Hey there Colorado peeps, one of our own is holding a house party for Patricia Anne Zornio. And if you’d like to attend, send me an email and I’ll pass it along to the host and you’ll get an evite.
About Zornio:
Patricia (Trish) Anne Zornio is a Colorado-based scientist and educator currently exploring for the U.S. Senate in Colorado, 2020. In a time when facts, reason, and everyday Americans seem to be forgotten, Trish has boldly stepped forward offering a new type of political candidate.
At 33 years old, the journey to a possible U.S. Senate candidacy began in 2015 when Trish was attending several U.S. Senate hearings in Washington, D.C. During the hearings, Trish came to realize the problems she saw first hand in healthcare, education, and technology existed in part because there weren’t the right experts at the table. She found no scientists on the science committee, and very few senators with practical experience in healthcare, education, or environmental work. There were also committees with only men making healthcare choices for women, and many senators expressed confusion by current technologies that her generation use daily. She also recognized the vast majority of senators were incredibly wealthy, with the youngest person being over 40 years old — a fact that leaves the largest generation in America without any representation.
With her background, Trish spent over two years studying law, economics, foreign policy, and more. She studied campaigns with a fine-toothed comb, and read every campaign finance law and interpretation through the Federal Elections Commission. At the local and state level, she asked for meetings from current legislators to assist them with policy research and development, helping quietly behind the scenes, all on the side of her work at the university. Then, in mid 2017 she set out on an ambitious statewide exploratory tour, determined to hit all 64-counties to show the people of Colorado she was not only serious, but that she truly wanted to know what they needed most.
Today, Trish has visited 63 out of 64 counties and met with thousands of Coloradans. She has given dozens of talks on the role of science in policy and is actively working on a book. Trish continues her legislative efforts at the Colorado State Capitol and mentors other scientists in the legislative process. She also still teaches several courses at the University of Colorado Denver, namely behavioral neuroscience and research methodology, while continuing to mentor students in their academic pursuits.

But damned if the right and their idiot stans don’t make me inclined to support AOC just cause they so obviously bothered by her…smh

The OTA, Office of Technology Assessment, was disbanded years ago. It produced reports on the utility and viability of emerging science and technology for Congress in a way they could understand. It would be wonderful for Nancy or someone else (hello Pramila / Adam Smith) to introduce a bill to remedy the shortcoming.
It was probably eliminated because of climate science.

We’re finally getting some rain in So Cal today, so I’m procrasti-cooking this FODMAPs-friendly beef stew. I actually kind of hate when recipes say things like “6 carrots” because sizes can be so variable. Based on what they had at Whole Foods, 6 carrots and 4 parsnips with 1 pound of beef seemed like a LOT of vegetables. I ended up putting in 2 good-sized parsnips and a bag of baby carrots. And a half-cup of red Zinfandel.
Gin & Tonic
I spent the day alone with my two toddler grandchildren. Indoors, because it was pouring rain all day. They are now in bed, and I am in need of an alcoholic beverage. This is a young person’s game. The kids are delightful, of course, but they have a lot of energy.

@Dan B: The American Action Forum has a good piece on other methods to help Congress with tech and scientific policy, including more funding for the GAO’s tech assessment division and increased funding for tech savvy congressional staffers. GAO’s tech dept has only $2 million whereas the OTA was funded at $35million in 1996. A $10 million increase to GAO tech would be fantastic.

@TaMara (HFG): I make chicken thighs this way but I cook in the oven at a much higher temperature, 425, but potatoes only, no carrots. Or just chicken — which is crispier without the added moisture of the veggies. Tonight I made a sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot and apple soup with ginger and cinnamon. It was really good. I based it on a recipe that I found at one of my favorite websites, but I never follow them exactly. In this case I used much less pumpkin than called for, and used canned pumpkin, which in my experience has a much stronger, concentrated pumpkin flavor than whatever you cook yourself.
Here is the recipe: http://www.italianfoodforever.com/2017/09/spiced-pumpkin-soup/

@dmsilev: @Dorothy A. Winsor: That last fight scene was all on Snyder and the studio execs. While a showdown with Ares certainly needed to be part of the penultimate scene in the film, it didn’t need to be that mess. And it was a mess because Snyder designed it and choreographed it. Compare it to the amazon training scenes and the scene of the amazons fighting the Germans at the beginning of the movie, which were done by Jenkins and the fight choreographers who were working for her.

