A Quick Explanation

And..we’re back.

Folks, we’ve had a few issues today relating to the change from our old CDN to the new one. A CDN makes the site faster by storing lots of the content you download (pictures, code, formatting, etc) in multiple places across the world. This means that you get a fast copy of non-changing stuff served from this more-local source along with new content from the server such as comments or new or edited posts.

So, sorry for the issues – things should settle down. I wasn’t touching anything today, this was more of a side-effect from some settings I should have changed before it became an issue. Their system allowed some slop and so I was sloppy. My apologies!

Open, non-site-related Thread!

ETA: The site will be a bit sluggish the next 12-24 hours until I rebuild the CDN setup and get it working again. I wanted to let the dust settle before I take another step!

  41. 41
    germy says:

    @JPL:

it’s almost dark how does he know she’s a police officer?

He doesn’t. All he knows is someone has entered his apt and is yelling at him to put his hands up. Last thing he is expecting. Before he can even process what is going on, she fires.

There was a red mat on the floor in front of the door. Why she didn’t notice this, I’ll never understand. All the cop TV shows make them look like master detectives.

  42. 42
    MisterForkbeard says:

@JPL: Now, THAT actually makes sense though. Not that I believe her, but that allows her to make it a ‘senseless tragedy where the police officer killed somebody that didn’t deserve but was legally in the clear” situation. It’s not a horrible defense for her.

From her perspective: She goes home, sees a scary black dude in her house. She draws, starts giving him orders. He refuses, she’s threatened, she shoots him.

From his perspective: Crazy lady breaks into your house in the dark, (possibly) waves a gun and you and starts yelling. You don’t obey the assaulter’s orders.

Again, don’t believe her at all but that’s an actual defense rather than the nonsense we had before.

John Bolton threatens war crimes court with sanctions in virulent attack

John Bolton, the hawkish US national security adviser, has threatened the international criminal court (ICC) with sanctions and made an excoriating attack on the institution in a speech in Washington.

Bolton pushed for sanctions over an ICC investigation into alleged American war crimes in Afghanistan. He also announced on Monday the closure of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) office in Washington because of its calls for an ICC inquiry into Israel.

The United States will use any means necessary to protect our citizens and those of our allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court,” Bolton said.

He said the Trump administration would “fight back” and impose sanctions – even seeking to criminally prosecute ICC officials – if the court formally proceeded with opening an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by US military and intelligence staff during the war in Afghanistan or pursued any investigation into Israel or other US allies.

Irony is not only dead, Bolton is violating the corpse in broad daylight.

Fuck Tesla and Musk can screw himself.

In October 2017, Vaughn received a phone call at home that he was being fired by Tesla due to two poor employee performance reviews in a row. He provided his separation agreement with Tesla, which cited “failure to meet performance expectations” as the sole reason for termination. Vaughn said his review scores were changed afterward to warrant his job termination, while the positive comments from his supervisor in the review remained.

Vaughn provided a copy of his employee file and his last two employee reviews. In the reviews, his supervisor calls Vaughn an employee who “does what’s right for the company as a whole” and “can always be counted on by team members to both show up (attendance) and get the job done”, yet his review scores are low rated. In previous employee reviews (January to June 2016, June 2015 to December 2015, and January 2015 to June 2015) before management discovered his role in unionization efforts, Vaughn received high scores, which resulted in promotions.

The supervisor who conducted Vaughn’s last two performance reviews (July to December 2016 and January to June 2017), Tarus Starks, confirmed the review scores were lowered by upper management. “When Dezz came to work under me, his performance was super positive,” Starks said. “I was about to train him for back-up lead.”

“At Tesla, we strive to be a fair and just company, the only kind worth being. Performance reviews result in promotions and occasionally in employee departures,” said a Tesla spokesperson in an email. “No one at Tesla has ever or will ever have any action taken against them based on their feelings on unionization.”

@TenguPhule: “If you even investigate us in a non-binding way we’ll attack you, criminally prosecute you and impose sanctions” is… about as awful and corrupt as I’d expect from the Trump admin. He *knows* we aren’t participants in the ICC, right?

Oh God, I am such a stupid nana-head.

I lost my DL someplace, fell out of my pocket or something and just went online to renew it, and got sucked into a fake DL replacement site. Third party, extra charge for the DL if you ever get it. They wanted to keep the $3.99 “service fee” and I asked for the supervisor. Repeatedly. The guy talked over me, louder and louder until I told him I’d report the site to the WA AG if he didn’t let me speak to his supervisor. Kept saying it’s not that much money, it’s only $3.99. Fuck that, it’s a 20% fee on the cost of the DL replacement.
He finally said he refunded it all to me. Service charge my ass. The charge was still pending, it hadn’t been processed yet, and it’s a program that does the work. I told him I’d be checking and I’d come after them if he lied to me. I will, with the backing of my CU. They don’t take stuff off of no jerk with a script in a boiler room.

And now I’m still so pissed off I’m going to be useless for a while.

