split their votes among several prospective delegates. That’s how I won the Obama caucus- I was unopposed because Clinton was so dominant at that point in ’08.
THIS time I plan to run as a delegate for the candidate who is the majority choice in the county Dem Party, because I find I’m fine with all of these people, with the exception of Bernie and I don’t like Biden as a candidate. The rest I’ll take any of them.
But if I stick to this I could end up a Bernie delegate- really not, because a Berniac would beat me, but that’s the scenario I’m looking at- I’m fine with the whole non-Bernie field. I just don’t dislike any of them.
