"Wendi Winters saved my life": Capital Gazette staff say their fallen colleague charged the shooter. https://t.co/7yK6ljHb1c pic.twitter.com/chBXW52qfh
— Capital Gazette (@capgaznews) July 7, 2018
When a man with a shotgun shattered the glass door of the Capital Gazette newspaper office and began to shoot, Wendi Winters stood up…
Janel Cooley, a survivor of the shooting that killed Winters and four others, spoke about her experience for the first time in an interview with The Capital. She said she watched from under her desk as the 20-year newspaper veteran rose to meet her attacker.
Winters charged forward holding a trash can and recycling bin, said Cooley, a sales consultant. Winters shouted something like, “No! You stop that!” or “You get out of here!” like she was warding off an unwanted dog.
“She may have distracted him enough that he forgot about me because I definitely stood up and was looking at the door,” Cooley said. “I’m sure he wasn’t expecting … anyone to charge him.”
Winters’ colleagues agree she saved their lives. Of the 11 employees in the office during the attack, six survived…
Winters once gave fellow reporter Rachael Pacella the shirt off her back when Pacella spilled gasoline on her clothes before an important interview. She checked in on photojournalist Paul W. Gillespie incessantly after his brother died. Intern Anthony Messenger, who started at The Capital weeks before the attack, said Winters always tried to make him feel comfortable.
From the details her family has of the attack, Winters’ son Phoenix Geimer said, “It sounds like her.”…
Davis has a snapshot in his mind of everyone where they were when the gunman blasted in, he said. Winters was originally at her desk. Messenger said he remembers seeing Winters there with a puzzled look on her face as the attack began.
As Pacella and Davis hid, they heard the same shots Cooley did. Then there was a pause. They thought it was over.
The pause, Davis said, could have been Winters intervening. It gave Pacella time to get up from under her desk, run for the back door and then hide between filing cabinets.
“I think that Wendi doing what she did served as enough of a distraction that maybe he didn’t see us,” Pacella said. “I absolutely think that Wendi Winters saved my life.”

Good Morning, Everyone ???
rikyrah
@Quinerly:
Morning to Poco and the tribe ? ?
rikyrah
@Quinerly:
Of course, they did this. Anything to prevent ‘anchor babies’ from being born.
Quinerly
@rikyrah: Tail wags, meows and waves back at you.? I’ve been awake since 1:45. Not liking this day so far.
Baud
@rikyrah: Good morning.
?BillinGlendaleCA
How did I spend my evening, I took pictures and did post on my pics from my outing with Madame and the kid. I think this one turned out well.
Baud
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Nice. Is that a planet on the lower left hand side?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: Mars Attacks!
ETA: Actually, funny story about that, when I first saw it in the sky just above the mountain, I thought it was an airplane that was going to fuck up my series of shots and loudly cursed it. I hope the Martians didn’t hear me.
ETA: The sky portion of the shot is 8 shots merged to reduce noise(the meteor and Mars were from the last shot as is the car on the highway), the foreground(except for the car) was shot when we first arrived(just after sunset) and was darkened to match the sky.
Baud
@?BillinGlendaleCA: I wish we could see the night sky so clearly with the naked eye.
tobie
@Quinerly: Thanks for linking to this. Pretty horrifying. This is why we fight. We’re now the party of family values. I think we should reclaim this mantle.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: Even with the naked eye(and what about Baud isn’t naked), it looks really spectacular, like a luminescent cloud.
ETA: I was really concerned when we got up to Red Rock that it would be too cloudy to get any decent shots. But the clouds cleared and we got plenty. The kid was so excited when she first saw the Milky Way on her camera screen.
NotMax
Sigh. Just awakened from a deep, sound state of unconsciousness by a frantic pounding on the door.
Landlady prattling about not having hot water. Sleepy-voiced, convinced her (a) the world was not ending and (b) her house was not going to blow up and (c) I’d look at it in the morning. What the bloody hell did she think I (or anyone) was going to do about it at bloody midnight?
Have a very full day already laid out for Tuesday and now won’t be able to get back to bed for hours and hours.
Meanwhile, earlier in the evening discovered the 1980 British mini-series Flickers on Amazon Prime. More than enough cute moments to keep one engaged. Bob Hoskins and Frances de la Tour, who the young’uns might recognize (albeit younger, obviously, and more svelte) from her role as Violet on Vicious.
OzarkHillbilly
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Was outside this early AM picking hornworms off my mater plants. Looked up just in time to see the most glorious meteor streak across the sky leaving a broad and long sparkling tail in it’s wake. Haven’t seen one that glorious since I witnessed a Perseid shower at Carlsbad Caverns NP.
JPL
@Quinerly: Last week I had a few nights like that, and it is not fun. There is some good news there are only two more boys in the cave.
OzarkHillbilly
11.

