Saturday Evening Musical Interlude

This is America… I can’t do this on my own… how did we get in this mess…

National mood, at the intersection of id and money: Uneasy, edgy, not happy.

First flakes of what’s supposed to be our first big storm of the winter just starting to come down. How’s the weather, real or metaphorical, in your area?

Cold, snow, and the wind out of the north is starting to pick up.
Good night to be inside listening to Dire Straits and reading.

The snow is over here. I don’t know how much we got but it’s nothing like what’s expected in the NE. Stay safe and warm, jackals.

After 9.2 inches of rain in 12 days, we are having absolutely glorious weather in SoCal. Clear blue skies, temps in the 70’s, and only very gentle breezes. It’s days like yesterday and today that draws tourists here in the winter.

It’s still raining in southwest Ohio, it doesn’t turn to snow until much later tonight. After that, who knows. The predictions are varying.

I’m looking forward to Monday. Temps will be their coldest yet, in the teens, but the sun will be out! It’s been almost non-stop cloudy and overcast since before Christmas. The gloom is getting to me.

The snowstorm hit NE Ohio and covered us in probably 8-12′ of snow. None of the plow trucks were out that I can see. It just stopped snowing and a couple people are snow blowing their driveways now.

I’ll take any surplus snow here in NW Montana. There are big bare spots under the trees, it hasn’t dropped below 0º yet and only 2 mornings of single digits. What global warming?

We got some snow in Chicago today, maybe six inches, but it was a source of great excitement for Bernadette. This is only her second winter, her first as a full-grown dog, and she loves it. She’s half Bernese and built for winter, with thick furry legs and giant paws. (You can see her in the middle of March on the calendar.) We headed out mid-morning for our favorite dog-friendly neighborhood cafe, in part because the route takes her over one of her most familiar comfort areas and she’s still a touch unsure with snow where she’s supposed to poop. We had an excited frolic and also accomplished our objective. When we got to the brunch spot a musician was singing blues. I wasn’t paying much attention until I heard him singing about how his dog disappeared leaving nothing behind but a patch of yellow snow. It was no doubt a sad song but something about suddenly hearing that made me burst out laughing. It was a fun morning and the rest of the day has been a relaxed one of catching up on laundry, etc. Life is good.

Just rain here, an inch or more, the little ephemeral creek by the house is all waterfalls now, and a big pool where the 3 12 inch culverts go under the driveway, and are somewhat clogged by leaves and sticks. No damage here, hard to tell if other watersheds that may get more rain will have flooding issues.

And the USGS guys in charge of flooding prediction and gauge monitoring on streams and rivers are no longer on duty for this large rain event. Imagine that!!!

The Catholic PR experts have come into work now. Per

In an extended joint statement issued at about 4 p.m. Saturday, the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High said in full:

“We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.

“We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement.”

My translation: we are sorry our students revealed our racism during the big women-must-be-controlled event, and one or two of them whose parents haven’t made large donations will be getting a slap on the wrist.

I went downtown for the Women’s March in DC, and it was quite cold, but there was still a large crowd. For some reason local news was saying 10,000 were expected, and there were at least four or five times that. My friends and I marched but didn’t stay for the rally and speeches afterward, because she had to drive home before the weather turned bad.

Signs were great; I’ll send some photos to On The Road, including ones with the very popular backdrop of the Trump International Hive of Scum and Villainy. Far fewer sustained chants than most marches, probably because there were fewer organized groups to keep them going, but there was one memorable one:

All for one and one for all
End this shutdown, stop this wall!

    Mary G says:

@Mary G: The comments on that article are encouraging, they’re condemning the kids, the school, the chaperones and sharing email addresses for school administrators:

This comment by Eleanor Cat, calling out the media, is freaking awesome:

Calling this “a tense exchange” is disingenuous. We are sick of the proxy terminology used in reporting on racism that attempts to imply “both sides” and to diminish fault. An “exchange” implies that the tension is due to both sides and equal fault on both sides. This is not what the footage shows. It shows boys that chose to engage with and harass a group of peaceful people. It shows a mob of students harassing an elder and those with him.

