On a more sombre topic, just saw this Washington Post article: “Grain-free, exotic dog food linked to heart disease“. I have *not* had the time to research it, but I figured it was something those of us with dog companions should be aware of. Apparently some dogs — including mixed breeds — inherit a potential cardiac problem that can be exacerbated by grain-free, high-legume foods that don’t contain enough taurine.
Yes, cat owners will remember that we were all warned, starting back in the 1970s, that all-tuna, low-taurine diets could be fatal to felines. (Pet food companies routinely add taurine to fish-based cat foods now.) Cats, of course, are obligate carnivores*; dogs are scavengers, mostly on human diets — their dietary needs don’t always align. Most of the major big-box-pet-store dogfood manufacturers use some kind of grain in their products, for the carbs that dogs need, but it can’t hurt to check the label if you’re feeding a boutique product and/or talk to your vet to see what they think.
*who sometimes enjoy a little pasta with tomato sauce, especially if there are anchovies, thankyouverymuch

What an eclectic post. Good morning, AL.

Odd you would post the dog food info. My pups have been on fish and sweet potato “Natural Balance” for years. I asked Lil Bit’s heart doc about it and she said it was fine. However, Lil Bit puked the night before last, yesterday morning and again just now. She had the “tie-back” surgery a couple of months back and we are watching closely for aspiration pneumonia but this doesn’t seem to have many of those symptoms. She’s a bit punky but she’s eating ok so I guess I’ll take her in again.

The woo around pet food is second only to the woo around essential oils.
All my animals, all rescues and many from very bad early starts, have lived normal to extended lifespans on normal kibble from the big pet food companies (mostly Purina chow or Pedigree).
And essential oils don’t cure anything, nor do they really repel mosquitoes.
It’s like they quit teaching science for the last 40 years.

Grain is not a source of taurine. The problem with these grain free foods is not the lack of grain, it is that many of them are intended to be supplemental rather than complete foods and that is not clear to consumers. If they don’t have enough taurine it is because they don’t have enough animal products in them, especially muscle and organ meat, not because they don’t have grain. A good discussion from Tufts Vet nutrition site is here http://vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2018/06/a-broken-heart-risk-of-heart-disease-in-boutique-or-grain-free-diets-and-exotic-ingredients/

Since you bring that up: Is senior-cat food a worthwhile thing, or am I just wasting money without doing Bianca any real good?

By the way, when I tried to de-sensitize my pet, I used small amounts of rice (since the original owners (she’s a rescue) already warned me about corn and wheat.) So, apparently, she can’t handle any common grain. That, apparently, is a rather rare condition for dogs.
OzarkHillbilly
@satby: Sure… Blame it on the computer.

I think it does them some good. I get the senior version of chow for the older cats. Plus since WereBear said canned is good for improving the cat’s water intake, I do feed more canned food, which used to be reserved for hiding medicine in only.

So I said goodbye to my cat yesterday. The reason he wasn’t eating food solids was a tumor that had banded around his trachea and esophagus. I guess the choice came down to ending his life or waiting a month or two until he could no longer breathe or drink. It was the right choice, I know, and I thought I was prepared, but it still sucks to be heartbroken. I keep having to remind myself that there wasn’t anything I could have done to “catch it in time”. That by the time I noticed that he wasn’t eating as much, it was already too late. It’s not like “take a bunch of x-rays and c-scans to locate all potential tumors” is a standard part of an annual check up.
He was my first house cat. I had lots of cats and dogs growing up, but my mom ordered them strictly outdoors. So he was the first pet who lived with me. I think that makes it harder to be away from him. He was a fat, lazy, messy, ‘skittish little beast who fought with me whenever I tried to trim his nails and wrecked my furniture and knocked so many things off shelves that I put anything nice and fragile into boxes in closets years ago. He never went willingly into his carrier, and my right hand still has scars from our battles over confinement. I should be happy to be rid of him.
But I’m not. I’m going to remember him watching nature shows. And how bad he was at hiding. And that time I dropped him off with a friend when I had a trip, when he went crazy looking for a safe place in the new environment and found it in a lampshade. And that time when we were playing with the fish pole toy and he actually caught the fish, panicked, and ran around the house with the pole trailing behind. He never forgot that trauma…I could never bring out that toy or any toy on a stick again without him leaving the room.
Anyway, it’s going to be a long day today, with no one to feed. But I have to get to work. I also found out yeasterday that my promotion came through and I’ll be moving to a new job on Tuesday. I’ve got too much work to finish to dwell on that cat.

Scott Walker is running on his (fake) support for public education. That’s an admission this stuff isn’t popular. Scott Walker is having trouble getting re-elected on Scott Walker’s agenda.

When we adopted our shelter dog (some kind of Am Staff mix), I dutifully researched online what to feed her (it had been 20 years since I’d owned a dog) and wow, people convinced me that grain was the devil. So I bought some $70 a bag fancy dog food (grain free) and it made her poop out pudding five times a day and the gas that came out of her would peel paint. The vet told us to look for something with grain as the first ingredient. So now she’s on Beneful and five years later continues to do well on it. With a lot less gas. Lesson learned.

