Good Morning, Everyone ???
Betty Cracker
Hope is a good thing — maybe the best thing. (Wasn’t that a line in “Shawshank Redemption,” one of a handful of movies that is better than the book on which it was based?) In any case, thanks for a morning thread that is chock-full of hope! :)
Speaking of which, this old dog is trying to learn a new trick: drinking my coffee black. I first became addicted to coffee as a child by swiping my mother’s morning cuppa joe every time she set a mug on a table and turned her back. Mom drank her cream and sugar with a little coffee, and for a long time, I did too. I gave up the sugar several years back to be more virtuous.
Now I’m giving up the splash of half-and-half on a trial basis, mostly for the convenience. I’m forever running out of it, and now that I live in a howling wilderness, I can’t just run to the corner store for another carton. We’ll see how it goes.

@Betty Cracker: I gave up artificial sweeteners about a month ago. I don’t feel any different but I do see how much sweeter that stuff is than the little bit of sugar I’m putting in my coffee.
Betty Cracker
@raven: Poor guy! Our elderly boxer Daisy is still recovering from the weekend house party. She followed people up and down the stairs dozens of times per day, and it wore her out.
@WereBear: Agreed — it’s grotesque.
Betty Cracker
@Raven: I never could abide artificial sweeteners of any kind. You’d think, given the ginormous payday that awaits the person who finally creates an artificial sweetener that tastes exactly like sugar and behaves like it in recipes, such a product would have been invented ages ago. Sadly nah. One of the presidential contenders should make a fake sugar “moon shot” a campaign goal. Millions would stampede to her banner!

@WereBear: Don’t let him know I told you this, but the Spousal Unit keeps a little emergency backup can of dulce de leche to use in his morning tea if he runs out of half-and-half. Since he usually adds 7 or 8 packets of aspartame, the sweetness doesn’t spoil it for him…

Did any of y’all see the Sanders town hall on CNN last night? We didn’t watch it, but I’ve seen a couple of clips on Twitter today. This one about the tax returns, lord help us…
Given that House Democrats are making Trump’s tax returns a centerpiece of their oversight objectives, it’s flat-out unacceptable for a Democratic primary candidate to withhold his or her returns. Seriously, the DNC should tell Sanders to cough them up by April 15th or hit the road, Jack.

This is about the Sanders share of primary the vote that came from conservative Democrats, Republicans and Independents.
Nate Silver calls them “Never Hillary” voters, and they are- they didn’t vote for her in the primary or the general, but they’re not liberal. He wonders whether they go to a moderate this time (Klobachur, or one of the governors). Since there was only one alternative to Clinton, Sanders ended up with the people both Left of Clinton and Right of Clinton. Do they stick with Sanders if there’s one or more genuine moderates in the race?

@Anne Laurie: Will look out for that. When I first saw the above clip, I wondered if I was watching a rerun of a 2016 clip — same hand-waving excuses, same vague “Jane is handling it” cop-out.
FTR, I think Sanders hides his tax returns because they show his last run opened up the money spigots early in the 2016 primary for himself and his wife and made them millionaires, which is so very off-brand. I also noticed that he dropped the word “millionaires” from his standard stump speech decrying the influence of “millionaires and billionaires” on politics.
Kay
Sanders bragged about his share of the Independent and crossover Republican vote in the primary, with the assumption that those people had been convinced to go Left of Clinton. But many of them were more conservative than Clinton, not less. The Republican cross over voters definitely were and Sanders share of them increased after it became clear Trump was the GOP nominee. Essentially there were “Never Trump AND Never Hillary” Independents or Republicans. If there’s a genuine moderate Democrat in the race (and there is, and there will be others) don’t they go with the moderate?

@Betty Cracker:
I did the same 40 years ago, eliminating the sugar first, as you did. That part was easy; just keep reducing until it tastes better without it. The only way to stop taking cream was to go cold turkey. I always hated milk in coffee (other than cafe au lait). It took about a year before I enjoyed an unaccompanied cup of black coffee as much as I had one with cream. However, drinking black coffee comes with these two ancillary benefits:
1. Black coffee is far superior as a counterpoint to something sweet, like the perfect pairing of wine and cheese.
2. The waiter can refill your cup without messing up your mix.
Raven
@Dorothy A. Winsor: “A blanket party is a form of corporal punishment or hazing conducted within a peer group, most frequently within the military or military academies. The victim (usually asleep in bed) is restrained by having a blanket flung over him and held down, while other members of the group strike the victim repeatedly with improvised flails, most often a sock or bath towel containing something solid, such as a bar of soap, or another rolled up sock. Other weapons which could be used were entrenching tools or a bunk adapter (a piece of pipe used to connect a bunk bed to another). Blows to the head were avoided, as these would likely be both fatal and leave injuries visible to authorities.
Kitchen scrub brushes were sometimes used, although these were more often employed during “G.I. scrubs” for soldiers with poor personal hygiene.”

