Excellent thinkpiece from Dahlia Lithwick at Slate — “Prepare for Mueller to Ghost”:
The United States has a collective action problem. Not just the most obvious one, of high-ranking members of the Donald Trump administration persistently failing to act while in office and then publishing I-told-you-so memoirs or sniggering onstage at public fora about the president’s unfitness. No, the problem is also at the most micro level, and at sweeping constitutional levels as well. The prevailing ethos seems to be that so long as there is somebody else out there who is capable of Doing Something, the rest of us are free to desist. And for the most part, the person deemed to be Doing Something is Robert Mueller.
Given reports that the Mueller investigation might come to a close any day now, we may soon find ourselves in the middle of the acid test of this proposition. There’s a lingering perception that once Mueller delivers his report, the Trump era will end in a cloud of white smoke and glitter. It’s a nice fantasy—the one in which Mueller, armed with Truth and Fact, finishes off the Trump presidency with a ride through the Capitol on a white unicorn, scattering indictments and the seeds of impeachment, in a conclusive and irrefutable wrapup of the two-year probe.
It is also profoundly unlikely to actually happen that way. As one observer after another has reminded us, this is not necessarily Mueller’s call, and it’s not necessarily Mueller’s mandate. It’s also, perhaps most importantly, not necessarily Mueller’s style. At every turn, Mueller has shown us who he is, and that would be the antithesis of the Trump-style reality show protagonist. He’s been almost impossible to spot and is decidedly uninterested in the spotlight. Whenever he has faced the choice between grandstanding and dutiful drudgery, he’s opted for the latter. His public filings tend to be understated. His signature appears on only a few…
If any one man singlehandedly undermines the Great Man theory of American history, it might by definition be the guy who wants no attention, credit, fortune, or fame from this gig. He may also be the only powerful person in Washington, D.C., who has no plans to parlay his government service into a cable news perch, a cookbook, or to launch a line of handbags. It would not surprise me if Mueller did the Muellerist move of all time, which would be to drop a minimalist report on Bill Barr and then ghost…
We want Mueller to be both the guy who knows everything and the guy who does everything. It obviates anyone else from needing to know what we already know and do what needs doing. But going into the next few fateful days, my sense is that we might want to stop investing too much hope in great men, and superheroes, and saviors. Instead, we should remember that it is our job to insist that we, and our public officials, must be the Muellers we hope to see in the world.
For example, there’s this —

Is that Ghosting like in a Dickensian sense? I can live with that as, if I recall correctly, in the book, people only show up for Scrooge’s funeral if lunch is provided. If would have to be a pretty fine lunch to show for Trump’s funeral; ain’t no one showing up for Big Mac’s.

I’m still hoping he’s dragged off in cuffs the second he isn’t President. CNN (online) had some big article the other day (which I didn’t read) about what happens if Trump doesn’t accept election results if he loses; I didn’t read it, as I find it a rather preposterous situation, but if his ass is getting indicted the second there is a 46. maybe he tries to play games (haven’t a clue what that would be and, again, find it preposterous).

One other thing about Mueller– he gets a level of loyalty that Trump can only fantasize about. Trump demands strenuous and vocal loyalty from his minions, Mueller actually gets it. Mueller orders that there will be no leaks and no anonymous informants and, wonder to behold, there are no leaks and there are no anonymous informants. I’d guess that Trump would dearly love to have a source of information about what’s going on inside the Special Counsel’s office. But it just isn’t happening.

