A "nationalist" who decries "globalists" & Soros, who champions a racist conspiracy theory, who questions the IQs of prominent black Americans, who praises "fine" people among white supremacists/anti-Semites, & who promotes fear of immigrants & Muslims. Tell the full story. https://t.co/1wMFB5H4L4

Trump and his hardcore base are making it very difficult for the Maestros of Bothsiderism to blanket the Repubs’ hate speech in a warm fuzzy cloud of pap, but give Ross Doubthat and his fellow Very Serious Opinioneers full marks for trying!
Again, for the billionth time, "globalist" is a pejorative often used to describe Jews. https://t.co/c80iq2zaZT

Dude, the right accuses Soros of having collaborated with the fucking Nazis as a ten-year-old. And nobody tried to blow up David Koch with a pipe-bomb.

I think it’s important to be excruciatingly clear about this:
Everyone is allowed to say all of these things in any context that they want. It’s true that you may be *criticized* for what you say, but that’s not the same thing. https://t.co/LH6YdQfW93

Anti-media/elite animus is arguably the ideological glue that holds together contemporary conservatism. This was true before Donald Trump, and he exploited it far more aggressively and crudely than his competitors. There's no way he's not always going to act this way. https://t.co/lm4Nk7rzox

It makes me psychotic that the media never mentions Shelly Adelson in the Soros discussion.
Yes, democratic candidates get donations from a billionaire Jewish philanthropist but rape-publicans have their own rootless cosmopolitan billionaire and he’s donating about five times as much money as Soros.
Why is our Jewish philanthropist an issue but their Jewish philanthropist isn’t?
Finally we’ve found it—a topic the media won’t attempt to both-sides.

It is estimated some 95% of people have a natural immunity to the bacteria which can develop into Hansen’s disease. Bacteria, BTW, frequently carried by the armadillos prevalent throughout the southern U.S.

@opiejeanne: Of course, every good Xristian knows (or can be told by their preachers) the rules the Old Testament put in place for the treatment of Lepers so it’s a special scary disease with divine authority to shun and reject its sufferers.
The fact that, as someone pointed out on a thread last night, it’s not actually very contagious and easily treatable these days is irrelevant to that Biblical condemnation. As for Jesus, well he’s the bosses son so naturally he’s not bound by Daddy’s rules!

Open thread,
We rented a car to drive from the airport in Vienna to Graz, where we returned the car the next day.
When we picked it up we were told to inspect it, took a quick look in the park garage, didn’t notice anything (not really knowing what to look for, actually.)
When we returned it there was a tiny scratch, about an inch long and less than a quarter inch wide, on top of the rear bumper, in front of the luggage compartment. We have no recollection of causing this scratch.
We had only the basic insurance (big mistake?) and now Hertz is charging us 415 euros (close to $500) to repair this tiny blemish.
What can we do? It will go on my credit card at the end of this week.
Thanks for any help or sympathy!
OzarkHillbilly

Get some vaseline and bend over. Sorry, sucks to be you.
How well lit was the garage? If it was dim you might try challenging on that basis.

