since I get no signal at home, the phone is 98% of the time turned off. I don’t get messages.
Once I was in Houston in a rental truck, with my phone on to find next address for errands. Suddenly an Amber Alert broadcast msg was on the phone, then I recognized it described my rental truck down to the plate number…someone spoofed a connection to my phone well enough to put that Amber Alert on my phone.

So just over a week ago, we were brutally reminded of how spoiled we have become as citizens of the golden age of household technology, an age where we live comfortably in a house that is heated or cooled to our comfort, no matter the season. And an era where if we want to heat up our coffee or tea, or reheat some leftovers, or quickly thaw that steak from the freezer, we just pop it in the microwave.
Which miracle device decided to die a week ago in our kitchen. Talk about culture shock.
I often muse that much that goes to the roots of the American dissociation from reality that seems to have infested our national consciousness is a result of the cocoon of comfort in which most Americans live. Most of us live in safe houses, kept warm or cool to our taste, we don’t have to worry about the rain getting us wet, or where our next meal is coming from. We watch TV, which for decades has been dominated by “reality shows,” and yes, that is in quotes, because they are anything but reality, they were just a cheaper way to produce pablum for the masses. As a result, we now have an incompetent product of that TV wasteland as our president.
Go figure.
All of the above is one of the reasons we cut the TV cord over a decade ago, with zero regrets. If you have the Internet, Netlflix, Amazon Prime, Acorn TV, and MHZChoice and a Roku player, you have access to so much a la carte entertainment you will never thirst for a couple of hours of relaxation.
But living without that microwave is turning out to be a real downer. A new one is on order from Lowes, will arrive in about five or six days. Found an 800 dollar plus Kitchenaide on sale for almost half price and free shipping, and Consumer Reports gave the brand high marks for not falling apart in the first five years of use. Which is a whole other discussion sometime, the old microwave was 20 plus years old and still working till it finally died.
I guess we will just have to continue to rough it till the new one arrives.

But folks should understand, you do not get a deal with just a promise of singing. In order to get a deal, you must first lay put every detail that you will share. Often, prosecutors will say, “we already have that, you better have something better.” And before you go into the courtroom and plea, you are debriefed by the FBI making false statements a new crime. Sometes, you even have to go to the Grand jury before the plea is finalized.
Mueller already has what he needs from Manafort, under oath, in a form that could be used in court even if Manafort dies tomorrow.

Cell phones are a step back from privacy after we had regained some of it with answering machines. The first telephones were owned only by the rich, who did not, as a rule, deign to answer them, any more than they answered the door when someone knocked. That was the servants’ job; it was unthinkable that anyone with access to a telephone had the right to interrupt your life, at any time, and speak to you, an Important Person. When phones became ubiquitous, manners evolved to the point where NOT answering a phone was considered rude. (“Somebody GET THAT!”) Except, of course, in certain intimate moments, when “Let it ring” was loaded with meaning.
Answering machines restored some privacy: “I’ll see who it is before I pick up.” Cell phones yanked that away, and then some: One was always on call. Then we got some back when the number of the caller became available. It’s been an interesting yo-yo-ing of social mores.

But to force one’s spouse into swap meets with strangers after she has not recovered from physical brain damage and has no capacity for decision making is vile and unspeakable beyond belief. She needed a protection order to keep the monster away from her at that point in her life.

That’s what we do, Samsung Android phone, charge last weeks lying in the console of the daily driver, which we drive twice a week or so. Turned off til we a) have a connection; and b) need to make a call; or c) look something up on the web.

For the record, I think Trump will find that the reason he knows about Obama’s “57 states” slip of the tongue is because it was all over the news media at the time, with conservative outlets in particular doing a lot of pointing and laughing.
I will also add that I seriously doubt Trump knows how many states there are. For real. Plus the other day, he was coloring a US flag at some event at a school or something and was using a blue crayon to color in the stripes.

