NEW: Trump referred to shutdown as "strike" in profanity-laced meeting with Democratic leaders. @swin24 and @samstein report: https://t.co/qKH03kEWpJ
— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast) January 5, 2019
The person most bedazzled / befuddled by the “Businessman Master of the Universe” role-playing on The Apprentice turns out to be Ranty Granpa, Oval Office Squatter. But, hey! At least he has a Y-chromosome… I mean, votes the (R) box… err, hasn’t said the m-word in the Oval Office… on camera. This week. That we know of. Oh, wait…
He also, unprompted, brought up the Democrats who want him impeached, and even blamed Pelosi for new Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib saying at a party earlier this week that Democrats would impeach the “motherfucker” Trump https://t.co/KXWaNgS7Bc

I feel the same. He’s such an idiot. And of course, the media has to keep acting like this is all perfectly normal.
Raoul
Wait.
Trump had a profanity laden meeting, but the Beltway aneurysm is about Tlaib?
D.C. press is such garbage.
Pogonip
The title on the linked story is as shown above, but the text of the story is about an entirely different subject. The Daily Beast goofed.
Mnemosyne
@Raoul:
Yup. Because women can’t swear, or they give up all right to be treated decently. That was the actual theory that CBS had when they showed tapes of Eliza Dushku saying naughty words on the set of “Bull.”
Sadly for them, their own hand-picked arbitrator disagreed and decided that relentlessly harassing someone in the workplace is worse than swearing. Who knew?
gwangung
@James E Powell:
I think that article is more “parachute journalism” by the mass media who do not usually cover marginalized communities. It’s a quick dive and lacks the feel of people who deal with indigenous tribes on a day to day basis and overstates its case just as much as previous articles did, but in a different direction.
I don’t speak for any of the tribes, but I do interact regularly with people from various tribes, and I would not exactly say that Sen. Warren is universally liked (nor is she universally hated). But her use of tactics used by exploiters of various tributes doesn’t exactly rest easy with the folks I know.

Brachiator
Weird. One story makes it sound like Pence is handling the negotiating while Grandpa Small Gloves fumes and rants off to the side. What a farce.
Trump’s fragile ego desperately needs something that he can call a victory. This is not the same as an honest compromise. Can the Democrats give Trump something meaningless that he can hold up as a win? Should they do this?
Aleta
What’s happening with the National Zoo?
I feel like T wants to fire air traffic controllers or something, like he saw Reagan do, pretending he’s going to break unions now. Hoping to become a libertarian hero, hoping that might save him. (Makes no sense except for playing a leading man on TV. It’s like that fcking poster. Which he’s probably had framed and hung by now. Copies for.sale soon.)
Brachiator
@gwangung:
This doesn’t make sense to me. What tactics?
Viva BrisVegas
@Brachiator:
Give him something to rename but without any changes. It worked with NAFTA.
Something named after Obama would do the trick.
Aleta
@James E Powell: “And, frustratingly, non-Native people are defining a debate about Native people without letting them speak for themselves.” Frustratingly, the Huff Post does not mention how the absence of NAs on staff in the mainstream press is a big part of the problem.
sukabi
Fucker doesn’t understand anything (or hopes his followers are morons) possibly both.
An employer doesn’t go on strike. They shutdown and lockout. Fire, layoff and furlough. All of which screw over their employees.
gwangung
@Brachiator: The use of DNA to lend legitimacy to their personage.
The tendency of institutions to favor biology over cultural and experiential membership in awarding contracts and money is a real thing. And while it’s true that Warren is not claiming tribal membership, it’s a distinction that is not shared with many institutions and often flies by people who are less than sympathetic with the problems of native people.
I think people should treat this issue sensitively and in an nuanced way and not just dismiss it out of hand (because the lived in experience is that non-Native people have not treated the issue carefully and flattened out all the issues into a binary yes-or-no litmus test).
@Aleta: Yes. That, too. Very much so.
Aleta
@Viva BrisVegas: The Obama Medal of … ?
sukabi
@Brachiator: think part of the “weirdness” is that besides the ‘leakers’ sanitizing, to a certain extent, drumpfs behavior some in the media are doing ‘sanitation’ as well. They’re all working overtime to normalize this shitshow.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Viva BrisVegas:
Y’all ain’t renaming our freeway, no way, no how.
Emma
@gwangung: So you’re saying that we should dismiss the opinions of the people quoted in the story? Because they are also NAs and they seem to have a different view from those you know personally. Also, should all NAs turn their backs on someone who, by their own experience, has been an ally in their political fight?
Viva BrisVegas
@gwangung:
Certainly tread carefully, but remember that Trump has already stomped over this issue with size 15 racist boots.
Warren had a right to confront her accusers. Who were not only calling her a liar and fraud, but by extension her family as well.
To remain silent on the issue would have meant a tacit acceptance of Trump’s racism.
Has it really come to the stage where it is offensive for a person to assert a real and actual native American ancestry?
Certainly the Republicans would have it so.