What Mueller may be doing is laying out a roadmap for various local and state prosecutors to end run a possible mass pardoning of Trump’s criminal regime. During Whitaker’s testimony on Capitol Hill, he let this little gem drop:
https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4779081/whitaker-pardons
Please note that Whitaker pauses forever before answering a direct question, and can never raise his eyes up to Ms. Escobar’s. BTW – I’m dying to play poker with this idiot. All the tells!
And yes, I fully expect Mueller will ‘ghost’ after he completes his assignment. It’s his nature.
The thrust of the article is spot on. We, the American people, need to be Mueller. Everyday.
In other news… here’s a pretty good article on the… ahem, Justice Democrats. Please don’t give them a goddamn dime.
https://medium.com/@investigator_21314/are-the-justice-democrats-a-money-scam-to-defraud-progressives-63abbcf71be2
The ‘hit’ job on Harris made sense (from Bernie’s perspective), as she’s likely to emerge from this field a major contender. But the ‘attack’ on Feinstein was pure political payback. JD backed a completely unknown candidate, Alison Hartson (who wasn’t even political until she became a Democrat to vote for Bernie). Apparently, Cenk Uygur (before his ouster from JD) recruited her and backed her run. Instead of derailing Feinstein’s run, it peeled away votes from Kevin de Leon’s campaign. He is CA Senate President, and has worked his butt off for single-payer in that state. Some progressives blame the JD for Leon’s loosing to Feinstein.
I am a big fan of AOC. I think she is doing a lot of good documenting the institutionalized corruption in our nation’s capital. And I applaud her efforts so far. But whatever she thinks she gained by ‘humiliating’ Feinstein, I would argue that it will pass quickly, but Feinstein will remain. And if AOC really wants to get her New Green Deal turned into law, this was a tragic misstep.
I think what happened might have been a situation where the right hand doesn’t know what the left is doing, but AOC should understand that it all washes back up on her doorstep.
And all of this shit was timed a little too closely with Sanders’ announcement he was running. If all Sanders’ and his people do is stage attacks on other Democratic candidates, who do you think those ex-candidates will rally around when it comes down to the wire.
And I am at wit’s end with his band of misogynist ‘Bernie Bros’ who are staging Twitter attacks on anyone (usually female) who dares to challenge them. THIS MUST STOP, BERNIE!!!

I think that the Mueller Report will be a whole lot of nothing. It will not provide enough information to result in Trump’s impeachment, nor result in big indictment of anyone else.
HOWEVER, indictments of Jr and Young Jared would be huge, even without an indictment of the Orange Menace. This would anger the ever loving orange crap out of Trump, and remove two of the people he most depends on. Trump would go wild on Twitter. He would be crazier than a wounded buffalo. Angry and distracted Trump might be much more vulnerable politically.
Kent
No matter what is in the Mueller report, he is not going to save us. It is all going to come down to 2020 whch is coming at us at light speed. That is for all the marbles and the future of the country. Everything comes down to ejecting the occupant from the White House in 2020. If the Mueller report helps win in 2020 then great. If not, then we move on.
The rest of this stuff? Public Option vs Medicare for All vs Single Payer? It is all just pissing in the wind without taking the White House and Senate in 2020 and abandoning the filibuster. Which is going to be tougher than drawing an inside straight.

THIS
Frankly having worked for a short spell on Capitol Hill (as committee staff not personal staff) I think the most likely scenario is that AOC is currently up to her eyeballs in bigger issues related to staffing, fundraising, committee work, and just getting up to speed with the overwhelming amount of work and issues and demands that are on a typical Congresswoman’s plate. The idea that she has time to personally meet with low level justice democrat twerps to plan video hit jobs is laughable. Especially because you can’t plan that sort of thing anyway. No one could know in advance whether or not they were even going to get any footage of Feinstein much less stuff that they could deceptively edit.
That said, I think she is smart enough to understand that if she wants to have a career as an effective legislator for her constitutents she is going to have to work with potential allies and not alienate them. If she wants to be the next Wilmer and spend 40 years in Congress doing nothing but grandstanding then that’s different.

Clinton basically did her best to ignore Sanders during the 2016 primary and mainly focused on the general election. Perhaps under the mistaken notion that most of the Sanders crew would turn around and support her in the same way that her 2008 supporters came around to support Obama.
I don’t think any of the leading 2020 candidates are going to make that mistake. They will need to get out there, take the gloves off, and go after Sanders full bore in the primaries. He has never had an actual competitive race in which he has been challenged full force. Not ever in VT senate races. And not in 2016. It will be interesting to see how he responds when all the ridiculous misogyny in his campaign gets called and thrown back in his face.

I remember all that. I was working at B.U., typing biology exams for the department. Since I sat there typing all day, one of the grad students set up a little black and white television on my desk and asked me to keep him posted. Those hearings did drone on. I remember it was a Friday afternoon, maybe around 2:30pm, when Alexander Butterfield was testifying. As soon as he said (something like), “Yes, Senator, that is what I said. Lithwick should note that if Mueller can crank out an 800-page sentencing recommendation for one of the convicted conspirators, it seems doubtful that the final report on this far-reaching mess is going to qualify for “minimalist”.