@OzarkHillbilly: All the recipes are regional. Paella originated in Valencia as a peasant dish. All you want is one of the short grain varieties, which are bahia, bomba, and senia. If you buy paella rice, you’ll be fine. Sometimes that’s how it’s branded, sometimes it’s branded as Valencia rice. Bomba is specifically known as Valencia rice.
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Adam L Silverman: That final fight expected us to be thrilled by special effects when the rest of the movie was about the characters. Someone I read differentiates between action and motion. Action is events that play into the plot and characterization and story. Motion is just movement, like a lot (though not all) of fight or chase scenes. That final battle was just motion.

In any case, I really liked it. I took my dad to see it and for some reason he was grumpy about these animated movies/films. Kept asking what the philosophical point.. then he brings up the race of the main character.. like he felt like the whole purpose was about changing the race of the character. “It’s just entertainment, Dad’ was my rebuttal. That’s actual Marvel Comics canon. Miles Morales originated on one of the other earths in the multiverse – Marvel’s primary earth is Earth 616 – and becomes Spider-Man after the death of that earth’s Peter Parker. Matt McIrvin
@Dorothy A. Winsor: A lot of reviews of Wonder Woman agreed that it fell down at the end with that final battle. I agree too–it was just the most ordinary part of the movie.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was amazing–it was easily my favorite movie appearance of Spider-Man, though I admit I haven’t seen several of them. It makes affectionate references to the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire ones in several places. I loved the wildly experimental, comics-style animation–the variable frame rate of the character animation was kind of jarring for the first several minutes, but I eventually got used to it once I realized they were actually using it as an artistic tool, going to a higher frame rate to evoke a heightened sense of awareness or a lower one to make the action look flailing and chaotic. Visible halftone dots, colored haloes like a mis-registered comics printing, panel framing making clever use of 3D, momentary flashes to solid-colored backgrounds–all of it gave the whole thing the look of a comic book on screen to a degree that we really haven’t seen in a movie before.
Not only is it a Marvel superhero movie that in no way resembles a Marvel Studios movie, it’s also a CGI animated movie that in no way resembles Pixar or Disney product, and in both cases, the departures it makes are good and fresh. I wouldn’t want every movie to be in this style, but I’d love it if more found their own style in a similar way.

@Ohio Mom: You might need to add a bit of oil – there’s not as much fat as in thighs. But as long as they are bone-in, skin on, it might work. The key is starting it in a cold pan and bring to temperature slowly. If you cook breast with thighs, the thighs should provide enough fat for both. :-)

@cain: Shazam/Captain Marvel has always been one of my favorites. If you want to see the character done right in comic book format, I highly recommend Alex Ross’s and Jim Krueger’s Justice and Ross’s and Mark Waid’s Kingdom Come. Ross really gets the character. I also highly recommend the DC Animated Universe Superman/Shazam: Return of Black Adam. It’s in between one of the DCAU shorts and their full length animated movies, so the run time is right around 40 minutes. It is somewhat adapted from the Superman/Shazam: First Thunder graphic novel. @lamh36: It’s a hell of a film about Russian gangsters. Viggo was nominated for an Oscar.
” Criminal tattoo”
Viggo Mortensen studied Russian gangsters and their tattoos. Mortensen spent a lot of time with a Russian Mafia specialist, Gilly McKenzie (organised crime specialist for the UN) and also consulted a documentary on the subject called The Mark of Cain (2000).[9] The tattoos that he wore, according to the New York Daily News, were so realistic that diners in a Russian restaurant in London fell silent out of fear, until Mortensen revealed his identity and admitted the tattoos were for a film.[10] From that day on he washed off his tattoos whenever he went off the set. Mortensen said of the significance of the tattoos:
I talked to them [authentic gangsters and Gilly McKenzie] about what they meant and where they were on the body, what that said about where they’d been, what their specialties were, what their ethnic and geographical affiliations were. Basically their history, their calling card, is their body.[11]”

