On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
Happy tax day, US readers, I hope this year didn’t screw too many of you!
Attentive readers may have noticed that my name is no longer “Alain the site fixer”. This is because for the next while, I won’t be; while the rebuild and associated changes are made, I’m not doing squat. Once the dust settles, we’ll see what’s what. So it made sense for me to remove that part of my nym. I’m still here and if things come up, I’ll jump in to help, of course, but for now it makes sense to remove this extra cook from the kitchen.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Today, pictures from valued commenter Albatrossity.
Vermilion Flycatcher male, snagging flies at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico 3/28/2019
Roadrunner – Also at Bosque del Apache, looking good with that patriotic eyeliner 3/28/2019
Red-tailed Hawk of the western (calurus) subspecies, near Portales NM 3/27/2019.Two images. One shot shows the bird’s somewhat unusual overbite; the upper beak usually does not protrude quite that far over the lower. The second shows it’s lovely spread tail, highlighting the rufous uppertail coverts that are an excellent field mark for this subspecies. Those uppertail coverts would be white or white barred with rufous in most redtails in eastern North America.
Porcupine – At Buffalo Lake NWR near Canyon TX, a refuge that has neither a lake nor any buffalo. But it did have this friendly porcupine. Most folks are probably unaware that this mammal is found in TX.
Blue-winged Teal couple at Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge in central Kansas, 3/25/2019
Thank you so much Albatrossity, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

One of these things is not like the other.
Beautiful pics.

That bird needs an orthodontist.

I love the composition of the two teals. And I’m pleased to see the flycatcher is slightly blurred. I was beginning to fear you were perfect.
JPL
The photos are amazing.
Mary G
Always thrilled to see Albatrossity photos, and Mr. Porcupine is a bonus!

@David Evans:
I agree, this shows every feature of these beautiful creatures. Mr Audobon would be proud.
debbie
Beautiful! I love the sound ducks’ wings make when they fly overhead.

An Albatrossity day is always a great pictures day!
Tell the truth Alain, you must be relieved as fuck not to have to deal with this mess!
Another Scott
Fabulous pictures. Thanks.
Morning grumble – Happy tax day, yeah, sure. We ended up owing about $20 more in total than last year, but because they changed our withholding and reduced it too much, we had to send them a check for $4000+ (rather than getting a $500+ refund). Happy day. :-/
McConnell is such an evil man.
[/grumble]
More pictures, please!
Have a good day, everyone.(except Mitch).
Cheers,
Scott.

Incredible photos, Albatrossity!
MelissaM
Wow, what pictures! I love how the teals look like they don’t even have feet, they are so tucked in.
@Another Scott: We owe about 1,300, due to our withholding dropping and not getting noticed. Our total tax bill went up by about $200. Super frustrating!

Great pics, wildlife photography is hard and requires a great deal of patience(as well as a good zoom lens).

I am in awe of the photos — magnificent work, Albatrossity!
Alain — is “Alain, the Once and Future Site Fixer” too presumptuous of a nym?
We expected bad things for our taxes. Instead, we ended up with both our Fed and State taxes going down a bit. I’m OK with my Fed taxes returning to their previous rates, as long as everyone making more than me (and the corporations) do the same. All eyes on 2020!

I always look forward to Albatrossity’s pictures.

Excellent photos! I remember a college ecology field trip to Bosque del Apache. In one day we (meaning De Beitelman, the professor) spotted 70 different species of birds. An amazing place

These pictures did more to cheer me up and prepare me to face the day than coffee. Splendid as always, but I really love the roadrunner. I’ve never seen one up close and didn’t realize how beautiful they are. But of course, they’re birds so why wouldn’t they be?
rikyrah
I totally respect those who can take these animal shots. I don’t have the talent.

Albatrossity!
Looking at the photo of the blue-winged Teal couple, I could feel my breathing slow and a feeling of calm washed over me. Just birds and quiet sky. Just lovely.
Kattails
Great shots. I love that hawk stare, and your porcupine looks almost cuddly. Thanks for sharing! I used to live in south Jersey on the Atlantic flyway. Miss seeing all those birdeez come through. But, my Phoebes just got back so life is good.
TomatoQueen
Lovely pics (hello Mr Porcupine, with your benign grin), especially the ducks in flight and the roadrunner. Other Roadrunners on the road today are all the folk in the Boston Marathon, the official logo of which is a unicorn.
Mart
Love the pics. Flip the roadrunner eyeliner colors around and you have Puerto Rico’s flag.

Hey, the only blurry part of the flycatcher is the wings, which for a bird like that in flight is a good thing, it gives you a tiny sense of the actually frantic motion of a bird able to take flying insects out of thin air!!
Albatrossity — great photos, such an eye, so much patience and technique. Jealous, you can call me that.

Gorgeous photos! Thanks for showing us.

The blue-winged teals make me think of Koson’s On the Wing.
