Nancy SMASH flipped all 7 targets in her home state. Not bad, not bad…

Woohoo!
Also too WTF was Melania thinking with those handmaiden Christmas trees?!?!?!1

A hopeful side benefit is that the scale of the win will put some fear into GOP Senators who are up in 2020.
Turgidson
Still disappointed Hunter and Nunes held on and that Audrey Denney didn’t get closer to the upset. But definitely a good result overall.
Ohio Mom
@MomSense: And why in the video of Melania inspecting her atrocious INDOOR red forest is she wearing a coat? Is the White House not warm enough for her? Can’t she get the thermostat turned up?
She was wearing a coat as she strolled through the White House in last year’s Christmas decorations video too.
Back to the topic, Very thrilled. I also hope that these extended voting counts, that go on for weeks after Election Day, get lots of publicity and are normalized. I want there to be widespread acceptance that accuracy, not speed, is what we’re going for.

@Major Major Major Major: The Trumps’ Xmas decors seem like sets for horror movies. Is there any rationale behind them at all??
I simply fail to see the point.
In my memory, conservative Christmas trees always have a star at the top of the tree. And WHERE IS THE MANGER SCENE? It’s either under the tree or on a table or something next to the tree.
And many of these families have a train set or lighted village scene under the tree.
Have Franklin Graham. Jim Bakker, John Hagee, …. been asked what THEY think of the Trumps’ Christmas trees?

@Turgidson:
While it certainly would have been better for Hunter to lose, his continued presence in Congress still does more harm than good to the Republicans, and the same goes for Chris Collins. I’m doubtful that either of them will complete their terms.
And in January Nunes will become a complete nobody.
Kraux Pas
@Schlemazel: Maybe she’s depicting the legal bloodbath her husband is about to undergo. It’s possible Melania is trying to act out against the administration by using design choices. Maybe the “I really don’t care” jacket was her statement on official White House policy.
Shana
@Ohio Mom: I thought that was weird too, but then I noticed that it seems she’s walking along the outdoor colonnade that runs outside the Oval to another part of the White House. Although she did seem to have her coat and gloves on while walking through the rest of the WH.

There really are red trees in the White House. They are not Photoshopped. You can watch the official video unveiling, if you have the stomach for it.
They are not the only trees, but they’re very prominent.

40 seats = Stable Genius winning!
Ohio Mom
@Shana: I’m pretty sure I saw windows on both sides of the hallway in the video, and Melania keeps her coat on during the rest of her wandering through the White House winter wonderland.
I rewatched last year’s video and she’s wearing a coat (draped over her shoulders, natch) in many of the scenes, including during a visit to the kitchen where the pastry chefs are baking cookies. It isn’t warm in a room with giant ovens roaring away?
The rest of the time she is wearing a big fuzzy sweater.
The other weird aspect of the videos is that Melania roams the White House in perfect solitude, except when she is consulting with staff decorators and chefs. Hardly conveys the sense that Christmas is a family holiday — or that the White House is a busy place.
How is your mother-in-law doing? Still holding on?
Emma
@Mnemosyne: Eeek. I saw a photoshop with images of handmaid’s tale costumes where the trees would be and I assumed… *scurries off to look* OH JESUS MY EYES. MY RETINAS ARE FALLING OFF!

So, in addition to defending these seats in 2020, we can target the three seats the Rs flipped, plus about 50 we didn’t get this time. In 2008 we grabbed another 20 seats. The Senate will be the big prize on the “undercard”, but the more we can pad our majority in 2020, the better we can withstand a first midterm under a D president.

California flipped 7 seats. Republicans held 14 of the 53 house seats here, and now they have 7 to Democrats 46. And I’m assuming we’ll have a special election in CA-50 before 2020.

@Turgidson: V. late reply, but although Ammar lost vs. Duncan Hunter, he also had coat-tails. Sam Abed (the RW asshole mayor of Escondido the entire time I lived there) LOST his bid for a third term.

All that gerrymandering and voter suppression by Republicans paid off, otherwise it would have been 60+ seats.
