On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.
So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.
You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.
For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Today, pictures from valued commenter otmar.
Here are some pictures from a Saturday trip to the countryside some 40 km north of Vienna.

We visited the zoo / animal range at Ernstbrunn. The park belongs to the historic Ernstbrunn castle estate. (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernstbrunn)
The main feature of the zoo is the wolf science center, but they also have deer and Scottish highland cows.

The Leiser mountains (well, let’s be honest, hills) are the Austria’s most north-eastern high points. They give good view across and the countryside and that location made them the choice to house two radar domes: one for civilian air traffic control (Buschberg), and one for their military cousins (Steinmandl).
This area is one of Austria’s prime agricultural area. Here is the view from the Buschberg.
Such “Marterl” are common in the Austrian countryside. This one seems to be dedicated to Mary.

There is a viewing tower on top of the Oberleiser hill (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberleiser_Berg). This is the view towards the Church of Oberleis.
The mountain itself has an ancient history: they found remnants of early settlements (stone age, bronze age, and mainly from the age of migration of the peoples).

We’ve looked down toward this church in the previous picture: here is how it looks like from the inside.
This is actually quite the typical Austrian rural church. A bit of googling finds that it was built in 1050.
Thank you so much otmar, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Please, please, change One again to Once again. Makes the physiognomy wince every day of the week.
Also, as a heads-up, this post didn’t show up on the front page for a full 25 minutes after it showed up in the elephant ear tabs on the comments page. Site is still far from tip-top health.

I love Austria! What a nice start to the day — thank you!

Great pics. I sent some pics in a week or so ago from Croatia, but guessing they haven’t made the cut. The form/site was really wonky when I was trying to submit them.

And now I must add Austria to my travel bucket list. Beautiful pics!

1050. That’s not a typo? That church was built more than a thousand years ago. Wow.

We visited a church in Basque country of Spain that was built about then, it was quite different, more primitive building techniques, there were plenty of ancient stones carved as pagan gods/devils etc that were there to be despised. But very interesting to compare them!
The Basque town was preserved much as it had been 1000 years ago in external appearance, although power, water, sewage was present for everyone, and bread was delivered fresh to all each morning, so pretty civilized today!

@opiejeanne: no typo. See http://www.ernstbrunn.gv.at/Wallfahrtskirche_Oberleis