@Starfish:
What did he say??
Matt McIrvin
@Adam L Silverman: Yeah, it was the Ultimate Universe, which began as Marvel’s early-2000s attempt to reboot their continuity with less backstory baggage for new readers to deal with. The X-Men books had an aesthetic closer to the X-Men movies of the time, and some things from the Ultimate continuity eventually ended up in the MCU–most noticeably, Ultimate Nick Fury looks like Samuel L. Jackson. (Not everything, though: Ultimate Captain America is an asshole. MCU Cap is a lot more like Earth-616 Cap.)
Ultimate Spider-Man was apparently one of their most popular books, but at some point there was this huge crisis event that smashed up Ultimate Earth and killed a bunch of heroes, and the fans mostly reacted negatively, so they were casting about for new things to do to maintain interest, and one of them was to kill off Peter Parker and bring in Miles. And it turned out people really liked Miles, so much so that when they shut down the Ultimate timeline they decided to bring him into the main universe.
That weird reptilian version of Green Goblin in Spider-Verse is apparently based on the Ultimate Green Goblin.

Speaking of Spider-Man, do you play video games? I highly recommend the 2018 Spider-Man game that came out a few months ago. I watched a play-through of it and looks super fast-paced and fun. I can confidently say it’s easily the best Spider-Man story in any media.
I won’t spoil much, but they show the origins of Mr. Negative and Doc Ock aka Otto Octavius. Peter Parker is Octavius’ assistant and Peter sees him as a father figure, working on robotic limbs. The ending where Peter as Spider-Man confronts Doc Ock is awesome and tearjerking. I highly recommend. Miles Morales also makes a prominent appearance as a main character and is eventually bitten by a spider like the one that gave Peter his powers.

@Matt McIrvin: That sounds like what I recall. Marvel Studios TV basically did this story line as part of their Ultimate Spider-man cartoon on Disney XD several years back. Entitling the story arc as Into the Spiderverse. It included Miles Morales, who finished the arc back in prime Peter Parker’s earth, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Ham. I don’t think Spider-Gwen was in that.

@Immanentize: No, because you’re bringing it up from a cold pan – you’re rendering the oil from the skin to crisp it. Searing is applying high temp quickly to crisp or brown the outside – and then reducing the heat to finish cooking – you need to do it in oil or you’ll burn the meat. Usually done for meats to be slow cooked to add a layer of flavor – or in the case of steaks, to provide a contrast to the flavors and textures of the (usually) rare-ish meat.

@Mnemosyne: Diana was specifically created to be the “god killer” specifically to be the weapon to defeat Ares. She had thought it was the sword that was the god killer, when it was her. Also, it was World War I. Because Captain America: The First Avenger had properly placed Cap’s origin in WW II, this forced DC to move Wonder Woman’s back to WW I, when in the comic books she emerges into man’s world specifically to aid the allies in World War II. Though there has, at times, been retcons in DC’s continuity that that was actually her mother Hypolita who fought alongside the Justice Society of American in World War II.

@lamh36: Yeah… Incredibles 2 had some nice moments and was competently made overall, but the universe of movies has changed so much since the original that another Incredibles in exactly the same style as the first one just isn’t a revelation in the same way. Spider-Verse felt like it was pushing the boundaries of what a superhero cartoon could do much like The Incredibles did in 2004. @Steve in the ATL: No it isn’t. The two primary players in the comic book industry in the US are DC and Marvel. Both either emerged from older publishers or emerged after consolidating multiple older publishers. And then they absorbed other publishers along the way. This is, for instance, how DC came to own the original Captain Marvel/Shazam characters, which actually predate the creation of Superman, because they bought out Fawcett Publishing. However, due to not using the character for a while, this ultimately led to a copyright dispute with Marvel, who had created their own Captain Marvel. While DC and Marvel fought this out on and off for decades, about seven years or so ago now, DC decided to just stop fighting it and decided to rename/consolidate the character’s name as Shazam.
DC’s stable of characters include the oldest ones in continuous superhero comic book print: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman (the DC Trinity), Shazam, Green Lantern, the Flash, Hawkman, etc. Many of Marvel’s most successful characters, such as Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, were not created until the 1960s or early 1970s. There are also significant differences in the stories being told. DC’s big three are clear literary archetypes, which has something of a trickle down effect onto how all the characters in DC are handled. Marvel’s characters are written as much more human. Kids who got powers through science experiments gone wrong (Spider-Man), but who have to juggle being heroes with finishing high school and paying the bills. Or science run amok as in the Fantastic Four. Or, as in the case of the Hulk, science run amok in a reconceptualization of Dr. Jekyll (Bruce Banner) and Mr. Hyde (the Hulk). The X-Men were actually all stand ins for Jews, African Americans, Latinx Americans, and other ethnic and religious minorities to tell stories dealing with racism and discrimination. The ultimate culmination of this was in retconning the biggest X-Men villain, Magneto, into being a Holocaust survivor. He lost one extended family, he will stop at nothing to keep from losing another one.
There are also a large numbers of small to medium to relatively large publishers that have reemerged over the years that are outside of the big two of DC and Marvel. Some of them will become more widely known, like Image Comics, now that their characters and stories are being adapted for movies.

