Doing some background reading for work, I came across this lovely bit: “Large earthquakes are, fortunately, not excessively common. Additionally, controlled experiments are out of the question.”
Can’t you just feel the disappointment in that second sentence?

Procrastinating, eating the last of the season’s Palisade Peaches (best damn freestone peach around), taking a break from the madness. Had a really nice job interview – really more of a “so would you be interested” conversation – with the performing arts center downtown. Pay’s for shit, but it would make a nice supplement to my current income, and I’d have a lot of opportunity to help try and grow a small arts organization into a slightly larger one – seems to be my new mission in life!

Just an FYI post because it is the season for delicious corn on the cob! Remember to keep the cobs away from your pups. Lulu, my Atypical Cushing’s / Sensitive Liver beagle – She got hold of one yesterday and had happily chewed up about 3/4 of it – she was not happy with me taking it away. Corn cobs are not digestible and can cause blockages. I called the regular vet. They said we were the second case recently. They wanted me to take her to the Emergency vet for X-rays / scoping and removing it if needed. I don’t need more vet bills or another recovering critter to worry about. Luckily, I called the ER first and they advised giving a dose of Hydrogen Peroxide to see if she would vomit it up before coming in. It took a dose and 1/2 but everything came up including breakfast.

I’ve had an “interesting” day. I’m dyeing wool for my rug hooking workshops and it’s been extra warm here in SW Ohio. I run the a/c, but have a big floor fan blowing cool air into the steamy kitchen, plus a smaller fan on the counter to direct warm air off the stove. I actually love the dye process and so it’s fun, but lots of heavy lifting.
So the counter top fan died just minutes after I plugged it in, bumming me out, but I pulled another one from the basement. It worked just fine for a while. Unfortunately, I turned quickly with one of the dye pots and knocked it right off the counter. Ka-blooie!
Two fans in one day. That’s a record!

Since you asked – Spousal Unit and I drove around the area looking at flood waters today. Got kicked out of a bar and grill on the river: “Get out! We’re closed!” Yeah, water’s high everywhere – even on the road below our house, next to the river. We’re safe – but it pisses me off more than I can say how our congressman and governor were dancing around our town less than a month ago, saying, “Yay us! We just got you a government grant that will protect us all from floods forever!” Just found out today it wasn’t totally true – a third of the grant is a loan that has to be paid back soon.

I drove my friend to her last knee-rehab appointment. It was late in the afternoon, so afterwards we went to Red Robin, where I hadn’t been in a long time, for an early dinner. Thought I would get a big burger, but I ended up having some “boneless chicken wings” that were pretty good. Spicy but not radioactive. Now I’m home and relaxing after a hectic day. Housecat sideboard with her heating pad set to low.
My friend works in retail (Trader Joe’s), so I worry about her going back to work too soon, but she has been back on the job for several weeks, building up her hours, and she says the knee is almost 100%. (She had a torn meniscus repaired.) Anyway, glad she got that out of the way before I leave town next week. Busses and walking are not a good way to get to knee rehab!

@Faithful Lurker: Here you go –
INGREDIENTS
¾ to 1 cup sugar
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup unbleached flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt (optional)
2 eggs
24 halves pitted purple plums
Sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon, for topping
PREPARATION
Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream the sugar and butter in a bowl. Add the flour, baking powder, salt and eggs and beat well.
Spoon the batter into a springform pan of 8, 9 or 10 inches. Place the plum halves skin side up on top of the batter. Sprinkle lightly with sugar and lemon juice, depending on the sweetness of the fruit. Sprinkle with about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, depending on how much you like cinnamon.
Bake 1 hour, approximately. Remove and cool; refrigerate or freeze if desired. Or cool to lukewarm and serve plain or with whipped cream. (To serve a torte that was frozen, defrost and reheat it briefly at 300 degrees.)
Tip: To freeze, double-wrap the torte in foil, place in a plastic bag and seal.

I am prepping for my friends’ upcoming wedding this Saturday, so it’s more of a denial of deliciousness until the festivities. I need to look my best in my tux. And I’m furiously rehabbing my Achilles tendon so I can dance in very moderate heels for 8 hours. I don’t know how socialites deal with this stress.
The bad thing about diets is it makes me bake a lot. Not sure if I’d make a torte, but maybe a peach cake?

I have been making things with the plethora of zucchini we have from the one plant we bought in the spring. We are still eating the little ones as vegetables, but some hide in plain sight until they are huge, or quadruple their size overnight. Day before yesterday I made chocolate zucchini bread that was much more like a very moist chocolate cake that was a huge hit with the family. It is good, because it keeps me off Twitter and the various papers I read.
Since Aretha’s funeral, I have been playing all sorts of the musicians there. My conviction that Stevie’s Innervisions is one of the great all-time albums remains firm.