I am sitting up with my dearest Newfie who we will have to euthanize tomorrow morning. I had hopes to get him through the winter to see another spring but a came home to bloody diarrhea all over the downstairs. He is on three different pain killers for a failing hips and I think that his gut just can’t take it.
He refused his dinner and any way I dressed up his meds. So I know he is in pain tonight. But at least they won’t be tearing at his belly.
I will be at the vet when they open at 7, I hope the can do this on a walk-in basis. We had talked about doing this two weeks ago when he stopped using the stairs. But I hoped that I could make things work. He worked with me all weekend on a replacement ramp for the stairs up to the deck. I have the posts set, and was going to get the decking finished by next weekend. I just wish that we could have gotten him back up stairs where he really wanted to be.
I still remember the breeder telling us that living with a 140 lb dog is like living with a person, who leaves person sized shits in the yard. It is also true that they age like a person, if they can’t get up the stairs on their own there is no way you can get them there short of two nurses and a stretcher.
I really am not taking this well. I have had other dogs and lost other dogs but this one is so dear to me I cannot begin to express it.
Baloo came into my life right before I got laid off and I was able to spend the first 18 months of his life with him every day. Toward the end of that time we also went through our other dog developing pancreatic cancer. My vet was so wonderful since he knew we were just getting by on unemployment and my wife’s pay. There were lots of $400 visits that rang up as $65 “tech checks”. Best vet ever.
I don’t want to ramble on too much. I just want to say that this dog and I have seen some shit, and he has always been so sweet and so loving. I really wish I could do better by him. But big old bodies break. And I don’t know how to mend them.
What I can do is sit here on the floor while he gently rests against my leg. Hopefully he can get a couple hours of rest yet tonight. Such a small kindness is all that we have left at this wee hour.

Can the vet make a house call in the morning so you don’t have to try to transport Baloo?

@pat: have you googled this? There may be some travel site with ideas on this issue. This is the reason I always get the stupid rip off rental car company insurance. My insurance person always tells me it’s a rip off and not to get it.

Thanks. He is a special dog and he loves going places in the car, he will be up for the trip. He is good that way. But I am just sorry he has to go through this. There is no dignity in the ways death comes for us.

@Ukko: so sorry to hear, terrible to lose our beloved pets.
Aleta
@Ukko: I’m so sorry. I hope your touch and presence has lessened the pain signals for him during the night. I believe it works that way. Glad he can lean on you now. They’re so constant in taking some of our weight whenever we need. (We had possible bad news yesterday about our wonderful irreplaceable dog. My sympathy is going out to you. )

@Ukko: We asked our vet to come out to the car so our previous dog could stay in the other place that felt like home to him. Fortunately he was able to do that.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever read. We are doing similar at our home, not quite as far down the road but def looking your way. They know it, too. They know you’re caring for them and it’s a great comfort for them. Connection and communion til the end. My heart goes out to you. And, him. This is our third dog. And, survives my son. It’s his dog. Have a lot of admiration for you,

@Ukko: Tears are streaming down my face as I read this, and it’s now 8:15 my time, so you have surely been to vet and have already said goodbye. My heart breaks for you. Losing any beloved pet is beyond hard; losing your doggie or kitty soulmate is just devastating.

@pat: How did you pay for the it? Many credit cards offer supplemental liability insurance for rental cars (if you use the card for the rental). I’ve used mine more than once – it really saved my bacon when I backed a car hard into a bollard. That error resulted in a couple thousand dollars in damage.
Ukko
Just by way of update, we let Baloo go about 8:30 this morning. We had to wait for the vet to get into the office, the vet techs and the rest of the staff took wonderful care of us all until then.
Baloo had so many friends and admirers at that office, they were visibly sad as well. Such a gentle soul. He touched so many people I never even knew about. Now on to figuring how navigate the gaping hole in our lives.
Thanks for all your support, it helps and I appreciate it.

@Ukko:
Thanks for the update, so glad they are a compassionate bunch, most vets are vets because they love animals. It’s so hard to type when you can’t see what you’re doing.
We’ve all the pet lovers been there before. Thank you for taking such good care of your good dog! He knew you loved him and were doing all you could for him.

@pat: Same thing happened to us in England, and we BOUGHT the ripoff insurance but they charged us the equivalent of $600. It was one of the big three American rental companies but I can’t remember which. They said the insurance we bought didn’t cover the scratches on the wheel covers for some weird reason, and we should have gotten the other ripoff policy they offered. That’s the only time we’ve ever bought the insurance.
Anyway, when we got home the charge had disappeared from our credit card. I don’t know why and when I called the card company they said they had no record of the amount being charged to the card.
@Ukko: @Ukko: I’m so sorry to hear this. You did the right thing, but it is so very hard to lose them.