@cain: The original was a pink Kree, Mar-Vell. Later known as Captain Marvel. I believe this is Jude Law’s character in the movie, though it hasn’t been formally confirmed. At one point in the comics, when Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel, which was what her character was called until DC and Marvel settled on the copyright and trademark fight, was an Avenger, an entire story arc involved her being raped and forcibly impregnated and then forced to carry the baby to term and then the baby stolen from her by the father. The rest of the Avengers didn’t do anything to assist her. It is one of the most jarring/grating story arcs, that doesn’t involving fridging a female character, I’ve ever heard of in a comic book series. And one of the main reasons that I never really read Avengers or anything else Marvel that wasn’t X-Men.

@Adam L Silverman: The big exception to that generational rule being Captain America, a 1940s hero created by Marvel long before Marvel was Marvel. And then they eventually brought that fact into the comics, and later the movies, by making him a frozen-on-ice hero out of time.
(The other big pre-Marvel Age Marvel superheroes were Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the original Human Torch. The latter got heavily reimagined as a member of the Fantastic Four, who had the same powers but was a different guy. Namor is the guy Aquaman is a knockoff of, and has sort of an interestingly ambiguous hero/villain status, but he hasn’t shown up on screen because of convoluted and mysterious IP issues.)

About Spiderverse: One thing to understand is that the animation seems odd because it is literally the highest quality animation ever made. They developed entirely new techniques. They took established techniques and used them in new ways for stylistic purposes, and all those experiments worked. From a technical perspective, Spiderverse is the god-movie of animation, being actively studied by other animators to scoop up its gooey, juicy secrets.
(Disclaimer: It’s a pretty regular experience for an animated movie to break all previous boundaries and be studied and used to upgrade all future movies.)

@Mnemosyne: I don’t really see how that is confusing in the context of the movie, since it’s a major plot point that Diana thinks he’s the cause of the war, but when it doesn’t stop after she thinks she’s killed him, he makes it clear she’s wrong; humans did it and he just nudged things to make it worse.
They open with the other gods having been killed long ago, and there’s still thunder, crops, death, etc., so why is it a problem to have wars after the good of war is killed?

@Mnemosyne:
Up until the final fight scene, I thought they were making the point that the gods really *weren’t* responsible for everything happening. The fighting, the science, the degradation or exaltation of humanity – it was supposed to be people doing that on their own. Then after Diana offs Ares suddenly all the soldiers have a kumbaya moment implying Ares really *was* causing the war and not just manipulating people into it. Then in the epilogue Diana is talking about humanity being responsible for itself like she hadn’t just seen Ares apparently mindcontrolling the entire soldiery of both sides in WWI. Very incoherent.
As a whole, it does look like the fight scene was plopped into a movie where it doesn’t fit the worldbuilding any more than it fits the style and feel.

It was so … unimaginative. Just watched it on youtube again to confirm. They have two (avatars of) divine beings directly engaged in combat, and they couldn’t imagine anything more than that? E.g. what would have been wrong with a more explicit cinematic projection of swords, (metaphysical swords,) lots of swords[2], being used at high speed to shape the space of possible futures(/pasts)? [0][1]. The vorpal blades went snicker-snack! (lightly modified).
Even a few seconds spread through the fight scene to give broader context would have been good.
[0] In context, minimizing/maximizing wars, perhaps, or perhaps just short-term survival.
[1] Good and evil Edward Scissorhands, fighting both for short-term survival and in a metaphysical topiary competition, where the topiary is homo sapiens.
[2] Ares did do lots of swords once, but in very boring way.

