2020 Iowa Caucus-Avenatti comes out wearing a short, yellow, skin-tight onesie with a leather jacket. Bernie is wearing a tank top and Zubaz pants.

… but this was Monday:
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Trump voters are allegedly motivated by their resentment against the disdain and contempt they get from coastal elites, but coastal elites didn’t actually have so low an opinion of them as to expect things like this. pic.twitter.com/AAtCh03IzQ

Another shocker, Qanon is run by grifters.

Interesting times suck.

Regarding the title, it really might at that. I just scanned down from the photo in the first tweet to read all about the 2020 Iowa Cactus.

OT, so, OT Q/bleg: anybody here got any strong opinions on where to go for quilts (online, of course)? I’ve never owned a quilt in my life, so …. any advice appreciated.
Mary G
@Chetan Murthy: That’s a really broad category. Price range? Handmade or machine sewn? Traditional design or other?
Chetan Murthy
@Mary G:
Price range: I don’t really know, but I’m a frugal bastard, if that helps
Machine-sewn (unless somehow hand-made is gonna be much, much more durable/comfortable)
Design? Oh heck, I have no idea. I just want warm, comfortable, durable, not ugly.
I guess a pretty design would be nice. But I’m sadly a standard-issue guy when it comes to domestic things. As in: “no clue”.
Duane
I like Avenatti. He’s young(ish) a fighter and new to the scene. He’s stood up for Daniels when people wanted to trash her. Seems like he’s got courage. That’s a good start. Policy wise, we shall see, but he has a lot of qualities that we need.

@Mary G: It’s grifters all the way down!

On a budget, I’ve had quilts from Target that I like. If you live in a cold climate, might not be warm enough? For warmer, search their site for a duvet and cover.
LL Bean has some at higher prices.
Morfydd
As the daughter of a quilter/collector: get a comforter/duvet. Lighter for the warmth, can change out covers, all parts washable as needed.
If you must have a quilt, you can get a Chinese-made one for $50 at a place like Bed Bath & Beyond, or a beat-all-to-hell handmade one for a similar price at the antique store of your choosing. Both will be washable and relatively attractive.
As an art form it can be gorgeous and astronomically expensive, but it doesn’t sound like it’s interesting to you, so go for the duvet. :)
Mary G
@Chetan Murthy: Overstock.com has 42 pages of quilts, including some more traditional ones.
If you want warm, I second @Morfydd: get a duvet and cover. Down is expensive, but microfiber is dirt cheap and just as warm. Here is one at Amazon. Putting the cover on can be a bit of a wrestling match, but it can be done.

@OzarkHillbilly: The Presidency is place where we should have as little on-the-job training as possible.

@Duane: I like Avenatti too and would have been a big supporter if he announced a run for Congress. Running for president with no political experience whatsoever beyond a few months of appearing on any news show that would book him is a massive red warning sign to examine everything else about him. Hell no.
opiejeanne
@OzarkHillbilly: Thank you, amen.
I like Avenatti a lot, but he should keep doing what he’s doing right now, representing Stormy and the other woman, helping get immigrant kids back to their parents. He’s been driving Trump nuts which is a bonus.
Someone suggested that his exploration of a run for president might just be a way of annoying Trump. And he hasn’t mentioned which party he’d run for which worries me a little. I don’t want him running independent, but him running in the Republican primary might be entertaining. .

@opiejeanne:
I believe he identifies as a Democrat. He spoke at some Democratic pre-2020 dog and pony show recently. Apparently, his speech wowed the crowd. Forget where it was.

@opiejeanne: I like him too, but I haven’t seen or heard him representing Stormy in quite some time. That’s supposed to be his day job.

@Chetan Murthy: Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, other retailers will have (relatively) cheap quilts.Cracker Barrel has nice ones as well. If you buy a Chinese made quilt wash it the first time in hot water and Lysol or something to kill critters in the batting. After the initial wash, you only wash it in cold water. Dry it on permanent press. Heat is the enemy of any quilt or afghan. There are those charming photos of people hanging quilts on the line to dry. Don’t The weight of the water and batting will break the quilting fibers and it will come apart. This is true for afghans as well. Dry it in a dryer on low or permanent press. Hot water, hot drying heat will make the fabric and quilting threads brittle.

@Chetan Murthy: If you happen to be “in town” for some reason, why not get a cheap breakfast at IKEA? They’ve got lots of cheap furniture and plenty of duvet covers and probably some duvets. Plus if it doesn’t fit in the car they’ll deliver to a couple of hours away.

@Chetan Murthy:
Macy’s has machine made quilts with attractive and bright screened patterns on one side. Very warm, sturdy, brightly colored print on a white ground, dog proof. Not expensive. We sleep under one most of the time.
Traditional quilts are made from small to tiny pieces of fabric, all different from previous sewing projects, made into patterns such as Wedding Ring or Cathedral Window.
My Great Aunt Helen made all of her grand nephews and nieces wedding ring quilts as wedding presents, by hand. They are heirlooms not for sale, but craftspeople do make them for sale. Antique quilts are also bought and sold. Cathedral Window is perhaps the most complicated traditional quilt pattern commonly seen, and is often a prize winner when done well with an interesting selection of cloth. Modern quilts are often made with a small variety of cloth types used in the making of the patterns, while traditional quilts use a huge and random variety of cloth colors and patterns, what was in the scrap bag.
There are contests, with prizes awarded in various artistic and traditional categories. A highly respected craft art in the mountains for generations now. Lifesaving craft in harsh winters. We have slept under a pile of quilts and sleeping bags during a utility failure when first living in the old farmhouse on our hillside farm, with cats and dogs on top, they were cold too. Pipes froze, went away for the rest of Christmas, bought our first wood stove on the 26th. Heated with wood the rest of that winter, slept by the stove. Cold winter!! 1978 IIRC.
