Pretty hellish drive- it was only supposed to take about ten hours, but I figured eleven, but ended up taking close to 12 and a half because of all the construction and the volume of accidents. It was really quite awful. Lily, of course, was an absolute angel. This is our first long road trip together and she is just a boss. I stopped three times, and each time I let her out of the crate, she walked out, pooped and pottied, drank a little water, and then headed right back to the car. Such a good girl.
When I finally arrived, Seth helped me unload, and I found his precious angel Ellie lying on the couch looking ADORABLE:
The playlist for the drive:
Yes- Fragile
Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger
Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream
Outkast- Big Boi & Dre Present…
LCD Soundsystem- American Dream
Portishead- Mysterons
Pink Floyd- Animals
Police- Regatta de blanc
Dire Straits- Love OverGold
Elastica- Elastica
Beatles- Rubber Soul
Little Feat- Waiting For Columbus
Kendrick- DAMN.
I gotta get some stuff done and then go to bed. Another long drive tomorrow.
(((CassandraLeo)))
Sucks about the long commute, but at least you had a stellar playlist, I guess. Difficult to imagine improving much on those choices. Hope you enjoy your holiday.
dp
I’m headed in the opposite direction tomorrow, Louisiana to Niagara Falls and then NYC for New Year’s Eve. I won’t have control of my playlist — my daughter and her Broadway-heavy Spotify account will.
FlyingToaster
Excellent!
You’ve reported in, we know you’re alive, so go relax already!
TaMara (HFG)
Yay! Sweet Ellie! Glad you and Lily are safe. Just how did you explain this solo trip together to the other pups?
zhena gogolia
Anybody watching Kennedy Center Honors?
Miss Bianca
@TaMara (HFG): they know that Lily is The One. They don’t need to be told.//

Head to the pour house. Dead cover band reckoning playing right nowZ
Tim Illingworth
Definitely prefer Yessongs over Fragile, but then I tend to prefer live to studio anyway.
jl
Glad the road trip down there went well.
Did Cole remember the slide projector and pants?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@jl:
No.
(((CassandraLeo)))
@Tim Illingworth: If you haven’t heard Progeny, released a few years ago, do yourself a favour and track it down. It features about 70% of the source material of Yessongs, plus a full six other performances of each of the songs included in their set that year, restored with modern technology, and it is revelatory.
zhena gogolia
The Schuyler Sisters were great!
Doug R
Look at it this way-that construction zone you drove through earlier will probably be 3 and 3 lanes next year….or the year after.
John Revolta
@Tim Illingworth: tend to prefer live to studio
Thasswhy I played that Little Feat album about a zillion times. Am-azing.
zhena gogolia
Just as Chris Jackson was singing the most touching part of “One Last Time” — “I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat, in which I promise myself to realize the sweet enjoyment of partaking, in the midst of my fellow-citizens, the benign influence of good laws under a free government,” they showed Mnuchin’s ugly mug. The TV screen was favored with the bird.
CaseyL
You and Lily are bonded in ways that defy description or explanation.
Ellie looks like a love, and Seth is sweet to help you unpack. Is he the proprietor of where you’re staying? Is this the long-delayed stay at a beach resort, or something else?
If you’ve arrived at where you were going, why do you have another long drive tomorrow??
zhena gogolia
Pretty shabby treatment of Philip Glass — not even a film bio.
Ben Cisco
That playlist (or what of it I know) is tight.
First day on the new job tomorrow – YAY! It’s been a long three months, and I’m ready to get to it. It’ll be great to be busy again, and this time, not in support of manufacturing. No more nights, no more weekends, no more on-call, no more vulture capitalists!
Ben Cisco
Pitch meetings are tight: https://youtu.be/8NdCZGVZtXY
There are a slew of them, and they are hilarious!

@Ben Cisco:
Congrats, what a great way to greet the new year! Best of luck on the new gig.
Ben Cisco
@trollhattan: Thank you! Looking forward to it!
Aleta
@Ben Cisco: Congratulations.
Ben Cisco
@Aleta: Thanks! Every goal that I had at the beginning of the year got met. I’m home, working at a good job. More to aim for for next year!

Adam Lambert is killing it.
Patricia Kayden
@zhena gogolia: I’ll have to catch a rerun since Cher is being honored and I love her. It’s wild that Trump has to skip these honors since he’s so dang odious.
zhena gogolia
@Patricia Kayden:
You are in for a treat.
raven
I thought you were going to Sullivan’s Island, what long drive is next?
Mike in NC
This has got to be the worst week of the year to be on the roads. Wife took forever to return from the Richmond, VA area last week, so basically driving can suck anytime around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. That’s assuming great weather.
NotMax
@zhena gogolia
Gonna repeat this here as I cannot tell anymore which threads are moribund.
Dunno if you saw my late response to you re: Vanity Fair.
Pretty good and moves right along smartly. Got all but the final episode under the belt and no complaints.
Frances de la Tour as Aunt Matilda and Martin (Doc Martin) Clunes as Sir Pitt Crawley are top notch.
Amir Khalid
@Patricia Kayden:
The Kennedy Center Honors are better off without Trump. A lot of things would be better off without Trump.
Mike in NC
@Ben Cisco: Good luck!
Gin & Tonic
@raven: I think he’s headed for Miami.
zhena gogolia
@NotMax:
Yes, thanks, I saw your answer. I’ll have to make time to watch it soon. It’ll be hard to top David Bradley as Pitt Crawley, but Clunes is also a good actor.
zhena gogolia
@Amir Khalid:
He could never sit there and watch other people being honored and celebrated.
Tim Illingworth
@(((CassandraLeo))): I’m aware of it, but haven’t heard it yet. Looks like the easy (cheap) way is to get each of the 7 concerts as Amazon MP3s at $9.49 + tax each. When I have a bit of spare money…