@MisterForkbeard:
Not to be confused with the Crisis on Infinite Earths, which was the same thing in the DC universe. I think both were the publishers’ attempt at reducing the number of active story lines, and worked for about as long as cutting back kudzu in Georgia.
Arguably the “New 52” was the same thing, though IMO most of the motivation for that was to come out with a lot of “Volume 1, Issue 1” comics for the collector market.

Fortunately, he’s being moved more and more to the sidelines, so hopefully DC will be able to do better going forward. Aquaman was encouraging on that front.

I got worried that the story was a hoax because some of the other stories on that site are pretty sketchy but, nope, Dr. Jonny Kim, decorated Navy SEAL and astronaut, seems to be for real:

I found him on NASA’s site, too.
Fair Economist
@Bill Arnold: I think a weaponry driven final fight would have made a lot more sense than the zappity-wappity one they had as well as looked better. It would fit better with the earlier story if Ares were “just” a superhuman fighter like Diana had been in the battlefield scene rather than something comparable to an alien spaceship. It would also fit better with the greek mythology sources too – gods do a lot of fighting in the Iliad but mostly with period weaponry and certainly not firing spinal mount beam weapons.

Wonder Woman is a really good movie, actually. It just has 5 minutes of derp right at the end that the director does her best to gloss over.

@Matt McIrvin:
Actually, the original Human Torch got brought into the modern Marvel Universe too. Originally, he was an android who could burst into flames. Johnny Storm, the FF Human Torch grew up reading comics about the original and named himself that in honor of the original, who was eventually brought back for a while.

@cain:
The original story (Avengers #200) so incensed Chris Claremont that he got permission to write a later Avengers Annual in which Carol returned and got to call out the entire group for letting her be carried off by her rapist (who had also used mind-control to temporarily make her think she was in love with him). IIRC, the Wasp originally thought the ending of Avengers #200 was wonderfully romantic.

Just as an aside, those rocks she is sitting on are just below the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. Took my kids there last summer for a little field trip because what kid doesn’t want to learn a bit about climate science while on vacation?

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! While that was the original origin for Vision’s body, it got retconned by John Byrne in West Coast Avengers (one of many, many stupid things Byrne was allowed to do with that series). The original Torch was revived and has been puttering around ever since. He was last seen in All-New Invaders.
Matt McIrvin
@TomatoQueen: Reagan-era America was nowhere near as welcoming, confident or loving as it portrayed itself as being. But one thing we did do then was officially welcome most refugees from the Communist world; it was good Cold War psychological positioning. The Republicans liked them because they tended to be reliable Republican voters, once they heard what Reagan said about the Communist governments they were fleeing.
Back when I still followed some Rose Twitter types, there was a thing getting enthusiastically retweeted around about how all the immigrants from the Communist world were evil bourgeois who were just whining about their well-deserved revolutionary dispropriation. It struck me as both ahistorical and kind of racist. Probably not true of, say, everyone fleeing the Khmer Rouge.

@Citizen Alan: ok, I give. Just don’t steal my Members Only jacket or my VF copy of Hulk #181 from me.

@Mnemosyne: Yeah, and a lot of modern sci-fi/action movies (with or without superheroes) have similar third-act trouble. Even Spider-Verse, for all its virtues, has an overly familiar “close the portal before it destroys the city” aspect to its final battle (though there’s a bunch of other stuff going on, and it’s so visually ambitious about it that it’s hard to fault for that).

I stayed at the Palmer once, during the renovation between Christmas and New Years. My room was an L-shaped closet, but you couldn’t beat the price.
Last week, I was in Chicago. For a couple of days, I was at the Ohio House, which is a little motel whose outstanding feature is free parking. The second time I was at the St. Jane, which is in the Carbide and Carbon Building. It was built in 1929 as the HQ of Union Carbide. Most recently, it was the Hard Rock Hotel.
St. Jane refers to Jane Addams, the Chicago social activist.

Maybe I’m just grumpy because Im up too early, but as admirable as Zorino is, I would feel better about supporting someone who had run for office before, at a state or local level. Her reason for running seems to be that she thinks her generation should be represented in the Senate — well, they’re also not represented in boardrooms, executive suites, boards of directors for national volunteer organizations, etc etc, and its because for the most part her generation hasn’t yet done enough work to demonstrate that it deserves a seat at the table.