Has anyone here who uses gmail noticed a lack of incoming emails for the past several hours? I made an online purchase this morning (my time) but have not received an email with the transaction number; without that number, I can’t make payment and the order will lapse. Looking at my inbox, I notice a lack of incoming mails dated 5th January, which tells me the problem is likely not with the online marketplace..
Chetan Murthy
@gwangung:
So let me get this straight: Because *other* people are assholes, Warren is supposed to stay silent and not defend herself? What has *SHE* done that qualifies as wrong?

Sloane Ranger
@Mnemosyne: This is part of it, plus she’s a Muslim who wears the Hijab so she is expected to be even more ignorant of bad language than the average “lady”.
To be fair to the media there is footage of her dropping the MF bomb, while Trump’s profanity is merely reported by a third party and the media loves showing/playing clips. Remember the pu££y tape, which sent the entire media to the fainting couches while clutching their pearls.
Ruckus
@Chetan Murthy:
I don’t get it either.
She’s not gotten one iota of assistance as a minority, has not asked for any, and has never claimed to be NA, only that a DNA test said she did have some NA ancestry. Did she say every single word 100% correctly about the entire mess? I doubt that because there is no 100% correct way. She was, as I remember told that there was NA in her heritage as a family story. So was I. A great, or great great or whatever grandmother was supposed to be full blood Blackfoot. Considering some of the other family heritage stories that I was told, I’m rather suspect on the truth of the matter – I was also told that my great grandfather on the other side was a Sicilian Mafia enforcer who liked his work so well that his bosses told him to go to America, shut the hell up and change his line of work. I think a lot of these types of stories are like the camp fire round robin stories, you tell the person next to you something and by the time it gets back around through 5 or 6 people there is nothing at all similar about what you get told to what you said.
Gozer
Since funding for the federal court system runs out on Jan 11 could he be trying to stall thinking that this will get him out of his legal problems and score a payday for himself/other crooks?
Ruckus
@Sloane Ranger:
“Oh my dear, whatever will come of us if we use this sort of language?” Sounds like on of those movies just after the code went into effect. One foot on the floor at all times, all shirts buttoned to the neck, skirts ankle length, children are delivered by the stork, with no transfer of genetic material via any organs and swearing is the devils work. Why the fuck does anyone want to return to an era like that? The 50s sucked donkey balls and dipshits like individual 1 supporters are trying to take us back there. Assholes.
Ruckus
@Gozer:
Well his MO has been for years to fuck someone, figuratively or actually and then bully them into shutting the hell up, so yeah I’d say that at the low level he thinks at, this would be likely. With one exception, he’d have to understand that the federal court system runs out of money on the 11th. And seeing as how little he knows/understands about, well anything, I’m always suspicious any time it seems like he might understand something.
(((CassandraLeo)))
@Sloane Ranger: To be scrupulously fair, there is in fact footage of Trump saying “motherfucker” too. So fuckem.

@Emma: That is not what was said at all. In a story about Native Americans in Oklahoma, no Native Americans from Oklahoma were quoted. This story would be more credible if it came from an outlet regularly covering Native American news than it is coming from the Huffington Post.
Ladyraxterinok
@James E Powell: The media loves to jump on the train before they know anything about the story. No one seems to be willing to do even the most minimal research.
Barney
@sukabi: but Trump is, in a sense, on strike: he refused to do his job (sign the solution that Republicans and Democrats had worked out in Congress) until his own demands were met, and he’s saying he do it for months or years until his opposition caves in.
Barbara
@Starfish: What women are guaranteed to encounter: continually moving the goalposts. So it turns out many Native Americans don’t see the big deal with the DNA test, and now we are told, but they aren’t from Oklahoma and the news source wasn’t Native American, never mind that the highest profile scolding wasn’t from either of those sources to begin with. This is when your seemingly principled objection starts to look like it is grounded in old fashioned misogyny.

@H.E.Wolf: whoops, sorry you’re right.

