Lord Smallgloves threw himself another campaign rally in West WTF Virginia last night, and the indefatigable Daniel Dale was there to live-tweet…
Trump says he gets "hugged backstage" by miners, big tough guys, and asks them if they want to make "little delicate computer parts," but they say no, they wanna mine coal. (The miners were not crying this time.)
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 29, 2018
I’m beginning to sense a theme for the evening…
!!! Trump on Kim Jong Un: "I was really being tough and so was he. And we would go back and forth. And then we fell in love. No really. He wrote me beautiful letters. They were great letters. And then we fell in love."

I think the reason the Republicans don’t react violently to such statements — like they would have if Obama had said it — is because they don’t consider the current POTUS to be a serious person. https://t.co/nYyZUdJOBX

Back in August, commentor Kindness had a comment I find relevant here:
Trump’s ‘base’ isn’t the traditional Republican base. It’s more like a World Wrestling fan club. They act like it too. So, you have a slice of Americana that loves professional wrestling, and there is a Venn diagram overlap with Trump’s base. I suspect those two circles overlap a bunch…

In which Trump the teacher shows us we can never be to old for love…
Starfish
Some wrestling fans are aware that wrestling is fake. They also understand that a lot of wrestlers have hard lives and die young. I don’t think that Trump’s fan base is aware of the plight of the working class the way some wrestling fans are.
Also, wrestling is now on the SyFy channel so there are strange things about this fan base that I do not completely understand.

I’m facebook friends with a retired wrestler, there’s way too many trump fans among the wrestlers as well.

@Starfish: Not at all. Watch Max Landis’s ‘Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling’.
Wrestling is opera combined with sheer fantasy and astonishing, decade-long wacky storylines. It’s way more fantasy than sci-fi but it absolutely belongs on a ‘creative reality’ channel and NOT with regular ‘sports’ sports.

Speaking of weird, there will be TWO game 163 in the 2018 baseball season. For those who might be interested in such arcana.

I would sometimes work Saturday mornings at WMC AM/FM/TV when the wrestling show was airing live. 90% of the time the building was empty except for the people keeping the place on the air, so it was just this quiet low key place to work. Then on Saturday mornings the hordes would come in. Happily they came directly into the TV studio through an outside door and AM/FM studios and TV master control were all upstairs well away from them. I’d always stay late and cut extra commercials if I knew I was getting off work at the same time wrestling was finishing.

Trumpov’s been a wrestling heel his whole life, and it has worked quite well for him.
Let’s beat on the GOP Congress for thinking it’s okay for the ‘heel’ to lead our country.

Kim writes the best beautiful letters. They’re even correctly spelled and punctuated. Trump keeps them in a scrapbook and shows them off to fanboys like Lindsey Graham.

@Mike J: When I broke my back in 1974 I spent 2 months in Grady Hospital in Atlanta and there was a dude there who was certain pro rasslin was real. It was the fist time I’d met someone who bought it and it was stunning. Another guy on the ward had his leg in traction a pin through his knee. It slipped or broke and they came right on the ward and drilled into his knee and reset it. The sound was excruciating and mr wresting thought it was hilarious. Be had two broken legs and he bitched and whined about wanting to go home so finally they said ok. They took him down to the casting room and, when they brought him back, they had him in a cast that went from his chest to his knees with a hole for his privates and a bar that held his legs apart. He didn’t realize he was going to be flat on his back for months. THAT was hilarious and I know there is a lesson about rasslin in there!

@raven:
How are you feeling?
raven
@zhena gogolia: Same. We have guests so I went to the bot garden, art museum and wild Peruvian joint this after noon. I feel really old because I’m walking very gingerly trying to no fall. I’ve done the exercises that usually make the vertigo vanish but they don’t seem to be as effective this time.

If it’s not better in the morning I’m putting in a call to my doc.