  50. 50
    MisterForkbeard says:

@TenguPhule: Yeah, I know. Low expectations and all.

It’s just SO DUMB. The ICC *can’t* punish Trump except in minor PR ways – or, I suppose making foreign travel difficult. His base would probably love it if they ever did indict him. But he immediately goes whole-hog crazy and starts threats. Partially because that’s just what he does, but also because he can’t abide the idea that other countries aren’t respecting him.

  51. 51
    TenguPhule says:

“I don’t pay a lot of attention to the news, ’cause they don’t tell you the truth anyway,” he said, echoing a sentiment common among the Trump faithful about the fourth estate, or the “Fake News Media”, as Trump calls it.

Knight gave no credit to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.

“It’s just bullshit,” he said, rejecting not only the idea that the president colluded with Russia to sway the election in his favour, but the notion that Russia interfered in the election at all.

“The people of the United States ain’t gonna let that happen,” he said.

For Knight, none of the endless scandals that seem to shake Washington and east coast media on a weekly basis register. All that matters is that Trump “went in to make America like it’s supposed to be”.

“Mike is a really Christian, straightforward guy,” Maxey said. “I’m not sure we need Mike Pence as a president. If you could cross Mike Pence and Trump, you would have the ultimate president, right?”

While he wished Trump would “stop tweeting” and provide a “more stable work environment”, Maxey extended grace to the man he voted for as “the first person to be president that’s not a politician; he’s a businessman”.

“My investments are through the roof and unemployment is at a record low,” he added, praising Trump’s economic policies.

Maxey anticipated questions about racism and pre-empted them.

“I am not a racist,” said Maxey, while sharing his views on immigration. “I am not against immigration. Some of my best friends are black.”

Tullos segued into a broader discussion of immigration.

“The point,” he said, “is the only way you’re gonna cure the problem is to build the wall, whether it’s a real wall or an electronic wall or whatever it is.”

Even though he said he was motivated to vote against Clinton rather than for Trump, Tullos – who watches Fox News and listens to Rush Limbaugh – couldn’t think of anything Trump had done in office that he was unhappy about.

The job Robert Mueller has done as special counsel, though, was a different story. Mueller, Tullos said, his quiet demeanor giving way to Trump-like rage, “is totally phony … totally deep state … obviously doesn’t care anything about his country … [he] emboldens our enemies [and] borders on being a traitor”.

Back in Laurel, Roxanne Dunn, a first-grade teacher and New Orleans native who moved to the city four years ago, said she had not heard about the op-ed. It didn’t surprise her, though. Everyone is out to get Trump, after all.

She said she voted for Trump because the children she teaches at Waynesboro Riverview school – about 30 miles from Laurel – are “some of the poorest children in the country” and that “we need to take care of our children before we take care of illegal children”.

Asked what she makes of accusations that Trump voters are motivated by racism, she replied: “Obama to me caused a lot of racism in his identity as president. Donald Trump took that on.

“I teach in a totally black, federally funded school. Everything is given to them. Breakfast, lunch – there are no parents. Get ready when the grandmother dies, because when the grandmother dies, you think it’s bad now, it’s going to be worse.”

In her school, she said, “we have no thinkers” or “dreamers”.

“Nobody’s sitting in my classroom going: ‘Hmm, I wonder if I had a rocket ship, what would I do or invent?’ They don’t do this. They’re worried about what they’re gonna eat, where they’re gonna sleep, who’s gonna pick them up.”

Dunn cited no ways in which Trump’s presidency has alleviated those issues. Nevertheless, she said she felt “very good” about his presidency because “the economy is growing”.

Does she, I asked, believe, like Trump, that the press is the enemy of the people?

“To a certain degree,” she said, “yes.”

It’s all fake’: in Trump’s heartland, talk of White House chaos rings hollow

@JPL: Oh, don’t get me wrong: There are a number of holes in her story and I don’t think anyone should believe her. But this is way better than before, where “I got into the wrong apartment and thought the occupant was robbing me so I shot him”. It at least notionally makes sense and doesn’t make her negligent outside of the initial mistake of going to the wrong apartment, which lots of people have done.

<– This is what I expect her lawyer to say, basically. It's a better story that she had before by a mile and leaves her *less* culpable.

    TenguPhule says:

The Trump administration, taking its third major step this year to roll back federal efforts to fight climate change, is preparing to make it significantly easier for energy companies to release methane into the atmosphere.

Methane, which is among the most powerful greenhouse gases, routinely leaks from oil and gas wells, and energy companies have long said that the rules requiring them to test for emissions were costly and burdensome.

The Environmental Protection Agency, perhaps as soon as this week, plans to make public a proposal to weaken an Obama-era requirement that companies monitor and repair methane leaks, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times. In a related move, the Interior Department is also expected in coming days to release its final version of a draft rule, proposed in February, that essentially repeals a restriction on the intentional venting and “flaring,” or burning, of methane from drilling operations.
