I really wish this had happened back in 2016 when the president’s supporters were sending death threats to Jewish reporters. https://t.co/9epROftO2C
— Julia Ioffe (@juliaioffe) February 13, 2019
I found @IlhanMN’s tweets to be offensive and anti-Semitic. But, unlike the men mentioned above, she apologized—instead of engaging in hypocritical grandstanding.
— Julia Ioffe (@juliaioffe) February 13, 2019
And let’s not pretend that the GOP hasn’t noticed the Rep. Ilhan is not only Muslim, but an actual refugee, and from Africa at that. Hating on her gives their Base a triple-hit of bigotry dopamine.
Further, good point from Paul Waldman, in the Washington Post, “The real reason for the controversy over Ilhan Omar’s tweets”:
… We all know Trump is a bigot who is never constrained by shame from such displays of hypocrisy. Omar apologized for the tweets, as she should have, but what’s most important about this episode is the fury that came down on her head so quickly — from both Republicans and Democrats.
It should be noted that Omar wasn’t really accurate in describing support in Congress for current Israeli policy as being a result of money from AIPAC. First, AIPAC doesn’t directly give donations, though it has long used its ability to direct donations to help its friends and punish its enemies. But as Ed Kilgore noted for New York magazine, these days, it is the Christian right much more than Jews that is driving U.S. policy on Israel; I once described it with only slight hyperbole as a “world of post-Jewish Zionism, where Israel’s most vehement advocates are people who see it mostly as a tool to use in a holy war between Christianity and Islam.”…
But I think what made members of Congress come down on Omar so hard wasn’t just that she was criticizing the relationship between the United States and Israel, or even the unfortunate way she did it. It’s also that she was criticizing Congress itself, and how it treats Israel.
And the reaction proved the point. In Congress, there has been more discussion about Omar’s tweets over the last 48 hours than there has been genuine debate about the United States’ policy vis-a-vis Israel over the last 10 years.
There are things we might ask if we actually had such a debate, about whether the Israeli government should be punished for its aggressive settlement policy, whether it actually needs the billions of dollars in military aid we send them each year, or even what the United States gets out of this alliance in a post-Cold War world. There are a variety of answers one might offer to those questions, but they don’t get asked, at least not in Congress.
And make no mistake, that’s precisely the goal of AIPAC and its allies. The group is not “the Israel lobby” as it is often characterized; it’s the Likud lobby, representing the interests of the Israeli right wing in general, and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in particular. Just as any lobby, it achieves its greatest success when it moves questions related to its interests outside the realm of debate, to a point in which any questioning of the status quo is considered so radical that it need not even be considered.This isn’t unique to AIPAC; lots of lobbies do it. For years, the NRA’s great success was not in defeating gun control legislation but in making sure no such legislation was even considered, so great was the group’s power assumed to be…
Even the Grey Lady is beginning to catch on to the GOP con here:
Soros, globalists, Jewish money — Trump is a practiced trafficker in the same kinds of anti-Semitic stereotypes he demanded that Ilhan Omar resign over. https://t.co/mceaJKeYg7

I found our hotel for the Family London trip.
It’s a Premier Inn Hotel, much like the Hub, Premier Inn Hotel I stayed in when I traveled solo, except this is the regular hotel, and not the bare bones “Hub” version. It’s still just a bed and a bathroom, but they offer “bigger” rooms, with King size beds in the bigger rooms and a few more amenities.
Location: On one side, St Paul’s Catheral on the other side, Tate Modern. Near enough to Thames and Covent Garden and it’s 3-7 mins from 2 Underground stations, and there is at least 200 restauarnts within 0.5 miles of the hotel!
I was able to book 2 rooms total a little bit over the budget we set, (but I’m paying for my nephew, so it’s still good).
Oh and it’s got great reviews on Trip Advisor and it!

@plato: What do I need to tell you that isn’t clearly stated in Jackson’s ruling?
I’m sure as hell not going to argue with your statement the Mueller and his team are highly professional, but your claim that Jackson just took Manafort’s word at face value on 2 of the 5 topics seems odd considering that the outcome wouldn’t change. Mueller isn’t bound by the plea agreement. There’s nothing to suggest she believes Manafort, and you know as well as I do that she can’t write a ruling that says, “Well, he lied about everything else, so he must be lying about these other things, too.”
However you want to characterize what is happening, I think you would agree with me that it’s much better for Jackson to be extremely careful on her rulings than for something to be overturned on appeal. The federal courts are definitely not stacked in our favor right now, and the Bart O’Kavanaughs of the world only need a small excuse to overturn a ruling in Mueller’s favor.

British mutton comes from Australia, New Zealand and Argentina these days, under EU Agreements.
Current British Brexit Emergency Planning has rationing adults to 1275 calories a day, 840 for children, and there is storage capacity for 119 days.

@Jay:
Which is very frustrating for British shepherds. They push people to “buy British” but it costs more. Maybe after Brexit it won’t. They also depend on help from EU countries during shearing season so who knows how that will work.

@Frankensteinbeck: What the [family blog] right does Trump have to accept or reject her apology. Is he a hired agent for Israel and, thus, able to speak for its government? Is he a representative of the Jewish People because his daughter joined the tribe and married one of them? I’m already furious at those bought and paid for Representatives and Senators who support Israel over America’s national interests and are currently trying to subvert the Constitution with their anti-BDS bill. I normally don’t give much of a [expletive deleted] about Trumps misfeasances, but this is really despicable.

@Yarrow:
At the peak of the German UBoat’s “Happy Time”, Britain was one convoy away from starvation rationing being enacted. Since the Clearances and the Industrial Revolution, Britain has always been utterly reliant on imported food, taken from the tables of the Irish and Indians, along with trade deals with New Zealand, Canada and Australia for imports that subsidized British farmers.
That all went away after WWII. WWII Food rationing continued in Britain until it joined the EEC. British mutton has been “uncompeditive” since then.
Funny thing, Industrial farming practices and bad land management has destroyed more farmland in Britain than urbanization. 20% of the Midlands topsoil wound up at sea in the 1998 floods, because after clearing the hilltops of forest and scrub, they plowed furrows straight up hill, to plant corn, for ethanol.
Even switching to feedlot operations left British Mutton uncompeditive and when the EU signed trade agreements with Australia, New Zealand and Argentina, even more so. Britain was happy to sign on at the time for the export opportunities and the import opportunities for metals, timber, coal, etc.
As for sheep shearing, Shearing is a seasonable job that the Shearer backfills the rest of the year with other work on the sheep farms. When machinery and amalgamation take away those jobs, people quit shearing. So you have to import shearers from other sheep raising countries who have different shearing seasons, which the UK did under the Free Movement of Labour rules of the EU.

And they key takeaway is that Manifort has blown up his Cooperation Agreement, his Sentencing Agreement and will be resentenced.

@Laura Too: I think she’s had some rough-and-tumble in Minnesota. The old canard about how she was married to her brother as part of an immigration scam has been resurrected. They’ve only been circulating that one since 2016, I think, but seriously? The state of Minnesota and the feds are so stupid they would let brother and sister marry and stay married for what, 8 years, without any consequences whatsoever?