@Kay: Dan Lipinski’s district went for Sanders in the primary. He’s a conservative anti-abortion Dem. When Marie Newman, a progressive endorsed by Sanders, ran to unseat him, she won the suburban areas that went for Hillary while he won the urban areas that had voted for Sanders. He beat her using Bernie’s voters. So yes, what you’re describing is a thing in my area. Silver suggests misogyny but it’s impossible to measure so he stays away from it in general. It is a good question, though. Bernie benefited from the Never Hillary vote and it was meaningful in +/- 7 of his primary wins. There’s no Never Hillary vote anymore. Now there will be viable moderates to the Right of him. There goes his Right flank, the people who were supposedly convinced to become liberal go back to being what they are- Right of center in the Democratic Party.
For our purposes (beating Trump) it doesn’t matter that much- we don’t support Bernie anyway and all it means is more slice and dice of the primary electorate and a harder job for all of them in the primary.

I suspect there are millions of voters like this fellow (30-something white dude, but I’ve heard similar babble from white folks of both sexes and all ages) who are giving themselves an out with this anti-PC garbage. The worse case for Lefty Bernie supporters is this- Bernie wins primary but loses the general. Democrats lurch back Right and people like Bloomberg say “I told you so”.
This is a big bet for them. They think they will end up with a Warren Democratic Party if Bernie loses the general but it’s more likely they end up with a Bloomberg Democratic Party. The whole thing rides on one man. If they were even hedging a little with Warren as a kind of diversifier on the liberal side but they’re not. I think Bernie pulls from Warren.
With Clinton/Trump they didn’t risk their “movement”. They could NOT vote for Clinton in the general and get Trump and that’s fine- they’re not Democrats anyway. This is the whole thing.

I agree with them on one thing. Rape is a crime. Colleges and universities shouldn’t be setting up boards with questionable process protections to adjudicate it. There’s the school code and then there’s a criminal code. If it’s veering outside their jurisdiction they need to remain in their lane. They can impose any sanctions they want inside their own code but they can’t label these people as rapists without a criminal conviction.
K-12 schools do this. If I get a school case I FIRST look at the school code- “handbook” (locally) then the Ohio code section that governs schools. That governs and that’s what we’ll be using. Suspension, expulsion, can’t participate in sports, must be provided alternate instruction, etc. But that’s much broader than the juvenile code. If it reaches “could be charged by a juvenile prosecutor” then the school’s out of it and all the process protections start. You can’t say “we judged him guilty of assault” without criminal charges. He’s guilty ONLY under the school rules.

@plato: For actually winning, it won’t count until the National Popular Vote Compact goes over the top. Trump could well be reelected with an even more extreme popular-vote minority, if we can’t flip some of those Obama-to-Trump states.
I do wonder what happens to the politics of this country if it just becomes the new normal that Republican Presidents regularly get elected 3 million, 5 million, 10 million down in the popular vote. As long as Democrats are the Lawful Party and Republicans hold the levers, and if something like the NPVC gets killed in the courts, they won’t be able to push back effectively; but at some point the crisis of legitimacy would just become too extreme, if it’s not already.
Betty Cracker
@rikyrah: Warren is tons better, but I don’t think she’ll win either, and Sanders’ entry into the race will be a factor in her loss. If Team Sanders really gave a shit about the “revolution,” he would have stayed out and backed Warren. Maybe that’s unfair. It’s possible they really-really-really believe only he can win. They’re wrong, but it’s possible they’re sincere.
Anyhoo, my husband and I were speculating last night, and I told him if I were a betting woman, I’d put my money on Harris winning the nomination and then clobbering Trump in the general. That’s an outcome that pleases me, though on substance so far, I prefer Warren.

@Betty Cracker: Ah, you drink half and half.
I put 2% milk in my coffee, and what I do is buy a quart, or whatever, and freeze at least half of it in smallish (pint-sized?) glass containers. Schweppes or Canada Dry individual tonic water bottles are great; so are jelly jar glass containers. Just make sure to leave enough room for expansion as the liquid freezes. That way the milk stays fresh, since I pretty much just use it in morning coffee, and I can pull out a frozen container when I run out. Which is a boon when one returns from being away and — forgot to get milk!
You can buy shelf stable milk too. In Germany and Spain, most of the milk is shelf stable; they don’t seem to buy as much of the refrigerated version. It’s delicious. I wish we did that here, and guess we only do not because of the cold milk lobby.
Think of how easy it would be to store milk for hurricanes and power outages, etc. You could deal with a smaller refrigerator too, as they do overseas.
I find European products to be much purer and healthier, for the most part, and less waste in packaging, etc.