@raven: That’s great news! We knew your lovely bride would not let Lil Bit eat in an uncomfortable, unattractive chair. So we’ll be expecting a link to the upgraded version.
I’d surely be waffling about a hot muggy Dawgs game even after last year. And I’d give myself a tropical storm pass, since it’s sorta kinda in the neighborhood.
Also, too, I want to grow up to be Kay.

So if Trumpov texts the entire nation via cell phone, will it break the internet when 50 million citizens simultaneously text “fuck you” in response?

@low-tech cyclist: Another problem with over-the-stove beasts is they tend to be overpowered – 1400 w. At least the cheaper ones (lime my Galactic Empire model) have no way to adjust the power except running the magnetron for whatever percent of the time out of every 30-second chunk. When you’re typically nuking small portions you have to get really creative with time vs power to avoid explosions. And I’ve never seen a cookbook written for the more powerful virgins – everything’s for 900-1000 w. Grrrr….

It is possible that drumpf is color blind. How would we know? And would he ever admit that he wasn’t perfect? Yeah I didn’t think so.
An E7 electrician I served with in the navy was colorblind. Working on color coded wiring was a bit of a struggle for him. And current electricians were checked for being colorblind as was I as an electronics specialist. But he had over 25 yrs in at that point and when he enlisted they never checked.

@Lapassionara: Mueller needs Manafort to come clean on one critical subject: Why Pence? & how is Pence kompromated? No sense in striking one Russian asset out of the White House when an even more obedient one is in the on-deck circle. (NB I doubt Bobby 3Styx is concerned about Dense’s theocratic leanings – or at least, concerned enough to want to move him out of the line of succession because of it.)
My ill-informed guess is that the Special Prosecutor already has sufficient intel on VPOTUS to put him away for a long time – or, more to the point, persuade him to do an Agnew – but the IC is not willing to burn sources & methods in order to do so until Mueller has exhausted every other means of obtaining the evidence. Hence, Manafort.
And that’s where it gets ugly. If Dense is a sleeper agent, now that he’s so close to reaching the WH Vlad will probably pull out all the stops to get him there – including suborning someone in Manafort’s prison protection detail to shut his mouth forever. /jmo

What about the other 3+ billion women in the world? Did BK rape them? They haven’t come forward and said he hasn’t.
And of course we aren’t all that concerned, in this context, with the women he says he hasn’t raped. It’s a very strange construction to me, a list of women he hasn’t raped/groped/fondled/assaulted, what springs right to mind of course is that there is some number that he doesn’t want anyone to talk to. Or that these 65 women are the only ones he’s had any contact with in his entire life. The complete list as it were. There’s probably lots of women that the CBS guy didn’t stick any body parts down their throats. Of course they live in other countries.

Like everyone else, I don’t answer calls where I don’t recognize the number. When you do phone banking for a political campaign, you reach maybe 2% of the numbers you call because of this. I did some phone banking for the primaries here and one person who answered the phone was an elderly woman who’s husband had died that morning; the last thing she needed was me asking who she was going to vote for. My conclusion from doing phone banking is it is terribly inefficient, canvasing is much better, provided people answer their doors; my husband and I have a secret ring pattern with our neighbors, so we don’t tend to answer the door either. It makes me realize just how hard it is for a campaign to reach voters.

@Eric U.:
Disagree – IMO “most of us wonder about Manafort” because his testimony might be critical in (a) putting the known bastards behind bars and (b) showing the Special Prosecutor where to look for evidence of further wrongdoing to be used in putting even more currently unknown bastards behind bars. E.g., he could be the key to finding out who Pence is beholden to & why Manafort went to some lengths to install him on the ticket.
So far (IIUC) no one has been waxed who is either a US citizen or in the US. That may well change as the stakes ratchet up – e.g., if it turns out that Pence is beholden to Moskva & (trigger alert: broken record) Vlad’s endgame is to allow Trumpolini’s removal in order to install him as POTUS (to general relief), then the permanent removal of anyone who can connect the former Stupidest Member of the House of Representatives to Russia would become more attractive to the Kremlin the closer those plans seem to be to coming to fruition.