I think the Native Americans who object to the DNA test aren’ actually understanding that Warrens problem wasn’t about them. Her problem was non native politics and being run over by a stupid story with no truth that was setting up Warren to look hapless and a non fighter back. Warren had to do something that looked effective to the majority of voters who are not Native American and a carefully worded sensitive rebuttal wasn’t going to cut it. To non Natives, DNA tests are pretty significant and mean something, like Trump and Scott Brown are liars and Elizabeth Warren isn’t. Now I suspect DNA tests are less accurate on long term ancestry than people currently understand, but to most people it’s proof. That matters on the main stage. Doing nothing or just more statements like she had already tried, would have amounted to giving up national influence. It’s not really rational, but that’s what seems to happen. Kerry, Gore and other examples.
The tribal organizations should be thinking larger too. Look at what she does in laws and real things and compare it to what republicans do. It is unrealistic and petty to demand she not defend herself. Small groups can’t get anything without allies. Honestly, that is how democracy is supposed to work. I think the objections amount to another variant of purity politics.
Chris Johnson
@Barney: He’s working for Putin, as is Pence, as is McConnell. Ryan knew but he’s gone: skulked away as quietly as he could.
They are traitors actively trying to wreck the country, and Trump is doing it to win Putin’s love, and Pence is just all-in on being a traitor, and McConnell is in it for partisan gain but he can’t get out now, he’ll be shot. If not for Trump they’d probably be selling out to Putin in a less colorful way having mostly to do with getting out of Syria, favoring Russia in every way, etc. plus ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ religious stuff they like (esp. Pence)
But Trump wants Putin to LOVE him, and Putin jilted him at a summit, so here we are. Pence is too stubborn to worry, and McConnell has no exit strategy at all and will leave this life of treason through some act of violence, not sure from who or where. And Trump will keep the government closed and ruin everybody BECAUSE HE WANTS TO. This is not a downside for him. He doesn’t love us or even like us, and wrecking our country is desirable to him because it might win Putin’s love back.
It’s that personal. Not a good situation.

The WaPo reported earlier this week that the employees who care for the animals at the zoo were deemed essential, and so they’re still on the job. Apparently the zoo employees constitute the largest group of Smithsonian employees who aren’t furloughed. My understanding is that there originally was some kind of deal, that gave Trump some extra funding or something like that for border security that he could call a win. The scary part we all see coming is that when the shit hits the fan wrt Trump/Russia/rampant corruption/Congressional-Russian $ involvement, Trump is going to go Dr. Strangelove on us. He will try to declare martial law or over-rule another branch in a manner he can’t. If the complicity of Republicans in Congress is deep enough, even if that came out in Mueller’s documents, I don’t think the Senate would try to stop him. Mitch McConnell is in for a penny and in for a pound. I have faith the military won’t go over to the dark side, but it’s gonna get ugly. I’m sorry I feel that way but that’s what I see coming.

Mitch McConnell knew the Russians were donating them tens of millions of $ during the 2016 elections. Mitch knew about the $30 M funneled through the NRA. Knowing this Mitch not allowing Obama to say anything about Russian interference in the elections pretty much seals McConnell in on treason to me.

villageidiocy
@Aleta: Smithsonian folks considered essential to maintain life and property are working. Those federal employees are currently working for free. Contractors and trust fund employees may or may not be working depending on whether they can do so independently of federal employee oversight. Some could do so without oversight but cannot work because the buildings are closed and can’t work from home. The animals are all being cared for, but any research is suspended. This includes the Zoo’s research facility in Front Royal, VA. Much research time and money will be lost in this fiasco. Scientific funding is often calendar based, and a number of grad students (pre and post docs) may be in deep sh*t (speaking of across the government, not just the Smithsonian.)
FYI the Smithsonian and some other agencies sponsor graduate students. They don’t grant degrees but offer a place to work, resources (e.g.lab space, mentors, etc) and sometimes grant money.
Also, the keeper staff is already under staffed, and overworked. Keeper jobs are also on the low end of the pay scale, especially for DC. They not only have to pay rent but also pay for gas to get to work, so they can work for free keeping the cuteness alive for tourists who often have no clue about what the entire government entails.

The problem is that Warren’s situation quickly becomes like the Clinton email server shitshow: no one knows what the real truth is, no one is clear on what the law says, and there are a dozen half-baked rumors that spread to make the whole issue an impossible mess.
That’s how the Republicans roll these days. They know they can’t win if they debate issues in a fact-based, honest way like grown-ups, so they retreat to Fox News to have their minds poisoned by the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter and Jones.

@kindness:
I agree that its going to get pretty ugly. I hope that our folks in the Congress and other institutions of enforcing the law are gaming some of this out so that they and we are not completely unprepared (though its hard to prepare for this kind of crazy). I just feel something very very big is going to happen and it will test our mettle unlike at any time in our history. This will be another type of “civil war” run from our national institutions. We’ve had two high placed generals, McChrystal and McRaven throw down on where they stand and there will be more. I agree that its best to leave this apart from the military but who knows what this man will force? I think about this and pray for us. His goal and the goal of his minions is to disrupt our institutions and damage us beyond easy repair. He doesn’t give a shit about resolving anything. The goal is to do damage to our country to the greatest extent possible. I hope that Pelosi and others have this in their awareness. He will need to be boxed in and deactivated — but it might not be until he has done a fair more amount of damage.