See here.
How soon we forget. :)

So, John – did you listen to the single disc version of Waiting For Columbus, or the double disk with the extra goodies?

I drove hours in the rain today. Probably some of the worst driving conditions I’ve experienced in a long time. Torrential rain, freeway under construction so lines and markers are either missing completely or you can see both the old and new lines so you don’t know where the lanes are, so much rain it was ponding on the roads and we kept hitting standing water and sort of skidding, but it was hard to tell because the wind gusts were so high that our vehicle was constantly being buffeted around. Then in the middle of all that the sun sort of came out–yes, it was still pouring rain–making all surfaces reflective. I had to put my sunglasses on in torrential rain just so I could cut the glare and see at all. It was maybe 15 or 20 minutes of that kind of driving. Horrible. At least half the cars had their hazard lights on and no one could pull over because there were no shoulders because of road construction and all the exits were under water. I can’t remember the last time I’ve driven in conditions that bad. I’m exhausted. At least we’re all back safe.

Prosperity Burger season has returned to MacDonalds. It’s a McRib-shaped patty (beef or chicken, one or two) drenched in black pepper sauce, sold as a halal alternative in parts of Asia between Christmas and Chinese New Year. I have no idea why I brought this up.
Steve in the ATL
@Yarrow: yeah well even though it was sunny here I had to drive the wife to a MALL today
Amir Khalid
@zhena gogolia:
The guy before him used to host a White House dinner for the honoured artists every year. I miss that guy.

@Amir Khalid
As it is McD’s (eeww), if you eat one you’ll likely get to bring it up again, too.

Glad that you made it safe, Cole??
Have a good vacation.

If Trump did lower himself to attend such an event, they’d have to rename it the Kennedy Center Horrors.

It may be hygenic, it’s still mostly a vaguely palatable food-like substance.

@NotMax: Ah. Thanks, NotMax – I must have missed that one.
Cole in South Beach… makes me giggle. Or maybe the place isn’t the Sex Drugs Money Money Money hangout it was a few years ago.

Cole playlist question: what, no Cult???
Amir Khalid
@Jay:
In England, Boxing Day is the 19th matchday and the halfway point of the professional football season. It’s a big deal because all 20 teams play on the same day (other matchdays are typically split between Saturday and Sunday). Liverpool celebrated it with a fairly routine home win, 4-0 over Newcastle. They are the only club in the past decade to top the Premier League table on Christmas but not at the end of the season. This time they’re six points clear at the top, they’ve caught up to Man City’s goal difference, and more and more it looks like this season they will end that jinx.

I know most of the bands/artists on this playlist.
The former lead singer of Yes, Jon Anderson, went on to sing this narmtastic song, Do You Want to Be a Hero in 1986 for the movie Biggles: Adventures in Time.
J R in WV
@John Revolta:
We went to a Little Feat concert many years ago, because Bonnie Raitt was opening the show. We enjoyed Bonnie’s long set of blues, and after 2 or 3 songs by Little Feat, we left for home. Just didn’t do it for us.
Many years before that, I went to a Kinks show at the Spectrum (IIRC) in Philadelphia, with the Chambers Brothers opening. I was staying in Philly at the time, and really enjoyed the Chambers Brothers. They were kind of a home town band IIRC, and really rocked.
Then, after a long intermission, the Kinks fired up their set. It was sloppy and, um, not good. So I left after just a couple of songs, a solitary resister of bad music. Had a long night after that. So I guess I like bands opening for big names, sometimes, more than the big names.
Jay
@Amir Khalid:
Footie, right?
I’m not much of a Sportswatcher. Crazy Canucks in the ‘80’s when our skiiers went big or blew up Wide World of Sports style. Canucks in the Tiger days, then their Cinderella Year, then walked away when they traded away all the 3rd bench Players that had made the run possible. Whitecaps once upon a time.
I’ve always been more of a Player than Spectator, and as time went on, shifted away from team sports to solo. Now a days I mostly free climb and boulder.
Tim Illingworth
Also: Wot? No “St Stephen” for Boxing Day?
BruceFromOhio
A half-day drive requires an eclectic mix, and you have that covered easily.
Good call on the Pumpkins, and there’s nothing like Telegraph Road to take the mind off the ride.
M. Bouffant
@Amir Khalid: I know why: So I could link to this, which is tangentially relevant.
Death Panel Truck
@J R in WV: The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset” is the most beautiful song in the English language. Catching a stellar band on a subpar evening does not equal “bad music.”