My uncle was a pro wrestler in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. I won’t name him because it would dox family names who would rather not deal with it. He would return to Baltimore every year for my grandfather’s birthday/family reunion. He always brought current press releases, etc. He always emphasized how much “bullshit” they were. He was a great, liberal guy who made a good living while having fun. He traveled the world and showed up every year in a new convertible Cadillac. He helped me, a troubled young guy, tremendously.
spudgun
I hate to be so, I don’t know, vengeful-sounding, but if it’s true that those coal miners sneered at “making little delicate computer parts”…I mean, if they can’t see where the future is going, if they have absolutely NO interest in it, then they deserve everything they get. NO SYMPATHY.

@dexwood: Cool story.

@Starfish: I think that some wrestling fans know it is fake is a major distinction from the fans of Agent Orange.
in my case there are many and I’m not sure I understand much of anything about them. Except that lots of them are very aggrieved about something (they may not know what it is), mean spirited and vindictive. He is like their spirit animal and they are enthralled.

So Trump is in love with Kim Jong Un. Here’s my advice to him. Divorce Melania, bring Kim to the US and get married. Then he can tweet us the details of the wedding night. Have it on PPV for all anyone cares, just resign as POTUS.

@raven: I wonder if that’s it? Vertigo totally sucks. I will watch for that when I get mine.
Doc & I changed a med dosage. When I was trying to find what had changed from prior to the vertigo that was all I could think of. I wrote to suggest that and doc replied “there’s a non-zero chance that’s it, but it probably isn’t it.” I told him I was changing it back, and within a week the vertigo was gone. We still chuckle about it.
I hope yours resolves soon. The meds I used for it didn’t help.

@Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho: It was a couple of weeks ago so I really doubt it but I just had my eye exam and that was coo, blood pressure is awesome as usual so I’m stumped.
Ruckus
@spudgun:
Not everyone can look into the future. But some only have eyes in the backs of their heads, they can only see into the past. They are afraid of change, to such an extent that it clouds every idea and decision they make. Their grandfathers mined coal, their fathers mined coal, they mined coal. Coal fired up the trains, it fired up their stoves and it fired up the generating plants. And there is really not a lot of anything else that was big in WV. The country was and may still be beautiful but it’s been strip mined to extract most every seam in the ground. It isn’t if they want to mine coal and are’t being allowed, it’s that no one wants to use it and there isn’t much left in the first place. It’s no different with steel mill workers or that car factories don’t employ anywhere near the numbers they used to to build fewer cars/trucks. No one has really done anything for them, maybe night classes to teach them some other work that there are too many people for. And not enough jobs. And no one is explaining coal to them now, except the shitty owners, who have lied to them for decades, at least no one they will listen to.
What kind of work would you think they could be trained to do in WV?
We are a nation of settlers. Few of us ever seriously consider leaving the US. Few of us seriously consider moving more than a few hundred miles. People from other countries will walk for days/weeks in the hope of finding something better, most of us won’t walk a mile to the store.

I was going to make a snarky comment about our immigrant ancestors and their long journeys across the oceans and plains, but then I remembered there are many reasons people can’t or won’t move (finances, family ties, disability, etc). Still, if one has the means and the wherewithal, relocating should be the first option. Whining won’t bring the jobs back or bring them to you.

I love good wrestling, where dynamic athletes that can talk put on a show in the ring that gets me to suspend my disbelief about the outcome being (almost always) pre-determined.
I think a lot of Trump fans would have been ECW fans who were only in it for the trashiness and the violence. Actually, many ECW fans knew good wrestling despite half the act being trashy as hell. Trump fans only get excited when someone takes an unprotected head shot with a chair, and yawn at long sequence of well executed countermoves.

Took my 11 year old grandson to a wrestling match this past spring. He’s a big wrestling fan. It was a fun time and good entertainment. I couldn’t tell how many if the adults took it seriously but none of them seemed especially interested in who won. Most of them did seem to know the wrestlers and their storylines and would lustily boo or cheer them. The crowd was good-natured, the wrestlers would interact with folks, the matches we’re definitely displays of athleticism and showmanship. It was an enjoyable evening.
