I actually think Trump arranging for RNC sinecures for his toadies is a good thing. Consider: Every $100k of RNC donor money that’s spent on a toady in a no-show featherbedding job is a couple fewer field workers or a few TV ads that don’t get aired.

It has really reminded me how there are cinematic “proprieties” as well as theatrical (acting) ones that must be observed. Film makes it more “real,” whereas (the technically more “real”) videotape breaks it down completely into obvious (and often bad) actors obviously reciting (often bad) lines.
And it’s not that the actors are bad, really. It’s just that videotape strips away some protective layer that film gives them. Probably why acting for soap operas is so different.

You’ll be interested to know I voted on a new 3 year labor contract today. I said yes, even though it kind of sucks. For part-time Grocery employees (which is what I’m classified as), my employer only has to contribute $117.00 a month to the Union’s Health and Welfare fund for me. I have to work at least 72 hrs a month to be eligible and complete at least one year of service before I can get that. Problem is you can’t restrict your availability in any way or you won’t get the contribution. I go to university part-time so that’s out.
In order to be considered ACA full-time a part-timer has to consistently work 30 hrs or more for a year to be eligible for a healthcare plan with the employer.
The wage increases aren’t bad. In a year I’ll be making $9.20 /hr. I make $8.65 now and will make $8.80 in less than a month. I’ll likely never reach top rate (10.40/he after 6/7/2020) considering I won’t be working at this place long enough.

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??:
I had a friend who worked in the norcal office of the grocery store union. She told me that when the great depression hit all the stores cut everyone back to part time. That way they didn’t have to pay for healthcare. So everyone had to find another job. The markets were happy to hire people to work 2 part time jobs, even for the same company but not the same store, as they were listed as store employees and not chain employees. And of course the schedules often conflicted because well they could, which meant that often someone couldn’t work an odd shift on short notice and was fired. So the stores got pissed off employees, the customers often didn’t get the service they needed but the store sold the same amount of food. Win, win, win?
??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??
@Ruckus:
That sounds mostly similar to what I’ve heard from my co-workers who’ve been here a while. The difference is that I’ve turned down an extra shift before and nobody’s threatened to fire me.
It sucks working in Grocery now that the truck arrives so late at night now. I have to work until midnight and the guy I mentioned who was full time has to work 8.5 hour shifts, so he works until 3 am. The store has tried this twice in the past in order to save money. How I don’t know. This and other reasons have made me realize how much I like working on the front end as a cashier instead. The extra hrs are nice though.

@Steve in the ATL: Very sound advice re high-margin vs. low-margin. This translates very well into manufacturing, where I’ve spent my three decades of toil: while the mechanics of “making stuff” are the same regardless of industry segment (“Computer chips, potato chips, it’s all the same”), when you’re making computer chips the company also throws in a weight room, a subsidized cafeteria, and an R&D budget that ensures you’ll be around for the next generation.
