Proof of Life: Cincinnati Meet-Up

From party-planner Ohio Mom:

Here we are at the Meet up. It’s me, Ohio Mom, standing, and Ohio Dad at the end of the table, caught with his fork in his mouth.

I’ll let everyone else identify themselves in the comments.

That’s Ohio Dad waving.

It’s hard to get a good photo of lots of people eating at a long table.

I believe there’s going to be a (quite small & select) Denver meetup this evening, too.

Remember, you don’t need an out-of-town visitor for a meet-up… just somebody who’ll propose a date and place, and at least one other BJ jackal to show up.

    The small Denver meetup tonight has increased by 33%! One more person (Scamp Dog) will be joining moi and PsiFighter37 at the Jagged Mountain Brewery at 7pm.

    If you want to attend and tell us about it, email me: scott (at)

    I’ll be the one in the bright red, Washington Capitals 2018 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!! hoodie. Eat it Cole and any other Pens fans who happen to read this. :P

    Sounds like fun! Too bad I’m on the other side of the country.

    I’m next to waving Ohio dad in the middle photo. Thanks to all for the lovely get-well card for LittleBear in Cincy children’s hospital! She liked it!

    Fine looking jackal pack there!
    Wish I could make the Denver meetup but other plans already in place :( Enjoy and post pics for us!

    Meet-ups do sound like fun. I spend two weeks of every month in Houston helping with my son’s children. I hope at some point the Houston jackals will plan a meet-up while I am there. There must be at least a few who live there.

    looks like a good meetup :)

    Steve in the ATL says:

    It was a lot of fun! Cincinnati has some great Juicers. Looking forward to the meet up with the Westside crew who were too cool for this group (Cincinnati humor).

    @Steve in the ATL:

    You’re not going to tell us which one is you?

  9. 9
    Steve in the ATL says:

    @zhena gogolia: I was sitting across from Scott and next to OhioMom and Mrs. cintibud.

    Not helpful? I’m not in the pictures.

    Looks like a most excellent time was had by all.. Very sorry to have missed it. Ah well, perhaps next time…

    ThresherK says:

    Looked like fun. Glad to see people (but with my memory for faces I prolly won’t remember enough to put them together).

    @Steve in the ATL:

    You’re maintaining your air of mystery.

  13. 13
    JPL says:

    It looks as though a good time was had bad all. I didn’t read about any jackal fights in Cincinnati so that’s good.

  14. 14
    Miss Bianca says:

    fine-looking group (herd? pride? gaggle? murder?) of jackals!

    RAVEN says:

    Anyone seen ljt? We met on Edisto Island in November but I have’t seen her her.

  16. 16
    Ohio Mom says:

    Special thanks to Anne Laurie and Adam for their behind-the-scenes help pulling this together. And thanks to Steve for inspiring us to meet, and everyone who braved the cold and joined us.

    I had a great time. It’s fun finding out how much you have in common with people you had only known by their aliases. It’s a good antidote to the news.

    Now who is in charge of the next meet-up?

  17. 17
    Ohio Mom says:

    P.S. To CarolDuhart2, in case you are reading this: I wanted to arrange carpooling for you but I couldn’t find contact info for you. Next time, ask Adam or Anne Laurie to send me your email. We missed you, and the others who came to the meet up in Mason in I don’t remember — was that two years ago?

  18. 18
    Steve in the ATL says:

    @zhena gogolia: there’s a non-negligible chance that I’m a figment of your imagination

    Right now I’m the only living boy in Polk County FL

    Blue Galangal – I’m at the end of the table (on the side) next to Scott in the 3rd photo. Thank you, Ohio Mom, for organising this! I’m up for another meetup whenever. :D

  21. 21
    Cain says:

    Sure wait till I leave to have two meet ups!

  22. 22
    Steve in the ATL says:

    @Cain: there’s a Balloon Juice Blue Ash Bar Association meeting tonight at the Brown Dog!

  23. 23
    cintibud says:

    I’m the guy with a beard in the middle of the top pic. We had a blast and were happy to meet such cool folks!

