I Am Gonna Make It Through This Year If It Kills Me (open thread)

Looks like we could use an open thread; here’s a prompt: what are some songs that you like to listen to on New Year’s Eve or Day? I’ll start.

This Year by The Mountain Goats:

Kings by Steely Dan:

    @JR: OMG, I’m glad there are other DPlan fans that read this blog.

    Oh, and I should take this opportunity to note that I finally posted another installment of my webcomic.

    As the father of two young girls, apparently I listen to “Baby Shark” at the beginning of the year. And also every other day.

    Because I am an 80’s child, the obvious, “1999”.

    @Major Major Major Major: Yay! On my way. Happy New Year!

    Some time ago in a book thread you recommended Sandman Slim. Thanks for that, I’m enjoying it immensely and looking forward to the rest of the series.

    I didn’t even know New Year songs were a genre. I can think of only Auld Lang Syne, but I suppose that’s too obvious to list here.

    Tom Levenson says:

    The Steely Dan tune is all that.

    I’m old enough and given to depressing music enough to listen to Jason Isbell’s Vampires a lot on days that mark lost time.

    If I want to spit in the face of Death’s hourglass, I go for this.

    @chris: They’re fun books, though I’ll admit I’ve only read the first three.

    And it just might.

    Jeffro says:

    I listen to the stuff I usually listen to: lots of noisy punk rock!

    Whew…about to crash after a long day getting home from the Bahamas. Looks like this coming weekend’s NFL playoff games are going to be good ones! Here’s hoping the Colts can steal one from the Texans and that the Ravens knock out the Chargers!

    New Year’s Day? Not in a mood for a particular song but usually a band, I tend to listen to some U2 on the playlists.

    Also: pretty safe bet that once Twitler gets wind of the Mittbot’s op-ed in the WaPo, we’re gonna have ourselves a nice little GOP set-to. Long overdue, and may both sides be KO’d

    Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho says:

    @Tom Levenson: You might like Rake, then. Townes was one of the g*dparents of depressing music.

    Too full of chocolate to think. My mom gave me a pound of See’s Candy for Christmas and I vowed to take it unopened into the office tomorrow. Almost made it– tapped it at 3 pm today. I am so sick. https://youtu.be/HJwxj1fE2IY

    Do you like the Dead Kennedys?

  19. 19
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Jay: I think it is a solid analysis. My biggest concern is what he describes as item 3: the increase and escalation in provocative language on the Russian side. Including repeated claims that the Ukrainians are planning a chemical weapons attack. To me this is the most worrisome indicator. That Putin has his people out establishing a narrative he can use to justify escalating matters.

  20. 20
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Jeffro: Already happened. Parscale’s on the case. He’s not making sense, but he’s on the case.

    Victor Matheson says:

    A Great Big Worldโ€™s โ€œThis is the New Yearโ€ is really a gem of hopefulness and energy.

    Yeah, but can’t the entire world just call him out and say he’s full of shit?

  24. 24
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @zhena gogolia: I try not to make sense of it. I think he may have applied to much beard oil and its having some strange side effects.

    Jay says:

    @๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒŽ Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)ย  ๐Ÿ—ณ๐ŸŒท:

  27. 27

    @zhena gogolia: Yeah, that part really caught me flat-footed.

  28. 28
    Victor Matheson says:

    @PaulWartenberg: Really? You are listening to U2 on New Years and you canโ€™t even come up with one song you would like to hear?

    Might I suggest โ€œNew Yearโ€™s Dayโ€ by U2?

  29. 29
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Jay: If you’re talking about Parscale, I think he’s from Texas.//

    More seriously, I think his claimed success in data operations in 2016 was not the result of his talents, education, training, and hard work, but rather of that merry band of mirth makers at the GRU.

  30. 30
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Major Major Major Major: And now that Parscale has you flat footed, 2019 can kill you.

    @Jeffro:

    “What do you mean, I can’t fire a Senator?”

  32. 32

    @Adam L Silverman: Losing your dexterity bonus to AC can in fact kill you, it’s true.

    This time as…still farce?

    Gin & Tonic says:

    @๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒŽ Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)ย  ๐Ÿ—ณ๐ŸŒท: Sure, that, even with the Lollipop Guild, the Star-Twinkle Toddlers, the Sparkly Unicorns, etc. chiming in, doesn’t mean shit To Vladimir Vladimirovich.

    That said, people in Ukraine are more sanguine about this than “foreign-policy experts” in the West.

  36. 36
    Steeplejack says:

    @lahke:

    Good song. Everyone remembers older, matronly Ella and forgets her good early stuff.

    “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” 1938.

    @Adam L Silverman:
    Not that well, but that’s because nobody’s willing to properly stand up to Putin.

  39. 39
    Jay says:

    @Adam L Silverman:

    Yeah, Parscale.

    Are you sure heโ€™s a Texan, and not a Soviet Year X?

  40. 40
    Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho says:

    @Adam L Silverman: Ya think? Way too sophisticated to be plausibly Parscale’s shop on its own.

  41. 41
    Adam L Silverman says:

    @Jay: Just repeating here what’s been reported.

    Citizen_X says:

    And then Cathy showed up and we hung out,
    taking swigs from the bottle, all bitter and clean.
    Locking eyes, holding hands,
    twin high-maintenance machines

    Yeah, I’d go with the Mountain Goats for New Year’s, too.

  46. 46
    Steeplejack says:

    @Victor Matheson, @Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho:

    Eh, I thought P.W.’s comment was an oblique reference to “New Year’s Day.”

    Bet the over with most Balloon Juice commenters.

    Jeffro says:

    @debbie:

    โ€œWhat do you mean, I canโ€™t fire a Senator?โ€

    Oh he’s definitely saying that right about now…I love it…tweet about how Mitt was kissing his ass for the SoS job and/or also ‘couldn’t get the job done’ (or even more vulgar) in 2012 in 3, 2, 1…

  49. 49
    Jeffro says:

    @Adam L Silverman: EXCELLENT!

    Have at it, GOP surrogates for (giggle) Donald Trump and (tee hee) Mitt Romney! What a wussy slap-fest this is going to be!

    Jeffro says:

    @๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒŽ Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)ย  ๐Ÿ—ณ๐ŸŒท: Um that would be no. Also no Violent Femmes plz. Stooges, Dead Boys, Gang of Four, Against Me!, Descendents, Social D, X, that kind of thing.

  58. 58
    Jeffro says:

    @Major Major Major Major: @๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒŽ Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)ย  ๐Ÿ—ณ๐ŸŒท: Yup – I like the ones I listed, love the Clash. Agent Orange is good. “punk” is such a broad label these days, it doesn’t mean a lot, but lately I’ve been enjoying stuff from further and further back (in addition to just playing Warped Tour compilations)

  59. 59
    Jeffro says:

    @๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒŽ Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)ย  ๐Ÿ—ณ๐ŸŒท: Nah, I wasn’t really clear – those are ones I do listen to. My bad.

    No harm done. You ones you listed are pretty good. I’ve listened to at least a few of those, like the Descendants.