I was super excited that my Cold Rush ice machine arrived 1 day ahead of schedule — yay! We got it all hooked up and loaded up with ice water. The unit itself seems to be working fine, but I think they accidentally sent me the wrong pad. It was supposed to be shaped for the knee, but the pictures on the bag seem to show that it’s the shape of a shoulder pad. So that’s a little annoying.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: The original location has closed, to make way for real estate development (grrrrr). I remember when RR was a subversive little burger place, with insane menu items like “Waterbed Burger,” which was supposedly served while you, the customer, lolled on said waterbed; and which they needed 24 hours notice to make (I think it was actually a spoof item).
I have spent the day figuring out how to salvage the glass piece I’m working on for my Aunt. All was well until the final stacked firing, which came out with yet another massive bubble (the previous attempt at this piece also spawned bubbles and had to be discarded). I broke off the soap-bubble thin bubbly part, leaving a crater in the middle of what is supposed to be sky. My theory of what happened is that the 10×10 dimensions of the piece are too big for the 10×10 dam mold, and the glass fires/melts/anneals unevenly.
Anyway, first I thought about flipping the piece over and refiring it so any bubbles would come out the back – but that risks just making more bubbles until I know for sure what went wrong the first time. Then I had the brilliant idea of just slicing off the part of the piece where the bubble is – the image would still work fine, only the sky would be smaller. The slab being about 1/2″ thick, I’d need an industrial strength cutter. I spoke to three different commercial glass companies, none of whom could help: the likeliest technique, high pressure waterjet, had a better than 50% chance of shattering the whole piece. So much for that idea.
The bubble crater is a perfect circle, and it’s in the middle of the “sky.” So, my next thought was: how about gluing a big cabochon bead into the circular crater, and calling it a sun? OK! Hit the bead stores: nothing. Check Etsy: nothing. Have a brainstorm and go to a local rock&mineral shop. Result! Bought a lovely big cabochon agate all swirls of white, grey and pink. No, it doesn’t look like a sun: it could be an eclipsed moon, or even an alien planet. Point is, it looks good, fits the crater, and all will be well.
Whew.

@O. Felix Culpa: A way to link a trip is to get a map that shows locations of ship circles (stones laid out in a ship shape) and rune stones. Then you can stop off to see whatever little local ones are along the way of your travel. They are often just out in a field or near a crossroads not far off your route, so you experience different pieces of the land as you take a break. Sweden has or had a law that as long as you don’t disturb any crops, walkers may walk through almost any land. (I believe it’s one reason they resisted joining the EU–they didn’t want to lose that. ) If you are on a hill it’s nice to watch the sun go down from an old site. In June Stockholm is beautiful walking because of long beautiful evening light. The boat the Vasa (Museum) astounds me. You can look at it online to see if you’re interested.

I have been sort of discreetly grilling her, because I know one of the problems in hourly jobs is the pressure to get back on the job and get on the clock. (Not much “sick leave,” of course.) And when you go back too soon you risk reinjuring the knee (or whatever) or not letting it heal completely, which leads to more problems down the road.
I had to go back to work at B&N two weeks after my jaw was broken and while my mouth was wired shut for another two months. My jaw was like a tuning fork and picked up every vibration of every step I took. Did I do it because I loved the job? Fuck, no.

@debbie: That’s funny, I tore it out one or two or more times when they reprinted it. For years, not only do I keep meaning to try it, but I’m so certain that I will make it that it feels almost as familiar to me as if I had.
O. Felix Culpa
@Aleta: Oooh, that’s new and intriguing information. I found some cool pictures of the stone ships here. I’m looking forward to the beautiful evening light you describe.

Now that’s just showing off!

@Steeplejack: Having been in that boat myself for years when younger, I know what a gift to her energy and her knee healing that is.

@Cheryl Rofer: Thank you. I’ll try it sometime soon…I wonder how it would be with apples.
Gin & Tonic
@Aleta: Here’s a couple of those stone ships near Anundshög, in Sweden.
Miss Bianca
@rikyrah: thank you!

@Aleta:
Thanks.

@O. Felix Culpa: You encounter automatics a little more now. I’m fully comfortable either way, and always specify the cheapest option, but the car I rented in Bergen had an automatic transmission.
Plan on $8/gal for fuel, though. Expensive gas and cheap hydro means you see a *lot* of Teslas.
Gin & Tonic
@Gin & Tonic: But they like their classic Detroit iron too (this is in Bergen.)

@Gin & Tonic, @Steeplejack:
Now you’ve got me going deep into the archives.

Okay, I’ve got to get over to Daniel Dale’s Twitter feed to find out how crazy Trump is tonight. Could be epic!

@Steeplejack
Is it 9 p.m. local time (which would be another 2 hours from now) or 9 p.m. Eastern?