I don’t know if anyone else had noticed this, but Dave Weigel is doing a good job covering Democratic primaries and candidates and actual midterm races, instead of reflections on what the GOP base think about Democratic candidates and races.
His politics reporting is (amazingly, at this point) not all Donald Trump, all the time.
Bucking the trend, he is. Good for him.
Baud
@Kay: He’s always done that. Good on him, but I wish we had liberal reporters doing the same thing.
NotMax
@Kay
Maverick!
;)
satby
@OzarkHillbilly: Then with luck it will all be over today and they’ll all be out safely. Seems like they’re moving more quickly today.
Good morning all ?, especially @rikyrah: our morning sunshine!
?BillinGlendaleCA
@OzarkHillbilly: I’ve seen a few really good ones on my Milky Way shooting trips. Unfortunately they’re hard to photograph.
ETA: Since the Sky Tracker moves to camera to compensate for the earth’s movement, I never get meteors when I use it, I only get a shot of them when I shoot the foreground. If I shoot without a Sky Tracker, I shoot multiple shots so I have a better chance of capturing one, that’s what happened in that shot.
Mary G
@Kay: Weigel seems to be the only reporter who actually goes places and talks to people face to face at political events instead of by phone or email or at a bar/cocktail party. He knew that incumbent from the Bronx/Queens was going to lose before anyone else, because he was at one of the primary debates that the guy blew off.
The LA Times is doing a good job of keeping the immigrant children story front and center. Today the first story is “‘What if I lose her forever?’ In Guatemala, a couple fears for their child still in detention in U.S.” They went to Guatemala to interview the parents of a 7-year-old still stuck in Arizona, with lots of details about the case.
rikyrah
ELEVEN out!!!
Just two more???
rikyrah
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
The one from the stepdaughter yesterday was gorgeous?

Yesterday I did hear that the group that came out was healthier than the first group. According to the Guardian anti-anxiety drugs which seems like a good idea.

Looks like all Thai boys will be brought out soon. Varying reports of 9 to 11 boys are out so far. Kudos to the rescue team members.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@rikyrah: She had a good time and got some nice pics. I think she’s going to borrow my camera for her trip. I’ve offered.
OzarkHillbilly
@JPL: Yeah, just enough to take the edge off.

Ugh.

I’ve just realized I come to BJ to read news about things like the SCOTUS pick because here I get it with a dose of social support. Otherwise, it’s too depressing.

After his unsuccessful attempts to oust Joy Reid, GG has now decided to go after Malcolm Nance. And apparently MSNBC gives more direction to its hosts than RT, at least according to the late Ed Schultz.
debbie
@OzarkHillbilly:
So, one boy and the coach, right?
Kay
@Mary G:
It’s kind of nice if you’re not a MAGA, reading something other than reflections on Donald Trump, the psychology of Donald Trump, how Donald Trump’s base feel about various Democrats, the reporter’s coming of age during Donald Trump’s candidacy….
Political reporting for the rest of us.
debbie
@MomSense:
I think GG will come to regret that decision. There’s no messing with Malcolm.
rikyrah
@MomSense:
Because Malcolm called his azz out!

The fix was in:
So all this “who will get voted off the island this week” farrago was completely false. I wonder how the other “frontrunners” feel about that. Twitler just keeps managing to be worse and worse every week.
rikyrah
I refused to watch MSNBC last night. So, I watched Luke Cage. And, a friend called me to rave about Outlander, which he had gotten from his library. Neither one of us could stomach political tv last night.?
rikyrah
@Mary G:
Uh huh
Uh huh ? ?
OzarkHillbilly
@debbie: Yes.
ETA: and the doctor and the 2 SEALs who have been staying with them.
Kay
It takes me a while to think through the damage the far Right SCOTUS will do but we would be remiss if we didn’t mention how they’ll gut environmental regulations. Clean air and water. Cleaner air and water are a real liberal policy success story. We’d be drowning in filth if conservatives had had their way.
I hate the waste of it. How you’re given this amazing thing – The Great Lakes, for example- and they just recklessly fucking ruin and destroy it with no thought for anyone who comes after them.
Haroldo
@Dorothy A. Winsor: This has long been my M.O. This place is a wonderful filter.

