Democrats were hopeful that @realDonaldTrump was finally willing to re-open government & proceed with a much-needed discussion to protect the border. Unfortunately, reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of previously rejected initiatives. https://t.co/MFwebWSevG pic.twitter.com/yMTm4iP27h

What we didn’t hear from the President was any sympathy for the federal workers who face so much uncertainty because of the chaos of the #TrumpShutdown.
— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) January 19, 2019
No deal, per @SenSchumer:
“It was the President who singled-handedly took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place – offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking,” he says in statement. pic.twitter.com/xqW83ZTtLn

Lawyer alert: The Supreme Court, yesterday, decided to not take the DACA case, leaving DACA in place for at least another year
Trump offering to extend DACA for a year is like me offering to not lasso the moon. He’s offering to allow something he can’t stop anyway#TrumpShutdown
— Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) January 19, 2019
Upending the lives of DACA recipients and then using them as hostages for an absurd and useless wall as hundreds of thousands of government workers go unpaid is one of the most immoral polices any modern president has pursued. Can’t dance around this. It’s just awful.

"By including the priorities of rank-and-file Democrats in this plan," Trump says while introducing a plan on which rank-and-file Democrats were not consulted and which is way to the right of the party's consensus on the issue https://t.co/NlfGEF605j
— Dara Lind (@DLind) January 19, 2019
It is clear now Trump is not making an offer; he's having a press conference. Elections matter; Trump offering nothing to Dreamers they don't already have through courts. I don't know what Kushner was thinking. What's faster than "dead on arrival." https://t.co/Zj8fOjX219
— Juliette Kayyem (@juliettekayyem) January 19, 2019
Agreed. Plus, as I think @NateSilver538 suggested, this was more an attempt to try to curry favorable media framing. Sounds like it won’t work on that level either. https://t.co/xRz52N9nQ9
— Daniel W. Drezner (@dandrezner) January 19, 2019
The problem with agreeing to funding Wall is you have to swallow the WH’s rhetorical accompaniment for Wall. If you give $1 you’re putting $1 worth of the ugliest rhetoric ever used to describe immigrants into your own voice. That’s why No is a perfectly acceptable answer.

Nancy SMASH is the very best. So glad she’s Speaker. She’s such a boss.
WaterGirl
@Yarrow: I feel 1,000 times better about this situation than I would if Nancy Smash was not the *Vader of the House.
Vader was an autocorrect of Leader. I decided to leave it. She’s not dark like Vader, but she probably scares them just as much.
Yarrow
@WaterGirl: She needs some awesome theme music for when she walks in a room.
debbie
@Yarrow:
That shot of her walking out of the White House in her red coat donning her shades says it all.
Yarrow
@debbie: It does. Just need the right music every time she shows up. Something cool but that lets everyone know who’s in charge.

One of the habits I am trying to develop this new year is to take some time each day to learn Polish. Today’s lesson was the verb ‘to speak’. Every time I started to type speak the predictive text suggested SpeakerPelosi. ?
Immanentize
@Yarrow: I recommend the theme from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Performed by the Danish National Orchestra — really, do not miss this!
It has Nancy Smash all over it….

@delk:
mowić?

@zhena gogolia: tak
WaterGirl
@Yarrow: @debbie: I’m down with that.

The only interesting thing about this “offer” is that when Nancy told the ASSet he couldn’t give the SOTU address in the House, McConnell apparently finally realized that House Democrats aren’t going to cave and that he would need to engineer a deal.
I’m pretty sure that Trump understands (as much as his feeble mind understands anything) that as pathetic and disingenuous this offer was, it was a signal of weakness because he’s negotiating with himself in public and Democrats are offering him nothing. He’s being called out for “amnesty” by the worst of his supporters, and as ridiculous as that is, it still makes him look weak. And after all of this, he’s failed at putting any more pressure on Democrats.

Yarrow
@Immanentize: Very cool. Not quite sure it’s right for Nancy SMASH but I loved it.
Citizen_X
@Yarrow: “Trump has picked up the folding chair, and..”
“Wait, what’s that?”
“Oh my god, that’s Nancy Pelosi’s theme music!”
John Revolta
@delk: When I was growing up in Chicago many taverns had a sign out front which remains the only Polish I know today: ZIMNE PIWO

