Good Morning All,
On The Road and In Your Backyard is a weekday feature spotlighting reader submissions. From the exotic to the familiar, please share your part of the world, whether you’re traveling or just in your locality. Share some photos and a narrative, let us see through your pictures and words. We’re so lucky each and every day to see and appreciate the world around us!
Submissions from commenters are welcome at tools.balloon-juice.com
And, for those who use Healthcare.gov or your local state-based Exchange, please ensure that you’re covered for 2019. The Trump fuckheads reduced the sign-up period, so come the 15th, it’s all over, man!
Please, protect yourself and your family by signing up before the 15th. It won’t take much time, and the sooner it’s done, the better.
Ok – back on message – Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Today, pictures from valued commenter realbtl.
There is something about the weather there that makes for incredibly delicate icicles. Here is the latest crop I have been following over the last week or so. Call it a winter garden post.

I first noticed these last week. I have a metal roof so the icicles will slide a bit in the heat (hah!) of the day and then refreeze.

The longest ones dropped off but this one just keeps hanging on.

12-11 It is still hanging on though not for long. When everything is white or green these little gems are nice to look at.
Thank you so much realbtl, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Metal roofs make for really cool icicles.

Eh, what’s an icicle?

Never seen flat ones like that – Balloon Juice has so many interesting people! It sounds horribly cold, though.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: One of our rewards for enduring winter.

@OzarkHillbilly: We went out to Red Rock Tuesday night, pretty cold up there. I took pics, madame huddled with the dogs for warmth.

@Mary G:
Or angled ones either!

They can be so beautiful when the sun comes out after an ice storm, everything glistens and sparkles. Treacherous to be outside with them.

Very cool. I live in Manhattan so I see plenty of ice, but not many icicles. And I have never seen anything like those geometries.

Delightful!
Post more if they reappear. Nature bends, twists and adjusts, giving new perspective for us to the expected result.

Thanks folks, these strange ones happen mostly in the Fall when the temp swings are greater. 40º yesterday and all are gone.

That looks cold!

In the distant past when we had long lasting cold spells following really big snowfalls, as the warmth of the home melted the bottom of the snowpack on the roof, we would get really huge icebergs hanging from the house. After a few days they would reach the ground. If one fell on you it would cause an injury for sure.
Nice photos of goofy icecicles, I too have never seen them slide and bend like that. 2 of my 3 roofs are now metal, roofer buddy quit doing shingle roofs, he thought it was a disservice to his friends he was still willing to roof for.