@Steeplejack: I do correct for the yellow tint from light pollution and reduce the exposure towards the horizon. At that wide an angle you won’t get much detail, it’s shot with a 12mm lens(18mm 35mm equivalent).
O. Felix Culpa
@NotMax: Per the intrepid Daniel Dale himself, it’s 9 pm Eastern.

So 7 p.m. in Billings.
About 15 minutes before they roll up the sidewalks. //

@O. Felix Culpa: Norwegian Air and Wow (budget airline out of Iceland) have wonderful deals. I usually do the Economy plus option; I like a seat reservation and (sometimes) a little more leg room. I know Norwegian flies out of LAX and SFO, I think ….
You will have a splendid time. Keep us posted!

@debit: They basically just took the minigame and expanded it a little more but didn’t really put any effort into making it a standalone game.

It’s 7:00 MDT, 9:00 EDT. That’s what was announced.

Peach Kuchen
By Grace H. (my Grandma)
1/2 cup butter
2 cups sifted flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
12 peach haflves ( or however many it takes to fill your pan )
1 tsp cinnamon ( I add some Chinese Five Spice too )
2 egg yolks ( I use 3 )
1cup sour cream
Preheat oven to 425.
Work butter into sifted flour, baking powder sale and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Mix sugar with cinnamon (and 5-spice if using).
Pat even layer over bottom of 8 or 9 inch square pan, and up sides. Arrange peach halves in shell, sprinkle fruit with sugar and cinnamon mix. Bake in 425 oven for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, beat egg yolks into sour cream. Take dish from oven and pour sour cream mix over fruit. Reduce oven to 350, bake 30 minutes longer.
Enjoy.
This recipe is from my gramdma’s in laws up in Pennsyltucky, where her husband, my Penssy-Dutch grandfather came from. He was one of 15 siblings, she was one of 9 siblings, both were farm families. He learned black smithy work, and was got a job as a mechanic in the WV coal field mines, and grandma went to business school, learned typing and bookkeeping, and got hired to do accounting in the company offices.
After they met and decided to marry, her sisters-in-law all sent her recipes from his family, so she could cook things he had grown up with. This is one of those family recipes, that my Grandma typed up for my wife and I when we wed.

Yup. My mom used to live in Billings. Not the most happening place.

@Elizabelle: Thanks for the airline tips. I’ve heard mixed reviews about Norwegian Airlines, so it’s good to know you’ve had positive experiences with them.

Okay, Daniel Dale has started on the Trump rally.
For those who don’t go on Twitter much—and you don’t have to have a Twitter account, you can just go to the link and read—Dale’s comments will collect at the top, with readers’ comments below that. When you need to refresh the page (to get new comments), click on Dale’s most recent comment, which will embiggen the text, and that will hold your position after the page refresh. Otherwise you’ll end up back at the top of the thread.

@Faithful Lurker: I’ve made this one more times than I can count. So good. https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/plum-hazelnut-torte-100776
Also, this one is even simper. Pro tip: grate a whisper of bittersweet chocolate or sprinkle some cocoa powder over the top just before baking.

@Shakti: That sounds DELICIOUS. How close are you to Akron?

@Miss Bianca: We got a box of Palisade Peaches, and I made peach ginger jam last weekend. Usually, I make two batches of jam, then we make a cobbler and a crumble. We haven’t had the time. I hope the rest of the peaches do not go bad. I really want that cobbler and crumble to happen.

@Manyakitty:
Those look good. Also bookmarked.

@Steeplejack:
Looks like you don’t have to manually refresh the page. When you click on a tweet and embiggen it, the thread appends any of Dale’s subsequent tweets. Cool!

Trump was riffing on “crazy Bernie” for a few minutes. One commenter:
Also, there is a commenter called Elon Mosque.

First “Sir Alert.”
Dale keeps track of how often Trump spices up an anecdote with someone—potentates, diplomats, coal miners, minor functionaries—calling him “sir” at a crucial juncture.
The last one I remember was Trump talking with a group of coal miners who were so glad to be going back to work that they were crying—all but one. Trump looked at him, and the guy said, “Sir, I don’t cry.”
Like that. All these stories come from Trump and are unsubstantiated, of course.

My new culinary discovery is pork shoulder steaks. Local farms and farmers markets near me sell them and they’re one of the more inexpensive cuts. I just season and grill them on the Weber and, riffing on David Chang’s recipe, serve them with a ranch-style dressing, mac and cheese, and an heirloom tomato salad. Amazeballs.

@O. Felix Culpa:
Have been to Norway and loved it. June should be a great time of year. I was there in November. 46 yrs ago.
A guy I worked with moved to Finland, where his parents were from with his 7 yr old boy – he had sole custody. This was in the late 60s though. He only stayed 2 yrs, he had a really difficult time with the language. But he loved the place. I’d bet it would be different today.
But as far as travel advice, other than to say GO!, I’m out.

Sounds weird, maybe, that I like to slather some jalapeño jelly on ’em after they’re cooked. Plus applesauce on the side.