Nancy Pelosi is my hero!
In the praise of the Goddess (Parvati, Durga, the female half of Shiva)
Mahishasur Mardini (Slayer of Mahishasur)
Jackie
@Immanentize: Your link took me to a vote for Geiko insurance contest ?
zhena gogolia
@John Revolta:
Very important phrase. I saw those signs as recently as 1995. (i.e. not very recently, I guess)
WaterGirl
@Immanentize: @Yarrow: I don’t know, I think maybe that would be perfect. You wouldn’t even have to play the whole song, just a few notes and it would have the desired effect.
Mo MacArbie
Heh, there’s a RPG site that sells many games in other languages. One particular game is in what looks to be Polish, but the title seems familiar as a possible loan word: Fajerbol.
Gelfling 545
@Immanentize: That would be cool!
delk
@zhena gogolia: I still see them. We go for Polish food often. Both my husband and I are 50% Polish.
Aleta
@Immanentize: That works perfectly.
Miss Bianca
@Yarrow: And the rest of the country finally seems to be waking up about her. To think I had to spend so much time telling my True Progressive colleagues to give the old broad a chance, and not be so eager to throw her over for the leaderly leadership of one of The Youngs! Any Young, it didn’t matter, they couldn’t give me a name, but wow, that old Nancy Pelosi had to go because she was so *old* and not progressive enough!
To be fair, my sister, who surprised me by spouting some of that horseshit, did spontaneously write to tell me, “you were right about Nancy Pelosi.” Still warms the cockles of my liver when I think about it. : )
Karen
Trump chose his terms (with Pence,Kushner, etc writing their proposal) because he wants to be the hero. The Dems could save DACA and save the federal government if they just “compromise” and give in to Trump.
Something just popped into my head: Trump has already demanded that the IRS workers work unpaid and they’re not essential. I think that Trump is going to demand all the federal employees go back to work unpaid. I think that he’ll do it because the Dems dare “defy” him.
Please someone, someones tell me and explain to me why this can’t happen. I need to be talked down big time.
Howard Appel
I suggest The Ride of the Valkyries for the Speaker’s theme music.
White & Gold Purgatorian
@debbie: Yeah, I’m old, but Helen Reddy’s “I am woman hear me roar” works for me as Nancy’s theme song.
Yarrow
@Miss Bianca:
That is excellent. You can remind your sister of it the next time she doubts you.

“I love to crush the other side and take the benefits,” he wrote in a book called Think Big. “Why? Because there is nothing greater. For me it is even better than sex, and I love sex.” He went on to observe: “You hear lots of people say that a great deal is when both sides win. That is a bunch of crap. In a great deal you win—not the other side. You crush the opponent and come away with something better for yourself.”

@Yarrow:
Protesters used to mock (or tease) Dick Cheney[1] with the Imperial Death March (John Williams) on portable sound equipment (a game with the Secret Service), so there’s precedent. This time it would be supportive. eta to be clear, some other tune.
[1] A friend told me his anarchist friends used to do this. Only record I can find on google is AG Ashcroft being harassed this way.

Counter offer should be for Trumpov and Pence to both resign. He can have his wall then.
Ken
I vote for another Nancy’s most famous song.
Immanentize
@Jackie: That is a weird intertube effect. I get the symphony orchestra!
Jackie
@Ken: YES!!!??
Jackie
@Immanentize: It’s all good. I love all the Good/Bad/Ugly music. I knew which song you meant – even without the link.??
O. Felix Culpa
@schrodingers_cat: Love this!
Immanentize
@Jackie: Ah, but the orchestra version is really something to check out. Especially the Soprano on the balcony toward the end singing the theme from the graveyard gunfight….
Immanentize
@Karen:
I am talking you down. Nothing to fear!
The Pres. already signed the back-pay bill that passed the Congress. This has greatly relieved my furloughed friends who shared your fears before he did so.
Jackie
@Immanentize: The back pay bill? Is there a link?
Jackie
@Immanentize: Looked it up and, yes…. chills down my spine. Thank you ?
Immanentize
@Jackie: back pay bill
Jackie
@Immanentize: That’s great for those folks who are willing to work with them re bills due. I’m hoping more landlords/banks than not are willing to work with federal employees and government contractors trying to survive.
Karen
@Immanentize:
Thank you!
akryan
@Karen: He probably can, but I think at that point the public unions really would just say “fuck it” and strike even if it was illegal.
Sasha
Strictly speaking, Trump didn’t take away DACA protections, he let them expire.
TomatoQueen
@Immanentize: That is eerie and great fun.
Aleta
Pelosi could enter to the 1st verse of Think Twice, Laverne Baker:
I said you better think twice
Before you walk out that door
I’ve got news for you, little boy
You ain’t got a mother here no more
So you better be nice
Better take my advice
Hey yeah
Think twice
Listen to me
Think twice

*That* is what I want to hear Nancy Pelosi say, in those clear, blunt terms. Tell Trump that his wall is fake policy — and by the way Trump voters, he was playing you all along.

Paraphrasing a Stones tune from 50 years ago. It’s good we have her.
Oh the Speaker looks so fright’ning
With her gavel in her hand
When she gets home to her children
She’s a family woman
But when it comes to the nitty-gritty
She can shove in her knife
Yes she really looks quite religious
She’s been a politician all her life
