Folks, I’m working my way through backlogged submissions for the next couple of weeks, and we’re hitting the ground running today! Feel free to submit new stuff, and I may run some of it, but for at least a week or so, I’ve got some stuff to publish.
Today, we’re off to San Diego! For a number of years in the early oughts, I had to attend an internal company conference in san Diego and it was right about this time. Did I complain that I would fly out Saturday morning at 7 am?
Heck no – I arrived in San Diego by 11:30 local time, fully rested after a cross-continental snooze, and ready to board my friends’ rental sailboat for an afternoon of good times, good company, and good cheer. Then Sunday, it was 7:30 AM conference beginning, attendance mandatory. I still dream of those gorgeous sunsets whenever I shiver in these dark days of winter. And I’m so much happier at home instead of on the road; my family and cats are what life is about!
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Today, pictures from valued commenter ?BillinGlendaleCA.
After our visit to the Mission in San Diego, we headed to a spot that my fellow photographer had shot before in La Jolla. After about a half hour drive though the winding streets of La Jolla, on the lookout for the roving bands of MS-13 we arrived at the beach. There was no parking by the beach so we had to park a very short block away. I shot from one location, while my fellow photographer moved around to several different spots.

Once we got out of the car and retrieved our camera equipment, I noticed that there was a row of palm trees that I though would make a great shot. It’s a visual color shot, but I processed it to darken the skies and bring out the high clouds.

Once we walked down to the road the runs along the beach, I shot this pic(actually 2, one IR and one visual color). The IR really accentuates the clouds and brings out the color in the ice plant along the cliff.

I shot this just after setting up my tripod and camera on a rock overlooking the beach. The sun hasn’t begun to actually set and the reflection on the ocean is quite stunning.

Now the sun is beginning to set. This is shot is shot at a higher zoom. The reflection on the water is not as prominent, but the reflection off the dark sand and the bottom of the shot is.

The sun has almost completely set and the fading light is splashed all across the water and the wet sand. This was shot at a wide angle(16mm).
Thank you so much ?BillinGlendaleCA, do send us more when you can.

Still love the palm trees. Beautiful sunset pictures too.
JPL
What a beautiful sunset.

Great Golden Hour photos!
Thanks Bill, I learn something every time you shoot and post!
HinTN
The definition in the water itself in that “not quite sunset” shot is spectacular.
waratah
The not quite sunset is great photo, I really love sunsets.
Thank you Bill.

We lived there in the early 60’s when my old man was at Amphib School at Coronado. We’d take what we called “famous ancient” hikes on that beach and find all kinds of cool stuff!

I’ve mentioned this before, but the submission form is broken, at least for me. I enter my nym and e-mail, as I do nearly every time I comment, and it comes back with “Your nym/email combination could not be verified.” Thinking it might be the spaces, I tried enclosing the nym in quotes, still no go. I e-mailed Alain using the contact form, and nothing.

@Mary G: I like that one too, it was just a shot where I looked up and thought “that might be interesting”.
@JPL: Thanks, it was a pretty good spot, my friend had shot there before.
@J R in WV: Thanks, I’m always happy to answer any questions about how I shot or processed the pics.

@HinTN: Thanks, I tried to bring out the whites in the surf in that one.
@waratah: I like sunsets too and shoot quite a few of them from here. This is the first time I’ve shot them from the beach in quite a while.
@Raven: It was a good spot, I’d actually wanted to shoot the sunset at the old Pt. Loma lighthouse; maybe next time.

@Gin & Tonic: Sorry I missed that. I’m sure it’s the ampersand. I’ll get it solved.

@Alain the site fixer: Thanks.

@Alain the site fixer: You never ran parts 2 and 3 of my China pictures from about 6 months ago. Are they still in the hopper?

Beautiful, as always. I’m not much of a fan of IR pics, but in the one here I love the way the palm tree shares color with manmade structures as well as with the ice plant — the thread of pink that runs from upper right to lower left, and the frosty greens. And, although there is clearly daylight, the sea and the sky are all dark and moody — it’s mesmerizing!

@stinger: What I’m doing with IR is taking the pic with the IR camera and shooting a visual shot at the same time and adding the color from the visual to the IR. It adds some color back into the pic and warms up the rather cold IR.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Ah, that explains why I love your IR shots so much. Also that darkened sky on the first pic with the palm trees.
Alain the site fixer
@Jerzy Russian: I think so. I’ll take a look later. I’m sorry, thought I did!
