“Trump confides to friends he’s concerned about impeachment”. Donny Dollhand has no friends, just accomplices. And he’s reached the talking-to-the-WH-portraits stage:
Despite President Donald Trump’s public declaration that he isn’t concerned about impeachment, he has told people close to him in recent days that he is alarmed by the prospect, according to multiple sources.
Trump’s fear about the possibility has escalated as the consequences of federal investigations involving his associates and Democratic control of the House sink in, the sources said, and his allies believe maintaining the support of establishment Republicans he bucked to win election is now critical to saving his presidency…
The president has been on a days-long tirade, sources tell NBC News, lashing out at his own staff and lawmakers on Capitol Hill, frustrated by the threat of a Democratic House with subpoena power, an array of looming congressional investigations, multiple intensifying federal probes, a botched effort to find a new chief of staff and a potential partial government shutdown over a lack of funding for his top campaign promise — a border wall.
Trump has ranted about why no one around him is doing anything to stop any of it and vented about the lack of support he believes he has in Congress and within his own White House, the sources tell NBC News…
Nixon had strong support from every member of the GOP caucus… until he didn’t.
The progression of defenses:
1) It didn't happen.
2) Okay it did, but I wasn't involved.
3) Okay I was involved, but It wasn't a crime.
4) Okay maybe it was a crime, but not one of those really BAD crimes.
5) What is crime, even, except a social construct?— Aaron Blake (@AaronBlake) December 12, 2018
Trump’s campaign. Trump’s transition. Trump’s inauguration. Trump’s presidency. Plus Trump & family. All are now under state and federal criminal and civil investigations. This is much more damning than Watergate, and it is just getting started.

2. Because this probe has lasted 2 years, been slow and methodically, with lots of great journalism filling in the gaps, we probably know the broad outline of the Trump-Russia conspiracy. Team Trump will wave the lack of a closing "bombshell" as a red flag that Mueller failed
— Will Bunch (@Will_Bunch) December 14, 2018
4. Here's the reality we need to come to terms with: Congress and the American people had — by Trump's first few months in office — more evidence of criminality against the president than what was used to oust Nixon over Watergate in 1974
— Will Bunch (@Will_Bunch) December 14, 2018
9. The question going forward is whether what we already know — that a U.S. presidential election was won through fraud, theft, lying, illegal payoffs and other criminal acts — will have real consequences for the man who stole that election, Donald Trump.

Trump didn’t write that tweet. Among other things, he always misspells “counsel” as “council”.

Number 9, yeah. He stole the election by defrauding the American people, at the very least. (I’ll never be convinced that the Russians and/or the Republicans didn’t change the votes in those three strategically placed counties, but we’ll never know because no one ever will do the forensics to find out.)
And because that fraud succeeded, he’s can’t be indicted? Just because of a policy, not because of a law or the Constitution?
Nah. Won’t stand.
Nevertheless, I strongly doubt he’ll actually ever go to jail. Aristocracy has its privileges, after all. And we’ll be forced to keep Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and all those Federalist Society judges, for life.
Still, I have enjoyed this week, and expect to enjoy the weeks ahead.

@Geoboy: they won’t do that but if the Dems ever get the Senate back with the WH they should be ruthless and expand the USSC by 2 judges and add another circuit court in the West/Mountain West. It’s been a project of right wingers to dilute the power of the 9th circuit.. Pull a judicial version of gerrymandering and pull the bluer states from the 10th circuit court and the reorganize so that majority of states in the new circuit court are blue and the 9th remains liberal. Start the new court with a nice new slate of extremely liberal , very young and very qualified judges. No blue slip rule. Nothing. Don’t talk to me about politicizing the courts when the GOP has already done it.

