Okay, I’m confused. Why would Trump have any say over McCain’s funeral? Wasn’t he laid out in the Capitol and the funeral in the National Cathedral? What power does the president have over any of that?

I wonder if he’s thinking of the order to lower flags to half-staff on federal properties. Otherwise, AFAIK, the POTUS has no say about who is honoured by lying in state at the Capitol, or who gets a funeral at the National Cathedral. Maybe Adam can provide some detail.

Here in Beautiful Downtown Glendale, the rain is falling and my legs are still sore for my romp though the poppy filled hills on Monday. Madame and the kid are cruising the Western Caribbean and sent regards from Belize, I think.

KAC and her husband are professional Republican ratfuckers from way back. I bet they’re hedging their bets. OT: Today was the third day I was able to get onto the elliptical machine. My knees have gained enough flexibility to where I can slowly pedal around. My therapist is thrilled at this because Monday I had this large weight shift to my left because my right knee still isn’t as flexible as the left (66 degrees of flexion for the right, versus 85 degrees for the left. Accident impact side was eighth), while today it was more fluid. It’s slow progress, but it’s progress.

I can’t wait for him to start attacking the Khan family again. There really is no bottom he will ever reach. It’s continually down. He’s a drowning man, grasping at anything to stay afloat. Hopefully he pulls all the Republicans with him.

  40. 40

And yet, the vast majority of Republican voters still approve of him and the job he’s doing.

They specifically love outbursts like this. They see the president they elected whining and bitching about every little thing, and they see themselves and feel validated. The Republican Party lives on grievance over not getting their way all the time and no longer being catered to as the gold standard of humanity.

  41. 41
    Adam L Silverman says:

@geg6: @SiubhanDuinne: He didn’t. He wasn’t given a state funeral on par with that of former presidents. The only thing that, I think, the President had to okay was use of military aircraft to transport McCain’s remains from Arizona to DC. And even that was most likely done with Mattis authorization, not the President’s. The President could have stopped it, just as he could have probably ordered the military – the Arizona National Guard and the Commanding General of the Military District of DC and through him the Army’s Old Guard and the Navy Choir and band and the all Services honor guard – not to provide honors befitting a veteran, but had he done either of those things, my guess is Mattis would’ve gone ballistic.

  42. 42
    AThornton says:

The vast majority of self-identified Republican voters approve of Trump and the total number of self-identified Republics has dropped to 26%. So he has a high approval of an ever-shrinking population.

    As the WaPo puts it:

“Eighty percent of Republicans” may sound good, but if the GOP is only 26 percent of the electorate, that gives Trump just under 21 percent of the entire pie. That’s awful, to put it mildly.

  43. 43
    debbie says:

    👏👏👏👏 On your progress.

  52. 52
    Adam L Silverman says:

@Elizabelle: The dossier. He’s convinced that McCain was in on the Clinton’s conspiracy with Mueller, the British, Comey, the DOJ, FBI, CIA, and the rest of the US Intel Community, and the Democrats conspiracy of creating the dossier to prevent him from becoming president. Which, given that the dossier didn’t get released until after the election, was barely teased by David Corn the week before and got completely overrun by Comey’s letter to Chaffetz, makes no sense whatsoever. But consider the source.

  65. 65
    Adam L Silverman says:

@rikyrah: Not as nefarious as it seems:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her chief of staff have been removed from the board of the Justice Democrats PAC, according to a report.

The Democrat from New York and Saikat Chakrabarti, who was her campaign chairman, were de-listed last Friday, the Daily Caller reported on Monday, citing documents from the Washington, DC, Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs.

The action was taken because the two never told the Federal Election Commission that they controlled the PAC while it was simultaneously supporting her primary campaign, the report said.

The two joined the board in December 2017 and continued to hold “legal control over the entity” leading up to her June 2018 Democratic primary win over incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, the report said.

Ocasio-Cortez was removed from the board the same month but was listed as an “entity governor” until March 14, the Daily Caller reported, citing corporate filings.

But Corbin Trent, the congresswoman’s spokesman, said she left the PAC as soon as she beat Crowley.

“She left the board, I think it was the day after the primary. They just filed the paperwork in D.C. (this month) So there was a change there,” he said.

He also said Ocasio-Cortez sent an email to the Justice Democrats’ lawyer announcing her resignation.

“We all resigned because we thought it was the right thing to do, not because it was the law,” Trent told The Post.

I am glad to see that you’re making progress.

  77. 77
    Leto says:

@WaterGirl: The surgeon who did the initial surgery honestly didn’t think I was going to live. After the first 24 hours he revised his assessment to yeah, he’ll make it to, 48 hours later, he’ll walk/run/cycle again. The reason they didn’t think I’d survive is that the type of injury I had (open book fracture of the pelvis with perenial shearing) has low survival odd (that was the most severe of the numerous injuries). To say that I was known to most of the entire hospital staff is an understatement. I’d meet people 2/3/5 weeks later who would greet me and say, “I know you don’t remember me, but I was in the ER/OR when they brought you in. I’m so happy you made it and are doing better!” I always thanked them profusely (I was basically doing that since the moment I “woke up”), so if they did call me “miracle boy” or something similar, it was due to them that they could 😀❤️

  78. 78
    Adam L Silverman says:

@Leto: It was. The President has actually been making insulting comments about McCain going back to 1999. At least that’s the earliest recording of him doing so during an interview.

