NotMax sent me the following:
Following up about a potential NYC area meet-up.
Commenter satby, who will be in town, suggested July 29th. Sunday
works for me (don’t have to go to work on Monday) but maybe not for
others? If a Sunday, maybe set an afternoon start time? Say, 4-ish or
5-ish.As for locale, wide open to suggestions. As people expressed a
definite preference for a place close to mass transit, will mention
one possibility.Tír na Nóg, at 31st and 8th, practically spitting distance to Penn Station.

I might make it.

I know I haven’t made the earlier meet-ups, but this is accessible enough from my Upper West Side dwelling that I’d make a real effort to get there.

How does one pronounce that?

Nothing is set in stone. If consensus leans to a different date or time or location, please don’t hesitate a second to make it known – especially you lurkers.

In the “Isn’t it a small world” department, Adam informed me he has been there. Presume if the place or food was sucky he would have mentioned it.

So sorry I’ll be out of town! BTW I never thanked satby for the kitten pics. Please give us an update on their adoption status….

The Molly Wee, 1/2 block South on 8th is another good bar in the Garden area. It is popular with TV crews and MSG Stagehands.

I do seem to be going to that city an awful lot these days; we’ll see if I’m there then.

How nice of you guys to include me! I’m getting to be such an old fart an earlier time works fine for me so that the worker bees can get home at a reasonable hour. And an Irish pub too, a chara le mo chroí!

I’m getting ready to watch The Tunnel on PBS. First episode of this third season last week was okay but not confidence-inspiring. Dunno exactly why. Felt like there was a bit too much pointless backing and forthing between Britain and France.
I’m behind on Endeavour. Forgot to record the first episode until late in the week, then didn’t watch it before the second episode last week. So I’ve got those to watch before looking at the one from tonight.
What I did watch, earlier today, was two episodes of the new British Maigret starring Rowan Atkinson. Good writing, great production values. Recommended.
In other news, my cell phone is still taking the rice cure after briefly getting immersed in water a few days ago. I don’t get many phone calls and found a Verizon app to check my texts on the computer, so I haven’t missed it too much. I’ve done some research on new phones and might start shopping tomorrow if the current one is still dead. Haven’t bothered to check it this weekend.

@Steeplejack:
Tonight’s Endeavour (#3) was excellent.

You’ve just described most of the last 1000 years.

@zhena gogolia:
That’s good to hear. I know you thought the first one was a little . . . implausible?
Although a few days after that I had a WTF moment when I remembered the episode where Endeavour almost got eaten by a tiger.
You should definitely check out the Rowan Atkinson Maigret, if it’s available. I can’t tell whether it’s national PBS or something picked up by WETA, the flagship station here.
satby
@Steeplejack: have you tried Shetland? It’s on Netflix and I just finished the series. Convoluted mysteries and atmospheric setting, I really liked it.
SectionH
@Steeplejack: “British Maigret starring Rowan Atkinson.” Where did you watch that? I’m trying to put Maigret and Rowan together. Not so sure about that, but I’ve gotta give that a try.
Still haven’t started season 4 of Endeavour. Are y’all watching 5 now?
NotMax
Uh oh. Just now discovered that The Prisoner is on Amazon Prime.
Do I really want to watch it for the *mumble mumble* time? Queued it up anyway. Perfect for having on when in “I’ll just lie down and rest my eyes a bit” mode.

“How about _Good Housekeeping_ ?”
SectionH
@satby: I loved Shetland as a show for a while – and really really want to go there now. I haven’t finished the series, but might soldier through after (no spoilers) that.

sounds like I’ve got something to look forward to…. I’ve been traveling a lot the last couple of years so I’m catching up. I just watched the season 3 opener, which is kind of Young Morse meets the British Gatsby. I enjoy the show, especially Inspector Thursday (“Then I’ll just have to take off my hat…” Run, you motherfuckers), but I have a hard time seeing the mature Morse grow out of the young one they’ve written. I’m curious to see if/how they build toward that.
Steeplejack
@satby:
I’ve seen Shetland and liked it a lot. Also Hinterland (similar premise in Wales).
@SectionH:
The Rowan Atkinson Maigret has been on one of the two flagship PBS stations here, either WETA (Washington) or MPT (Maryland Public Television). I think the former, because they run a thriving cottage industry in all things British. They even have a lesser channel, WETA-UK, that is British stuff 24/7, e.g., right now early Doctor Who (not Tom Baker, but the guy right before or right after him, but not Peter Davison). A fair portion of dreck, especially during the day, but they run a lot of good Brit series of recent vintage. But I digress.
Atkinson is quite good as Maigret, and I say that as someone who considers Bruno Cremer the gold standard. (That French Maigret series is now running at 1:00 p.m. EDT every day on Eurotrash microchannel MHz, also available through Amazon Prime.)
Maigret trailer here.