Please rethink the way in which you attempt to capture and describe an event. Accuracy in reporting is important, particularly when describing harassment, intimidation, and racism. Your reporting is a disservice to truth and journalism. It is a disservice to the public whom you wish to inform. And it is a complete disservice to those who were harassed here and other places in the U.S. People who are regular targets of discrimination, racism, and harassment are tired of this style of rhetoric and reporting as it fails to call the situation what it is.

@Mary G: The Kentucky SOS is concerned for the kids. No mention of the people they demeaned.

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes on Facebook: “In spite of these horrific scenes, I refuse to shame these children. Instead I turn to the adults that are teaching them and those that are silently letting others promote this behavior. We can do better and it starts with better leadership.”

In that case, what action is she proposing to hold parents and supervisors of the boys directly responsible?
Educational pamphlets about good leadership in the teacher’s lounge?

52 overcast and a couple showers in Seattle. Snowdrops are blooming, so is fragrant Sarcoccoca. Lots of buds are swelling on almost every shrub and tree. Its been so mild on the west coast while the middle if the country has looked frigid for weeks. El Nino and climate change…..

I grew up 35 mikes south if Cleveland. We kept a yardstick by the front door to measure the snow. I don’t miss it. We can drive 40 miles to the Cascades to experience many feet of snow from December until all but the icefields and glaciers melt in July.

Keep safe and enjoy the new stuff!

    Steeplejack says:

Just got in from an epic grocery shopping expedition. I was expecting more snow here in NoVA this afternoon and tonight, thanks to the weather-porn ghouls, but when I got up this morning and did my geezer-mandated weather research I saw that it was just going to be cold rain and colder temps. “But don’t go out tomorrow—ice!” Yeah, right, weather ghouls.

So I was able to reshuffle my schedule, get some things done at home and avoid racing out to face angry mobs stocking up on bread and toilet paper. The store was actually a little slow for a late Saturday afternoon. Now the housecat and I are well provisioned for the next week. Even splurged on the way home and got some ribs and brisket from my local barbecue place. Just had one rib and a little brisket with some potato salad. The housecat likes a few little pieces of non-spicy rib meat.

No big plans for the evening. I half-dread looking to see what Trump said in his announcement, and yet I cannot turn away. I hope the Democrats stand firm and don’t let themselves get played. Maybe some reassuring Vera—stern and unswerving in the pursuit of justice—will be on PBS tonight.

    National mood: “Winter in America.”

  45. 45
    Redshift says:

@Mary G: I agree, but at least they know how to word a real apology, not “I apologize if anyone was offended.” Of course, if they want it to be a real apology, in addition to having the right words, it would have to come from those young men and their chaperones.

  46. 46
    WaterGirl says:

@Aleta: Are you certain of that? I would swear there was a tweet in a BJ thread today that showed her whole statement where she held a ton of people responsible, but thought all the blame should not be on the kids themselves.

So far, just rain here in Southwestern PA. Supposed to turn to snow very late tonight. Originally, they were calling for 4-8 inches here thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, but I’m going to guess the local news will have that ratcheted down to 2-4 once the local news comes on shortly. Was supposed to be a few inches this afternoon then turn to rain and ice and then more snow. Got nothing this afternoon and it started raining about an hour ago. Glad I ran out early anyway. Pork loin roast with potatoes, carrots, onions, rosemary and marjoram is in the oven. Green beans we froze from our garden are ready to be sautéed. Got a good, inexpensive Chardonnay on sale. We’re hunkered down.

@Baud: I used to try to ponder a solution to that question– since, you know, as a nobody on the internet, people are looking to me– and the problem was that all the diverse states I could think of to start things out also came with much more expensive media markets, making money too important, too early. Now that California has moved up to March, that argument has become less persuasive.

We should make a rule that the other discussion must always be moved to the third or fourth thread from the top.

  97. 97

And as long as that’s the case, we have a shot.

Let me know when you want Steep to supply you with a Satin Smoove™ playlist. LOL.

@Mary G: I thought our 3 local news channels (5, 9 and 12) covered it in a straightforward manner with no “both sides” BS. Channel 5 (NBC affiliate) did blur the faces of the Nazis on the video. Channels 9 & 12 (Sinclair) did not. The Cincinnati Enquirer has been a disgrace for decades.
ETA I saw new twist on Raw Story. Evidently the Nazis had been harassing a group of African Americans (shock) and the Indigenous marchers intervened, so the Nazis started harassing them.