She’s awesome and knows how to push my buttons :) I’m probably going to find machines like that, as well as my bicycles, problematic from here on out but we’ll see.

    @JPL: 😀

@Adam L Silverman: Haha, is expect no less from a stinkin’ grunt! You made me admit (in public) that TOC coffee was good! :p

    And thank you :)

  84. 84

  90. 90
    Leto says:

@Adam L Silverman: wow. Wtf was the axe to grind then? Apparently McCain has been living rent free for two decades. Who knows how much longer?

  91. 91
    WaterGirl says:

@Leto: Thanks for all the info. I won’t argue with you :-) but I will posit that what the medical staff provided was amazing care, and that it was necessary but not sufficient. You were fit and strong when you got hurt and I suspect those two characteristics were necessary for you to make it, as well.

Any way you look at it, we are all so happy that you made it and are going to come out the other side still getting to be you.

  92. 92
    WaterGirl says:

@Gin & Tonic: Good for you, on both counts! I never did hear how you got from “the bones just won’t mend” to “hey I am finally better”. What magic finally got your bones to knit?

  93. 93
    Adam L Silverman says:

@Leto: It is a very good question. I’m not sure we’ll ever get an actual answer. It is possible the President sought some sort of political favor for a donation and McCain, notoriously cranky at the best of times, told him to go fuck himself. It may be that Stone and Manafort who were connected to the President back then had a problem with McCain at the time and it bled over. It could’ve also been a grudge inherited from Roy Cohn who mentored the President, Stone, and Manafort.

I also have a theory, more like a wild assed it makes sense, but there’s no proof explanation, about Roy Cohn. I would not be surprised if we one day found out that from very early on – as in when he was working as McCarthy’s legal bully – that Cohn wasn’t actually a Soviet asset. Largely because they were blackmailing him over the fact that he was heavily closeted at the time. His post McCarthy/Red Scare work would have positioned him as a keen look out for possible other assets, willing or unwilling, witting or unwitting, to recruit. It would explain a lot. It is also completely based on nothing other than a hunch.

Yeah, pretty much. I think he was late in the first place to order flags lowered, raised the one on the WH the minute he could, was told by his peeps the optics were FUCKING TERRIBLE, and grudgingly had them ordered to half staff for another week, or until McCain was properly buried, or something.

Aside from everything else, he has absolutely no sense of symbolic gestures. Even I feel he himself is immune, you’d think he might be a little more aware of the kinds of semiotic messages he sends to his MAGAts.

(And I’m one of those people who think the hero worship of John McCain, by the media in particular, was fundamentally unhealthy for our democracy).

Aside from everything else, he has absolutely no sense of symbolic gestures.

I think he has a very astute appreciation of the meaning of symbolic gestures. He was holding off on the flag lowering precisely because he wanted to send a message of contempt, and he only relented when people convinced him that the political cost wasn’t worth it.

@Leto: I didn’t see a humble brag anywhere; what I saw was you giving the docs et al all the credit, and not any to you.

Besides, I think there are times a person does get to brag. If you’re in high school or college and you’re a good student and you brag about getting a A on something, you’re an asshole. But if you’re a C student and you busted your butt studying for the final or you worked your ass off on some paper, and you get an A, you damn well do get to brag about it — what you’re really doing is sharing your excitement.

Personally, I think you get to do any and all bragging you want to as you get back to being able to do more things. We share your excitement and want to hear about it.

    Cockburn March 9, 2019 6:58 pm

Cockburn hears that Mueller wants to indict the President but Barr doesn’t – while the two men agree that Trump’s children should be charged

You do know that Trump thinks so highly of himself that he just knows that he could fly a plane and never get shot down or captured. Thing is though that if any of this happened he probably would have crashed after shorting out all the electronics because he would have pissed himself, and then wouldn’t have lasted the first 5 minutes because he would have asked them “Don’t you know who I am?” and his captors would have by then have figured out he was a worthless piece of shit and said “A dead man.”

I think he has a very astute appreciation of the meaning of symbolic gestures. He was holding off on the flag lowering precisely because he wanted to send a message of contempt, and he only relented when people convinced him that the political cost wasn’t worth it.

The thing is, all the messages he wants to send about people who haven’t sucked up to him are of contempt when they’re not just plain, sheer hate. The idea of actually honoring someone else — anyone else — offends him because in his mind, no one but himself deserves honors and praise. That even goes for his lackeys and cohorts; haven’t you noticed how often his praise of one of them is barbed in some way? — full of barely concealed condescension at best, and even less well concealed hostility at worst.