@Betty Cracker: I read recently that Wilmer and Warren were the only 2 DEMs who already have unfavorables above 50%, which gives them a steep hill to climb right at the start. I love Warren but she probably can’t win if that holds true.

I grew up in an area with hard water (came out funny colored from the tap), so I dislike the taste of water. The only thing I find that is low cal I can handle is diet tonic water (Polar brand preferred) with fresh lime and a dash of unsweetened cranberry juice. Y’all in Massachusetts are lucky to have Polar, which makes the best mixers and diet soft drinks. Orange Dry Diet in particular. When we go to the only store nearby which carries it (and not regularly), we will clean the shelf. Polar also makes grapefruit soda for us grapefruit addicts.

@OzarkHillbilly: No, seriously using the term “garden variety” to describe a crime sends multiple messages, (1) financial fraud is not a real crime; and (2) everyone does it or knows someone who does it — so let’s just slap the defendant on the wrist and we can all go back to playing golf or whatever we do in our spare time. Do you know how many nonviolent drug offenders these two judges have had to sentence and wreak havoc on them and their families? This was an incredibly stupid thing to say.

Lindsey Graham finds a new place for the Russia scandal goalposts
02/26/19 10:00 AM—UPDATED 02/26/19 10:12 AM
By Steve Benen
As a rule, no one is better at moving the Russia scandal goalposts than Rudy Giuliani. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), however, may be giving him a run for his money.
The trouble is, “collusion” is a political term, which means different things to different people. What would the GOP senator have to see in order to abandon the president whose water he’s carried for two years? He shared an extraordinary perspective with the New York Times.
…Trump, he insisted, knew where he stood on the special counsel’s Russia investigation.
Wait, that’s where the lines are now drawn? We’ve arrived at the point at which “collusion” is defined as campaign officials sitting down with Russian intelligence operatives to directly coordinate the manipulation of election results?

………….
That Lasted Long: Bernie Sanders and Supporters Abandon All Pretense of Civility
Remember when 72 whole hours ago Bernie Sanders sent an email to his fans instructing them to “engage respectfully” with other Democrats (well, Democrats, since Bernie is not one)? In that message, he also warned his supporters not to talk about “past grievances.” He even got a line in about bullying
Let it be noted that I predicted as soon as the story of this email came out that it was a pathetic, weak CYA move on the part of Bernie Sanders so that he would have plausible deniability when his backers inevitably chose to be their dickish selves.
Unsurprisingly, I was correct. Last night, both Sanders and his former campaign staff happily trampled all over his fake appeal to civility.
At the CNN town hall, Sanders were alternatively ignorant, arrogant, and belligerent. He chastised a woman for challenging him on his own words about his 2016 campaign’s culture of sexual violence that he said he didn’t have time to pay attention to because he was a “little busy.” He appeared not to know what reparations even meant. And he took an early, sore-loser shot at the Democratic party, whining that he was treated unfairly in 2016.
In the mean time, Michael Briggs, the mouthpiece – I mean spokesman – for Sanders’ 2016 campaign on Monday called former Hillary Clinton staffers “total ingrates” and “the biggest assholes in American politics.” What prompted such scathing, unadulterated hatred? Former Clinton staffers let out of the bag the secret Bernie and his man-of-the-people image crafters desperately wanted to keep: Sanders loves himself some private jet time.

No, it’s not. To the FOX audience, both mean ‘blacks are lazy.’ FOX relentlessly beats the drum that the social safety net exists because blacks don’t want to work, and if they would just work hard like white people they wouldn’t need it. Sometimes they use code words, sometimes they say it flat-out. Ben Carson’s political career exists because he would go on FOX and say it directly and undisguised, so the FOX audience could assure themselves it can’t be racism, because a black person also says it’s true. Plus, Carson IS successful, which is proof! They also particularly love the phrase ‘culture of dependency.’

I don’t think Americans love “children”. There’s literally nothing in our history to indicate we “love” them. We like a romanticized idea of them, but real ones? Not so much. To whom did Manafort send that letter and why is it relevant to this investigation now, so much so that the recipient has to be redacted? Who could it be? Some of the usual suspects, like Trump (who visited the Soviet Union in 1987) or someone completely outside our consideration at the moment. Kissinger?