They seem to be going with ‘Damn shame what the dirty feds did to poor Al Capone’ defense.
Which seems to be harder to pull off than one might have expected.
Giuliani messed it up. Then Hatch messed it up, since he tried the ill advised short cut of didn’t care and anything can be made up into a crime.
A quarter of the country is going to support Trump even if he goes down to WH lawn every day and shoots puppies and kittens in the head for fun. That is what The LORD wants, if Trump does it. Ultimately the corrupt mess the country has become, as exemplified by Trump’s success, can only be solved by big electoral wins by and for the good people.
But, speaking of corrupt messes, simply adequate coverage of Trump’s sketchy history, long history of lies and scams, would have very likely doomed his candidacy. But, it was hard to beat the ROI of getting viewers to watch an empty podium, or lectern, or whatever they used to broadcast. Some CBS (I think?) executive said their coverage was horrible for the country but great for them. US news media has to be reformed somehow. My first vague idea has been be to break up the corporate conglomerates. But I realize my first vague idea is half baked. CBS is an independent network, and the way modern media economics is working, ye olde tymey independent broadcast (and cable) corporations would go broke. So, I’m not sure what should be done.
jl
@Mai Naem mobile: I agree it’s a dangerous mistake to try to go back to the old rules and hope that the GOP won’t just pick up where it left off as soon as they can get a bare majority in Congress and start sabotaging democracy again. Especially if no consequences for all those in national GOP who have reduced the old rules to rigged fraud that effectively gives them the right to rule by a reactionary and malicious minority of white anti-scientific authoritarian bigots.

I have a question about Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, the Melanoma friend who got 25 mil from the inauguration slush fund for a party planning “business” that didn’t even have an office.
Shortly after the news of the payoff surfaced their friendship tanked. Do you think they came to a parting of the ways because Winston Wolkoff was supposed to kick most of that money back to Melanoma and reneged? Or did Melanoma demand a bigger cut of the action than originally promised, a classic Trump dirtbag maneuver?
FWIW, if one of my friends gave me a check for 25 mil we’d be BFFs for life—I’d braid her hair, smother her in moral support and listen to her boyfriend problems until my ears literally fell off my head.
Shitty people have shitty transactional friendships, obviously, but I can’t figure out what happened here—and the media isn’t going to investigate when they can get easy clicks churning out outrage bait about Baby, it’s Cold Outside.

The biggest problem now: where is that group of influential Republican Senators that will take the ride down Pennsyvania Ave. and explain to Trump that it’s time for him to go? Who is our Hugh Scott, our Barry Goldwater?

And RIP Bill Fralic, legendary Pitt lineman. He was a joy to watch and a great guy. Knew him a little in college and he apparently never changed from the cute, fun, down-to-earth guy I knew then. Just two weeks ago, he paid for his high school’s football team’s trip to the state championship, which they won. So young, only 56. Fuck cancer.

Remember, they didn’t take that ride until it was clear that Nixon was going to take the rest of the party down with him. It wasn’t some kind of selfless love of country that made it happen – it was self-interest. In other words, there will be no shortage of Republican Senators who want to protect themselves who will be willing to assume the mantle of “doing this for the country” if the time comes. (And some of them – oh, Ted Cruz or Mitt Romney, if they were to let them join the delegation – probably would enjoy doing it.)

@Ruff the Dog: IOW (I take it) if Combover Caligula makes it past 20.i.19 he will have “served” over half his elected term – at which point, were he to vacate the pResidency by causes natural or un-, Dense would be eligible to serve two full terms as POTUS in addition to the remains of Twitler’s term.
(It would then be the task of all decent USAns to ensure that the former Stupidest Member Of The House Of Representatives [SMOTHOR] occupies the Ovaltine Orifice not a day, not an hour, not a minute more than absolutely necessary.)

I’m hoping yesterday afternoon’s super secret appeals panel hearing was for a grand jury subpoena for Mike Pence, which will lead to an indictment of Mr. Pence for conspiracy with Russian interests, prior to any movement to indict/impeach Mr Trump. We need to get that monster out of politics first thing.