It hasn’t mattered to them yet- these were GOP primaries or specials so they’re just picking new Republicans.
The strikes were interesting though because none of them saw them coming. That to me indicates a certain disconnect with their constituents. How can you say you “represent” these people and NOT KNOW they’re planning to shut down every school in the state? Oklahoma doesn’t even have teachers unions to speak of- they aren’t allowed to strike. They did anyway.
The governor of Oklahoma has a 19% approval rating and she didn’t notice public discontent with her policies? It’s arrogance. They’re complacent.

I had a nice time last night reading the Twitter backlash to the Texas GOP’s attempted attack on Beto O’Rourke. The attacks? He wants the debates against Booger-Eater Cruz to not be on high school football night, he plays bass and was on a punk band, he skateboards, and he has a mug shot which was universally described by commenters as “smoking” and “sexy”.
Lots of people said they or their parents are lifelong diehard Texas Republicans who will never again vote Republican. Lots of reports of Beto enthusiasm in deep red territory.

@MomSense: Funny how all those conservatives love college football, even though it’s associated with elitist liberal universities. They’ll even defend their favorite school’s (or the school loosely affiliated with the program they cheer for) academic reputation against its rivals or any other school. Conservative Michigan fans seem to take that to 11, but to some extent they all do. Well, maybe ‘bama fans don’t care about academics so long as they can lord those national championships over everyone else.
Kay
@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
They aren’t making the connection between “Republicans” and these policies. They’re still at the individual “replace this Republican with that other Republican” stage.
I will say though, I think Democrats and liberals underestimate how difficult it is to leave a Party affiliation. Most people don’t do it. It is very difficult to go from a lifelong (perhaps generational) R lean to a D Lean. We make such a big deal about party switchers because they’re relatively rare. Not understanding it leads to mistakes in two areas- Democrats think they can appeal to Republicans AND Democrats don’t know why moderate Republicans won’t leave the Party.
I don’t think there WOULD be a Democratic Trump but if there were a horrible Democrat and that person became the nominee I might vote for them just for the judges. Maybe you guys are more principled but I would want the judges :)

What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Kay: Cokie is on NPR this morning reliving the 1968 Democratic convention and said to close out the segment that “the ideological divide from that era has reemerged” or something like that. That convention forever defined the Democrats as in disarray. There’s no strong ideological divide in the Democratic party. Even the most conservative democrats these days want universal health care and sand financial regulations and all the other things Bernie insinuates that they’re against. The fight is all about what parts of the platform to emphasize in messaging, not about deep disagreement on policy goals or ideology. Those are all on the Republican side if anyone would care to notice – the question is whether to go full on Nazi or stick with the plutocrat friendly model of a democratic republic (call it the George Will wing) – low taxes, light regulations, but free and fair elections and at least some level of civil rights regardless of race.

The Immp and I visited there this May, their facilities for research are amazing — they have a small town built on the north side of campus to test autonomous vehicles; they have an enclosed acre to test drove prototypes, we toured a 21,000 sq ft facility — the Wilson Center — which is maker spece for their clubs!
We did, however, notice that every other student was wearing Michigan swag which was very odd. They say Ohio State is worse….

What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Immanentize: Yes but if you have a degree from Michigan State, you get tired of “Michigan men” (most of whom didn’t even go there and may not even have gone to college) looking down their noses at you. I mean I’m not going to claim that MSU is a better academic institution or even as good but it’s pretty good – probably half the States in the nation don’t have an equivalent caliber university. And not everyone goes to MSU because Michigan rejected them, though that is implied all the time. I, for instance, got into Michigan for both undergrad and grad school. I decided I wanted a smaller school for undergrad, and then MSU was a hell of a lot more welcoming when I applied for grad school, and they were strong in my chosen field. Even though Michigan did accept me they didn’t seem to care, at all, whether I came. They couldn’t even tell me who my academic adviser would be much less allow me to meet with him or her prior to making a decision.
And lately, in the rankings I see, it’s not the best major public university in the nation like they seem to think it is. UNC is ranked ahead of them to pick one school at random. Not sure how that works though…they ran a fake degree program for more than a decade and still get to claim top 10 academic status? Makes you think something is wrong with the ranking systems.

What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@satby: I think it’s more that the players are being exploited (with the excuse of the noble amateur ideal) rather than that there are more white kids and not as much protesting. They (conservative college sports fans) all defend not paying players.. What’s a scholarship worth, like $40K a year? And that’s well above the actual marginal cost to the university of giving those players a free ride. What do they generate in revenue at the big time universities? Assuming that they are responsible for about 50% of the revenue generated collectively? I’m guessing that figure comes to more than $200K per college football or basketball player per year. The excess goes to non-revenue generating athletes and coaching salaries and the AD. Conservative men love it when someone is getting jobbed and those players are getting jobbed. Who are the non revenue sports athletes primarily? They’re the mostly white, upper middle class soccer, lacrosse, swim, and volley ball players, etc. So, again, the primarily African American revenue generators are getting screwed to subsidize the wealthier whiter student athletes. That’s right in their wheelhouse.