Thanks for the song! I either never noticed that preface or I forgot about it. I admit I don’t always read every comment. I’ll commit it to memory and be more careful with what I say.

@WaterGirl: I also saw a statement to that effect on Twitter.

I was hoping you would show up tonight. I’m definitely wallowing deep in our ’70s wheelhouse.

    The O’Jays, “Back Stabbers.”

    Ben Cisco says:

@Steeplejack: Brother, I am all in. I subscribed to Spotify a while back and it’s amazing. I never collected vinyl back in the day, wish I had.

This Covington Catholic story is getting more press coverage in my news feed than Trump’s speech….

Ah, that is sweet. Young MAGAs wrest away some of the vestiges of the DJT Admin’s control over the The Wall narrative. And look like shit in the process.
Trump’s “Offer” is still at the top of my news feeds though. ( I’ve mentioned it before; is an interesting news aggregator. )

Cleo and I have really been bonding. She likes to boop noses with me and we have these fake wrestling matches where she attacks my firearm, fake biting and scratching, while I scritch her little belly. She’s adorable.

    @Ben Cisco:

Thanks! I’m going to check out his/their stuff.

Damn, I’m blanking on the name of a young white guy who did some really good neo-soul stuff a few years ago. I’m blocked because I keep thinking of Beck, “Debra.”

Palate-cleansing good song from Beck: “Deadweight.”

@Steeplejack: Loose Ends – out of the UK. Awesome group. The longer version of that song is only available on vinyl, and only in the UK. What I wouldn’t do to get my hands on it…

This is why I’m such a dick about asking people for links or citations.

I love these requests; seriously – the reader links give life to this blog. (Also spiders like to eat ’em :-) [crawlers including search engine crawlers]
Personally, seeing unattributed stuff, my first reaction is to do a cursory google search then if nothing turns up, a slightly longer search, then if nothing turns up, politely ask for sources/links/refs.

  228. 228
    Steeplejack says:

    @Ben Cisco:

You’re better off. I collected vinyl obsessively, then lost it all in the terrible fire of ’02. It’s all on line anyway. Spotify is pure gold!

I went through a period where I was sad because I thought there were some obscure LPs I had that would never show up on line. Then eventually they did. They’re out there.

One such: Freddy Robinson, “Black Fox.” From his album The Coming Atlantis. I think that (or the first Santana album) was the first LP I bought after I got to college. Almost 50 year ago! Kee-rist!

    Steeplejack says:

Cool! I like her stuff a lot. Randy’s, I mean. Dunno about her sister. (Joke.) Is she musical?

It does take a lot of time, the B-J habit. But I’m retired, and my hobbies were building stuff and rock hounding, both of which take more out of you than I have to give anymore, so spending time here is a good thing, mostly.

I try to do more give and take now than I used to. Try not to piss people off, although when someone pisses me off, and redoubles their efforts several times — whoo boy! This last Russian troll, I told him to DIAF right off, then decided I was hasty and asked for that comment to be deleted, that I was too hasty. I was wrong. As if that bully was autistic!

I wish Monday was gonna be broadcast live by C-SPAN, the day at that piss-ant HS full of religious bigots, I mean. That would be worth watching, but I fly outta here Tuesday, TSA willing, for AZ, and have to be busy packing Monday.

The Blues Magoos, “We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet.” Masters of the fuck-you (non-)lip-sync. Aided by clueless camera work, as per the time.

Good stuff! But it almost hurts me to look at these guys while they’re performing. What I’m seeing doesn’t match with what I’m hearing. I know—racist!

This neo-soul stuff tugs me toward Simply Red. “It’s Only Love.”

    Donald Byrd, “(Falling LIke) Dominoes.”

Okay, another amnesia moment: there is a song that I thought was by Donald Byrd or the Blackbyrds, something like “We Are the Golden Apples of the Sun,” but I’m coming up blank. That is, what comes up on YouTube is not what I’m thinking of.

You and Omnes are crossing the streams. You may open a portal.

Donald Byrd, “Woman of the World.” Not the song I was thinking of, but a good one.
