Or, as it was once known: Bedlam! And what rough beast, its hour come round at last…
Donald Trump’s day so far:
– Judge overrules him on immigrant child kidnapping
– Judge orders DACA reinstatement
– Paul Manafort losing badly
– Prostitution ring leader testifies against Roger Stone
– Trump sulking at golf club
– More bombshells coming
– Is still only 5:30pm— Palmer Report (@PalmerReport) August 3, 2018
Historians will look back on this era and marvel at how in the middle of an investigation of a Russian cover up the President showed absurd deference to their leader and that wasn't game over.

Future conversation:
“So everyone was distracted by dumb pop culture noise?”
“Not really, people were obsessed with him.”
“And he still got away with all that stuff?”
“It puzzles academics still.”— Schooley (@Rschooley) August 2, 2018

One closing thought before bedtime: Trump's war against the press is not just a play to the base. It is an existential struggle against what has always been his nemesis: the truth. He knows it can destroy him.

Whew!
I would love to see his reaction to that quote. Cuts pretty close to the bone.

Open thread, all righty then…here’s a Milky Way pic I took last night up in the Lockwood Valley, since no one seemed to like my pretty star trails.?

Because the Republicans have a strangle hold on the government atm. But nothing lasts forever and this will pass. It’s up to us all to ensure that what will come after Trump and the authoritarian GOP will be better.

Tax returns or GTFO (for candidates).
Alfonse Capone cheated on his taxes. Manafort cheated on his taxes. Trump?

The truth may set YOU free – but it’ll lock Trumpski up in Club Fed for many years. Maybe we can rename it the Trump Family Compound so he’ll go voluntarily…

Thanks for including that 50 yard pokemon dash in your post. I bet you old farts don’t even know what pokemon that brown one is.

In less than two years, the traitorous thug has started & sustained nasty fights with neighbors, press, immigrants, kids, nato, chinese, judges, fbi, cia, nsa, military etc. etc. The only one whose ass he constantly kisses is that of putin. That alone is proof enough of the thug’s treason.

@rikyrah: Love both of those, especially the trees in the first one and the colors in the second.

That’s the entire ball game right there.

@germy: One of the Dem members. I remember there was a lot of debate about whether any Dem should participate in that travesty.
Mnemosyne
Here’s a possible non-political topic of discussion: movies that should be depressing, but aren’t. We saw Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz again last weekend, which is a movie that by all rights should be depressing as hell, and yet it’s not.
Alternative line of discussion: movies that pretend to have happy endings but just leave you feeling cheated.
p.a.
@germy: I don’t understand. Was he a lone Dem on the commission? If not, and he was stupid enough initially to really believe the fraud claims (not just using them for vote suppression) I find it hard to believe he is actually intelligent enough to accept the obvious fact that vote fraud claims are a fraud. He must have an angle…
ETA: ok, he was the Dem
frosty
@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?: LOL nope, But my kid who’s about your age certainly does. He leads a Pokemon Go group around here.

@Mnemosyne:
La La Land. You two idiots threw away the love of your life so you could get ahead in show biz. Ugh. It was a love letter of Hollywood to itself and the ending sucked.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
kinda on-topic: friends told me Muriel’s Wedding was hilarious. I thought it was one of the most depressing movies I’d ever seen

@Mary G: I shot there for the first time last month, a number of things went wrong with my shoot last night(I didn’t get there early enough, I couldn’t sight Polaris…), but I got a couple of good shots. I’ve got a couple of interesting places to shoot in the next few weeks while the moon is not in the sky and if the weather cooperates.
WaterGirl
@germy: @Baud: MomSense gets to say I told you so on this one – many of us were concerned that he was adding legitimacy to the effort, but MomSense had faith in him.