@Mary G:
It was for ratings. This game they’re playing is mutually beneficial. The only people who don’t benefit from it are the public.
OTOH, Trump’s approval rating is down again, so all the pundits who predicted people would support jailing children may have been wrong.
Immanentize
@MomSense:
Now what quality does Malcolm Nance Share with Joy Reid? Hmmmm….
Did people decide that emptywheel ratted on Greenwald or Assange to the FBI?

I honestly believe that they are shocked that people, outside of the deplorables, have a serious problem with ripping children from their parents. After all, they’re just non-White children.?

rikyrah
@JPL:
Oh my ???
Wow. They did it ???

@rikyrah: we did! The weather stayed oddly excellent the whole time we were there. Sunny, no rain, in the 70’s but for one day which was partly cloudy in the 60s.

@Immanentize: One quality that the two of them share is that neither knows shit about Russia. Which is OK in Reid’s case, she’s a domestic TV talking head. But Nance projects himself as some sort of expert, and he’s not.
Yes, I know what your point was.
OzarkHillbilly
Happy to be wrong about this rescue. I always figured in the best case scenario they would lose only one or 2, especially after the Thai diver died. An amazing feat.
Immanentize
@Gin & Tonic:
Fair enough. Do you think GG is an expert on Russia?
Baud
@Immanentize: He’s probably intimately familiar with their asset recruitment practices.
Gin & Tonic
@Immanentize: I do not (other than what Baud observed.) I view with great skepticism the alleged expertise of anyone who can’t read primary source material in the original.
JPL
@OzarkHillbilly: Same.
The rescue was amazing when you realize that one passage was only fifteen inches.
Gin & Tonic
@JPL:
I guess that’s one thing that ruled me out as a potential rescuer. That, and the fact that I really don’t like confined spaces. Especially pitch-black confined spaces.

@Quinerly: 41% is still too high. We’re talking about a man who is kidnapping children and destroying families, a man who has started an unnecessary tariff trade war with our allies and a man who can’t speak without lying. Nothing positive came out of his talks with the North Korean dictator and he’s about to have a private meeting with his Russian handler. He just took a concrete step to destroy the Affordable Care Act. His approval rating should be much lower.
OzarkHillbilly
@Platonailedit: There is no need to vandalize the cave.
Quinerly
@Patricia Kayden: agree 100% with you but I think the 10% slide is the largest swing in the shortest amt of time. Another 10% hit will get him close to that magical 27%.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Patricia Kayden:
If gas prices continue to go up, that’ll do it.
Platonailedit
@OzarkHillbilly:
A measly one or two feet additional opening in the narrowest part is not vandalising the cave.
Baud
@Patricia Kayden: Hoover got 40% of the vote after the Great Depression had been going on for 3 years. It’ll be hard for Trump to go below 40% in a good economy, no matter how much he should as a moral matter.
Quinerly
@?BillinGlendaleCA: sad to say that gas prices will end up being more important than Brown babies in cages.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Quinerly: For most of these folk, brown babies in cages is abstract and distant; they have to fill the truck up every couple of days.
Quinerly
@Baud: I just Googled “Trump’s lowest approval rating.” He hit 35% in December, for what it’s worth.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: They even named a vacuum cleaner after him.
Quinerly
@?BillinGlendaleCA: yep.
OzarkHillbilly
@Platonailedit: Making an opening unnecessarily wider is vandalizing the cave. Cavers call such uncomfortable features “nerd filters” because they keep people who have no business being in a cave to begin with, out. I have navigated much more difficult passages (less than 7″ w/o water, 12″ with) and the fact that they were able to bring these children safely thru it says it is unnecessary.
Platonailedit
@OzarkHillbilly:
I doubt Thai govt will take such a blase view after what happened, but terming it as vandalizing the cave is over the top.
ETA: I am watching on bbc rescuers driving the guide rope spikes on the cave surface. So, making that exit point a bit wider is not a bfd.
OzarkHillbilly
@OzarkHillbilly: Edit function not working:
ETA I keep writing “wider” but the chances are this 15″ constriction is in height, which is what I was speaking of when I referred to my own >7″ and 12″. In all likelihood it was much wider.Chances are also pretty good that the 15″ ht extended for several feet in length
OzarkHillbilly
@Platonailedit:
Ask a caver about that, oh wait a minute, you already have. You are right that the Thai govt might well look at it differently, but then I’m pretty sure that like most 3rd world countries the environment takes a backseat to development.
They are nerd proofing it.
Gin & Tonic
