Holy sh!t. Senator Bennet raised his voice. Last person I’d ever expect that from…I could have sworn his photo was next to the definition of Milquetoast in Merriam’s. I guess I need to apologize to him.
This MOFO seems to be what pushed him over the edge:

I've never seen the normally mild-mannered Michael Bennet this angry. He's just ripping into the shutdown, the Freedom Caucus etc on the Senate floor.
— Steven Dennis (@StevenTDennis) January 24, 2019
We really are off the map.
Gelfling 545
Cruz has got some nerve talking about shut downs. I watched the whole thing. If Cruz had a conscience ( spoiler: he doesn’t) he’d have crawled out of there and would never show his face again.
BlueDWarrior
The most unremarked upon thing regarding the Trump era might be the increasing “radicalization” of normally milquetoast Democrats.
burnspbesq
Cool.
Would be even cooler if he had caned Cruz, but this is so much better than we usually get that I will gladly take it.
Adam L Silverman
My favorite was when he called out the Hastert Rule.
Gelfling 545
By the way, is Cruz wearing a light gray suit? Very unseemly. Not senatorial. Tsk.
dmsilev
Could we at least have a Sense of the Senate vote that Ted Cruz is a fuckwit who needs to repeatedly slapped in the face with a large dead fish?
I feel that there would be a strongly bipartisan majority in favor of that measure.
azelie
I think if there is ever a movie made about this whole thing, Bill Murray is going to need to play Senator Bennet.
TaMara (HFG)
@Adam L Silverman: Yes, that was a thing of beauty.

If this drags on long enough, I expect someone may very well reenact Brooks vs Sumner with Senator Cruz as Sumner. And I’m not completely sure the person standing in for Brooks will be a Democrat.

@Gelfling 545: Most likely with tan shoes.
Elizabelle
This is great. Thank you for putting this up.
Shrill! And goddamned honest. Name names.
Adam L Silverman
@TaMara (HFG): I wish he could have brought himself to have phrased it as “a rule named for someone in prison for child molestation” instead of just “in prison”. But you take what you can get.
TaMara (HFG)
@Adam L Silverman: I’d be okay with that. Or McConnell. I’m not picky.
Baud
Looks like I’ll have to update my shrill list.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Oh dear. Mr DAW has Chuck Todd on and Schumer and McConnell have been negotiating and might issue a statement at any moment. You didn’t give away anything vital, did you, Chuck?
Adam L Silverman
I look forward to Republican members of Congress, elected and appointed Republican officials at the state and local level, and conservative pundits and think tankers saying “well, you’ve got us” in January 2021, when the newly inaugurated Democratic president issuing one of these regarding climate change forcing the Green New Deal, one regarding income inequality repealing all the tax cuts since the 1960s, one declaring that Justice Gorsuch, as well as all the Federal district and appellate court justices who are were confirmed because McConnell refused to allow confirmation of Obama’s nominees, all received stolen goods when they were confirmed and sworn in on the Supreme and other Federal courts, and therefore increasing the size of them and filling those appointments without the Senate’s advise and consent, and one regarding mass shootings and school shootings radically reinterpreting the 2nd Amendment.
Sorry forgot to include the embed:

@TaMara (HFG): I would prefer McConnell. Senatortise has a backpfeifengesicht.

Jackals: if anyone would like to put up a message for Schlemazel, who is in comfort care with end stage cancer, you can always leave a message on John Cole’s original post. Niece Laura checks in from time to time there.
I put this morning’s messages on that thread; apologies if I missed any.
Adam or TaMara: it would be great if we could have a morning post of greetings to Schlemazel, so it’s easy for niece Laura to find. But the dedicated thread with the announcement of his hospitalization is good too.
Now, back to listening to Senator Bennett’s speech. The internet gave out for a few.

What’s the count of this threat coming out? Three? Four? I’ve lost count. It’s empty. A clarification about Bennett’s comments about Cruz being in favor of Texas landowners getting their land seized for a wall: Cruz doesn’t give a shit about ranchers, farmers, and landowners on the border because the Lower Rio Grande Valley and trans-Pecos Texas are always true-blue areas. He’s not losing any voters, so he thinks fuck those Texans.

@Citizen_X: It’s telling to compare Cruz’s comments with Cornyn’s. Cruz is all in for building the wall, etc. Cornyn, who just happens to be up for reelection in 2020, is not at all for building the wall with money taken from Hurricane Harvey victims in a different part of the state.

Thanks for posting this…I think I’ve watched it at least 3 times. Intellectually I get Bennet’s “work across the aisle” baloney…in a perfect world. But we ain’t there and we need action and emotion to move people off their behinds.
Im not sure I see him as president, but after 2016, I’d take him. As a relatively new CO resident, I’ve noticed he does what Tammy Baldwin does in WI: in person town halls, all over the state, even in areas they didn’t win. They get out of the bubble and don’t run scared from their constituents.

@plato: They won’t. Once it gets to the Supreme Court it will be upheld. @debbie: No congress is ever going to do that, control of the purse is the power of Congress.

@Baud: Eminent domain only affects a small number of voters. Taking away Harvey money to pay for the wall affects a lot more people in a completely different area of the state. Doing that makes The Wall real for the Harvey victims. It’s politically stupid and it’s unpopular with voters.
Edit: Should also add that The Wall was still more of a campaign promise and not a real thing in the way people looked at it, even as recently as November. Shutting down the government for this long because of The Wall has made it much less popular, even in Texas.

It’s so discouraging. What makes me want to set things on fire though is when they either play the religion/morality card or talk about the biggest assholes as being personally upstanding people.
Our government was created to be the alternative to a monarchy. When the Republicans talk about the government being the enemy or dangerous or wanting to make it so small they can drown it in a bathtub shouldn’t they tell us what their alternative is?
And the idiots who believe this shit love the idea of small government staying the fuck out of their lives and letting them hold onto more of their precious money- until their fucking town burns down or a tornado flattens their home or a hurricane destroys their ocean front property or their kid ends up in the hospital with E. coli after eating a fucking overpriced Caesar salad. The wealthy people who think they would be immune from the consequences of a collapse of government fancy themselves a lot wealthier than they are. Yeah the Koch brothers, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Jeff Besos, and a handful of other gazillionaires will be fine but the average millionaire is still going to get overrun by disaster.