  24. 24
    Kathleen says:

    @Steve in the ATL: Doubt I was included in the reference to absent “WestSide” crew (I am on the west side) but I’ve not been on BJ and was not informed of this event. Glad you had a good time and hope you have an uneventful trip home!

  25. 25
    Kirk Spencer says:

    @Josie: one of these days I’ll actually be lurking and see a Houston meet up. Hesitant to suggest one when my schedule is so irregular.

  26. 26
    Keith P. says:

    One person in each picture is farting. Your task is to guess which one it is.

  27. 27
    WaterGirl says:

    From a Washington Monthly article on today’s Brexit vote: Trump supposedly tweeted this, minutes after the vote.

    “If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?”

    Two questions: 1) does anyone think Trump is able to think that clearly and then write that sentence and 2) do we think that tweet is really referencing the shutdown?

  28. 28
    WaterGirl says:

    @Kathleen: Sounds like you might have gone if you had known about it!

    Does anyone keep names and contact info for people who have been to meet ups so that if another meet up is being planned, everybody can be contacted? If not, they should.

    I would, in fact, be willing to keep that database if people wanted to send me that info after a meet up.

  29. 29
    Steve in the ATL says:

    @Kathleen: no worries—based on my meeting with the union today, I’ll be back….

    ETA: Bella Q and I are at the Brown Dog in Blue Ash if you can brave rush hour

  30. 30
    Yarrow says:

    @WaterGirl: Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council is the one who tweeted that.

    If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?— Donald Tusk (@eucopresident) January 15, 2019

  31. 31
    WaterGirl says:

    @Yarrow: Donald Tusk Reading comprehension fail.

    So the answers to my questions are “no” and “no”. :-)

  32. 32
    Kathleen says:

    @Steve in the ATL: Aw, thanks Steve! I appreciate that but I’m in for the night because I’m old and boring and it’s cold (wah). Safe trip!

  33. 33
    chris says:

    @Yarrow: Saw that on Charlie Stross’ twitter. Also this executive summary of Brexit in four tweets.

    ETA: Meetups look like fun. I may have to leave the woods one day.

  34. 34
    Kathleen says:

    @WaterGirl: Yes I would have and that is an excellent idea. In fact, I organized the meet up here a couple of years ago and have a few email addresses/phone numbers from that event.

  35. 35
    WaterGirl says:

    @Kathleen: If you want to send me the info, I will get that started. If you are agreeable, I will write to Adam to put us in touch.

  36. 36
    Ohio Mom says:

    @Kathleen: I couldn’t remember who organized the first meet up, now I know. I remember that afternoon fondly.

    I will ask Anne Laurie to send you my email — then you can send me yours and I will make sure you hear about the next one. Which may be as early as the spring, if/when SiubanDuinne drives through.

    debbie says:

    @Steve in the ATL:

    That’s not a little sliver of you in the last photo?

    Looks like a fun time!

  38. 38
    Kathleen says:

    @Ohio Mom: Thank you.

  39. 39
    debbie says:

    I shudder to think what they think a “positive solution” would be.

  40. 40
    Ohio Mom says:

    @debbie: Nah. I kept Steve out of camera range, per his request.

    One thing I appreciate about Steve is that I only had to know one name. With the rest of us, it’s like reading a Russian novel: everyone has at least two names. It’s a work out for your memory.

  41. 41
    debbie says:

    @Ohio Mom:

    Plus, it’s even harder to keep names straight when you have to overcome what you thought everyone looked like. When I managed a sales force, I spoke on the phone with the reps for at least six months before actually meeting face to face. None of them looked like what i thought they would.

  42. 42
    MomSense says:

    Cinci Jackal pack looking good! Glad you all had a fun time.

  43. 43
    satby says:

    Glad you all had a good time!

  44. 44
    Ohio Mom says:

    @debbie: Yes, I’ve had the same experience. Except when I saw a photo of Majorx4, he looked exactly as I imagined. I don’t know what that means.

    Do I remember you are in Columbus? When we have an afternoon meet up one day, you will come and I will be gobsmacked that you looked nothing like I think you do.

  45. 45
    Steve in the ATL says:

    @debbie: you are correct!

  46. 46
    debbie says:

    @Ohio Mom:

    You will be surprised, or disappointed, but at least something! ;)
