Fun fact: I met an MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) for the first time at work a few days ago. He wasn’t wearing a trilby, but he was wearing those wide-brimmed hats that Dr. Mallard from NCIS wears, except with a strap. Oh and he was actually wearing a shirt that proclaimed to the world that he was an MGTOW. He looked like anyone else. I don’t know what I was expecting.
It’s also a shame men can’t wear hats that aren’t baseball caps anymore without being associated with weirdos.

@Gin & Tonic: Same. I have a 35 year old Aussie Akubra still going strong, some straw numbers, a wide brimmed rain hat and some caps. And toques of course. Best sunscreen there is.

@Steeplejack: Well, that article says it’s “undetermined”, not “false”, mainly because no source they know of cited actual sales figures to bolster the claim that sales dropped.
Here’s a more detailed debunking.
https://immortalephemera.com/42243/did-clark-gable-kill-the-undershirt/
The claims for how much of a drop off there was vary widely, and what dropoff there was may have been temporary and associated with a general drop off of clothing purchases due to the Great Depression.
Anecdotally, I had the impression during my own youth (1970s) that most men still wore undershirts, especially in a cold climate, and I was an oddball for not wearing them.

Stetson Pawnee Gun Club hat, in brown bison fur. Wide brimmed, NOT a cowboy (cattleman’s) hat, or Biily Jack hat. After the USAF, I have an aversion to black shoes and center creased hats. thanks

Re: hats. Lately I’ve been wearing an Irish flat tweed cap, mainly to keep my head dry in heavy rain as I detest umbrellas. The Irish know from wet weather.

@chris: I have an Akubra I need to have reblocked. It has gotten crushed as a result of moves over the years.

@A Ghost To Most: I actually looked it up before I did my comment. It is a very nice hat.
Yutsano
@A Ghost To Most: I don’t wear hats. That thing is gorgeous however.
A Ghost To Most
@Adam L Silverman: Akubras are beautiful hats.

Strictly anecdotal. One grandfather owned a shirt factory in Manhattan (or maybe more than one, I’m fuzzy on the details, he offed himself the same year I was born). Family lore is he ceased also manufacturing undershirts and stuck strictly to dress shirts right around the same time.
A Ghost To Most
@Yutsano: Thanks. I also got a hand-tooled leather hatband with buffalo nickels as conches, made by a family in Taos.

@Chetan Murthy: In jr high we learned that Panama hats did not come from Panama, they came from Ecuador. Odd thing to teach us in Social Studies in the early 60s.

What originally got me into comics was probably rediscovering the DCAU cartoons from when I was a kid.
Have greatly enjoyed reading them since.

@Gin & Tonic: my husband had a felt blank that he wore sometimes when I first met him. It made him look like a total goober, and various people who I suspect wanted him to look like a goober kept telling him it looked cute. It did not.
I almost threw it out several times, but he knows he’s not allowed to wear it around me or off the property. When I’m dead he can do what he wants, but I wish the moths would eat the damned thing.

@Gin & Tonic: We have a lot of actual baseball caps, for baseball teams, that do not have the square front top like truckers caps. (I’m not going to talk to Jay any more about this). If we go to a game for a team other than ours we tend to pick up a hat as a souvenir. I brought one back from the Salt Lake Bees after a short visit.
My husband bought a lovely flat Irish cap on the Dingle Peninsula, right from the “factory”. He wore it for years, he did not look like a goober in it, and he lost it sometime last year. I think that’s an excuse to go back to Ireland.

@A Ghost To Most: It was a gift from my grandmother a long time ago. I’ve dragged it from grad school to grad school, professorship to professorship, and posting to posting. When (if?) I ever get my stuff out of storage this time I need to get it to a haberdashers and have them give it some TLC.
opiejeanne
@A Ghost To Most: That is a very nice hat.

@Adam L Silverman: where does one even find a haberdasher these days, outside of Berwick Street or the Castro?
Jay
@opiejeanne:
I wear two beesball hats, a “no logo” tan cotton 1940s pattern soft cotton,
and a fleece lined 1940’s pattern no logo soft cotton with ear flaps.
The film “Major League” shows the adoption of the abominations called “baseball” caps.
The only other two hats I wear are an olive green Tilley for fishing and hunting, and an oiled felt fedora, ( Indianna Jones) for “going to town”.

I do a bowler hat when I’m out and about with the SO when she’s doing Lolita.

@Adam L Silverman: https://www.millerhats.com/store/Fedoras_Hats%20/134_The_Classic_Center_Dent_III <- I've worn one of these for many years. Unfortunately it took a walk a year or so ago after a bar gig so I'm going to have to get another one.
Love Miller Hats. I also have one of these: https://www.millerhats.com/store/Fedoras_Hats%20/134_The_Classic_Center_Dent_III that I wear for certain kinds of rock and roll gigs.
I have a hard time fitting hats, which makes buying them in stores nearly impossible; my head is larger than 98% of all human beings, and I can never find one that fits me in stores.

@Brickley Paiste: I have a friend that had the same opinion after hearing of that Guardian article, that it meant Hillary was going to run.
I made him read the article in detail, not just the headline. With the full quote, it’s obvious that Hillary was just plain talking about policy, not doing some Third Way b.s. to prepare for 2020. Even bet him $5.

If it’s any consolation, I am working hard to ensure that wearing a baseball cap will also associate you with weirdos.

@Ladyraxterinok: “During the anti-war movement on college campusses, someone wrote a what-if article–maybe for the Atlantic?– claiming that JFK would have easily been able to sell the Vietnam War to college students and that with him in charge all the college students would have cheerfully fallen in line.”
IIRC, younger people were highly supportive of the war, at first, just like the media.
What happened was year after year of casualties.

Great. Now my pop up ads are showing nothing but hats.

I once had a Stetson much like the Pawnee Gun Club hat, with a rattlesnake hat band including rattles. I believe it was sadly abandoned in a bar of low repute many years ago.
Especially sad as it was a gift from my sweet baboo!
Now I have a similar brown felt wide brimmed chapeau sans rattlesnake hat band, for formal occasions. Outdoors, of course.

Only Congress can make that change. Expect more litigation, and more losses for the Maladministration.