@frosty:
I avoided La-La Land. It just gave me a bad vibe, and I like Hollywood musicals about Hollywood (see also Singin’ In the Rain or the Garland/Mason A Star Is Born). There was just something about it that was off-putting. I was so happy when Moonlight eked out a Best Picture victory over it.
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
That was me and In Bruges. People told me it was hilarious but forgot to tell me how many people get bloodily murdered in the course of it.
Baud
@WaterGirl: She has a lot of momsense.
Mnemosyne
@PPCLI:
For Option A or Option B?
WaterGirl
@Baud: She most certainly does. We are lucky to have her.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Mnemosyne: I knew it was dark going in, so I enjoyed In Bruges.
Do you ever listen to John Fuglesang’s radio show on Sirius? I’ve gotten out of the habit (in part because JF can be such a sanctimonious BernieBro), but they talk movies a lot, and his co-host, Frank Conniff is hilarious, in general and specifically when ragging on La La Land.
WaterGirl
I missed the whole DACA ruling today. I am surprised that no one front-paged it. One good thing this week, and hugely important.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: I would bet that you have never been to Bruges. Having been there, the idea of ultra-violence there is wacky; I couldn’t help but laugh.
Origuy
@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?: Eevee. I didn’t know much about Pokemon until Go came out.

@Omnes Omnibus:
I liked him as the bartender in “The Bank Dick.”

I wonder if “Sorry To Bother You” will win any awards. The script is beyond amazing.

I don’t have Sirius, so no. I do like Frank Conniff, though. He’s a good sidekick.

From Amy Siskind’s The List:
Week 11 (January 22 — 28)
32. Trump called for an investigation into voter fraud, then delayed signing the executive order. Media uncovered that several Trump insiders are registered to vote in two states.
Week 12 (January 29 — February 4)
14. The AP reported that the voter fraud expert chosen by Trump to conduct his voter fraud investigation is registered to vote in three states.
(Sorry, no links; I’ve started reading the book.)
Emma
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Wow!
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Also, too, the person who recommended it didn’t bother to tell me about the ultra-violence, so that didn’t help.
I was fine with Kingsman because I knew it was ultra-violent ahead of time, but In Bruges surprised me with it, and not in a good way.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: It shows Harry being true to his principles. It wasn’t a comedy although a shitload of it was funny. It was a mob movie.
Felony Govt
@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?: This old fart didn’t even know those were Pokémon’s.
Felony Govt
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Wow that is spectacular. I love Mt. Pinos.
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Right, but the person who recommended it said it was a comedy, and the reviews I saw called it one. So having children get graphically murdered was not what I was expecting.
And on a story level, I did not find it either funny or ironic that yet another innocent bystander had to die horribly as a throwaway joke to complete Harry’s subplot. It really, really bothers me when movies casually kill innocent people as a joke. That wrecked The Nice Guys for me, too.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: I didn’t particularly care for Kingsman for similar reasons. Truce?
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne:
They weren’t killed as a joke. They were book-ends for the plot. But I entered it knowing it was dark and enjoyed the humor along the way. I can see how not knowing that could make the movie jarring as hell.
ETA: Also Ralph Fiennes does a great villian. See also The Good Thief.
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
I’m mostly still mad at the person who recommended it, who I’m pretty sure was not you. And, like I said, it didn’t help that it hit one of my biggest pet peeves in movies with that ending. Feh.
SectionH
@Mnemosyne: I’m extremely movie-ignorant, but I saw All That Jazz ages ago and loved it. Trying to think of a contribution to the your actual question,either way…
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Oh, the cast is great, which only increases my annoyance with the flaws of the writer/director. Fiennes is always at his best playing a villain, and Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson have great chemistry.
When I saw that Three Billboards was by the same writer/director, I noped out. I knew it was just going to annoy me.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: I can’t believe you suckered me into spending half of my birthday evening arguing about In Bruges with you. Dinner and drinks were earlier, so no harm done.
boatboy_srq
@germy: Of we throw a bucket of truth over him, would he melt? Asking for a
witchfriend.Scuffletuffle
@Mnemosyne: That’s a shame, because Three Billboards is a terrific movie.
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Happy birthday! ? The drinks probably contributed to the arguing.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: Nah, I can argue at the drop of a hat.

@debbie: I guess we should have expected that their vote fraud expert was at least vote fraud experienced.