Vaguely on topic, “my kids” (son & DIL) are in NYC as I write. They’re on their way tomorrow to Malawi for a couple of weeks, staying with DIL’s bff from HS. She’s Peace Corps staff there now – not living in a tent, but inna house, but she’s been there for a couple of years. They’ve already got amazing plans. I’m almost jealous.
Then they’ll be back to NY for a wedding, then home. The kids aren’t Juicers, but they’re quite active Democrats. Oh yeah, we raised the kid right, and he married right.

@Steeplejack: I watched a few episodes of Hinterland. They were vaguely interesting. And sadly to me, not esp. Welsh. Possibly I don’t get that slant.
I did actually just finish watching Blackadder from start to finish. I’d seen many before but damn. Fuckit, it beats – not that it doesn’t mimic – a great deal of current insanity. So yeah, I expect Rowan can handle any role he wants to. I read a fair amount of Maigret a long time ago, though, and never pictured an actor. (I’m kinda weird that way.) But I have Prime, so I’m gonna check out Eurotrash channel.
Oh, there’s a bunch of old Who stuff on Youtube. It’s all ghastly. I thought it was then. I still think so. I’m pretty fond of new Who. Gonna watch the Maigret trailer now.
ETA: Watched it. Ok then.
Steeplejack
@SectionH:
The “Eurotrash channel,” MHz, is available as a channel through Prime, but I think it requires a subscription, $7 or $8 a month. But I think there is a free 30-day trial, so you could look at the French Maigret and the other stuff that’s there. Lots of great European series. Let me know if you want recommendations.
And there’s a chance MHz could be on your cable system (if you have one). Search for “Maigret” as a show title in the channel guide and see what comes up.
SectionH
@Steeplejack: Cool! Nah, I just stream stuff, but I’m about to drop Acorn, so picking up Euro would be no biggie – and if there’s a free trial, that would be even better.
Steeplejack
@SectionH:
Re Hinterland: They filmed it simultaneously in English and Welsh—the first season, at least.
I don’t know what would make it “look” Welsh, other than the place-names and street signs. I thought it was Shetland-ish in its “cops in the middle of scenic nowhere” vibe.
Steeplejack
@SectionH:
MHz Choice: 30-day trial, $7.99 a month. You don’t have to go through Prime, but you can if that’s more convenient.
NotMax
@Steeplejack
Believe I saw a promo someplace for the Atkinson Maigret streaming on the Britbox service.
Tight budget precludes adding more subscription streaming channels, however Walter Presents looks mighty inviting. I could get it via the Roku box if could bring myself to commit to another monthly fee.
Steeplejack
@NotMax:
That looks interesting. Bookmarked.

Well, I got so embroiled in catching up on Balloon Juice that I missed The Tunnel. Guess I’ll catch the rerun tomorrow afternoon.
SectionH
@Steeplejack: I’ll check it out, TY.

I’ll be there on the 29th.

Barring last minute work emergencies, I’ll be at the meet up.
Clearly I need to catch up on some TV first so I can contribute to the conversation.

Unless my recovery from oral surgery on July 20 goes far worse than expected (or, as is possible, my daughter and wife insist on us seeing some colleges for the offspring, likely Bard and Vassar, on that weekend), I expect to get there.

Another source for MHZ shows: your local public library?? I’ve been through so much of their stuff that way (A French Village, Spiral, Irene Huss, Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter, Antigone 34, Borgen, the original Wallander)…fortunately the NYC public library has a good number of them on dvd. Just a thought. going to make the meet-up too, if I can!

For what it’s worth, the bars near Penn Station can get unbelievably slammed during happy hour, so I wouldn’t recommend any of them without reserving a table.

I think I can probably make this – it being a sunday means that I only have to worry about getting myself to work on monday, not getting out of work on time :)
ads60nyc
I might be able to make that.
